SLAVES

1. The Newbie - This is your very first auction and you don't quite know what to expect. Hopefully you remember your training and don't disgrace yourself in front of your new master. Hopefully someone thinks you're worth buying at all.

2. The Oldtimer - You've been bought and sold and bought again so many times. You've seen it all before and don't think this time is going to be much different. In fact, the only real anxiety you've got is whether or not someone's going to pay for a more than slightly used slave.

3. The Pet - You're a pleasure slave. A bed warmer. A decorative piece of artwork. You're meant to look pretty and be pleasing and not much else.

4. The Guard - Your master hired you because of your ability to swing a sword or shoot a gun, not your looks.

5. The Escape Artist - Somehow you always manage to squirm out of your master's chains. Too bad you seem to get caught after a while. Maybe your next daring escape will be permanent. Then again, maybe your next master has special ways of keeping you locked up.

6. The Undercover - You aren't a slave at all, you're just pretending to be one. Why? Well that's up to you. Either way, your cover is blown if you don't act the part.

7. The Specialist - You have a skill that no one else has. Something rare and valuable. Something your master needs more than anything else.

MASTERS

1. The Customer - You've owned slaves before and this trip to the market is nothing new to you. Still, you're hoping to find something worth your while.

2. The Gift - Someone bought a pet for you, isn't that nice of them? Or maybe it isn't so nice. Did you even want a slave in the first place? Well you're stuck with one now.

3. The Giver - You're selecting a slave for someone else, and they need to be perfect. Perhaps you'd better test them out first to make sure you're getting your money's worth.

4. The Trainer - You specialize in taming unruly slaves and making them over into perfect, obedient, well-trained pets.

5. The Rebel - You hate the idea of slavery, but the system isn't going to go away any time soon, so the next best thing is to buy up any slave you can get your hands on and free them, right?

6. The Companion - You want someone to be with you always, someone you can talk to and depend on, someone who will never leave your side. It's a good thing that money can buy that these days.

7. The Undercover - You're not actually a Master. You're at the auction for an entirely different reason. Maybe it's special policework, maybe you're trying to hunt down a certain someone. Either way, your cover is blown unless you act the part.

[ The tall, black haired and black-robed woman moves through the crowd like it's nothing but an eddy of water. No House marks adorn her clothing, but two servants follow her at a respectful distance, already bearing some of the market's earlier purchases. She's come to the slave auction with a particular need in mind, but rather than waiting with the rest of the crowd out front, she's slipped a coin to the gatekeeper and is let in to the holding areas where she can get a look at who is going up on the auction block later in the day.

Her servants wait outside the gate, obviously knowing better than to voice objection to her entering such a place unsupervised. She strides unhesitating through the dimly lit, dirty corridor, peering into the wooden holding areas one at a time. ]

Sonja was 'browsing,' as it were, before the official auction takes place.

Her father had been pushing her to get a bodyguard slave, but she balked at it. If anything she could use a personal assistant; it was becoming more difficult to juggle her studies with the management of three continents, which she at least wanted to have some oversight of, even if the Emperor insisted that the huge and significant bureaucracy of a global superpower is largely taken care of without her micromanaging things.

He was wrong, obviously.

There was always the chance she'd just find something interesting all the same. Someone interesting, she reminded herself. These were people, not tanks or soldiers.

...Soldiers are people too. Right. Anyway.

She finds herself in front of Heather, and manages to put on a polite and diplomatic expression.

This was an all-too-familiar sight to Gene. He was back in the markets again, now that the lashes on his back from his most recent escape attempt had sufficiently healed so he wouldn't get marked down for being 'troublesome'.

Not only was he troublesome, his auctioneer had a special reason to sell. He'd been of little value to his stepfather for too long, and far too much trouble. The best thing to do was to pawn the slave off onto someone else.

For once, Gene hoped he'd be bought. Not least because he could have a chance to slip away later, but because he'd stolen something, and wanted to get away before his stepfather noticed.

