[The explanation is long overdue and much appreciated. Same-sex couples of any kind are being targeted, which is why they'll need to do well enough to pass as one. Dean must be very put off by the idea, with how he's been acting.

Still, if they want to draw out this ghost, then they'll need to be convincing enough. They're just going to have to bear through it, even if this is something neither of them has really done before.

Castiel steps out of the car, peering toward the nearby door that leads into the club. He can see some flashing lights and hear the blaring music from here. It's not quite the same as a strip club, obviously. Which means he's never been to a place like this before.

He places his hands in his pockets, shifting his weight from one leg to the other, and then nods.]

We... shouldn't waste any time. [But Dean's going to have to take the lead here.]

[ Very put off by the idea doesn't even begin to describe it. It's like saying a thunderstorm is a sprinkling of rain. The whole mentality of not dealing with anything ever works pretty goddamn well for him, and he'd like to keep doing that, thanks.

There's no way to, now, though. Just get through this hunt and he'll be fine, he'll be all set.

He stares a moment at the other man, realizing that bar hookups and dating as a teenager and early 20s didn't...really do him any favors, because it's never been like this. The last time he'd done it - well. Jo wasn't exactly someone he wanted to think about right now. That kind of guilt could wait til later.

Grimacing just a touch, he skims the area around them, and gingerly reaches his hand out. ]

C'mere.

[ If Cas doesn't step close enough, Dean just reaches out, and presses a hand up under his jacket, smoothing it along his back and leads him toward the club where he pays for both of them and drops the hand nearly as soon as they're in. ]

I'm getting a drink. D'you want one?

[When Dean beckons him closer, Castiel obliges. If either one of them is going to know how to do this, it would obviously be Dean, and so Castiel's willing to follow his lead on this. It's probably the only way they'll get through it and actually come across as convincing.

Dean's hand snakes up his back, settling there gently. He's warm. Even with all of the shoulder pats, all the times they've dragged each other from battlefields, Dean has never touched him like this.

It's different, enough to make Castiel's stomach feel like it's jumping around inside his body. He lets out a breath, something that's easily masked by the loud music as they step inside.

When asked about a drink, Castiel looks around. Almost everyone here has a beverage of some kind, so to fit in...]

Yes. You can surprise me. [He isn't an expert on alcohol, nor is he picky.]

[ At least Castiel doesn't fight him on this. They'll just get in there, schmooze a little and then be done with it. That's all. Dean cringes a little bit at the heavy beat of the music as he leads them in and picks the table that's fairly in the middle of all the chaos.

If it's too loud, you're too old.

Ain't that a depressing thought.

Dean nods in response to the drink comment, though - surprises generally aren't what he wants to go with, with booze, but he figures Cas is probably a lightweight anyway, so he just flashes a grin at the cute blonde bartender and pays for two beers and starts an open tab.

God knows he'll need a lot of alcohol for this.

Slipping back up front, Dean plunks a full glass in front of Cas and drains a good quarter of his own down, settling into the chair. The victims were all led out of this bar for some reason, which means the easiest thing is going to be to figure out who might be a potential vic and who isn't. Which means - ugh. Dean really doesn't want to stare creepily at people, but that's what it's going to come down to. ]

Hey, move over.

[ There's plenty of room in the booth next to Cas, so Dean sits up, shoves his ass right there next to him, plunking down and taking another healthy drink of his beer. It's easier to talk like this, and hopefully talking about the case will look...well, he doesn't know. Romantic or something. ]

Easiest thing is gonna be to try and figure out who might be targeted.

[Castiel remains seated as Dean heads off to get the alcohol, and he takes that time to look around and examine what's going on. Some people are dancing. There are those who dance alone, those who dance together, and those who seem to... grind against each other more than anything.

There's the loud music. There's people in the corners sipping drinks and talking in high voices over the music. It seems impractical, all of this does, especially with so many people crammed into such a small space.

Castiel pulls at his collar. Being able to feel temperature is not a pleasant part of being human, if there even is such a thing.

He makes space for Dean when he returns, taking a long drink from his glass before he sets it down again. They're supposed to be intimately involved, and so after taking a moment to watch how other couples are behaving, Castiel slips his arm around Dean's back until his hand is resting on the opposite shoulder.

At least being that close makes it easier to speak discreetly, despite the noise.]

