I doubt the mother is anywhere near here. [It's not as if a full-grown dragon could hide that easily, even in the countryside and swampland that makes up this area. Castiel wouldn't have even gotten this far if she'd been anywhere close, which probably means that the egg slipped through on its own, somehow.

Which also means that the dragon is an orphan. A fire-breathing orphan, but there's still a sense of responsibility that Castiel feels toward it. Which is as strange for him to realize as it would be for anyone else.

Sam may be on his side, but that might not be enough to convince Dean. And to some extent, Castiel can't blame him.]

I understand. It's too great of a risk. [He shouldn't have even attempted this in the first place, but he'd needed to at least let Sam and Dean know what was going on.] That's why I'll find another way.

[The dragon starts to wriggle in his arms and Castiel sighs and adjusts it until it gets comfortable again, taking a glance down the road. He'll figure something out.]

[ Sam gives Dean a dirty look for that, thoroughly unimpressed with his sass, clearly and eases closer. It's a dragon, okay, this is fucking exciting, you don't need to be such a twat about it.

Dean, on the other hand, was talking about airing out the car - he's not about to let Cas try and take a fucking taxi with a dragon in the back seat, Jesustapdancingchrist.

Huffing out a breath, he eases closer and gives it a sour look, pointing a finger at Sam without even looking at him. ] No excitement from you.

Cas, she-- he-- that is riding in your lap and I swear to god, if she burns the inside of Baby, I'm gonna make her into a pair of boots.

[Castiel doesn't know how Dean went from outright refusing to... this, but he isn't about to question it. It probably has something to do with Dean not wanting to let Castiel out of his sight for longer than necessary, but this time he's more than happy to take advantage of that fact.

It's not as if he wants the dragon (and even he doesn't know its sex, which is one of the many things he would like to determine by studying it) to torch Dean's car, either. He's hoping to keep it calm and under control, but that's easier said than done.

At least Sam's on board with this. Castiel wouldn't mind having some help when it comes to studying the creature.]

Understood. [He nods and then moves for the back seat door, nodding to Sam as he moves past him. Castiel isn't going to give Dean a chance to change his mind.]

[ Well, there's not a lot else they can do. He could let Cas take a taxi or a bus (HORRIBLE IDEA, Dean cringes at the very thought) or he could commandeer another car but that means Sam driving Baby - or Sam driving someone else's car and with their luck at this point someone'd report it and then they'd get pulled over.

With a fucking dragon.

So no, not an option. Instead, he focuses on this. ]

What do you know about dragons?

[ He tosses it over his shoulder as he goes and grabs a few more blankets and makes a sort of crude nest-like thing on the back seat, frowning. ]

Does he--she- does that eat stuff?

I would assume so.

[With his hands full, Castiel isn't able to help Dean prepare the back seat, but he does draw closer to watch. Sam takes that as an invitation to come closer and see the dragon for himself. Castiel carefully pulls the mouth of the sack open again so that Sam can peer inside, and while the dragon lets out a squeaky growl and swats at Sam, no actual damage is done.

The lore on dragons is so extensive that it would be difficult to pick out the actual truth in it, and it's not as if Castiel knows that much, seeing how dragons have mainly been banished to Purgatory.]

My guess is that it's a meat-eater. [It shouldn't be too difficult to provide for it. Castiel and Dean are practically meat-eaters themselves, so the bunker's kitchen is usually well stocked.

Granted, this dragon is bound to eat a lot, so they'll need to keep that in mind as well. Castiel doesn't want to imagine what would happen if they ended up with a hungry, fire-breathing monster running wild in the Man of Letters hideout.]

...Can you tell if it's a dude or not?

[ Dean sort of pats down the blankets and everything else and gives it a dubious look. He really, really doesn't want to do this but it's not like they have a lot of options. It's not...violent, but it's still a monster and that doesn't sit right with him but so long as it's just squeaking and hissing and not taking fingers off, well. Dean's not in the habit of killing children, monsters or not. ]

Probably. It got teeth?

[ Sam gets close enough to find out and the dragon hisses and snaps at him, too, but it looks more sulky than intimidating and Dean stifles a snort because no. Not funny. Dragon. Bad idea.

Dean exhales, exasperated, and tugs at Cas. ]

Get it in the back seat. Jesus.