Escaped or sold, Gene would not leave without the last piece he had of his mother - her ring. Never.

There are those with a particular proud tilt of the head in the market - and you can always tell they're new. Masters break them of that quickly. The ones who have been bought and sold multiple times keep their eyes downcast. They know better.

But this one's been in servitude since he was young, and his head is still held high. He's changed hands often, because a slave that can't be broken is a useless one, and now he's back on the block.

Her father had warned her time and again to stay away from humans, that they were too dangerous. If only she had heeded those warnings, she wouldn't have been captured by pirates, and sold off into slavery. She was considered an exotic pet to be purchased by the highest bidder, and when they heard her tearful singing in captivity her price nearly doubled.

To say she was worried was a gross understatement, she was out of her mind with terror at what her fate might be. Was she to be kept in this fish tank forever? Was she going to be eaten by some deranged lunatic? Would she ever see her home, friends, or family again? What if she was merely going to be tortured to death for her new master's amusement?

When the auction finally ended, her locked fish tank was passed off to a strange looking woman with a fuzzy tail, and peculiar ears on her head. She leaned against the glass of her semi-portable prison and asked the obvious question. "What are you going to do with me?"

[The annual slave auction of Valerian House is a highly anticipated event in some select circles. It cannot compare to the Longest Night hosted by Cereus, but it has its own presence and dignity, it's own dark draw that has nothing to do with prolonged evenings and Winter at it's height. At the auction, not only can the adepts of Valerian House be auctioned off for an evening, but there are also those who can be bid for who will stay with those who win them for longer periods of time. A fortnight. A month. Some even the length of a year and a day. They may be Valerian adepts, or those who have made their marque and operate in the Night Court with a level of freedom not yet earned by others. Some still are not Court-affiliated at all, serving Naamah with the aid of a patron.

Wanda has not yet made her marque, but every adept knows that the patron gifts of those who bid at the auction can be significant. It's not for that reason that she finds herself on the block, however. She's well aware of the lucrative opportunities of volunteering to be auctioned, but what drives her are her own desires. To throw herself to chance and see where it takes her and into whose arms. Under which lash. Each night she never knows who may visit Valerian House, and who may ask for her companionship. The auction takes that unknown element that Wanda finds so intriguing and takes it to another level entirely.

She's dressed in one of her better gowns tonight, made by a friend in Eglantine. Layers of cream colored chiffon drape over her form, falling loose to her ankles and into a small train behind her. The bodice is swept up in crimson flowers and leaves, bound in brambles so dark they almost look back. It highlights the softness of her skin, the creamy color of it and alludes to the sharper desires she possesses, that a patron could enjoy if they would but take a chance on her...

The bidding passes quicker than she ever anticipated when it's her turn. Prospective patron after patron offering higher and higher sums of money until at last it's between just two. Her eyes shift between the men, studying them as best she can in the dim lighting from the dais, but before too long the gavel is struck. At last, only one bid remains and the auctioneer declares her sold. Heart beating in her chest, she descends the short flight of stairs to the main floor where she's led to the table where her contract would be swiftly drafted and signed by both herself and the winner of the auction. Resisting the urge to wet her lips with the tip of her tongue, she holds herself still and patient as the man makes his way to her side.]

Ashley knew full well that he'd gotten himself into this, but he still held out hope he could get himself out of it. Or, better, that his sorcerer brother would figure out how to track him down and barter him back. But that wasn't likely. Ashley had been clearly warned not to snoop around with his brother's magic.

Still dressed in his fine human clothing, a loose white shirt and fitted slacks, Ashley watched the crowd. There was petulance in his lovely face, and laziness, but there was also a sharp intelligence as he searched the crowd for allies or escape. He'd been found wandering in the wild forest and had been captured, brought to a fantastical faerie market to be sold to the highest bidder.

