[Need him not-- what? Not injured? Dean's right, of course. What use will he be now that his hand is essentially unusable? Granted, he still has the other hand, he could still wield a blade just fine, but there's no denying that it's going to make certain things more difficult.

Even simple things, like tying his shoes. Mortality is so unnecessarily difficult sometimes.

As Dean wraps up his hand, Castiel has to fight not to jerk around or hiss in pain, doing what he can to remain as still as possible. It's difficult and he's got sweat beading at his forehead by the end, but the petroleum jelly that they wrapped his palm in does seem to be helping with that unbearable heat.]

... Right. We'll figure it out. [He doesn't sound convinced, but now that his wound's been dealt with, he swallows down the pills and then finally turns back to the dragon, who's still hiding under the covers and watching them all nervously.

Castiel reaches out to set his good hand on its head over the blanket.] I'd appreciate if you didn't do that again.

[ There's some stuff that Dean would spare Castiel if he could. The whole human experience is a clusterfuck at best, a mess at worst, and Dean's not too eager to get Cas dunked in the deep end of the pool right off.

Unfortunately it isn't as if they have a choice.

Sam makes a soft noise of sympathy at the mess of Castiel's hand but Dean's face is utterly blank until it's wrapped. It's only then that he frowns and withdraws. ]

You don't gotta babytalk it. It just charbroiled your hand, man.

[ Dean turns his attention to it and unsurprisingly doesn't feel better when it cowers just a touch, curling into Castiel's good hand. ]

It didn't know what it was doing. It's only starting to realize the damage it can do.

[It's not that Castiel doesn't have an understanding of just how dangerous a dragon can be, but this one is still very young -- newly hatched, even.

Can dragons be domesticated? He has no idea. But if they put it in an environment that's nothing like Purgatory, where it doesn't have to fight for its survival, it's possible it could grow up tame.

The size it might grow to is the more pressing issue, but when Castiel realizes that he's actually considering ways in which they can keep the monster that just scorched his hand, he pulls away from it and glances back to Dean.]

... Let's focus on getting back to the bunker for now. [They can deal with the rest of this mess after that.]

[ Oh my god fskgfhsf. Dean is two seconds from throwing up his hands in frustration at the moron and his need to baby a giant, meat eating lizard.

Still, he's right - get to the bunker, avoid anyone else getting cooked and let's move. Dean huffs out a breath between clenched teeth and hops into his seat again.

The drive back is fairly quiet - Dean side-eyes the dragon in the back seat every so often but it's content to stay curled up, and every so often shifts its head out from the blankets and pokes its nose into Castiel's good hand, like a cat seeking petting.

When they get back, Dean waves Sam off to open the door and he brushes past Cas, scooping up the dragon in the bag because he's not gonna make him carry something with his bum hand. ]

Bite me and I skin you, got it?

[ It apparently does 'get it' because it curls up with a disgruntled noise and shoves its head under Dean's armpit as he walks.

As soon as he's indoors, Dean settles the bag down, staring at it and then Cas a moment. ]

...guess we oughta feed the thing.

[The whole drive back, Castiel closes his eyes and tries to manage the pain. It's much better than it was initially because of the ointment it's been wrapped in, but that doesn't mean it's not throbbing and burning.

Even then, the dragon searches for his hand and his attention, and Castiel runs his uninjured palm over the ridges of its scales.

Once they arrive, Castiel doesn't protest when Dean grabs for the dragon, as he realizes it would be a terrible idea for him to try and carry it while already hurt. He follows Dean and Sam inside, at least managing to carry one of the duffle bags with him on the way in.

As soon as the dragon's set down, it works its way out of the sack and peers at the wide, new area, sniffing its way around like it's a dog rather than some ancient creature. Castiel watches it for a few moments before nodding and turning his attention to Sam.]

Did you buy some meat?

In the trunk.

