But Merrick sighed out his breath. "I was thinking more about you, anyway. I know you can protect yourself, but I saw their armament. It's a little stubborn and alpha of me, but I see all this as my territory to protect. I wasn't even thinking of rogue Wolves."

"You see me as territory to protect?" RJ asked before he could stop himself. He didn't sound offended and a small part of himself that he refused to admit, like the sound of it. "I mean...it is your territory. You are the Alpha here. I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing."

Spirits, he was such an idiot. He closed his eyes and ducked his head to regain his composure.

"I see you as a pack member to protect," Merrick clarified gently. "You are still new to the gift, but you're strong. I know you'll be fine and strong, but you do need more practice." He was so sure of it. RJ had all the markings of a good Wolf. He just needed to learn.

The clarification brought some relief as RJ realized his feelings hadn't been found out as he misspoke.

"I'll take pack member. Hopefully I'll feel like one soon too." He did need practice, lots of it, but he was willing to learn. Both to keep people safe from himself and to stay close to Merrick.

He smiled over at RJ, reaching out to pat his shoulder. "I'm sure you will. Just be patient with yourself." That was always key - and always the hardest part.

"We're almost to the roadhouse. Let's get some breakfast, then do some prep work, then get ready." They had a lot to do that night.

"I admit, I'd feel better if the moon wasn't so close." That was the real source of his nerves. Changing for the third time, second under Merrick's guidance, would have been hard but the hunter's were just making it worse. "But I guess they wouldn't be here if it wasn't."

Then RJ nodded in agreement. "How does pancakes sound? I could use some comfort food."

"That sounds wonderful. ...Maybe with some pie filling." Why even pretend he didn't like pie filling? It was like compote, but easier. Willie had once caught him eating blueberry pie filling out of the can, in fact.

At the suggestion of condiment, RJ couldn't help but laugh. "I think I can arrange that. Willie has some strawberries left from the strawberry shortcake a few nights ago." And really, even if there wasn't, he'd find some way to get Merrick pie filling with his pancakes.

He laughed gently. "Is there anything you can't make?" It wasn't a challenge or a tease as much as a statement of wonder.

For Merrick? No. But RJ wasn't about to voice that out loud, even if he practiced it full force. "I always like a challenge." He said instead.

"You're good at it," he said, patting RJ's shoulder. "And I'm glad of it. Between you and Willie, you make sure I eat good."

"Wouldn't want our bouncer to starve, now would we?" RJ said with a smile, though in his mind, bouncer was replaced with many other things he couldn't say out loud,

When they reached the Roadhouse, RJ disappeared into the kitchen to start on breakfast and the prep work for that night.

And Merrick started his usual cleaning, sweeping everything up, pulling the chairs down for the day, polishing tables - getting everything ready so that he and RJ could take the necessary time to prepare for the upcoming night.

A bit later, RJ came out with two stacks of pancakes, covered in strawberry compote. "Breakfast!" He called to Merrick before retreating back into the kitchen for juice for Merrick and tea for himself.

"They smell amazing," he said, and when the plate was put in front of him, he smiled, leaning over to take a long, deep inhale of that scent. "Mm. Perfect. And a start with a little sugar is just what we need."

They'd need the energy.

Merrick enjoying his food had always been a weak spot for RJ. He really needed to stop making things like this but he couldn't help it. He liked having someone to cook for who genuinely liked everything he made. "There is a reason it's called comfort food." He laughed lightly as he started eating.

"I wish I could show you some of the things I used to eat, but they don't really exist anymore," he said, sighing. "And I've never been a great cook, anyway. I just know how to make the most basic stuff -- though Willie has taught me a few things." A few. But nothing like this, which Merrick was eating heartily.

RJ was going to regret this but.. "I could teach you, if you want. Then, maybe we could recreate some of the things you used to eat. It may not be exact but we can try." It would be fun and it could be a way to give back to Merrick for everything he'd done for him.

"We'll see." Giving RJ a smile, he popped a bit of strawberry into his mouth. "I kind of like having people cook for me, though. It definitely tastes better."

"Oh I see how it is!" RJ teased with a laugh around a bite full of pancakes. "You want people to wait on you."

A grin spread across his face. "Well, when you're so good at it..."

[spiritofthewolf]

"Flattery will get you no where." RJ said, punctuated by a strawberry on his fork. "Or is it everywhere? I can never remember and the expression works either way in different context."

It got him a laugh and a nudge against his shoulder. "See, that's why you're so good at it."

"I'm good at cooking because you flatter me? Think very highly of yourself, don't you." RJ nudged back then settled into really eat.

"Everybody's good at something. I'm good at manual labor, you're good at cooking." He was still smiling as he followed RJ's example, though, and really dug into his pancakes. The compote was wonderful, and the pancakes were perfect. He really couldn't get much better than this.
