[ The dragon abandons Sam's lap for the significantly better one of Castiel, and chirps up at him like some kind of bird, almost. Dean looks less impressed, especially when Sam takes the other spot and leaves Dean with the spot by Cas' head.

Grudgingly, he goes to settle in, only to groan as he gets back up and fetches a washcloth.

He hands that to Cas, sprawling out on half of the couch, giving the little dragon the stink eye. ]

He'd make a really interesting jacket. Guess he's not big enough for that, though. Boots, ma-

Dean.

[While Castiel takes the wash cloth from Dean, he does it with a glare.] Yes, you've made your point that you think we should kill it as soon as we get the chance. Thank you. [Dean, why did you ever teach him sarcasm?

He peers down at the dragon, though, leaning forward to start wiping all the blood off of its snout. Not much can be done about the meat caught between its fangs, but Castiel imagines that'll sort itself out eventually.

When he's done, he sets the cloth down and leans back, but the dragon almost instantly jumps up to settle on top of him. Letting out a small "oomph," Castiel has to jerk his head back to avoid being smacked right in the face by one of those wings.

Plus its claws are digging into his abdomen.] If you're going to do that, you need to lay down.

[He keeps talking to it. Castiel realizes that's probably a bad sign, but there's no harm in checking to see if it can understand human speech.]

Whoa, princess, get your panties outta their wad, okay.

[ Except he's totally not upset, he's actually kind of delighted, because Cas' sarcasm is sometimes absolutely excellent. Dean frowns down at the little monster and purses his lip a moment, considering. It's pretty enough, he supposes - all shiny scales and thin wings that don't look like it'd carry it, but it's still young.

They're still not keeping the goddamn thing but it's not totally horrific.

He kicks his legs up on the coffee table and tosses the remote to Sam while the two of them watch the dragon circle three times like a dog, and then settle into Castiel's chest, tucking its snout right up under his jaw. ]

...I hope it doesn't think you're its mom.

There's nothing wrong with my underwear. [They could go back and forth like this for a while if Sam doesn't stop them.

Still, Castiel can see Sam glaring out of the corner of his eye, and he's willing to let it go if Dean is. He's not in a state to figure out what exactly to do with the dragon right now, though he realizes he shouldn't even allow himself to get this attached.

But it's gotten comfortable on top of him, and he doesn't have it in him to shove it off. So long as it isn't breathing fire or trying to gnaw or scratch at anything. It's been surprisingly docile so far, but that could easily change as it gets older.

At Dean's comment, Castiel scoffs.] I doubt that. [He doesn't exactly look like a full-grown dragon, after all.] But seeing how it doesn't have one, and seeing how we've proved that we're capable of feeding it, I'm not surprised that it's reacted this way.

[Which doesn't really answer the question of what they're going to do with it, but Castiel can worry about that when he isn't so spacey from the pills and when his hand isn't hurting quite so much.]

Uh-huh.

[ Thankfully Dean doesn't seem inclined to try and bicker anymore. He's too comfortable on the couch after what's been a mess of a day and doesn't seem inclined to get up. Sam does him one better, heading to the fridge to grab three beers, returning only for Dean to snipe Cas' before he can have it.

He levels a finger at him, all good humor gone. ]

Only water for you.

[ Dean's not unaware of the date - of the situation, of Cas' humanity. He's not letting 2014 happen, not letting Cas slip that far down. The dragon makes a disgruntled noise at Dean's irritation and promptly stretches out to take up as much room on Castiel as is possible. ]

How's the hand holdin' up?

[Castiel doesn't have the love affair with beer that Dean does, so he doesn't particularly mind. He's been told that pills and alcohol are a bad mix, and he has no intention of doing any further damage to his body.

The dragon is getting nice and comfortable and while the weight is enough to make breathing slightly more difficult, they've managed to make it work.

He takes a sip of the water and then sets it down on the floor so it's easily accessible, letting out a sigh. If Dean's going to ask about his hand every twenty minutes, Castiel's going to get annoyed very quickly.]

It's fine. The medicine is helping. If we can teach it to not do that again, then we should be set to study it by tomorrow.

[Sam is going to have to do a lot of the hands-on stuff for obvious reasons, but Castiel still wants to be a part of it.]

[ A horrible mix, unless you're Dean, in which case mixing alcohol and pills means it's Tuesday. ]

Yeah, you and Sammy can nerd out over the him.

[ He's not going to get involved because they're not keeping it. It's temporary. The look that Sam gives him says everything, honestly - Sam knows exactly what he's thinking and from the little smile on his lips Sam's doubting it's actually temporary.

Dean narrows his eyes at him, and turns to the TV instead, finding that less infuriating than little brothers and angels and dragons.



