"10 please."

Merrick was almost to the door when RJ put a hand on his arm. "Be careful, okay?" Despite the happy moment they'd just had, he couldn't forget the hunters.

He paused at the touch, but then nodded. "I'll be fine. We both will." Even if it meant he had to do the unthinkable. He'd protect them both however he had to.

But then he went out to deliver the burgers to the right table and brought his seat back to a position right outside the kitchen door, tray returned inside. He noticed that the hunters didn't give him any undue attention. All the better.

Funny, RJ was thinking the same thing. He wasn't going to let the ancient wolf be captured or killed if he could help it. He owed Merrick that much.

As service went on for the rest of the night, RJ would occasionally peek out the door to see Merrick sitting there. It did make him feel better, right up until the kitchen closed and he started cleaning up.

The night, after those two left, went smoothly. Willie had refused them rooms and Merrick had been grateful though without words. Soon enough, they were all cleaning up - sweeping, washing, putting chairs up on tables, and turning off the exterior lights. Merrick still had quite a lot to think about, though. Like what to do about their newfound threat.

Soon, the only thing left to do in the kitchen was throw out the garbage in the dumpster out back. Normally, the dark didn't bother him but now...well, even a trained warrior could be nervous in the dark when they had good reason. With a shake of his head that he was being ridiculous, he picked up the trash bags in each hand and pushed through the back door.

Out a few feet, swing the bags over the rim, and then back to the kitchen.

Merrick was in the kitchen when RJ came back in. "Don't forget to lock that door. Willie's out there waiting for us. It's about time for us all to have a long conversation."

Locking the door before he even turned around, RJ took off his apron and set it aside.

"Alright. Coming." He followed docilely after Merrick and leaned against the bar with his arms crossed.

Willie sat at one of the stools and Merrick took a seat at another, arms resting on the bar top. "There are two things we can't change," he started quietly. "One is that, on the full moon, we will change. The other is that those hunters probably won't leave until they've killed at least one wolf."

"So what do we do?" It pained him to ask the obvious question but it was the truth.

"If we hide, they'll just come back in a month. Plus, it will give them more time to figure out who we are as humans." The men were gruff but they couldn't be stupid if they'd lasted this long as werewolf hunters. "And given the situation...I don't know how much help I'm going to be." That was his biggest worry. As a new wolf, he wouldn't be able to keep control and therefore put Merrick in danger.

Merrick shook his head. "You were fine last month. I don't doubt you'll be fine this month," he said. "So don't worry about that. When it comes to these hunters, I'm going to need you."

"The question is," Willie interrupted, "if you two think they're reasonable. If they'll believe you if you tell them the truth."

But Merrick shook his head. "That's definitely not the impression I got."

While RJ was pleased Merrick had so much faith in him, he only hoped he'd be able to concentrate enough to keep himself centered when he was worried about the hunters.

He was glad Willie interrupted so he didn't have to voice his doubts on that, but instead on something else. "He's right. That's not the impression I got either. They wanted to hunt, not talk."

Merrick sighed. "The rogues have ruined our reputation as protectors."

"I gotta say that's not a story I ever heard," Willie agreed. "But I'm wonderin' just how these guys found you. It's not like you hurt anything every month."

"That's what I've wondered, too. I hunt what a wolf would hunt. What a sustenance hunter would hunt. I've never harmed anyone, or turned anyone. In fact, I've made a conscious effort to stay away from humanity while I'm changed."

"It's why I was terrified of what I was." RJ admitted, hugging his arms around himself. "And I'm so grateful to Merrick. I didn't think there was any other option but to be a monster."

He bit his lip before he brought up what they'd discussed in the kitchen. "Merrick brought up that they might have a captive wolf. Who could possibly help them track others. It could be how they found us to begin with." He shook his head. "There has to be money involved. Otherwise, why would they go after wolves who aren't hurting anyone?"

"I don't know anything about what money may be involved, but I do know that our kind of Wolves," he started, motioning between himself and RJ, "have a different scent than natural wolves. Not different enough that we can't share territory, but different enough that I can smell the difference when I'm changed. That's the only way I can think of that we were tracked down."