[ Sam doesn't move, though and Dean understands why the instant he looks over. Jesus. Sam could at least pretend not to be a fucking giddy little girl about this.

Dean turns for the door and goes to grab the groceries that aren't burn and medical supplies and when he comes back in he's got a bag, frowning into it. Cooked or raw, he's not really sure, but by the way its head perks up and it slithers on over to him and pushes up against his leg with a noise suspiciously like a chirp, he can guess. ]

Great. Cas, grab the thing and move it away so I can put this on a plate, okay?

[It's definitely hungry, judging from that reaction.

Castiel's somewhat apprehensive when Dean makes that request, because pulling any animal away from food can end badly. Still, he complies, stepping forward to gather the dragon up in his arms.

As expected, it snarls and does what it can to wriggle out of his grip, but the important thing is that it doesn't scratch, doesn't bite, and doesn't breathe fire.

Fighting to keep his hold on it, Castiel lets out a strained sound as he looks over at Dean.] Make it fast. [He doubts the dragon patience for this for much longer.]

[ He makes it as fast as possible, grabbing the plate, tossing the meat down and cutting it into long strips. When it's sliced, he puts it down on the ground and motions for Cas to let the dragon down.

It seems to be thinking Cas takes to look - a few thrashes and it's slipping out of his hands and thunking against the ground with its wings too small to carry it. It barely seems phased, sliding right up to the plate, digging its face in with a noise that's a cross between a purr and a growl.

Dean watches, torn between curiosity and disgust. ]

You get to teach your pet manners, Cas. [ he gives it a wide berth, circling around it. ] Here, c'mon, let's let Sam babysit. Lemme try and fix up your hand.

[The way the dragon falls out of his arms is hardly graceful, and it eats frantically, like it hasn't been around any kind of food in a few days. Maybe it will become a bit more agreeable after this.

Curious as Castiel is to get to examining the dragon more closely, the pain in his hand is ever-present, and if Dean can do something to help with that, then he has no reason to protest.]

It's not a pet. [He wants to make that clear right now. That's not the reason he brought it back here.

He trusts that Sam will be capable of watching it, and so after nodding to him Castiel moves over to Dean, extending his injured hand toward him.] Go ahead. Unless we need to move.

Yeah, we're movin'.

[ he trusts Sam to watch it, make sure it doesn't eat anything he's not supposed to.

Sighing, he leads Cas back with a jerk of his chin and a guiding hand, careful not to touch the injured one where it's burned. Instead, he leads him to the too-large bathroom with the stalls for showering, and motions him to sit down on a stool. ]

Jesus, man.

[ Dean's terribly careful as he starts unwrapping it, working the bandages open and mumbling an apology when the gauze sticks to the damaged skin. ]

Hang on- painkillers.

[ he doesn't want to give Cas these, but he's not about to let him suffer through it. They've got the heavy stuff up in the cabinet - Dean shakes out two, and passes them to Cas with a glass of water. ]

[Castiel follows after Dean, obedient for once because the pain requires it. He takes a seat on the stool, closing his eyes as Dean starts to slowly unwrap the bandaging. He ends up hissing in pain a few times when it catches on his skin, but he realizes that Dean's doing his best.

But painkillers sound like exactly what he needs, and he opens his eyes to take them, downing them with a glass of water. Thankfully, he manages it without choking on anything. Something as simple as taking a pill is much more difficult than he ever would have thought as an angel.

He peers down at his burnt skin, the exposed flesh pink and shining, and clenches his jaw.]

We might benefit from finding a way to muzzle it. [Castiel still has no idea what will ultimately happen to the dragon, but he's taking it one step at a time.]

[perkynipples]

Sorry, shit. Sorry.

[ Dean cups his hand with his own, and slowly starts working on it. He tosses the old gauze, laying out everything he needs. There's burn cream, icy-cold and he's careful to rub that in where he can, the smell awful. ]

Doubt it'll like that. It doesn't seem...dumb, exactly.

