But with the retelling, Merrick sighed. "It is possible you were followed. Especially if they heard of an attack there. Even in your human form, you have a certain scent that marks you as a Wolf, though it's faint. ...It is, unfortunately, another argument for them to have a captive Rogue on their side." Unwilling, he was sure, but still present.

"Damn." His hand gripped his hair and he closed his eyes with a sigh. "I'm sorry, Merrick. They'd never have found you if it weren't for me." He could help the guilt clenching his heart. If something happened to Merrick now...He'd just have to make sure if they got a wolf, it was a black one and not a gray.

Merrick shook his head. "Don't blame yourself. I'm sure they would've found me eventually - and I would be alone. Easier to catch. With you here, we're two against two." And they had hope of turning the rogue to their side.

"Here's hoping it's not three against two, as we fear." The idea of a rogue wolf as their captive still made his blood run cold. "Or we make it three against two, if we can." He said, having a similar thought.

"Will you be able to handle taking another Wolf captive if we have to? With the intent of bringing it over into humanity again, of course."

"I'd rather that then killing it." RJ said firmly. Killing it would be harder for him, honestly.

Merrick nodded. "So would I. But if the rogue can't be returned to humanity, it may be a necessity. For everyone's safety."

RJ nodded simply as a shiver went down his spine. He couldn't help but wonder how close he'd come to becoming a rogue with that. If he hadn't stumbled upon Merrick...It was one of the many things he was grateful to the other wolf for.

"So, how do you want to do this? Start the hunt tonight or tomorrow?"

"I think we should wait until tomorrow," he murmured. "It would be too much of a giveaway for something to happen with them tonight." Too much of a hint as to how they'd been discovered as hunters.

"Plus, I think we all need a good night's sleep." And to punctuate that statement, RJ let out a large yawn. "It's been a rough night for everyone. I can warm up your pizza first, if you are still hungry that is?"

With a nod, he answered, "That'd be great. Why don't you get something veggie and join me?" A chance to come down from the stressful tension that their two unexpected "guests" had brought.

"Sure." He replied with a smile. Some food would do them both good. RJ moved back into the kitchen and pulled Merrick's pizza and some extra veggie left over out of the fridge. He set the oven on a low temp and waited for it to heat.

While RJ heated the food, Merrick drew them some drinks - tea for RJ (as he didn't want to assume), beer for himself - and set places at the bar. One night to relax, and then they would have to get to work.

When RJ finally brought out the plates laden with three slices each, he nodded to the beer taps. "Pour me one too. I'll be too wired with nerves to sleep other wise." But as he put down the plates, he picked up the tea to sip at it with a smile of gratitude.

"Gotcha," he said, and drew off another, doing it with a practiced hand that left the perfect head at the top of the glass. Willie had taught him more than just a few pool tricks. "Thank you for making me that pizza, by the way. It's really great."

Flushing at the thanks, RJ deftly hid it by taking another sip of tea, draining half the cup before putting it back on the bar top. "You're welcome. It's the least I could." Merrick was probably tired of hearing that from him but it would never stop being true.

Merrick seated himself and picked up a slice, inhaling the scent as he had before, then taking a hearty bite. Just as good as it had been. "Mmh. I'm sure Willie will give you pizza nights again. Probably about once a week, with the success of tonight."

Nibbling at one of his own slices, he looked up at Merrick with a considering look. "You think so? With everything going on, I was a little distracted. I didn't really get a chance to gauge what people thought, especially since they are so used to Willie's cooking..." Granted, RJ did a lot more of the cooking nowadays but it was still Willie's recipes in Willie's kitchen.

"Yeah, I think so. I mean, this morning, Willie was talking about business having picked up enough that he's considering hiring some waitstaff. Another reason for us to make sure we get those hunters off our trail," Merrick said, and lifted his glass to RJ. "To the chance for Willie to retire."

"To Willie's impending retirement." RJ said and lifted his glass of beer in return, clinking the glasses together gently before taking a sip. "And wait staff? Really?" He considered that over another sip of beer. "Would it be safe for them? Considering...everything." Or more, would it be safe for the two wolves. A secret like that was kind of hard to keep with more people around.

"Well, we'd only need their help for the evening rush, so whoever it is he got to work here, they'd only be doing part time except for maybe one night a month," he said with a shrug. "That wouldn't be so hard to keep a secret around."

"If you say so. You're the expert." It was the truth after all. RJ was still nervous about the whole secret thing and he liked only having Merrick and Willie around most of the time. Less people to get hurt.

"Trust me," Merrick said with a gentle smile. "I have faith in you, and I have faith in us - all of us - to keep that secret until we can change some minds."

The gentle smile brought a bashful one from RJ and he hid it in his beer, which he drained about half of. "Maybe after a few more moons, I'll feel just as confident."

He nodded, reaching over to pat his arm. "Just have faith in yourself that you'll make it."

There was the sound of wheels on the gravel outside and Merrick looked up- "Willie's back. That took less time than I figured it would."