Ashley had few doubts about why he'd be bought. His beauty had always garnered him attention, and the men and women he'd encountered had been all too eager to paw at him. Ashley didn't expect the faerie realm to be any different.

Today is Tony's eighteenth birthday. Instead of celebrating with cake and presents and maybe going out and doing something goofy like buying a lottery ticket, he's on an auction block, standing sullenly in a line of slaves.

He'd known this was coming, but that doesn't make it any less of a bitter pill to swallow. His social worker had been very disappointed in him - resignedly cataloguing all the ways he'd been a drain on society in his past twelve years as a ward of the state. Bouncing from foster home to foster home, running away, skipping out on the "youth enrichment" (read: child labor) programs that were supposed to help them pay back their debt to the government, blowing up his dorm room that one time on accident, yadda yadda. He's been racking up expenses for Big Brother like an out-of-warranty Cadillac, everyone has been eager to remind him (though usually in less expressive terms). And when a delinquent state ward with massive debt and no apparent inclination to contribute to society turns eighteen... this is where they end up. The government has to recoup its losses somehow, after all.

Whatever. He's planning to run away at the first opportunity anyway. Start fresh. He'll hack some decrepit government computer, and forge himself a new identify. Some identity other than Tony Stark. It's not like Stark means anything anymore.

Stark International had taken a hit when Howard had turned the company away from weapons manufacturing, but still, Tony's sure he'd had some plan in place; some contingency to make sure his son was cared for, should the worst happen. But the worst had happened, and no contingencies had been forthcoming. Tony was only a kid when his parents died: too young to understand what was going on. As he'd grown older, he'd begun to suspect his dad's business partner, Stane, had somehow orchestrated things to keep Tony from competing with him for control of the company when he came of age; as he'd grown to adulthood, he'd begun to realize that it didn't matter.

Stark International became Stane International, and weapons production restarted, and the name "Stark" faded to a footnote in business textbooks and old technology journals. No one cares about Tony Stark anymore. If he's ever going to be anyone, he'll have to earn it the hard way.

Starting with figuring his way out of this load of bullshit.

He glares out at the crowd, imagining kicking each and every one of these sleazy assholes right in the teeth. He's not sure that's going to help, but it is satisfying.

It was one thing to receive gifts for being promoted to CEO of Shimada Cybernetics, and quite another for the reason for that promotion being the death of his father.

Still, refusing was impossible. There would be no quietly getting rid of this particular present, or simply tossing it after a convenient amount of time had passed.

No, Hanzo was stuck with the extremely expensive present currently being presented to him. His first time in his new office - this was not his father's office, anymore - and trying to adjust, and this. A Pet.

As if he needed anything new to worry about currently. As if he needed to hire a caretaker for a Pet, another thing in his apartment he rarely visited. Still, Hanzo focused his face, accepted the present with grace.

The donor was one of his father's largest clients, a 'welcoming gift, to a promising young new owner'.

"Thank you," Hanzo said, bowing one last time as the man left - there was a rather unpleasant smile on the man's face, like he expected Hanzo to not delay his first use of his new pet.

As soon as he was gone, and the door closed, Hanzo did turn his attention to his gift. His Pet. But it was from behind his desk, sitting in his chair. He stared at the Pet - dressed in clothing that definitely did not fit the chilliness of the season, a lurid bow tied around his neck - and sighed. "Stand up," he told the pet.

Sometimes, slaves aren't born as such. Too much inbreeding isn't good for the quality of the product, after all. Sometimes, slaves are captured from the barbarian nomads that scrape a living out of the harsh, monster-infested badlands that one inevitably ends up in if they stray too far from the safety of the walled cities. Once, centuries ago before the secondary walls had even been built to create a ring of protected farmland around the cities and travel along unprotected roads between the fortress-cities wasn't such a dangerous affair, acquiring one of these exotic outsiders was a rare event. In those times they were universally prized as prime breeding stock regardless of individual traits or temperament.