[ It ought to be able to be taught. ]

We'll get a newspaper and some squirt guns. It'll be great.

[ Dean finishes wrapping it, and casts a wry smile at him. ]

How're you holdin' up, man. We ought to get you sitting down, those pills are gonna hit like a truck.

[Castiel shakes his head as Dean apologizes. He has no reason to, when he's doing the best he can. The cream is already giving him some relief, and his muscles and overall posture loosen up as a result.]

I don't see how a newspaper would be of any help. [The dragon would just burn that to ash. A squirt gun might actually be of use, though.

The strange thing is that Dean's so willing to discuss the possibility of the dragon being here for at least a few days, now. Possibly because the worst has already happened and they might as well find a way to make this work.

Once Dean finishes with the bandaging, Castiel looks down at his hand and nods.] I'll be fine. [Though he's well aware of how much of an effect painkillers can have, and so he nods.] I'll lay on the couch. [That way he'll be able to keep an eye on the dragon, even if he will be in something of a haze.]

[perkynipples]

You smack it on the nose.

[ Dean gives him a little smile, and finishes the wrapping up. Once it's done, he washes his hands clean of the gunk clinging to it from the burn goo, and dries them off on the towel. ]

Probably a good idea. Crash for a few hours. Sam and I will watch the dragon.

[ Dean tidies up and then starts off to the living room where Sam's looking like a kid with his first pet, all bright eyed and grinning as the dragon gulps down the last bit of meat with a toss of its head and shakes out its wings. ]

This is temporary.

Sam-

[ SORRY BUDDY he's not listening because he's got a lapful of sleepy, fed dragon crawling up and flopping there. ]

[Castiel made no mention of crashing, although he realizes that he might have no choice depending on how strong the pills are. He hates it, that one small injury can knock him off his feet like this.

The solution would be to not get wounded in the first place, but that's surprisingly difficult when you're a fragile human.

He follows after Dean and plants himself on the couch, though the moment that the dragon finishes with eating and spots him, it bounds over despite the bickering going on between Dean and Sam.

Castiel's eyebrows raise up his forehead as the dragon squats down at the bottom of the couch and stares up at him. It has the intelligence needed to recognize him as the one who saved it. Interesting.

He reaches down to place a hand on its head again, sighing to himself.] Your mouth is covered in blood.

[perkynipples]

[ The dragon abandons Sam's lap for the significantly better one of Castiel, and chirps up at him like some kind of bird, almost. Dean looks less impressed, especially when Sam takes the other spot and leaves Dean with the spot by Cas' head.

Grudgingly, he goes to settle in, only to groan as he gets back up and fetches a washcloth.

He hands that to Cas, sprawling out on half of the couch, giving the little dragon the stink eye. ]

He'd make a really interesting jacket. Guess he's not big enough for that, though. Boots, ma-

Dean.

[freewill]

[While Castiel takes the wash cloth from Dean, he does it with a glare.] Yes, you've made your point that you think we should kill it as soon as we get the chance. Thank you. [Dean, why did you ever teach him sarcasm?

He peers down at the dragon, though, leaning forward to start wiping all the blood off of its snout. Not much can be done about the meat caught between its fangs, but Castiel imagines that'll sort itself out eventually.

When he's done, he sets the cloth down and leans back, but the dragon almost instantly jumps up to settle on top of him. Letting out a small "oomph," Castiel has to jerk his head back to avoid being smacked right in the face by one of those wings.

Plus its claws are digging into his abdomen.] If you're going to do that, you need to lay down.

[He keeps talking to it. Castiel realizes that's probably a bad sign, but there's no harm in checking to see if it can understand human speech.]

Whoa, princess, get your panties outta their wad, okay.

[ Except he's totally not upset, he's actually kind of delighted, because Cas' sarcasm is sometimes absolutely excellent. Dean frowns down at the little monster and purses his lip a moment, considering. It's pretty enough, he supposes - all shiny scales and thin wings that don't look like it'd carry it, but it's still young.