If it's a ghost, then it wouldn't be able to lead them anywhere. Does that mean a human's working with it? [Castiel's eyes are sharp as he tries to track all of the movement around them. Easier said than done, with how crowded it is.]

[ He should've gotten shots. Christ.

The music's too loud, the girls are all wearing short skirts and normally, he'd take a second to appreciate it, but they're all so fucking young, Jesus. He cringes a bit- not sure when he got so old, and focuses on the case. The case is a safe subject.

The case is also what brings Cas' arm around his shoulders, leaving Dean's eye wide, jumping at the initial touch. ]

Wh- maybe?

[ Wow, buddy, get your shit together. Dean swallows hard and takes a long drink, before gingerly inching himself closer, letting himself lean into Cas. ]

Could be something they hear, or see or something on their way out.

[Dean leans in toward him, just as Castiel would expect him to. Not because Dean wants that, but because it's what couples seem to do. Sit close together, with no space between them. Wrap arms around one another, speaking in low tones so that everyone around them wonders what they're talking about.

It's what most of the other couples are doing here. Either that, or they're out on the dancefloor grinding against each other, and this seems to be the easier option.]

Something projected so that they're the only ones to see or hear it?

[It seems complex for a ghost, but that doesn't mean it's out of the question. That's the difficult thing about ghosts. They can possess a number of different items, and even be controlled by living beings at times.

Either way, it looks like they'll need to get comfortable and keep an eye on things to determine how it all plays out. With any luck, they're the ones who'll be targeted.]

[ Dean shrugs idly, not sure at this point. It could be that. Could be something else entirely. They won't know for sure until they get some kind of sign or some idea of it past the vague descriptions from the people they'd talked to. Easier if they can face it and figure it out, while Sam does the research. ]

Could be. This place is loud enough that it'd be hard to hear anything anyway, and the lights don't help with seeing anything.

[ There's a cute girl that wanders past and Dean shifts, glancing over her for a split second before he realizes he can't do that here, and promptly turns his attention back to Cas, frowning and curling his hand down, hooking it over Cas' hip so he's stroking bare skin there. He doesn't miss the way one of the guys gives them both a look and then a little grin, and holy shit, dude, that's the same goddamn look he gives girls.

Dean's eyes go wide, entire train of thought lost, just staring for a moment before he jerks himself out of it. ]

This is friggin' weird.

[If it's something that's more telepathic, then it would override the bad conditions for seeing or hearing... well, much of anything.

But for now, all they can do is play their parts and perform reconnaissance. Castiel takes another sip of his drink, though he's careful not to overdo it. He's what Dean calls a lightweight, and he doesn't want to have a clouded mind while they're trying to work.

Castiel does miss the look from the stranger, mainly because he's distracted by Dean running his hand over his hip, right where his tattoo rests. He tries not to jerk upward in his seat, but Dean's hand is warm and he's not used to the feeling.]

Is it? [His voice comes out rougher than it usually does these days, and he does his best to stay put and act like he's completely comfortable and used to Dean touching him in this way.]

[ The jerking upright doesn't go missed - Dean's hand goes still, straightening up himself. He's not sure if he's seen something or if it's just the touching, the show put on so they don't stick out like sore thumbs. Whichever it is, he supposes, he ought to make sure Cas is okay. ]

You good?

[ His lips twitch just faintly. Cas sounds a little...ruffled, and that's kind of hilarious in a fucked up way. A pause, and then Dean tilts his head, considering as he squints at him. ]

Dude, are you ticklish.

[It's not a question he's ever been asked before. Why would he? Angels certainly aren't ticklish, not when they use human forms for the sake of ease and convenience and nothing more.

But things have changed, which means that for all Castiel knows, he's susceptible to that kind of thing. He's never quite understood why being touched a certain way, or in certain places, will cause humans to laugh... nor does he really want to test it for himself.]

I -- I don't know.

[He hasn't exactly gone out of his way to check.]

Come on, we need to pay attention.

[ Yeah, he doesn't think Cas would know, necessarily, but he asks it all the same, faintly amused. There's the older-brother urge to tickle him, to try and find out if he is, to be a dick like he was to Sam just for shits and giggles, but he doesn't do it.

Instead, he leans back and smooths his palm up rather than his fingers, just in case he really is. ]

I'm paying attention.

