"You already taught me a way around using tickets to take orders," Merrick pointed out.

That RJ just waved off. "That was just a simple work around to make things easier for everyone. You didn't have to write and I didn't have to worry about missing a verbal order."

"Still, it's more than I'd thought of." He gave RJ a warm smile. "And I appreciate it."

The warm smile led to a bashful one from RJ, who suddenly felt the attraction come back with a vengeance. He had to fight to swallow the bite from his sandwich past the lump in his throat. "Least I could do. So...Anything else we need to do before supper?" He asked, eyes down on his plate.

That got Merrick looking around the dining room and then into the kitchen before shrugging. "Well, we still have the other lasagnas to cook, and we could probably stand to wash a few dishes--"

He broke off, though, and looked toward the door as he heard an engine sound. "But I think that's Willie's truck."

RJ nodded. "The meats are done, as is the mixed. I'll go get the vegetable ones going and start dishes if you want to go help Willie bring in his load?" He stood up and began clearing their dishes, not really wanting to be around when Merrick started carrying things again. The first time had been embarrassing enough.

"All right," he nodded. "Just be careful not to burn yourself. The oven can be a little weird sometimes about what parts get hot."

But he still stood and headed out to the truck, rolling his shoulders for a bit of a stretch on the way.

"That's what oven mitts are for!" RJ shot back teasingly before retreating. He put the dishes in the sink and paused to take a deep calming breath. This was ridiculous, a smile was not supposed to unmake him.

With another deep breath, he went looking for where he put the oven mitts to switch out the lasagnas in the oven, keeping an ear out for Merrick and Willie.

He wasn't, unfortunately, spared the sight of Merrick carrying things. Instead, Merrick came in through the back door into the kitchen to deck the counters with bags of supplies, though he didn't stay in one place very much. Three trips and all that was finished. Just in time for Willie to call, "RJ. Come on out here," from the dining room.

And RJ had never been more interested in doing dishes then he was right then. Nope, not paying attention to the other wolf being totally manly, nope not at all. It was to the point that he almost didn't hear Willie call his name.

He quickly dried his hands and ventured out into the dining room. "What is it Willie?"

He was seated at one of the tables, foot propped up in a chair opposite him, and he nodded toward the bar where a plastic bag with the usual "Thank You" repeat down the side was sitting. "Bag there's for you," he said. "Bring it on over and open it up."

Really, it didn't look like there was much in it. It was heavy when lifted, though, with whatever was inside wrapped in layers of tissue paper.

Frowning slightly in confusion, RJ retrieved the bag and brought it over, surprised at both it's weight and the fact it was for him. He set it down on the table where Willie sat, drew it out and began to unwrap it. "Willie, you didn't have to..."

"Made up my mind while I was watching you work a while ago," Willie answered, picking up a bottle of frosty lemonade to take a long drink. Inside of the packet was a bundle of canvas fabric that, when it was unfolded, proved to be an apron with the Willie's Roadhouse logo embroidered on the left chest, with "RJ" in a curved font embroidered beneath in maroon thread.

Merrick watched from the doorway, smiling as he watched. He hadn't really expected it, but he wasn't surprised - and, really, it was nice to see.

RJ had pulled the cloth bundle out while Willie was talking but didn't get a good look at it until he was done and he let the cloth unfold in his hands.

When he realized what it was, he sat down hard in a convenient near by chair. "I...I don't know what to say." His overwhelming gratitude was plain on his face. "Thank you."

"See if you thank me at the end of the night," the older man laughed, eyes sparkling with humour. "Might need to get you one of those paper hats, though. You and Merrick and that hair, I swear."

"I like my hair," Merrick returned.

RJ wasn't even listening, he was just looking down in his lap, rubbing the fabric of the apron between his fingers.

When Merrick spoke, he looked up again. "What about Merrick's hair?" He asked, distractedly.

Merrick chuckled as he came over, resting his hands on the table's surface. "Willie just thinks we have too much of it," he answered. "Longer hair isn't his favourite."

"Spent too long in the Army for it," Willie agreed. "Be glad I'm not having you boys wear hairnets."

He looked at Merrick and noticed the fact they both had longer hair for the first time. "Maybe it's a wolf thing."

The idea of hairnets made RJ laugh. "You could compromise. I know of quite a few places that use ball caps. would keep up the image of the place."

"If we need to, that's probably what I'll do," Willie agreed, "but for now, I think we can just go with the aprons. Nobody's said a thing about hair in their food yet, even with somebody going prematurely grey around here."

"Oh, come on, Willie," Merrick teased, though he knew his employer was joking about his silver streak, "you aren't that grey."

RJ's immediate response to the mentioned gray hair was to say he liked Merrick's silver streak. It was unusual and fit him rather well. But he kept that to himself, because really, and just smiled at their friendly banter with each other.

Both Merrick and Willie were smiling. "All right, you two - Merrick, you've gotta give up your new best friend for a while so he and I can go over the menu before people start coming in for the rush. You go on out there and fix those light bulbs before you get stuck sitting by the door all night."

"Yessir," Merrick chuckled. "See you after the rush, RJ."

The 'new best friend' crack caused RJ to flush slightly and earned Willie a look. "Let me switch out the last lasagna in the oven and I'll be right back." He gave Merrick a small mile and wave before retreating into the kitchen for a few minutes.

And Merrick headed outside to get the ladder and bulbs to start the repairs before the lights needed to be turned on for the night.

The menu, at least, was pretty simple. Burgers, of course, with a variety of toppings from mushroom caps to avocados to bacon, a few salads, some Italian sandwiches that the leftover pasta sauce would be used on, chicken fried steak, french fries -- slightly upscale diner food, all prepared homestyle. Almost everything was a la carte so mains and sides could be mixed and matched as anyone wanted. It would be a trial by fire, but he wouldn't be alone.

The menu was simple enough to once they'd gone over it, and after they determined a ticket system, RJ went to the back to start getting the prep done. A lot of the burger toppings and sides could be prepared ahead of time and assembled quickly when ordered, as well as getting things battered and ready to drop in the fryer when ordered. It was a lot of prep but it would make service flow so much better.

Once he was in a place he felt he could take a short break, he got a glass of water and just stood at the bar to get out of the hot kitchen for a moment. If he watched Merrick work through the windows, he wasn't going to admit ti.

Merrick had discarded his overshirt in favour of working just in his T-shirt perched high on a ladder to change the lightbulbs both he and Willie had noticed had gone out. He was still up there as the supper rush started.

It certainly wasn't a posh crowd. The majority were in older cars and pickup trucks, with a peppering of motorcycles. But the second they learned that Willie's special was lasagna, cell phones came out and the crowd grew.