"What if they do have a captive... rogue, you call 'em?"

"Then I need to go in there, find it, and..." He stopped before saying 'free it.' That wasn't safe for anyone. But bring it to a different kind of captivity and teach it to be human...

It was worth a try. But to do that before the full moon? It would be tight.

"I just don't understand why they'd come after us in the first place." RJ sighed. What was the thrill in hunting wolves that weren't hurting anyone, unless it was for some gain? Not that he understood the thrill of the hunt to begin with, begin a vegetarian and all.

"We will find them and help them." RJ said firmly. He wasn't going to let Merrick do this alone and risk being captured or killed, not if he could help. "Would being a rogue for so long affect them when they were human?" He'd only been rogue for his first month so he didn't know if it could affect a person over time.

Merrick slowly shrugged. "I'm not sure. I've never dealt with a long-time rogue. It's possible. But when we find them, we'll find out - and find out why they're doing it, too."

"I've seen you boys fight," Willie said as he stood, shaking his head, "so I know you'll be fine. But I was the one who got to do night strikes while I was in the military. You'll need some camo, and I happened to save mine. I was more your size, then."

"Even me?" RJ said teasingly, since he was notably skinnier then either man. But then he shook his head with a small smile. "I'm sure I can figure something out with whatever you have."

Then he looked back to Merrick. "So, what's the plan?"

"We're going to find where they're staying, which shouldn't be hard, and then we'll go in, see if there's a rogue, take care of that first, then see what we can find about why they're hunting Wolves," Merrick said, the plan firm in his mind. "With any luck, they'll have let an apartment instead of staying in a motel."

"There isn't much around here, it shouldn't be too hard." RJ said by way of agreement. He'd gone to town with Willie a few times so he knew that the definition of town was stretching it. If they were hiding the rouge in the woods...that would be a different story.

"Unless they went into Turtle Cove proper," Willie said from where he was pulling on his coat.

"That's true," Merrick nodded. "The city would make them harder to track - but with a truck like theirs, it'll be hard to miss. Headed home?"

"To get you boys some camo. I'll be back in about half an hour."

"Be careful out there, Willie." Just because the man wasn't a wolf, didn't mean RJ didn't worry about him too.

Once Willie was out the door, RJ sat down hard on one of the stools. "I really hope I didn't lead them here. Maybe they followed my trail from Ocean Bluff?"

And that was something that was possible. "I hadn't thought of that," he murmured. "Should I ask what happened there?" If there had been a reason for him to leave, there was a possibility he'd left his trail.

"Just as I've told you." RJ said with a sigh. "I was doing night drills in the forest on the night of the full moon. I was by myself for the moment and I was attacked. I tried to fight back thn get away but the wolf bit me in the side and then...all I remember is anger, rage and fear." He hugged his arms around himself and fidgeted, the memory of the night of his turning always making him uncomfortable. "I vaguely remember attacking some of the other students. When I awoke the next morning, I was collared and tied to a tree. My father threw me out of the academy and told me never to come back." And the pain of that had yet to fade. He never could live up to his father's expectation and being turned into a monster had just seemed to be the final failure in his father's eyes. "Dominic gave me the necklace he always wore as I was leaving and then I just....tried to get as much distance as I could without going near people."

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I admit...I wasn't exactly careful. But I was traveling as a human. I don't know what trail I would have left before I showed up at your campsite the night of the next moon."

But with the retelling, Merrick sighed. "It is possible you were followed. Especially if they heard of an attack there. Even in your human form, you have a certain scent that marks you as a Wolf, though it's faint. ...It is, unfortunately, another argument for them to have a captive Rogue on their side." Unwilling, he was sure, but still present.

"Damn." His hand gripped his hair and he closed his eyes with a sigh. "I'm sorry, Merrick. They'd never have found you if it weren't for me." He could help the guilt clenching his heart. If something happened to Merrick now...He'd just have to make sure if they got a wolf, it was a black one and not a gray.