[ Dean can't even bother to sound a little bit annoyed at the accusation that he's not; instead, he reaches out and snags his drink with his other hand, finishing it off. ]

I'm gonna get a refill and do a round of the place. Don't -- leave or go anywhere, okay? I'll stay where you can see me.

[Castiel is already preparing for Dean to try and find out for himself if he's ticklish. It won't be now, not when they're working, but sometime after they return to the bunker, it's bound to happen.

And if anything, he can try to be braced for it.

Still, Dean's hand is there, and Castiel's not used to Dean's touch being anything approaching possessive, even if it's just an act. He closes his eyes for a moment, trying to decide how he feels about it.]

... That's fine. I'll stay here. [He opens his eyes slowly.] I'm fine with just one drink, so you don't need to get me another one.

[ Why are you thinking about this, you shouldn't be thinking about this because Dean's about two steps away from making an Olympic sport out of Not Thinking About It.

He shifts away to grab a drink with a little laugh at Cas' comment - yeah, the lightweight doesn't need one.

Dean makes his way to the bar, and is three seconds from chatting up the cute waitress before he remembers. Jesus. It's almost ridiculously easy to get the male bartender's attention, though - he's wearing what looks like eyeliner, but it doesn't look weird, it just makes his eyes stand out. The whole thing is a little weird, treating this just like how he does with the ladies- he flashes a smile, pushes over some cash and chats him up (cars, bands), 'cause it's just another hunt, just another way to roll with what comes up and ends up with a free shot for his trouble.

By the time Dean comes back, he's knocked the shot back and settles in next to Cas again, only to blink at the napkin. ]

...holy shit, he gave me his number.

[ UM. ]

[While Castiel should be keeping an eye on the entire crowd, it's hard to stop himself from returning his attention to where Dean's standing at the bar and speaking with the man who's working there. They seem to be having a good time, at that, and Castiel finds himself confused.

If all Dean had to do was pretend to be interested in another man, wouldn't that bartender have sufficed? Why did they have to get dressed like this? If it's the two of them who are supposed to be posing, then shouldn't Dean be back here?

Deciding that it doesn't matter so long as the hunt is a success, Castiel is busy watching the rest of the crowd by the time that Dean returns.

At Dean's remark, Castiel glances down at the napkin. Maybe an actual boyfriend would be jealous, but instead Castiel just asks:]

Is that good?

[ Yeah, if it were that easy, they would have been fine, but it's not as easy as just, hey, fuck it, let's flirt with a few people and that's good enough to pass as gay.

If only it were that easy.

Dean shrugs, taking a long pull of his drink, crinkling up the napkin and shoving it into his pocket to toss later. ]

No, it's - I dunno.

[ It's not the first time it happened, it's just usually not that instantaneous, even with chicks, unless he's full blown charm and smiles. Dean doesn't know what to make of it.

He takes another sip of his beer, and after a while of crowd-watching, shakes his head. ]

Gonna hit the head. Watch my drink, yeah?

[That isn't much of an explanation, which is frustrating when Castiel's more or less flying blind here. He needs to follow Dean's lead on this, but when he isn't getting clear instructions, all he can do is sit there and hope that they're somehow passing off as intimate.

When Dean decides to excuse himself (with that strange turn of phrase, but at least Castiel knows what it means now), he nods and pulls the drink closer to him.]

I'll be here.

[He even tries a smile, because while it's not how they would normally behave, they're trying to paint a picture of something else here.]

[ Dean...doesn't pick up on it, either. He's trying to do his best but he's not particularly great at this aspect. Still, Cas watches his drink and Dean gets up again to go take a leak, finishing up when the bathroom goes icy-cold, and his breath fogs up in front of him. ]

...Ah, hell.

[ Dean's fresh out of salt or anything useful right now and he goes for the door, only to feel it slam shut and the metal of the knob start to ice over.

He winds up thrown against the first toilet's door, slamming into it and knocking it over, landing in a jumbled heap as he tries to reach for something to strike out, nothing within reach. The lone knife he has skitters out of reach, shoved under the sink and Dean groans, his head throbbing as he pushes himself up to his hands and knees and winds up slammed into the other wall, spitting up blood when he bites his cheek hard enough to break skin.

Almost on autopilot he grabs his phone, just as the ghost lifts him up, squeezing tight around his throat and he presses call, kicking his legs, gagging. ]

[Castiel can be patient when it comes to things like this. Sometimes trips to the bathroom take a while, for various reasons, and so he's content to keep an eye on the crowd and sip at his drink.

