Merrick enjoying his food had always been a weak spot for RJ. He really needed to stop making things like this but he couldn't help it. He liked having someone to cook for who genuinely liked everything he made. "There is a reason it's called comfort food." He laughed lightly as he started eating.

"I wish I could show you some of the things I used to eat, but they don't really exist anymore," he said, sighing. "And I've never been a great cook, anyway. I just know how to make the most basic stuff -- though Willie has taught me a few things." A few. But nothing like this, which Merrick was eating heartily.

RJ was going to regret this but.. "I could teach you, if you want. Then, maybe we could recreate some of the things you used to eat. It may not be exact but we can try." It would be fun and it could be a way to give back to Merrick for everything he'd done for him.

"We'll see." Giving RJ a smile, he popped a bit of strawberry into his mouth. "I kind of like having people cook for me, though. It definitely tastes better."

"Oh I see how it is!" RJ teased with a laugh around a bite full of pancakes. "You want people to wait on you."

A grin spread across his face. "Well, when you're so good at it..."

"Flattery will get you no where." RJ said, punctuated by a strawberry on his fork. "Or is it everywhere? I can never remember and the expression works either way in different context."

It got him a laugh and a nudge against his shoulder. "See, that's why you're so good at it."

"I'm good at cooking because you flatter me? Think very highly of yourself, don't you." RJ nudged back then settled into really eat.

"Everybody's good at something. I'm good at manual labor, you're good at cooking." He was still smiling as he followed RJ's example, though, and really dug into his pancakes. The compote was wonderful, and the pancakes were perfect. He really couldn't get much better than this.

"You are good at things besides manual labor." RJ replied when he stopped eating to take a break from some tea. That didn't seem like a fair comparison.

Merrick shrugged. "I was simplifying. You're good at more than cooking, too, RJ."

"I know. It's just...manual labor doesn't seem...skilled enough to be something one is good at. You just...do it." He knew he was messing this up and he was likely just offending Merrick at this point.

"Trust me - it's completely possible to be bad at manual labor," he shrugged. "I've seen it."

"You're right. I'm sorry. That...that came out wrong." He looked down at his pancakes to hide his embarrassed blush. Way to go, dumbass.

But Merrick shook his head. "Nah, it's all right. I wasn't making a serious statement or anything."

RJ shrugged and concentrated on eating, to the point he was soon finished. He drank his tea as he waited for Merrick. "I'll clean up." He insisted softly.

"Thanks..." But he was confused as he let RJ take his plate, his pancakes gone. Something had happened and he wasn't quite sure what.

He'd offended him and even if Merrick didn't think so, RJ still felt the embarrassment of it. He needed the excuse of cleaning up to get away to clear his head. He'd be useless for their mission otherwise. "I'm going to finish my prep for tonight. Come join me when you are ready to start planning." Then he was gone, disappeared into the safety of the kitchen with the remains of breakfast.

"RJ--" Merrick stood before he got all the way away. "Is something wrong?" He'd never know what was going on if he didn't ask.

Merrick's voice stopped him, but RJ didn't turn around. Didn't want him to see the panic on his face. "I...I guess I'm just nervous still about tonight. I just need some time to think." It was the best excuse he could come up with.

He frowned a little but nodded, still concerned. "All right," he said. "If you need anything, let me know."

But he was sure that RJ wasn't going to let him know anything. For some reason, he was on edge around him. So Merrick decided just to let him go, unwind himself, and tend to his own work.

Once he was safe in the kitchen, RJ dumped the dishes in the sink and concentrated on taking deep breaths. He wished he could just always be relaxed and enjoy his time with Merrick, instead of fumbling with his words and looking like an idiot. Not that he thought he ever had a chance with the older wolf but he still at least wanted to have some mutual respect between them.

Finally calming himself down, he washed the dishes and set out to get everything ready for Willie tonight, for at least the normal menu. He'd help Willie with the special when he arrived.

When Willie came in, he set in to working with RJ for the special while Merrick finished up his work for the day before going upstairs to check their camos for the night. They smelled less like mothballs, which was a huge help - it'd mean they smelled less conspicuous. He knew better than to think they'd escape the rogue's nose, if there was a rogue, but even a human would smell those naphtha balls.

With Willie's help, soon everything was as ready for dinner as it would ever be. Thankfully, it had been a quiet lunch service so they hadn't been to distracted by too many diners.

In the early afternoon, Willie sent RJ upstairs with a tray of sandwiches, fruit and chips for him and Merrick so they could strategize and get ready to go. Balancing the tray on one hand, RJ carefully knocked on Merrick's door.