They're still not keeping the goddamn thing but it's not totally horrific.

He kicks his legs up on the coffee table and tosses the remote to Sam while the two of them watch the dragon circle three times like a dog, and then settle into Castiel's chest, tucking its snout right up under his jaw. ]

...I hope it doesn't think you're its mom.

There's nothing wrong with my underwear. [They could go back and forth like this for a while if Sam doesn't stop them.

Still, Castiel can see Sam glaring out of the corner of his eye, and he's willing to let it go if Dean is. He's not in a state to figure out what exactly to do with the dragon right now, though he realizes he shouldn't even allow himself to get this attached.

But it's gotten comfortable on top of him, and he doesn't have it in him to shove it off. So long as it isn't breathing fire or trying to gnaw or scratch at anything. It's been surprisingly docile so far, but that could easily change as it gets older.

At Dean's comment, Castiel scoffs.] I doubt that. [He doesn't exactly look like a full-grown dragon, after all.] But seeing how it doesn't have one, and seeing how we've proved that we're capable of feeding it, I'm not surprised that it's reacted this way.

[Which doesn't really answer the question of what they're going to do with it, but Castiel can worry about that when he isn't so spacey from the pills and when his hand isn't hurting quite so much.]

Uh-huh.

[ Thankfully Dean doesn't seem inclined to try and bicker anymore. He's too comfortable on the couch after what's been a mess of a day and doesn't seem inclined to get up. Sam does him one better, heading to the fridge to grab three beers, returning only for Dean to snipe Cas' before he can have it.

He levels a finger at him, all good humor gone. ]

Only water for you.

[ Dean's not unaware of the date - of the situation, of Cas' humanity. He's not letting 2014 happen, not letting Cas slip that far down. The dragon makes a disgruntled noise at Dean's irritation and promptly stretches out to take up as much room on Castiel as is possible. ]

How's the hand holdin' up?

[Castiel doesn't have the love affair with beer that Dean does, so he doesn't particularly mind. He's been told that pills and alcohol are a bad mix, and he has no intention of doing any further damage to his body.

The dragon is getting nice and comfortable and while the weight is enough to make breathing slightly more difficult, they've managed to make it work.

He takes a sip of the water and then sets it down on the floor so it's easily accessible, letting out a sigh. If Dean's going to ask about his hand every twenty minutes, Castiel's going to get annoyed very quickly.]

It's fine. The medicine is helping. If we can teach it to not do that again, then we should be set to study it by tomorrow.

[Sam is going to have to do a lot of the hands-on stuff for obvious reasons, but Castiel still wants to be a part of it.]

[ A horrible mix, unless you're Dean, in which case mixing alcohol and pills means it's Tuesday. ]

Yeah, you and Sammy can nerd out over the him.

[ He's not going to get involved because they're not keeping it. It's temporary. The look that Sam gives him says everything, honestly - Sam knows exactly what he's thinking and from the little smile on his lips Sam's doubting it's actually temporary.

Dean narrows his eyes at him, and turns to the TV instead, finding that less infuriating than little brothers and angels and dragons.



Time passes and Dean finds that they don't, in fact, get rid of the dragon. The damn thing has a habit of crawling up onto the counters when he's cooking, trying to snipe bits of food and then half-flying, half-wobbling away as it gets used to its wings and Dean chases it off.

It's like having a huge catlike dog, he thinks, and much as he wants to say he hates the damn thing, he finds himself sort of freakishly attached. Charlie declares it awesome and ends up staying a few more days with it, Kevin seems attached and Dean - well.

The first day he finds it curled up on top of his bed when he wants to take a nap, he shuts up and deals with it and finds the dragon curled up at the small of his back when he wakes up. It seems to be too dumb to realize that he's totally not the one who likes it, and the scraps he feeds it from the table are for convenience, not because he's being nice, nope.