Time passes and Dean finds that they don't, in fact, get rid of the dragon. The damn thing has a habit of crawling up onto the counters when he's cooking, trying to snipe bits of food and then half-flying, half-wobbling away as it gets used to its wings and Dean chases it off.

It's like having a huge catlike dog, he thinks, and much as he wants to say he hates the damn thing, he finds himself sort of freakishly attached. Charlie declares it awesome and ends up staying a few more days with it, Kevin seems attached and Dean - well.

The first day he finds it curled up on top of his bed when he wants to take a nap, he shuts up and deals with it and finds the dragon curled up at the small of his back when he wakes up. It seems to be too dumb to realize that he's totally not the one who likes it, and the scraps he feeds it from the table are for convenience, not because he's being nice, nope.

He takes to calling it Boots, too, mostly starting as a joke and a threat and then finds it sticking, not that he ever admits it to anyone else.

Dean's elbow deep in the guts of the Impala while Cas and Sam are out, and the dragon keeps getting into things, knocking over tools and playing with things and finally Dean picks it up and deposits it next to him, pointing a greasy finger at it. Don't think I won't make you into boots, he says, and the dragon snorts like it understands and totally doesn't believe him. It's how he winds up fiddling with the car's engine with the dragon curled around his shoulders somehow, so it can watch exactly what he's doing.

He would've thought it was more heavy, but it makes sense - it's got birdlike bones, all hollow and light which means it curls over his shoulder and isn't too obtrusive. ]

Make yourself useful, Boots.

[ Dean glances back at it with a frown, holding up one of the tools and watching it latch onto it to start playing with it, keeping it easily accessible while he works a screw loose. ]

[Sam and Castiel do perform a full examination, at least as much as they can manage with the tools available to them, and they determine that the dragon is in fact male. They study its bone structure, particularly the ones in the wings. They study how it's capable of breathing fire, and slowly but surely, they manage to train it too.

Which doesn't mean that the dragon always behaves himself. That's hardly the case, and there are plenty of times when even Castiel has been pushed to the edge of patience and threatened to throw it out of the bunker entirely.

But the fact is, he has a soft spot for the little thing. While Dean calls him Boots, Castiel usually calls him by an Enochian name which roughly translates to Tiny Wings. Sam's taken to the name Boots, if only to not confuse the dragon even further by giving it three different names.

While they're required to keep him inside, there's at least enough space for the dragon to stretch its legs and its wings. When it chooses to fly it usually ends in some kind of mess, but not that much damage has been done. And since that first time, there have only been a few fire-breathing incidents, and none of them have ended in injury.

The important thing is that they've managed to assert dominance over him, which means that most of the time, if Castiel raises his voice it's effective in stopping Boots from misbehaving.

As Castiel and Sam return from doing a supply run on a particular day, Castiel finds Dean and Boots out in the garage, and Boots is playing with one of Dean's wrenches. As soon as Boots catches sight of him, he tosses the wrench aside and bounds over.

Sometimes he really seems more like a dog than a dragon. Castiel peers down fondly.]

I'm going to need to put these things down before I can play. [Boots is too big to be easily carried anymore, but despite the fact that he's more or less a large lizard, he enjoys being pet.]

[ If anyone ever asks, he'll totally deny that he kinda likes the little guy. As far as he's concerned, it doesn't matter how long it's been, it's just temporary. They can't keep a friggin' dragon (except for the fact that they totally are.)

They keep it, though, and soon enough Dean gives up the threats of getting rid of it, and sticks with the tried and true ones about skinning him.

As much as the dragon likes him, it's clear that Cas is the one he likes the most. Boots will abandon almost anything he's doing when the ex-angel comes in and this time is no different. ]

Dude, he was getting into everything.

[ Dean glances back, wrapping up the work on the car, wiping his hands off as he comes over to help Cas with the groceries. ]

Think he's getting all cabin-fever being locked up in here. He tried to drink motor oil.

Motor oil?

[Even for a dragon, that's bound to be unhealthy and possibly even fatal. Boots has been happy enough with the meat they've been giving him, though sometimes they mix in some potatoes or other greens. They've managed to determine that dragons are omnivores, interestingly enough.

Castiel makes a small motion with his hand that indicates Boots should stay put, and then heads through the garage so that they can set everything down in the kitchen inside. Boots, despite being a little terror at times, is actually rather intelligent when he wants to be.

Castiel glances from Dean to Sam as he starts to put everything away.]

... We should take him out to a place where he has space to move around, but I'm not sure where would be safe. [A large open field? A canyon? But wherever they go, there's the threat of being seen.]

Yeah, he thought it was a blast.

