"I say so." And then, with a smile, Merrick focused on finishing dinner before he started gathering up dishware to take in to wash. Soon, it'd be time to go upstairs and get some rest. Tomorrow... Tomorrow would be an interesting day.

RJ finished his pizza as well and followed Merrick into the kitchen, working side by side with him to get things ready for the next day. Finally, he followed Merrick upstairs. "Good night." He said with a pause by his door.

"Rest well, RJ," he answered, having picked up the tub of clothes on the way. "I'll have these aired out by tomorrow so any wolf they have on their side will have less chance of sniffing us out." Less. But their scent would always be distinctive.

"Okay. I trust you." He couldn't help the emotion that went into that last word and with a mumbled 'good night' he ducked into his room. RJ quickly got ready for bed, even though he knew sleep was going to be hard coming tonight. For many reasons, including the troublesome hunters and the handsome warrior sleeping next door.

The next morning, RJ was out meditating earlier then usual. The upcoming moon and the hunters had him on edge and if he was going to be of any use to Merrick he need to have a calm head. Or at least an attempt at one. Later, he'd practice his forms a bit, as that often helped in situations where meditation couldn't.

The next morning, Merrick went out to play for the Deer. He'd hung the clothes on a line he'd strung across his room and had left the windows open - enough to circulate air through the room and let the dusty smell blow away. He'd spoken to the Spirits after he'd played, too - enough to let them know that he was going to have to do something dangerous and to ask their blessing.

He was on his way back to the Roadhouse when he caught sight of RJ doing his forms. He approved, really. A good way to stretch and to center himself, and Merrick watched. The forms were, in a way, familiar - but they weren't what he'd been taught. All the more reason to watch and learn.

It was very clear that the forms RJ favored were ones that were based on agility and speed. Parts were almost pure gymnastics. He would never be the typical warrior that relied on their strength, but he played to the strengths he did have. And he thanked the spirits everyday for Master Swoop, who'd shown a very depressed young boy that strength wasn't everything, no matter what his own father said.

He was practicing balance by walking on his hands when he realized someone was watching him. He'd lost himself in the movements, a dangerous thing to do with hunters around but it had helped him calm down. Or it did until he startled himself and fell into a heap, right at Merrick's feet.

Merrick stifled a laugh and let it melt into a friendly smile, a hand stretched down. "Sorry. I didn't mean to distract you. Are you okay?"

Every word was sincere, even if he couldn't help the smile. It was such a perfect collapse, somehow graceful even mid-fall.

Despite the laugh and smile, RJ flinched out of embarrassment when he saw a hand in his field of vision. It was a lingering tic from training with his father from an early age and being berated whenever he fell or failed. Master Swoop had dealt with it wordlessly, though he knew the master hadn't liked it.

He swallowed hard and forced a small smile as he took Merrick's hand. "Yeah, I'm fine. I should have been more aware of my surroundings."

"It could've happened to anyone." Merrick pulled him up onto his feet easily, his strength more than up to the task. "Today's kind of tense, anyway. I was thinking about joining you."

The strength was plain and a small part of RJ envied it. If he'd been a warrior like Merrick, he wouldn't have disappointed his father so much. But he was happy with who he was and his agility. He didn't regret that.

"Oh ummm, sure. You're more then welcome to join me." He wasn't sure how he was going to concentrate with Merrick moving beside him but he'd have to try.

"I've not seen forms like yours before. We might have to trade some knowledge." And it was a welcome thought, really. The idea of being able to learn and teach at once. "Show me."

Something simple to think about besides the mission they were going to go on that night. Something easy.

RJ licked his lips nervously. "I...I don't if my forms would be right for you. They are designed for warriors who can't depend on strength." He couldn't meet Merrick's eye as he spoke. The other wolf was a true warrior, he deserved the right forms.

"I know the normal ones too. I could show you those." He knew them perfectly. He'd trained in them tirelessly. They had just been absolutely ineffective without muscle and power behind them.

"How about we start with the normal ones then move to yours? I trained for speed, too, and did... decently well." Not fantastic, but better than some. "I don't doubt you're better than I am, though. I can show you how I was trained."

"Okay." He didn't really see why Merrick would want to learn his agility forms when he could do the power and strength ones with ease but to protest would only lead the other wolf to ask why. His father and his disapproval was not something he wanted to tell Merrick about.

"I...I would like that." He said with a small, hesitant smile in reply to seeing how Merrick was trained. His father aside, RJ had liked learning different styles of fighting.

Merrick smiled in return, then fell in beside him, his flute set aside for the sake of keeping it safe while he learned. He was a good mimic. And when it came to fighting, he was a fast learner. When RJ had gone through the forms once, Merrick was able to repeat them, and then faster the second time.

Of course Merrick would master the forms perfectly. The forms RJ had taken forever to learn. But any resentment was stifled by the genuine joy RJ felt at just being close to Merrick.

When they go through the basics, RJ called a halt, notably before they got to the forms he was practicing earlier. "We really should go get some breakfast. We have a long day."

"You're right," he said. "And I'm pretty sure Willie will want us to take most of the day off to prepare for what we've got to do tonight." But for now, there was breakfast. He settled a hand on RJ's shoulder and turned to head back toward the Roadhouse.

The hand on his shoulder was comforting, he was too nervous otherwise to worry about it. But he was more relaxed then had been when he woke up so there was that.

"I'll help him get as much prep work out of the way as I can. I know he survived before but...it's the least I can do." Plus it would do a lot to keep him calm.

Merrick nodded. "And I'll get at least something done for repairs, but then we'll need to prepare for tonight. We'll need to be out of here at about the same time as supper starts."

"I hope you have a plan on where to start. Or do you think they'll be out in the woods looking for more signs of us?"

"I'll have to teach you to run. To really run," he said, "but there are only so many hotels in town, and their truck is distinctive. We'll check them one by one. Their scents aren't unique enough for me to track like that."

But his eyes narrowed as he shook his head. "How did I miss it while they were here. How did I miss another Wolf..."

Maybe it had been RJ's scent covering it up. It had to be.

"Run? RJ asked curiously. He thought he knew how to run, had fairly good stamina too.

When Merrick wondered out loud, RJ came to the same conclusion and sighed, closing his eyes. "I'm sure it's my fault. My scent covering everything and I don't know any better to differentiate you from someone else."

But Merrick sighed out his breath. "I was thinking more about you, anyway. I know you can protect yourself, but I saw their armament. It's a little stubborn and alpha of me, but I see all this as my territory to protect. I wasn't even thinking of rogue Wolves."

"You see me as territory to protect?" RJ asked before he could stop himself. He didn't sound offended and a small part of himself that he refused to admit, like the sound of it. "I mean...it is your territory. You are the Alpha here. I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing."

Spirits, he was such an idiot. He closed his eyes and ducked his head to regain his composure.

"I see you as a pack member to protect," Merrick clarified gently. "You are still new to the gift, but you're strong. I know you'll be fine and strong, but you do need more practice." He was so sure of it. RJ had all the markings of a good Wolf. He just needed to learn.