[From Castiel's perspective, it's obvious that the dragon is intimidated and is lashing out for that reason, rather than being pointlessly vicious. Which means that all they need to do is not abuse it in any way, and it should calm down. Once it's eaten, at least, but hopefully it can hold out for the two hour drive.]

I should be able to determine its sex when I have the chance to examine it. [For now, he's not going to try it because it would require shifting it around and he isn't going to do anything that might provoke the dragon into breathing fire.

He settles into the back seat with it and finally allows it out of the sack. The dragon scuttles forward and then finds a comfortable spot among all of the blankets to settle down, though its nostrils are still flaring.

Castiel bends down slightly to stare into its eyes and issues an order.]

Behave.

Oh boy.

[ Fuck his life, seriously. Dean thumps himself down into the front seat and Sam takes the spot next to him but looks back like a little kid who just got a new puppy. Ugh.

At least the damn thing settles - it squirms and curls into the blankets, watching them all like it's not sure what it wants to do. The drive is easy enough - a few hours and then they're back at the bunker, but Dean eyes a turn off to a store and pulls into the lot at the furthest back place, glancing back. ]

Best guesses on what a pair of boots e- ow! [ Dean shoves at Sam when he's punched in the arm, but he's grinning, snickering. ] I'll grab some steak or something.

[The dragon even manages to fall asleep for a time, which isn't all that surprising, seeing how most infants need plenty of rest as they grow and develop.

In fact, the dragon had been sleeping soundly (and while a small amount of smoke had come out with its snoring, it hadn't been enough to worry about) up until the moment when Dean yelled from Sam punching him.

The sound is loud enough to startle the dragon into wakefulness, and it's nervous enough that Castiel watches its head bob as it prepares to belch out fire as a defense mechanism.

Castiel can't let that happen. It's instinct which drives him to lean forward and actually clamp his hand over the dragon's snout. It still breathes out fire, and the heat and pain that floods through his palm is enough that Castiel can't hold back a groan of pain.

He falls back against the seat, cradling his burned hand to his chest. The dragon, meanwhile, is very confused, but at least the car hasn't been damaged.]

[ He's all set to bicker with his brother over this, half-amused because he's getting his panties all up in a wad and then he catches the scent of smoke and burning hits him and he jerks around, prepared to bitch. It's not what he thinks, though - Cas has his hand over the mouth and Dean curses, grabbing at his wrist to pull it away.

He's entirely unconcerned about the car right now, too busy twisting in the seat to try and look at his hand, hissing quietly. ]

You dumbass, don't -- God, Sammy, can you -

[ Already on his brother's wavelength, Sam's halfway out the door with a nod, and heading into the store for meat and burn treatment while Dean clasps his wrist gently, glaring at the dragon. ]

Are you stupid?

[The burn is hardly a minor one. The skin at the center of his palm is mainly burned away, surrounding with some scorch marks. The flesh that's been exposed is an angry red, and his skin is already starting to peel and blister.

Chances are this hand won't be usable for a few months now, as long as it takes to heal. Castiel realizes it was a stupid thing to do, but he'd acted on instinct, doing what he needed to in order to keep up his end of the bargain.

He can't stop himself from hissing in pain, because this is ten times worse than being cut or stabbed or even shot. The heat is practically unbearable, and he pitches his head down near his chest, not in any position to answer Dean.

The dragon, meanwhile, is beginning to understand what's happened and the damage it's done and is distressed as a result, shifting its attention from Dean to Castiel and back again as it first lets out a few huffs of breath that then degenerates into a wailing sound.

This... hasn't gone well, has it?]

Such a fucking moron, I can't -

[ It's not really clear if he's talking about the dragon or the ex-angel at this point as Dean cups Cas' hands with more gentleness than his tone would indicate he's capable of right now.

He lets out a soft noise at the sight of the skin - burnt and blistering and god, that's going to hurt like a bitch. ]

Hey, look at me, dude, okay, just hang tight a second and don't touch the sonuvabitch.

[ Dean goes digging, finds a clean handkerchief that he keeps tucked in the glovebox along with some gauze and a water bottle. From there, it's a matter of climbing out and to the other side to open the door for him, taking his hand gently.

The water gets uncapped, and he drips a little bit onto the injury, careful not to get it into the car but onto the pavement inside. The dragon only gets a furious look and one finger pointed at it. ]

You, hush.