He takes to calling it Boots, too, mostly starting as a joke and a threat and then finds it sticking, not that he ever admits it to anyone else.

Dean's elbow deep in the guts of the Impala while Cas and Sam are out, and the dragon keeps getting into things, knocking over tools and playing with things and finally Dean picks it up and deposits it next to him, pointing a greasy finger at it. Don't think I won't make you into boots, he says, and the dragon snorts like it understands and totally doesn't believe him. It's how he winds up fiddling with the car's engine with the dragon curled around his shoulders somehow, so it can watch exactly what he's doing.

He would've thought it was more heavy, but it makes sense - it's got birdlike bones, all hollow and light which means it curls over his shoulder and isn't too obtrusive. ]

Make yourself useful, Boots.

[ Dean glances back at it with a frown, holding up one of the tools and watching it latch onto it to start playing with it, keeping it easily accessible while he works a screw loose. ]

[Sam and Castiel do perform a full examination, at least as much as they can manage with the tools available to them, and they determine that the dragon is in fact male. They study its bone structure, particularly the ones in the wings. They study how it's capable of breathing fire, and slowly but surely, they manage to train it too.

Which doesn't mean that the dragon always behaves himself. That's hardly the case, and there are plenty of times when even Castiel has been pushed to the edge of patience and threatened to throw it out of the bunker entirely.

But the fact is, he has a soft spot for the little thing. While Dean calls him Boots, Castiel usually calls him by an Enochian name which roughly translates to Tiny Wings. Sam's taken to the name Boots, if only to not confuse the dragon even further by giving it three different names.

While they're required to keep him inside, there's at least enough space for the dragon to stretch its legs and its wings. When it chooses to fly it usually ends in some kind of mess, but not that much damage has been done. And since that first time, there have only been a few fire-breathing incidents, and none of them have ended in injury.

The important thing is that they've managed to assert dominance over him, which means that most of the time, if Castiel raises his voice it's effective in stopping Boots from misbehaving.

As Castiel and Sam return from doing a supply run on a particular day, Castiel finds Dean and Boots out in the garage, and Boots is playing with one of Dean's wrenches. As soon as Boots catches sight of him, he tosses the wrench aside and bounds over.

Sometimes he really seems more like a dog than a dragon. Castiel peers down fondly.]

I'm going to need to put these things down before I can play. [Boots is too big to be easily carried anymore, but despite the fact that he's more or less a large lizard, he enjoys being pet.]

[ If anyone ever asks, he'll totally deny that he kinda likes the little guy. As far as he's concerned, it doesn't matter how long it's been, it's just temporary. They can't keep a friggin' dragon (except for the fact that they totally are.)

They keep it, though, and soon enough Dean gives up the threats of getting rid of it, and sticks with the tried and true ones about skinning him.

As much as the dragon likes him, it's clear that Cas is the one he likes the most. Boots will abandon almost anything he's doing when the ex-angel comes in and this time is no different. ]

Dude, he was getting into everything.

[ Dean glances back, wrapping up the work on the car, wiping his hands off as he comes over to help Cas with the groceries. ]

Think he's getting all cabin-fever being locked up in here. He tried to drink motor oil.

Motor oil?

[Even for a dragon, that's bound to be unhealthy and possibly even fatal. Boots has been happy enough with the meat they've been giving him, though sometimes they mix in some potatoes or other greens. They've managed to determine that dragons are omnivores, interestingly enough.

Castiel makes a small motion with his hand that indicates Boots should stay put, and then heads through the garage so that they can set everything down in the kitchen inside. Boots, despite being a little terror at times, is actually rather intelligent when he wants to be.

Castiel glances from Dean to Sam as he starts to put everything away.]

... We should take him out to a place where he has space to move around, but I'm not sure where would be safe. [A large open field? A canyon? But wherever they go, there's the threat of being seen.]
