"Groundhog." A pest animal, more often than not. Safe to track and hunt.

He scrunched his nose and made sure to remember that smell. Groundhogs could be a problem for the garden and he thought he'd spotted one near the Roadhouse. If he could smell them, he could chase them off. "How would I use this sent to find one?"

"First, notice which way the wind is blowing - look at the grasses and the leaves. Then you'll know which way the wind is blowing the scent. Then follow it, watch where it gets stronger. Be careful of how you step - but you're already good at moving silently."

The compliment was met with an amused smile before RJ went back to concentrating. He relaxed and concentrated first on the wind, then the scent again. He started moving in one direction...paused...then adjusted.

Merrick stood back to watch, letting RJ track his first creature. It was a lesson most Wolves learned early - but for RJ, this was early. He'd been a Wolf for just a few months, had had a teacher for less than that. Basically, he was right on schedule.

The scent was growing stronger. The only question was if they would find the beast or the nest.

It took some trial and error but eventually, RJ felt like he was on the right track. To the point he almost tripped over the ground hog he was tracking. As it went running off, RJ was too please to care and turned to give Merrick a happy smile. "Oops?"

Merrick laughed softly. "Good job, though - you found it. Do you think you're ready to try to find me by scent alone?"

"I guess I can try?" RJ said with a shrug before glancing around. "Do you want me to just close my eyes or...?"

"Close your eyes," he agreed, "and sit still for ten minutes. Look at your watch before I go, and when you don't hear my footsteps anymore, you can look again and start counting. If you haven't found me in half an hour, I'll find you." He rested his hand on RJ's shoulder. "Ready?"

Taking a deep breath, RJ sank down into a cross legged position and closed his eyes. "Ready as I'll ever be."

"Ten minutes," he said, and then, with footsteps well practiced to the forest, Merrick went. Now and then, he leapt up to take hold of low tree branches to confuse his trail further - but eventually, he seated himself not far from a small stream, even removing his boots to let his feet dangle in the water.

"Ten Minutes." RJ said to himself as he settled into a meditative pose. He tried to follow where Merrick was going but eventually, he got to far away and RJ wouldn't put it past Merrick to change directions once he was far off.

Once the ten minutes were up, RJ stood up and started out in the direction he last smelled Merrick. When he was far as he could go, he closed his eyes to search for the scent and feel the wind.

After some trial and error, it took him about half an hour before he was sure on his path. He took to the trees, in an attempt to sneak up on Merrick for the fun of it.

When Merrick had judged half an hour had passed, he stood, dried his feet, and pulled his boots back on. He'd told RJ he'd find him if that much time had passed - so that was where he went. Back into the woods, walking with quiet footsteps, letting his nose guide. Scents were more obvious in wolf form, but he still knew how RJ smelled as he was.

RJ hadn't quite caught up yet so he saw Merrick coming towards him. He paused in his current position on a branch, crouching by the tree trunk. Waiting until the older wolf had walked underneath him, he dropped down and tapped his shoulder with a happy grin. "Hi."

The scent had been strong, so he had a bit of warning before RJ tapped his shoulder, but he still gave his fellow Wolf a grin. "Not bad," he said, reaching up to ruffle RJ's hair. "It took you a little while, but not bad at all."

"You totally knew I was there didn't you?" RJ said with an amused chuckle, ducking his head to hide the blush the hand in his hair caused. "You'll have to teach me how to mask my scent next."

"It takes more effort to hide a scent than it's worth - at least, once you start smelling everything," Merrick smiled. "I know the scent of the roadhouse, and of Willie. And of you. A little bit of garlic always stays with you after one of your pizza nights - almost three days, even when you shower."

"That's not embarrassing at all." RJ said, not even trying to hide the bright red he was now. Though it did secretly please him that Merrick knew his scent so well. "So,if it's so hard to mask a scent, how are we going to sneak up on this rogue tonight?"

"We'll hope to get there while he's the only one there - and then it won't matter. If we can get him and bring him out, then we'll have three of us against the hunters." He hoped, anyway - if they could get the rogue on their side.

"If we watch them, we can see when they go get something to eat. The way they were drinking last night, they will probably be looking for a place to drink again tonight. Last hurrah before going to work tomorrow night during the moon." RJ had no idea if this was a good idea or not but he was just saying his thoughts. Merrick probably already had a plan in place that would be much more affective.

He nodded. "That's basically what I was planning. It would give us time to bring the rogue over to our side - but the question of the hunters still remains."

The last thing he wanted to do was to have to kill to protect himself. Especially when humans and wolves used to work alongside each other. "After we get the rogue on our side, it'll be up to you to get him out and back to the clearing behind the roadhouse. I'll rejoin you when I can."

"Even if we don't get him to our side, as long as we can render him unconscious, we can get him back to the roadhouse. Getting him away from the hunters should be the first priority."

He chewed his lip for a moment before he voiced the protest running through his mind. "I don't like the idea of you facing them alone."

"I'd rather face them alone than leave a rogue to the world alone without any sort of influence to bring him his mind back," Merrick answered quietly, looking sincerely to RJ's eyes. "Trust me. Please."

With his lip still gripped between his teeth, RJ's eyes were wide with concern and fear. There was so much more he wanted to say, like how RJ still needed Merrick's influence. But he couldn't refuse that quiet sincerity.

He took a deep breath and let it out with a sigh. "Alright."

"It'll be okay," he assured quietly. "A Wolf can beat a human any day if they know what they're doing - and I know what I'm doing." Merrick reached out to squeeze his shoulder. "I trust you - that you can get our rogue to safety. Can you trust me when I say that I'll be all right?"