[ Evidently the tone does enough because the wailing tapers down to more manageable levels, huffing and generally sounding distressed rather than upset. ]

[If anything, the pain is only increasing as the injury settles into his skin and becomes more and more present with each passing second. Dean doesn't need to tell him to not touch it. If Castiel had it has way, there wouldn't be anything near it, and the fact that he's allowing Dean to hold his wrist at all is a sign of the trust that's been built up between them.

When Castiel sees the bottle of water, he tenses. Cleaning out the wound is the logical thing to do, but a mind isn't logical while under the influence of such an intense pain, and all of his instincts are screaming at him to resist.

When the moment comes and the water's poured onto the burn, Castiel almost jerks his arm away, but he forces himself to stay put, hissing and groaning through the process.

Still, the cold water alleviates the heat, if only for a second, and then it's back with a vengeance.

Castiel isn't even thinking about the dragon for the moment, but even so, it burrows itself under the blankets and peers out at them, as if it can hide from the situation by being covered by those sheets.]

I wasn't thinking. [He forces that admittance out.] But your car is intact.

[ he's being a little handsy but the last thing he wants is Cas hurting himself further. Dean crouches in front of Cas, giving the burn a look and a faint hiss. He hopes it doesn't scar - Cas losing mobility in a hand due to scar tissue would be a helluva problem. As it is, he's going to be down for the count until this part gets fixed. ]

Hey, hey, just - ease up, Cas.

[ Dean stops the dripping and glances up at him, concern written all over his face though it shifts to something awful for a split second at what Cas says.

Goddamnit. ]

Damnit, Cas, that isn't what I- if it ever comes down to you getting fucking maimed or the car getting some scorch marks, pick you, you hear me?

[It does take Dean saying that for it to actually fit in. Castiel knows how important the Impala is, he's come to realize that over the years. It isn't just a car, it's a home, it's the only thing that Dean's ever been able to rely on in his life. Sam went to college, his father disappeared on him, but the car has always been there.

So to be told that Castiel should put himself above it is a revelation of sorts.]

I didn't want to break my promise. [But now he's suffering for it, the burn impossible to ignore, the heat running through his palm in waves that makes him wish he could freeze it into numbness.

He lets out a heavy breath and shakes his head, his gaze hanging somewhere near his knees.] Burns... take a while to heal, don't they.

[ Stupid - stupid stupid stupid, goddamnit. Dean is muttering shit under his breath, pissed that Cas'd do this - that this would happen, that he didn't think to specify that Cas should know he's more important than that. Jesus. ]

Fuck the promise, okay, we need you not -- [ Dean cuts himself off with a frustrated noise and glances up when he sees Sam coming back. For all his frustration he's still gentle, tending to the injury cautiously.

He wraps the whole thing when it's done, and Sam passes Castiel three little red pills. ]

Yeah, man. They take a while to heal. We'll figure it out, though.

[Need him not-- what? Not injured? Dean's right, of course. What use will he be now that his hand is essentially unusable? Granted, he still has the other hand, he could still wield a blade just fine, but there's no denying that it's going to make certain things more difficult.

Even simple things, like tying his shoes. Mortality is so unnecessarily difficult sometimes.

As Dean wraps up his hand, Castiel has to fight not to jerk around or hiss in pain, doing what he can to remain as still as possible. It's difficult and he's got sweat beading at his forehead by the end, but the petroleum jelly that they wrapped his palm in does seem to be helping with that unbearable heat.]

... Right. We'll figure it out. [He doesn't sound convinced, but now that his wound's been dealt with, he swallows down the pills and then finally turns back to the dragon, who's still hiding under the covers and watching them all nervously.

Castiel reaches out to set his good hand on its head over the blanket.] I'd appreciate if you didn't do that again.

[ There's some stuff that Dean would spare Castiel if he could. The whole human experience is a clusterfuck at best, a mess at worst, and Dean's not too eager to get Cas dunked in the deep end of the pool right off.

Unfortunately it isn't as if they have a choice.

Sam makes a soft noise of sympathy at the mess of Castiel's hand but Dean's face is utterly blank until it's wrapped. It's only then that he frowns and withdraws. ]

You don't gotta babytalk it. It just charbroiled your hand, man.

[ Dean turns his attention to it and unsurprisingly doesn't feel better when it cowers just a touch, curling into Castiel's good hand. ]

It didn't know what it was doing. It's only starting to realize the damage it can do.

[It's not that Castiel doesn't have an understanding of just how dangerous a dragon can be, but this one is still very young -- newly hatched, even.

