[ The worst of all of this is they're still no closer to figuring this shit out, and he's hungry and he's soaked. Fuck everything.

Dean keeps the windows rolled up and flicks the heat on, dragging a hand through his hair with a grimace. ]

Next time, we'll just go in and take care of it. People were getting attacked out back in the alley, not in the friggin' bathroom.

[ A few signs speed past, exits and other items. There's a sign for a late night diner and Dean's stomach growls. Beer isn't exactly a dinner. ]

You hungry?

[Yet, Dean had been attacked in the bathroom, so is there any way for them to predict what will happen next?

Granted, now that they have that key the ghost may be following them. They can sometimes move with items, even though it's rare.

In the end, they'll need to turn to books to figure out the rest, and so he doesn't press the subject.

He is hungry, and while Castiel's still reluctant to admit that despite being human for some time now, he nods slowly.]

We can take something back to Sam.

[ Yeah, Dean mostly just wants to get home, toss the thing in a box and figure out what the fuck is going on. He's got a good idea of what the ghost looked like and they have some time bought, thankfully. At least a few days, because it's not like it'll be obvious if anyone on the cleaning crew is someone it'd target. ]

Okay.

[ He pulls off at the next diner, and cringes a bit at the mess of his hair and the soaked state of his shirt, his jacket doing a little bit to cover it. He's vain enough to try and make some kind of sense of his hair, dragging a hand through it, only to have it come away a little sticky with the product that got messed up from the water. One disgusted noise later, he's got his wallet in hand, shaking his head. ]

C'mon. I need pie before anything else.

[As Castiel watches Dean adjusting his hair, he realizes this may not have been the best idea after all. He's been in wet clothing before, he's well aware of how uncomfortable it is, and he doubts that Dean wants to spend a lot of time in those soaked garments.

Better to get home and get him a hot shower so that he can dry off and settle into the robe he normally wears around the bunker. Then they can start fresh tomorrow with the research.

Still, he follows Dean out of the car, as they'll need to get food one way or another.]

We can take it to go, if you'd like. [Dean isn't shivering, but Castiel feels cold simply look at him. It's a strange sensation, something that only came about after he Fell.]

[ Yeah, it isn't ideal but he'll live. This isn't the worst thing that's ever happened. He zips up the jacket all the way so they don't see his throat, and shakes his head one final time to try and get his hair to stay out of his eyes. ]

Yeah, s'the idea.

[ He slips inside and holds the door long enough for Cas to follow, before heading over to the waitress at the front with a squeak of his feet. Sam's order is easy enough - salad, and Dean grabs a burger and a milkshake with pie in it which sounds amazing, before glancing at Cas. ]

And whatever he's gettin'.

[A milkshake with pie in it. It seems like that much sugar in one glass should be illegal, but Castiel doesn't say anything. Dean's sweet tooth isn't something that's up for discussion, and after what he just went through he's earned some indulgences.

Castiel ordered burgers almost exclusively when he first became human, but he'd actually gotten sick of them and so he's started to branch out.

So instead, he orders a roast beef sandwich, which is extremely different from a cheeseburger in his opinion. It's not the sort of thing worth arguing, really.

Once the order is put in, Castiel turns toward Dean, but he looks just as pathetic as he had when he got out of the car. People are shooting them glances too, or looking outside to see if it's raining. With a sigh, Castiel shrugs out of his jacket and hands it over.] Here.

[ Dean's eating habits are abysmal at best, diabetes inducing at worst. On the plus side he's pretty sure that since he's not going to live to be that old, it's not like diabetes will be that much of an issue.

He wrinkles his nose just a touch at the roast beef, but doesn't argue it, settling himself in on the stool, beaming when the milkshake comes and he can gleefully stab his straw into it, and take a long drink. He shivers almost directly after - probably wasn't a good idea to get something cold, but it's so fucking good he just doesn't care.

Still, he eyes the coat when it's offered, glancing up at Cas. ]

I'm fine, dude.

[ The goosebumps are really convincing, Dean. He glances at it, and then the jacket, and fuck it, it's warm and dry, and that's the best part.

Exhaling in defeat, he snags it and gingerly puts it on, feeling utterly ridiculous and not really knowing why. Maybe it's the two jackets thing. Probably. ]

You aren't gonna get cold?

[Ordering a milkshake when he's already wet doesn't count as Dean's most shining moment, no. At least he does take the coat, though. If he'd refused, that would have hit a ridiculous level of stubbornness.

Castiel was taught how to dress by the Winchesters, so he has a couple of layers underneath the jacket. Dean's letting his concern get out of hand, if he's really asking him that.

He lets out a slow sigh and nods.] No. This place is heated and so is the car. I'm not wet. I'll be fine.