However, these days those 'acquisitions' are becoming much more common. The barbarians are growing ever-more daring, ranging far closer to the walls and attacking many of those caravans brave enough or foolish enough to travel between the cities without the benefit of an entire mercenary company to guard them. The primary roads are slowly being fortified with their own long walls so that eventually the people will be able to travel between cities without fear again, but as yet many routes remain unprotected from wild beasts and barbarian raids. Yet when one of those raids fails any assailants that remain alive and are unable to escape are bound, drugged, and added to whatever goods the caravan was carrying to sell or trade. So while still rare and exotic, the Trademasters are able to be selective about what ones they choose to keep as breeders. The rest are sold at a high price as luxury pets and status symbols. But only after the former brutes have been 'reeducated' into proper civilized servants, of course.

It is difficult for those that live in the cities to understand why the nomads aren't begging to be brought into the safety of the walls, why they choose to live such hard, short lives under constant threat from the twisted beasts that roam the wilderness. It's surely a blessing and a relief to be brought into the safety of the cities. To be given a steady and certain supply of food to nourish their lean and and often half-starved bodies. To be taught how to act like a proper member of society, and as such receive the easy, pampered life of a companion and pleasure-giver to the likes of nobles and the most affluent of merchants. Yet many are resistant to the idea at first. Some wild-spirited few are so brutish in nature that they refuse to learn anything in their reeducation courses. These individuals are still sold at high price - an Outsider is still an Outsider after all - but these stubborn fools rarely stay in a single master's possession for long. Like someone buying a wolf as an exotic show piece only to quickly learn it is simply too difficult to handle and must be gotten rid of, the owners of these Outsiders are often unable to deal with the rebellious and usually violent nature of their new servants. These slaves are sold and gifted to others time and time again, each owner eager to make them somebody else's problem while also making a quick and significant profit in either hard coin or societal debt.

It's one of those defiant fools that stands before Alcuin now.

The young man had been given as a gift earlier that evening. Something etiquette demanded Alcuin accept, and repay the previous owner for their 'generosity' sometime in the future. All of the signs of one who's been around for a while and gone through this particular song and dance countless times are there. Skin that was surely once darkly tanned has turned pale from many long months mostly spent indoors. Yet there's a healthy color to him, one that along with the way his form has filled out beyond mere skin and bones proves his body's had ample time to recover from the lack of proper nutrition he must have endured before. His clothes are far fancier - and more cumbersome - than anything an Outsider would wear of their own volition, yet careful observation shows he knows exactly how to move and carry himself in the layers of fabric, with not a thread out of place. Most notably of all, the young man maintains his composure, standing calm and silent instead of screaming or lashing out.

But it's obvious he's still far from becoming 'civilized.' His hair appears shaggy and unkempt, the ruffled look and uneven ends pointing to attempts to style it only for the young man to immediately undo whatever work was done, including continuing to cut his own hair whenever he could get a hold of something sharp enough to do so. His figure is trim and lean, all of the weight he must have put on being pure muscle. He stands straight and confident, an aura of defiance radiating off of him.

Most of all, however, his unbroken spirit can be seen clearly in his piercing green eyes. Eyes that glare with all the ferocity of bared fangs. Fangs Alcuin is being threatened with in silent challenge at this very moment, now that the young man's former masters have left and Alcuin is left with a new slave that still needs a role assigned to him.

Hell's Kitchen has, perhaps unsurprisingly, gone to hell. Jessica Jones was no fool; she already knew about the various black markets lurking within Manhattan, but that information doesn't make it any easier to process. One of her recent cases caused her to investigate a rumor buzzing around the city, one that can now be confirmed as true. Slaves — goddamn slaves — are being sold.

Stepping into the marketplace, she glances around the numerous stalls, as employees and slaves alike prepare for the upcoming auction. Her chest tightens with disgust, even as she tries her best to conceal the emotion from her expression. She's working undercover, which means she can't afford to act out, no matter how much she'd like to.