[ Dean rolls his eyes and wraps up work on the car, wiping oil onto a towel as he follows all of them out into the kitchen while they start putting things away. ]

I dunno where that'd be - if he runs off, there's no telling if we can catch him.

[ And he doesn't think that a leash will go over very well with the dragon, honestly. ]

We can see about like...a dogpark at night? Those are fenced in.

I don't know that his wings are large enough to fly him all that far yet.

[Which means that so long as they're in a somewhat enclosed space, it should be fine. But if the little one does end up growing larger, Castiel realizes that it'll eventually become impossible for them to accommodate him.

And what then? It's not as if they can just send him out into the world, even if he is domesticated. Opening the door to Purgatory and tossing Boots in would be both dangerous and cruel.

It's something Castiel's going to need to think on in the next few weeks, because they might not have much more time to figure out a solution.]

A dog park could work. [He turns to Dean as he finishes putting the groceries away, grabbing for a package of ground beef that he got for Boots.] Breaking and entering shouldn't be overly difficult for you, either.

Probably not, yeah.

[ Dean eyes the bag of lettuce and spinach that Sam and Cas purchased, and then eyes Sam in an equally displeased way, because come on now. They seriously don't need a whole bag of this rabbit food.

There are, however, little mini pies from the bakery and he could kiss whoever got those, honestly.

Holding the pies in one hand, he brushes past Castiel, one hand placed against his hip to keep him from bumping back into him while he's got his arms stacked and then he makes it to the pantry, stuffing the minis in there. ]

Should be fine. [ AND EXCUSE U!!! Dean turns with raised eyebrows as Sam stifles a laugh. ] Wow, buddy, you got somethin' you wanna say about my life choices?

[If he wants to kiss the one responsible for the pies, then that would require tonguing with a certain ex-angel. (Are you really ready for that, Dean?)

It's not as if Castiel's only resorted to eating healthy food. It's something he tries to be aware of, but he has his vices. He's got another bag of coffee grounds and filters, along with a packet of ground beef that's meant for some homemade burgers rather than being Boots' dinner.

When Dean's hand sets against his hip, particularly the one where he's tattooed, Castiel straightens for a moment and glances over his shoulder. He and Dean have never been shy about physical contact, but usually it's a gripping hand on the shoulder or a brief but tight hug. This is something else and while it isn't worth commenting on, that doesn't stop Castiel from quietly taking note of it.]

... Not at all. It's working to our advantage. [He shrugs casually.] There's no need to be defensive.

[ No, because boys are gross. Dean starts divvying up everything that's in one arm and putting it away, barely having noticed the touch. It wasn't a big deal in his mind - he was making sure that Cas didn't back up into him and there wasn't room to -

Well.

No, it was intentional, if not slightly subconscious. This place is making him soft, he's treating it like how when he was with Lisa and that's dangerous. That turned out like shit last time and there's no way to fix it.

Still. It's easier to focus on this - the faint amusement at Castiel, the way Dean's lips twitch up as he teases. ]

That's the politest way anyone's ever implied I'm some kinda crook, you know?

Seeing how you and Sam subsist off of credit card fraud, it's hardly inaccurate.

[Castiel doesn't see why this is such an issue in the first place. Dean and Sam have been breaking law after law after since he met them, and Castiel's never questioned it. It's part of being a hunter, from what he understands.

It's not as if Castiel hasn't done the same in the past, although now that he's human that's changed considerably. He mainly lets Dean and Sam worry about the finances, but he's slowly becoming more aware of just how important currency is for humans.

With everything put away, Castiel turns his attention to Boots, who races over to him and practically slobbers all over his hand. It's difficult to decide if the dragon resembles a cat or a dog more.

He glances over his shoulder at Dean.] When should we take him?

Yeah, and remind me we get to teach you that, too.

[ Truthfully, he's a little concerned about the fact that Cas might end up without them at some point. The last thing he wants is him to end up with a bunch of hobos under a bridge or something because he doesn't know how to be human.

Snagging one of the pies, he closes the drawer and unwraps it. It's one of the little hand-held ones, practically a pie sandwich situation and Dean takes a bite with a little hum of satisfaction. Sam looks less enthused about the pie, but he's got his stupid salads so he can suck it up. ]

Sometime after dark. I know he ain't exactly gonna be thrilled, but we may wanna look into a leash.

[Teach him? Castiel can barely wrap his head around the basic concept of what they do. Getting into the paperwork and logistics of it does not sound like his idea of a good time, and he doesn't exactly hide that either, with the face that he pulls.

He realizes that Dean's trying to look out for him, but if it comes to that, he would rather get himself a job and earn some money the traditional way. That seems far more reasonable than running a scam. Doing that requires being smooth and Castiel has come to accept that he isn't.