[It's almost as if Dean tries to overcompensate when he's the one who's been hurt by worrying over Castiel even more, and it's the sort of thing that could get on his last nerve before long.

Strangely enough, they're appearing more like a couple now than they ever did in that club.]

[ Shut up, it's awesome. Pie in a milkshake.

Dean sweeps his eyes over him, taking in the sight of all those layers and he can't help the little huff of breath that's dangerously close to a laugh. He's learning, that's for sure. ]

Yeah, okay.

[ Dean huddles in, not above just nursing his milkshake because it's so good to have something solid after everything that has been going on. Once the order's up, he grabs the bags and hands one off to Cas to hang onto so he can get his keys and hop back in the car. He keeps the jacket on, mostly because he doesn't want to get the inside of Baby too soaked and once Cas is settled, he takes them back home. ]

Hamburgers not doing it for you anymore, huh?

[It doesn't take long for the food to arrive, and after having that pie milkshake, Dean's good mood is bound to last for a couple of hours at least.

It must be nice, to be cheered up by something so simple. On the other hand, it could be that Dean simply has to find happiness wherever he can get it.

Castiel piles back into the car, storing the food by his feet. At that question, he glances over to Dean in the driver's seat and shrugs.]

I've been trying to expand my palette.

[The best part is that he doesn't even seem to be joking. For him, changing from burgers to roast beef is apparently a big step.]

[ Dean grins, wide and easy as he leans back and starts driving, heading back to Sam. It's not like his food will go cold, necessarily, but he wants to make sure that Sam's eating on a consistent basis, too. ]

Look at you, trying to be all classy human. Next you'll be askin' for escargot and classy wines.

[ He shakes his head, glancing at his milkshake and then tilts it to him, nowhere near sloshing because he's sure as hell not about to get milkshake on the inside of her. ]

This ain't exactly classy, but it's good f'you wanna try.

I don't know that I'm completely sold by the idea of eating... snails.

[It seems to Castiel that humans often decide to put the strangest things in their mouths, and it's only one out of five times that it doesn't end up poisoning them. It's a sign of how daring they are, how prepared they are to try anything in order to survive, but that doesn't mean he needs to subscribe to some of the stranger delicacies.

He'll stick with red meat for now, and maybe from there he'll expand out further to things like poultry or fish. It's a slow-going thing, but...

When offered the milkshake, Castiel sizes it up before reaching out to take it from Dean. He takes a small sip and then gives a quick shake of his head.]

It's... very sugary.

I dunno, I've never really wanted to try 'em either.

[ He's quite alright without it. Dean wipes the condensation off of his hand once the milkshake is in Castiel's hands and takes the next turn back to their place, nudging up the music just a touch.

It's kind of freakishly domestic, but he likes this. Ghost bullshit aside, he's...nearing comfortable, having Sam and Castiel there. Going out and getting food, doing all these normal things without everything else hanging over their heads. ]

Not a fan?

[ Dean snorts. ]

S'okay, more for me.

[ He pulls in shortly after, grabbing one of the bags and taking his milkshake back. ]

You wanna feed Boots? He's probably gonna lose his shit if we eat in front of him.

[As for Castiel, the whole idea of domesticity is still new and strange to him. They've been at it for a few months now, but he doesn't yet feel like he fits in properly. He realizes that's mainly all in his head, that both Sam and Dean are more than happy to have him, but...

Is this really going to be his life now? Is he ready to accept that?

Apparently he is, because as Dean parks, Castiel lets himself out of the car and then nods to his question.]

I'll feed him first, and then we can worry about ourselves.

[Otherwise, Dean's right -- Boots will be circling around them like a shark, waiting for scraps of food.

Castiel walks through the garage and into the main bunker area, where he's met by an excited grunt and the flapping of wings. Boots manages to not bowl him over, which is a miracle. Instead, Castiel kneels down to run his hands over a scaled back.] We weren't gone that long.

[ that's part of the worry. He wants this to be something that they're both okay with, but he's not even sure how okay he'll be with this a month, a year from now. Normal never works out, it's stupid to think that it will. Chasing fantasies of a life where they're normal guys who happen to know about monsters and have a fucking dragon - yeah, no, not feasible.

They'll see how it goes, though. Nothing to do but keep on trucking. ]

Yeah, before he gnaws off your legs.

[ Dean gives him a faint pat on the head as he walks past, Boots' head trailing after him, sniffing at his fingers like he can tell there's fast food there, doing a rather impressive look of betrayed they brought food without him. ]

S'forever when you gotta pet.

[ Not that he's an expert, but hey, whatever.

