(CONTENT WARNING. This is a meme about death and may deal with suicide, depression, extreme violence, illnesses, etc.)

This is it. The final curtain. You're at the end of your life, and there's someone here you really, really need to say something to before you die.


CAUSE OF DEATH

1 - Accidental. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it doesn't matter now. Due to negligence, arrogance or just plain bad luck, you've become gravely ill or injured and are now in your last moments. This covers all kinds of accidental deaths--strangulation, drowning, car accidents, unintentional beheadings, whatever you can think of.

2 - Murder. Somebody really didn't like you. Enough to kill you, it seems. You're now dead by someone else's hand. (Maybe even the person replying to you?) As with accidental death, this covers all types of intentional, malicious murder, regardless of method--so poisoning, stabbing, shooting, etc., all work here. Same with all the below options: any possible variation you can think of on it will work!

3 - Suicide. There is no hope for you, and no way out. You've reached the absolute bottom pits of despair, and the only recourse you have is to take your own life. Someone shows up to stop you... but they're too late to help you now.

4 - Terminal illness. You have cancer, or tuberculosis, or cholera back when people got cholera. The doctors have done everything they could and it wasn't enough. The only thing to do now is give your loved ones the bad news.

5 - Starvation. So thirsty. So hungry. Maybe you've been traveling in the desert for hours, or maybe you're just really poor. Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter, because you're slowly wasting away until you're nothing but skin and bones.

6 - Death in battle. You've died a hero's death, and gone out in a blaze of glory. Or maybe you were a coward who got shot for deserting? Either way, you're now a casualty of war. Will you be honored with a parade or scorned as a traitor to your country?

7 - Natural causes. You've lived a long, happy life, and now your story is at an end. In a warm bed, surrounded by your family and friends, you peacefully drift off. Just make sure that you've made a will somewhere, or at least use your deathbed to set the record straight. Otherwise, who knows what kind of squabbles might errupt after you leave this world?

TIME LEFT

1 - A few minutes. You're fading fast and you don't have much, well, any time left. Better tell the person with you that you love -- or despise -- them with your last breath, because you'll never have the chance otherwise.

2 - A few hours. You haven't got much time left. Is there someone you still need to kill? To kiss? Better do it quick. (Note: last kisses not recommended for people dying of highly contagious illnesses.)

3 - A few days. The doctors have given you the news, and it's not very good. You've only got a couple days left to live. You should start trying to make peace with people and saying your final goodbyes with the days you have left.

4 - A few weeks. Take that vacation you've always wanted to go on but never had the chance to. Go do that thing you've never thought you'd be any good at. You've got only weeks left to live. Don't waste them.

5 - A few months. While you aren't quite on death's doorstep yet, your lifespan has still dwindled considerably from what you probably thought it would be. How are you going to spend your last few months on Earth? Making the world a better place and telling your family you love them? Or raising as much hell as possible?

RELATIONSHIP

1 - Lovers. This is your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, mistress, whatever you call them they were the person you wanted to spend your life with. Too bad you don't have much of a life to spend with them anymore.

2 - Siblings. Your beloved little or older sibling is just standing there, watching you slowly waste away before their eyes. Can you say anything to comfort them? Note that it doesn't necessarily have to be interpreted literally; adopted siblings and friends so close they might as well be siblings work too.

3 - Parent and child. Nothing is worse than a parent having to bury their child... except, maybe, a young child now alone in the world after losing their parent. As with the sibling prompt, this can be expanded to include parental figures and people who are LIKE a father/mother to you as well as actual biological parents.

4 - Co-workers, teammates or classmates. You were fighting for the same side. Or you worked together in the same office for years. Or they sat behind you in biology all semester. However you met, how do your react when you find out someone who used to be a fixture in your life is going to die?

5 - Friends. You're the best of friends! You go everywhere together, know all each other's secrets, and are never seen apart. At least, you didn't use to be. Now one of you is dying and the other one is left alone in the world. Or maybe you're dying together. Wait, is that better or worse?

6 - Bitter enemies. You hate, hate, HATE this person. In fact, maybe you killed them. Or they killed you. Or maybe nobody killed anybody and they're just bitter that Mother Nature got to you before they did. Regardless, they want to confront you one last time before you bite it, if only to rub your nose in your imminent demise and their ability to outlive you.

[ It was just a gentle reminder, but in comparison, Loki lived forever from a human perspective. ]

Don't remind me. I'm well aware how you look compared to my few thousand years.

[ But even still he isn't immortal. ]

I don't think you'll like me in any other universe. [ A half laugh. ] You'll probably think I'm crazy considering I will probably remember and you won't.