Can dragons be domesticated? He has no idea. But if they put it in an environment that's nothing like Purgatory, where it doesn't have to fight for its survival, it's possible it could grow up tame.

The size it might grow to is the more pressing issue, but when Castiel realizes that he's actually considering ways in which they can keep the monster that just scorched his hand, he pulls away from it and glances back to Dean.]

... Let's focus on getting back to the bunker for now. [They can deal with the rest of this mess after that.]

[ Oh my god fskgfhsf. Dean is two seconds from throwing up his hands in frustration at the moron and his need to baby a giant, meat eating lizard.

Still, he's right - get to the bunker, avoid anyone else getting cooked and let's move. Dean huffs out a breath between clenched teeth and hops into his seat again.

The drive back is fairly quiet - Dean side-eyes the dragon in the back seat every so often but it's content to stay curled up, and every so often shifts its head out from the blankets and pokes its nose into Castiel's good hand, like a cat seeking petting.

When they get back, Dean waves Sam off to open the door and he brushes past Cas, scooping up the dragon in the bag because he's not gonna make him carry something with his bum hand. ]

Bite me and I skin you, got it?

[ It apparently does 'get it' because it curls up with a disgruntled noise and shoves its head under Dean's armpit as he walks.

As soon as he's indoors, Dean settles the bag down, staring at it and then Cas a moment. ]

...guess we oughta feed the thing.

[The whole drive back, Castiel closes his eyes and tries to manage the pain. It's much better than it was initially because of the ointment it's been wrapped in, but that doesn't mean it's not throbbing and burning.

Even then, the dragon searches for his hand and his attention, and Castiel runs his uninjured palm over the ridges of its scales.

Once they arrive, Castiel doesn't protest when Dean grabs for the dragon, as he realizes it would be a terrible idea for him to try and carry it while already hurt. He follows Dean and Sam inside, at least managing to carry one of the duffle bags with him on the way in.

As soon as the dragon's set down, it works its way out of the sack and peers at the wide, new area, sniffing its way around like it's a dog rather than some ancient creature. Castiel watches it for a few moments before nodding and turning his attention to Sam.]

Did you buy some meat?

In the trunk.

[ Sam doesn't move, though and Dean understands why the instant he looks over. Jesus. Sam could at least pretend not to be a fucking giddy little girl about this.

Dean turns for the door and goes to grab the groceries that aren't burn and medical supplies and when he comes back in he's got a bag, frowning into it. Cooked or raw, he's not really sure, but by the way its head perks up and it slithers on over to him and pushes up against his leg with a noise suspiciously like a chirp, he can guess. ]

Great. Cas, grab the thing and move it away so I can put this on a plate, okay?

[It's definitely hungry, judging from that reaction.

Castiel's somewhat apprehensive when Dean makes that request, because pulling any animal away from food can end badly. Still, he complies, stepping forward to gather the dragon up in his arms.

As expected, it snarls and does what it can to wriggle out of his grip, but the important thing is that it doesn't scratch, doesn't bite, and doesn't breathe fire.

Fighting to keep his hold on it, Castiel lets out a strained sound as he looks over at Dean.] Make it fast. [He doubts the dragon patience for this for much longer.]

[ He makes it as fast as possible, grabbing the plate, tossing the meat down and cutting it into long strips. When it's sliced, he puts it down on the ground and motions for Cas to let the dragon down.

It seems to be thinking Cas takes to look - a few thrashes and it's slipping out of his hands and thunking against the ground with its wings too small to carry it. It barely seems phased, sliding right up to the plate, digging its face in with a noise that's a cross between a purr and a growl.

Dean watches, torn between curiosity and disgust. ]

You get to teach your pet manners, Cas. [ he gives it a wide berth, circling around it. ] Here, c'mon, let's let Sam babysit. Lemme try and fix up your hand.

[The way the dragon falls out of his arms is hardly graceful, and it eats frantically, like it hasn't been around any kind of food in a few days. Maybe it will become a bit more agreeable after this.

Curious as Castiel is to get to examining the dragon more closely, the pain in his hand is ever-present, and if Dean can do something to help with that, then he has no reason to protest.]

It's not a pet. [He wants to make that clear right now. That's not the reason he brought it back here.

He trusts that Sam will be capable of watching it, and so after nodding to him Castiel moves over to Dean, extending his injured hand toward him.] Go ahead. Unless we need to move.
