"Hm?" He looked up from his work, the bowl already filling with shredded cheese. "Just make sure it's done all the way through, and you might wanna get the pans out from under the ovens and make sure they're clean. Should be, I washed 'em yesterday, but you know how things happen. I'll be in there in a few minutes."

"Do you usually let the sausage rest before cutting it?" He asked, wanting a little more time out of the kitchen. "Do you want me to preheat the oven at all?"

Willie could see what he was doing, and he tried to keep the smugness off his face. "Sausage is already crumbled," he started, "but how about you finish this shredding while I go see about those pans and check the sauce?

RJ really was out of it if he hadn't noticed the sausage was just about done. Of course, it had been over by Merrick where he hadn't been looking. For reasons.

"No, no, you're comfortable." He took a deep breath and rubbed his hands on his jeans. "I'll do it."

"RJ."

Willie nodded for him to come back over. "He know you like him yet?"

"I don't!" RJ protested, before he sighed and pulled up a chair by Willie. "It's just hero worship. I was...terrified yesterday, before I stumbled on Merrick. I thought I'd have to live my life alone because I was attacked by a monster and turned into one. I owe him my life."

He looked to Willie with a plaintive look in his eyes. "It'll pass. It has too."

"Why does it have to?" Willie answered, brows raised as he looked up from his work. "Merrick's a good guy. Things have been kind of rough on him for the past while, and honestly? He could use somebody to take his mind off things. So I'll tell you this - if you like him, good. Just don't hurt the boy. He's had enough of that for one life."

"I've already been forced to believe in monsters. Love at first sight seems a little much." He said, thought he gave more attention to fiddling with one of his bracelets.

But he meet Willie's eyes when he replied, "The last thing I would ever do is hurt him. I'd leave before I did that. But it's been a day...I'm extremely grateful. That's all."

Willie nodded slowly. "Then let me say one more thing. Don't talk yourself out of it. Give the both of you the chance to figure things out. Y'never know just what the world's gonna make happen. Might've found him for more reason than you think."

But then he gave RJ a smile across the table. "Now get back in there and check on those pans and turn that oven up to three-fifty. I'll bring the cheese in in just a few minutes."

"Alright." RJ said by way of agreement with a small smile of his own. "But don't get comfortable playing match maker either." His tone was teasing, but he was serious. The last thing he needed with Willie trying to set them up.

"Yes sir!" He jumped up and put the chair back. With one more smile, he returned to the kitchen. His smile dimmed a bit but it was still there when he moved to stand next to the Merrick so he could check the sausage and pre-heat the oven.

With a chuckle, Willie assured, "That's the most I'll say, son, you have my word," but then he let RJ go and went back to concentrating on finishing up the cheese.

Merrick, meanwhile, had pulled the meat from the flame, both the beef and sausage having been finished, and had checked on the noodles and the sauce. All of it seemed perfect, at least to Merrick's untrained eye.

It was only out of habit, not an distrust in Merrick, that RJ looked over everything to make sure it was cooking well. As he pre-set the oven, he turned down the sauce a bit to prevent it from boiling. "Everything looks good here."

Seeing the meat taken care of, he smiled at Merrick before moving to get the pans to wash. He pulled them out and set them in the sink to scrub down.

The pans were full size and four inches deep, stainless steel and well-kept, and when RJ took up his position to start washing, Merrick came over to stand beside him. "I'll rinse and dry," he offered. "Two people will make it go faster."

A bit timid still, especially after realizing Willie had noticed, RJ gave him a small grateful look. "Sure. It shouldn't take long, Willie said he cleaned them a few days ago, they just need a quick going over."

Merrick nodded and smiled, grabbing a sprayer and towel to help out. No matter what it was that was going on between them, there was no reason not to help. "Do you like it so far?" Merrick asked as he worked, giving RJ a glance.

"What's not to like? RJ said as he scrubbed down one pan real fast then handed it to Merrick, who he glanced at. "You and Willie have been so welcoming and kind. And I've missed cooking in a real kitchen more then I'd like to admit." He started on another pan that ad come crud on the side.

Merrick smiled as he rinsed it off, then started drying - the inside more than the outside. The inside was where the food was going to go, after all, and the outside was going to be directly exposed to the oven's heat. "Well, I'm glad that you found your way to my camp. It seems like you needed it."

"I did. I know you are growing tired of it but I will never be able to say thank you enough." This time when RJ handed over the pan, he caught Merrick's eye and smiled. "I think I will be very happy here."

And now he was sounding sappy. No wonder Willie had noticed.

He gave RJ a nod. "I hope you are happy here. It's been a good place for me." And that was no small thing, after what he'd managed to live through.

He scrubbed the third pan for a moment before he asked, "Did you ever want someone else around? I, mean, Willie's amazing, I just..." Wanted to know if you ever wanted someone to get close too "was wondering."

"For a while, I had some..." They weren't exactly friends, but they weren't really strangers, either. How could he explain it but -- Well. "acquaintances," he finished at last, "who visited now and then, and it was kind of nice. But now they're all busy, so it has been a little lonely around here. Even with Willie and the customers."

"I'm sorry, about your friends. I hope I can assist with the lonely part." He handed over the pan and started on the last one. "If you want me to of course. The offer to teach me to play pool still stands I hope?"

Merrick nodded at both. "You're already helping, and of course it stands. It's what Willie and I both do during slow times. There isn't always enough work to keep two people busy, and now that we have more, that'll just make more downtime."

RJ couldn't stop himself from smiling when he said he was helping and he passed over the last dish. "I'm sure we can find something to pass the time. I know I want to take full use of a kitchen again."

"I can't imagine Willie would stop you from it," he smiled. "He's already glad to have more cooking help. I'm okay with seeing when things are done, but I'm hopeless with seasoning."

He finished drying by then and moved the pans over to the pot so he could start on the lowest layer of noodles in all of them.

"Oh, there are some clips over there if you could give them a quick once-over? Green for zucchini, purple for mushrooms, red for beef, yellow for sausage, black for mixed -- easy way to tell what's what by just glancing at the pans."
