"Luckily, I'm a good hunter," Merrick said, nibbling while he did. "And I do use all the parts of what I hunt."

"Can you teach me?" RJ asked, looking down at his rabbit. He usually wasn't this reluctant to ask for help, but this was still just so odd and overwhelming. "How to hunt and how to control it?"

[lunarwolf]

"Seeing that you're dangerous to yourself and others unless I do?" Merrick chuckled. "Yes, I'll teach you, but you might have to move in for a while."

RJ didn't see what was so funny but he did look up gratefully. "Thank you, though I really don't mean to impose."

[lunarwolf]

"I'm... not too surprised. The wind told me something would be coming. Some sort of change." And if all he needed to do was teach someone to hunt and to control themselves at the height of the moon-- well, he could do that.

"The wind told you I was coming?" That earned him a skeptical look. It sounded like there was more to this werewolf thing then he thought.

[lunarwolf]

"It's very old magic," Merrick answered. "Very old. I don't know if it's something I can teach or not. But hunting... That, I can teach."

[spiritofthewolf]

"Magic." He said, a little in disbelief. They'd dealt with spirits at Pai Zhou but never anything like this. "The hunting I'd be grateful for. At least I'd be able to feed myself then."

"It's a little more important to teach you control, though." Very important, really, given the predicted moon phase.

He sighed as he took another bite of rabbit. "You can really control it?" He asked, still not quite believing it. He'd only changed once and he'd never felt more out of control in his life.

[lunarwolf]

"Of course." He took a bite of the roast meat, applauding his own cooking, even if it was unseasoned. "But it does take patience and practice."

[spiritofthewolf]

"Those I have a lot of, thankfully." If anything Pai Zhou had taught him, it was patience and practice. "But can you practice without the moon being, you know, full?"

[lunarwolf]

He nodded. "You have to. Because what you need is an absolute sense of self."

[spiritofthewolf]

"Sense of self. Right." RJ thought he'd had that before. He'd tried, but with his father always looking over his shoulder, not doing things the way he wanted...he wasn't so sure.

[lunarwolf]

He smiled. It always seemed to be the kind of advice that nobody took seriously, but when your body changed around you, sometimes with nearly unbearable pain, it was important that your mind stay yours instead of following the pain and the instinct. "If you know your own mind and your own soul, then you can see that it's your mind in the wolf's body, not a beast's."

No, it did make sense, RJ just realized he was going to be redefining 'self' quite a bit in order to achieve it. "That makes a lot of sense, yet I know it's not that easy." He suddenly wasn't hungry anymore and set aside the rest of his meal.

[lunarwolf]

"It does take time." The setting aside-- Well. It wasn't too surprising. It was a serious topic. "But we can get you partly there tonight. Enough that you won't be completely feral."

[spiritofthewolf]

"Please." He hated sounding desperate but he did not want to hurt anyone. Anything Merrick could do to help him would be more then appreciated. "I'll do anything you say."

[lunarwolf]

"Do you have a... a touchstone? Or an amulet?" he asked, thinking while finishing off his rabbit. The others, he propped on a forked stick that was near but not in the fire.

RJ paused...then pulled out the thin white crystal on one of the thongs around his throat from his shirt. His best friend, Dominic, had given it to him before he'd fled. Dom had been one of the few people who hadn't been afraid of him after everything.

If anyone could remind him of his humanity, it was Dom. "Yes...or at least, I think it will work."

He nodded to see it, standing to come closer. "As long as it matters to you, it should work. What matters is that it's something you can attach memories to. Something that you can look at or touch and remind yourself of your history, even when the change hurts the most."

[spiritofthewolf]

"If anyone can keep me human, it's memories of Dom." He voiced his thoughts from earlier with a soft smile. Maybe one day, if he got control of his monster, he'd be able to thank Dominic for this.

He sighed and looked up at Merrick. "So it sounds like the trick is remembering the fact you are human." At least that seemed to be the gist of everything he'd said so far.

"We aren't human," Merrick countered, "but what we are is in control. We don't have to follow all of our instincts. That's what we have to remember. Control. Just like we control our tempers."

When Merrick said they weren't human, RJ winced. He didn't like the sound of that.

"That's honestly something I never thought I'd have to work on." He hardly ever got angry and was very even keel temperament wise. That was most likely why this whole experience was throwing him so much: He didn't know what to do with all the excise emotions the change caused. "Control...okay."

Reaching out, Merrick took one of RJ's hands and guided it toward his necklace. "Wrap your fingers around this," he said, "close your eyes, and remember. Remember all of the good things. Everything that you would miss if you hadn't been yourself enough to go through them. Friendships. Family. The days you spent with people who love you, who you love. You are still that person. You just have another facet now."