[ Yu smiled gently at that, reaching to grasp his hand. ]

I know you'd find a way to convince me. You're you, after all, and how could any version of me not fall in love with you?

[chaostic]

Oh, shut up. Don't be cheesy.

[ Doesn't change the fact that he smiles anyway. ]

Who knows what the universe has to offer. You might be with someone else in a different timeline. I'm not really a home wrecker.

[ That was probably the worse joke he has ever made. He did try to destroy an entire realm and a planet....and probably a few other things. ]

[ Yu let out a raspy sounding laugh. ]

How many things have you wrecked in the past fifty years?

[chaostic]

[ Now that? He can deal with. Hearing Yu laugh, no matter how weak, he wanted to remember those times and not him wasting away. ]

A few dozen. . .maybe. [ Loki plays at being coy. ] Who's counting?

[ Yu chuckled softly again, closing his eyes and letting out a small breath. ]

Well, either way... you make me happy, so I want you to be happy too. No matter how long you live, I just want you to be happy.

[chaostic]

[ He didn't know if he could ever explain that a few decades of happiness, no matter how fleeting they might seem later on his life, were better than hundreds of years of feeling isolated in Asgard. ]

I am. Don't worry about me. [ He leaned down to kiss Yu despite his age, despite his deteriorating condition. It didn't matter to Loki. He already knew this would come. It's just a matter of getting through it. ] Pyres are traditional for me.

[ He mentioned sounding somewhat solemn. ]

Would you rather be buried?

[ That got another soft chuckle out of Yu. ]

After everything that's happened, going out in a blaze of glory sounds wonderful.

[ He forced his eyes open again (that was getting hard to do...), gazing out at the sky. He could see the faintest glimmers of light on the horizon, and he let out a breath. At least he got to see that one last time; such a beautiful sunrise... ]

[chaostic]

I'm not surprised you want the most dramatic thing possible.

[ He whispers softly. Something tells him he shouldn't prod much longer. Maybe that's it. All they get is one more sunrise and it's over. Like everything else. Life isn't so kind as to lend him a partner that might match his lifespan. Why would it? That's stupid. More than he deserves for all he has done and yet he craves as much knowing he'll have to set up Yu's pyre, find tokens from his life, and finally set the fire.

He might be used to death but he is not used to the grieving process. ]

Are you still awake? [ He asks this after about five minutes of silence knowing he means to ask 'are you still alive'. ]

[ Yu let out a soft sigh, watching the sun slowly rise. It really was pretty, though... it was a shame it was starting to get a little blurry, but that was okay at this point, wasn't it? He'd lived a long life, and if they were lucky, another him would get to live a longer life and be happier longer. He was sure that given more time, him and Loki would be able to figure something out. ]

[ It made him smile, that knowledge that Loki wouldn't give up if he had a second chance. Because he knew Loki, he knew how stubborn he was. Everything would be okay... even if it was another him that got to enjoy it. ]

[ A soft sigh escaped from him as he closed his eyes happily... and he didn't get to hear Loki ask his question. ]

[ It isn't the sunrise that draws his attention just the profound stillness at his side that makes his heart sink into the pit of his stomach. He was a warrior. Men died in battle every battle and here he is mourning the death of one mortal. Some inconsequential being he ought not have been interested in but caught his attention anyway. It's a few more minutes before he even gets up the strength to move. Loki hadn't even realized he was crying until he had to hoist up Yu's body and take it somewhere to be burned.

He is better than this, right? He shouldn't have to mourn something so simple yet he feels another piece of him fall away the same way he couldn't console the rage in his heart after Frigga died and he couldn't even attend her pyre. This time, he was there. He took the care to find the items necessary, but he didn't stay until the last embers were gone. He didn't have the capacity to entertain his sentimentality any longer than that.

That's it. They're done. There is nothing else and there will be nothing else between them. He was a few thousand years old now and he should know how to let go of someone when they're gone but that doesn't stop it from hurting. Each and every single day for quite a while he will wake up wondering why there isn't anyone there next to him. After all, he has had to bury two lovers in Eros, even if he wished he hadn't. ]

[ Days went by; Weeks, months. Business went as usual everywhere else, but there was, of course, that one thing missing that made it all different at the same time. ]

[ It wasn't until three months later that a knock came on the door of Loki's manor, the sound hesitant, almost like the owner wasn't sure if they should be knocking or not. ]

[chaostic]

[ Loki answered the door despite the rather timid knock. He had his hair tied back into a ponytail, a few loose strands framing his face. In the background there seemed to be boxed he was contemplating what to do with. He didn't want to just toss Fayt and Yu's things away but decided on finding somewhere to put them up as storage. He wasn't quite ready to wipe out every inch of their existence even if it meant he might have some peace of mind. ]

What is it? I'm not expecting any house calls for my business or the Maeve.