Dean heads up and finds Sam, dropping a salad down, waving off concern about his throat that's clearly visible. He's still wearing Castiel's jacket, a fact only noticed when Sam's eyebrows go way up and he plucks at it. ]

Huh.

[Castiel would never admit this out loud, having someone (or something, rather) who is almost always excited to see him is... nice. Boots has always been the most attached to him, possibly because he was the one who found him.

So even if it's forever, he won't exactly mind. So long as he makes it seem like he's exasperated, that should be enough to stave off any remarks about it. He learned that one from Dean.

After a few more seconds of petting, Castiel gets up and heads into the kitchen with Boots following at his heels.

He cranes his neck to look into the other room where Sam and Dean are, and nods a greeting to Sam.]

... Dean, you should change into some dry clothing before you do anything else. [Castiel says this, not realizing that it almost verges on mother henning, as he digs into the fridge for some steaks.]

[ He doesn't need your shit, Sam. Dean drags the jacket off with a grimace and acts like it totally didn't happen at all. He settles it over the back of a chair to dry, and purses his lips a moment as he picks through the bag until he gets to his burger, and takes a drag of his shake. ]

I got soaked by a fire alarm and sprinkler system.

[ The burger gets shoved into Cas' chest, with a finger pointed at him. ]

Stick this in the oven for me, 300 degrees, on a plate without all the wrappin'. Don't let that guy get it. [ And his pointing turns to the dragon, who looks utterly innocent. ]

I'm gonna take a shower.

[Castiel takes the burger, setting it aside on the counter as he remains aware of Boots' reptilian eyes tracking it. He's used to keeping an eye on the dragon to see that he doesn't steal their food, and for the most part he's been trained to not do that. But there are always moments where he slips...

Oddly enough, Castiel knows how to use the oven now. Nothing about what Dean asks for confuses him, and so instead he only nods.

It's for the best that Dean takes a shower right away, and so Castiel's relieved that he came to that conclusion on his own instead of having to be pestered into it.]

It'll be ready when you get out.

[And with that, he opens up the packages of meat and sets Boots' dinner out for him before putting Dean's burger in the oven to warm.

Once that's all done, he takes his roast beef sandwich and goes to sit with Sam, letting out a sigh. It's been a long day.]

[ Dean has no doubts if the guys are busy and he leaves his burger unattended, the dragon's gonna go for it. He's not about to let that happen, thanks.

The jacket secured, Dean slides his own off and onto the back of another chair, squelching his way down the hall with a heavy sigh to go take the world's hottest shower. ]

[ It's not like a jacket is exactly a big deal. This isn't high school, isn't girls wearing boy's letterman jackets. But still, man, it's a little weird.

Sam's lips twitch up a bit as he pokes around his salad, leaning forward, tone low just in case. ]

So you guys met the ghost, huh? How'd Dean end up screwing with the sprinklers?

[Castiel considers his question while working on a bite of his sandwich, only responding once he's swallowed. He's picked up some manners, thankfully.]

He took his lighter with him, so I suspect that played a factor.

[Tricking the building into thinking there was a fire would trigger water spraying out, if he thought about it logically.]

We found a key that we think it was bound to and we burned it, but... it isn't enough. We'll need to do more research tomorrow.

[ It's probably a testament to how well he knows his brother that he doesn't do more than just nod his head a touch. Yeah, that makes sense. ]

Probably set them off so no one else would go in there.

[ Good plan. Sucks for the business owners, but right now they probably don't have a lot of options. Sam's not going to argue the point right now.

Instead, he just digs into his salad, chewing thoughtfully. ]

So the ghost thought you were...together? It worked out? That was uh-- a short night.

We didn't do much to convince it beyond... engaging in more physical contact than usual.

[Castiel shrugs and takes another bite. It seems they'd done their job well enough, even if not all that much had been different.

Though it could also have been a matter of Dean being in the wrong place at the wrong time.]

Dean went to the restroom, and that may have been where it targeted people. [That would hardly be the first time. Ghosts seem to enjoy terrorizing people in bathrooms.]

[ And Sam has to remind himself that it's A) not a good idea to laugh, and B) not helpful, either.

It's a close thing, though. His lips twitch instead, and he nods, amused. ]

Well, it bought us a few days.

I did some digging and I think I might have something for us to look into when he's back from his shower.

[Castiel can tell that Sam's amused by the situation, but he manages to hold back, most likely because Dean isn't present.

It's not something they need to dwell on, as far as he's concerned. Castiel's more interested in what Sam may have found.]

I'd ask you to tell me now, but then you'd have to repeat yourself for Dean.

[He'll focus on eating instead. Boots, meanwhile, has scarfed down his food and goes to lay under the table between Sam and Castiel's feet.]