Oddly enough, even though Boots is scaled, he likes to be pet, and so Castiel's bending down to do just that when a leash is mentioned.]

You're right. He won't like it, but we can give it a try. If we go that route, we'll need to get a very strong leash. [Boots is bound to just tear through most of them. Or he might try to burn them off, so they'll need to keep an eye out for that too.]

[ Hey, there's no pity to be had for you here, buddy. It doesn't sound like a good time to him either, mostly because of the reasons Cas has. He's too honest - he wouldn't be able to do the lying and the faking that it'd take to run those scams, not right away.

A terrible part of him points out that Cas was able to lie to him and Sam for ages, though, and that still stings so he doesn't think too hard about it. ]

We can try something metal. Leather collar, but metal leash. Get him wearing the collar or like one of those dog harnesses 'round the house and then we attach it. Won't even notice it's there.

[ Unless he tries to fly off. ]

If we can get him used to it here in a space he's comfortable with, that may work. [Domesticating a dragon is hardly the smartest idea they've ever had, but it's something that's just happened without Castiel meaning for it.

Still, it's gone well enough so far. Sometimes Boots makes a mess and things are hardly perfect, but he hasn't scorched anything important and he's even learned how to ride around in Dean's car.]

We'll need to go searching for one. Or maybe this would be better to find on... the internet.

[Even now, the internet is a rather strange place for Castiel. He's learned the basics of searching and using Google, but beyond that it still seems like a very mysterious place. Nonetheless, he can't deny the usefulness of online shopping.]

[ Domesticating a dragon is seriously not the best idea they've ever had but it's what they've got. Dean's still fixed on the mantra of not keeping him not keeping him not keeping him but by this point he's pretty sure everyone knows he's full of shit anyway.

Besides, adjusting to the little monster hasn't been that bad, he supposes. It's weird waking up to a big lump on his chest when he's trying to crash on the couch, but not altogether bad. ]

I actually think there's one off Roy Rogers road.

[ Dean turns to glance at Sam when he points that out, considering. Yeah, he saw a fenced in area but hadn't given it too much thought. ]

Yeah. We can scope it out.

[So they even have a place in mind for where they could take Boots, and from the way that Sam and Dean are speaking, it doesn't sound as if it's that far away either.

It's frustrating that he has to consider things like distance now, but it's become a necessary evil in his life. Transportation is still something he's not very fond of, but he's slowly gotten used to it.

Boots still has his wings, but unless he grows bigger, they won't do him all that much good. Castiel's hand moves from the dragon's back down to a wing, brushing lightly over it.]

We could go now, if you have the energy for it.

[Boots might not like it if Castiel leaves again, but so long as Sam stays behind it should be fine.]

Dude, be a little less excited, okay.

[ He keeps the teasing tone, lips twitching up just a little bit at the way Cas is so eager to take him out, get him some time outside of the bunker. He can't blame him, but at the same time, it's kind of ridiculous how he's so into this.

(Because Dean's not. He's totally not, nope. Not one bit.) ]

Yeah, we can. It's...actually probably dark enough we could bring Boots along, get him -

[ At hearing his name, the dragon lifts his head and chirps curiously, waddling over and placing clawed paws on Dean's knee, butting his head up against his hand in a clear motion to make him pet him. ]

Yeah, talkin' about you, buddy, not at you, get your claws off my legs.

[ He steps back gingerly, jerking his chin to the door. ]

You wanna go? Sammy can you hold down the fort?

[Is he conveying excitement? It could be the fact that he's eager to get out and find a place for Boots, but it's not as if they had any other plans for the day, beyond Dean making them lunch and then sitting back to watch a few movies.

At first, it had bothered him. He'd wondered how the Winchesters couldn't spend every waking moment looking for another job or researching. But since becoming human, Castiel's slowly learned to appreciate some of the finer things.

Like having a pet dragon, apparently.

Boots has definitely taken a liking to Dean, and Castiel manages a small smile as he watches the dragon move over to try and get Dean's attention.]

We can go. But are you sure it's okay to take him without a leash?

We can make something pretty fast. The garage has a ton of stuff.

[ Dean gives the little monster one pat on the head, jerking his chin to the door leading to the garage. He's seen a few various things that'd work - chains at the very least, and he's pretty sure he can fashion something up with what's laying around in the garage. It'd be easier if the damn thing spoke english, but that's probably asking a little too much.

Sam helps him out before he can do anything, though, vanishing down the hall with a just a sec and coming back with something held in his hands that Boots waddles across the ground to see, tail lashing back and forth. ]

I found a bunch of these, actually- supposed to go in the dungeon, I think.

[ It's a collar - metal, with etchings on it, and room for a chain to hook into the front. ]

If you wrap it in cloth or something, it shouldn't irritate his scales.