But some more time passes, and he finds himself getting restless and keeping an eye on the hallway Dean had gone down in order to get to the restroom.

Then, his phone buzzes in his pocket, and without even checking it Castiel stands from the booth. They're here on a hunt, after all, and it was only a matter of time before they got noticed.

He pushes through the crowds of revelers, earning him a few glares and angry remarks, before he makes it to the restroom and finds that the handle of the door is iced shut.

Gritting his teeth, Castiel backs up and tries to kick it down.]

[ Dean thrashes and feels his feet lift off the ground, a startled, strangled little groan escaping him as he catches sight of the ghost with its hands wrapped around his throat.

It's old. That's the first thing that comes to mind when he looks at it, eyes going wide.

Old clothing, old haircut, everything - fucking great. Dean slams his hand back against the toilet's door when he hears the sound of someone kicking at the door, and thrashes again. The key that he used to get into the bathroom with is in his pocket, he tosses that at the ghost, hopes there's fucking something iron on it, and hits the ground in a heap when it lets him go.

Just as soon as it starts, it's over, and the door breaks open for Cas, while Dean rests on his hands and knees, gasping for a breath. ]

[By the time that Castiel forces his way inside (and that's something that they'll need to explain, unless they can get away from this place quickly), it's all over with. There's no sign of any ghost or other creature, and Dean's on the floor fighting for oxygen.

He can't exactly afford them privacy when the door is broken, but he does his best to close it up again and moves forward to kneel down next to Dean. Breaking the door down is bound to draw some attention, but there's not much they can do about that now.

And so there he is, right at Dean's side, one hand sliding out to support his neck and this isn't something he needs to fake or even think about.]

Are you all right? What happened? [Dean's cold to the touch, a clear sign that a ghost had been here.]

[ Dean's so totally not worried about the door, of all things. There's bruising starting to purple up around his throat where the hands had been, his breathing thick and shaky as he finally catches it and stares at the little key, realizing. ]

I'm fine, I'm--

[ A coughing fit hits him and he wipes his mouth when it's done, half-laughing, half groaning. Fuck everything about this, he should have been better prepared. Not like he can tote ghost stuff inside, but he should have had something. What if it were Cas that went in here? ]

Ghost. Think it's tied to that-

[ And he gestures to the key. ]

C'mon, let's get out before they notice something's up. We'll take it with us.

[Castiel frowns at the finger shaped bruises around Dean's throat and grabs for his wrist, hauling him to his feet. It's a lot of weight to try and heave up, especially when Dean's still shaky, but Castiel manages it.

If he's well enough to stand, then that's a good sign, at least. Dean's been tossed around by ghosts more times than he can probably remember -- he'll be fine. Though Castiel's also wishing they could have brought some iron or salt in with them. It wouldn't have been that hard to snuggle salt in, at the least.

Dwelling on that won't do any good, though. He nods and takes the key.]

Let's go. Now, before the people here figure out what's going on.

[He grabs for Dean's wrist and leads him out of the bathroom and down the hallway, back into the chaos that is the main dance floor. They need to find a back exit.]

[ Dude, he's fine. Dean tries to brush off the hand but ends up staggering when he fights against him being dragged up. Better to just go with it, even if he feels like a fucking idiot.

Fucking stupid. All the other victims were attacked outside of the place, but he should have expected it.

Dean finds himself led out of there, stumbling through the crowd a little gracelessly with everyone dancing, brushing past a few people who get a little overly touchy, and gestures to the back exit to the alley.

Getting outside is a relief - Dean sucks a cold breath of air in, rubbing at his throat. ]

That was fun.

[They make it out, and while Castiel is eager to put as much distance between them and this place as possible, he realizes that he needs to give Dean a few moments to recover.

Before he'd become human he wouldn't have considered that, would have just whisked Dean away without a second thought. But now that he's had the same limits imposed on him, he's more considerate about it.]

Now what? [He glances down to the key in his hand. Is this really what's allowing the ghost to live on? There doesn't look to be any sign of physical material -- no hair or skin follicles that he can see, at least.]

It doesn't seem that destroying this would be enough. [They need to figure out who the ghost is and track down its body, but at least they have some kind of clue now.]