[ There was a familiar awkward noise, and an equally familiar pair of grey eyes staring up at him, belonging to someone clearly not used to looking up at people. He took a step back, his eyes on Loki the entire time, youthful face it's usual neutrality, but the expression was always in his eyes anyway. After a moment, he realized how rude he was being, and dipped forward in an apologetic bow. ]

I'm sorry to disturb you. I just arrived, and the women that brought me here said I should come here right away.

[ Yu Narukami pulled himself back up, a questioning look in his eyes that time, as if quietly asking Loki why the Maeve would do that. ]

[chaostic]

[ Had this been the Yu who had grown to know him he might have recognized the sheer panic in Loki's eyes. The full emotion doesn't quite reach his face. He manages to stay neutral even if it took him a little too long to answer the question. No, instead he was staring like an idiot. ]

You. . .

[ He simultaneous hated Lucille and cherished her for this but-- ]

You have belongings here you will probably want.

[ His voice wavered a little but he had to take a second to step to the side and motion that Yu could come in. Maybe he shouldn't have invited him in. He isn't thinking about the pictures that could be anywhere or the touches of decoration that are so distinctively Yu and Fayt's style. ]

Including a cat.

[ ...he had things here? That was the last thing he expected to hear, but more importantly... ]

A cat?

[ Because that was clearly the most important thing to be concerned with. Yu clearly didn't changed much between his different selves. ]

[chaostic]

[ Surprisingly, the same cat Yu had a while ago but Fenrir appears youthful and healthy still. After all, these were cats Gloria unleashed on the house and they all have extended lifetimes to make the witch's taste. Fenrir seems far too excited to see Yu and instantly pads over and rubs up against him.

Loki decides to ignore this little fact for now. He isn't so receptive when he finally plucked up the resolve to pack things away. ]

He's yours. His name is Fenrir. [ He cards a hand through his hair, only marginally frustrated because he just don't know what to say. ]

You can take him if you like.

[ ...oh. ]

[ ...oh that wasn't fair. He was so plush and soft and grey and he had such lovely eyes and--! Yu couldn't resist; he crouched down and gently started petting the adorable little ball of grey floof. He was so cute, he couldn't help but talk to him instead of Loki for a moment. ]

Hi there, Fenrir. You're so cute, aren't you?

[ A loud, pleased purr came from him as Yu lightly stroked his fingers along his head. Oh gosh he was so cute! ]

[ Priorities started shuffling themselves in the right order in his head, and he finally looked back up at Loki, a curious expression on his face. ]

How is he mine?

[chaostic]

[ He didn't mind Yu temporarily paying attention to the cat. It gave Loki a moment to cast a simple illusion over the boxes he had been moving. Best not to let on they're labelled Yu's things when he...well this version of him has been here before at all.

The question provokes a mischievous smirk. ]

Magic. [ Maybe not an outright lie, if only a little vague. ] He likes you anyway. Always has.

[ ...Skipping right over that. ]

I gather you might also want the Compendium? [ And to further pad that: ] The Maeve bring people's belongings over with them, sometimes.

[ It feels weird lying to him when he wouldn't normally. ]

[ Mention of the Compendium really got Yu's attention. He barely paid attention as Fenrir tried to worm his way up onto him, absently wrapping his arms around the happy ball of fluff as he stood up. ]

H-how... how do you know about the Compendium?

[ That was an important part of his powers; it was weird that someone not from the Velvet Room know about it... unless he was, and they just had never met? He didn't look like someone Igor would employ though... ]

...who are you?

[chaostic]

You're not the first person to come here from your world.

[ He did meet Souji at one point. Then Adachi, briefly, and whoever that girl was who didn't seem to like him much at all.

He had to laugh and it's a strange sound considering how he feels about having to provide his name again to someone he married. ]

You can call me Loki. I assume you're Yu Narukami?

[ A part of him hoped it was Souji but that felt like more of a slap in the face on Lucille's part. ]

You look like how they described. [ One lie after the other. He makes it looks easy. ] You have a sword too, if you want it.

[ He bought it as a joke years back not realizing the irony of it. ]

Mmhmm...

[ Yu nodded as he said his name, looking at him in confusion. This was Loki? The real Loki? But he... ]

...you're taller than I thought you'd be. And less blue.

[ Because what was even more of a gut punch than that? ]
