So admittingly, it's a mix of Lone Wolf and New Blood XD

A month ago, he'd been a promising kung fu student in the art of Pai Zhou. He was the son of one of the greatest masters the order had ever had. And it had all come crashing down after a night training in the woods and being attacked by a vicious beast.

After he'd changed the first time the night after, he hadn't needed to be cast out by the masters, which he had been regardless. He'd left on his own to protect his fellow students. Dominic had tried to talk him out of it, but RJ wouldn't pull his friend down with him, not when Dom was so close to earning his stripes.

So here he was, roaming the world near Turtle Cove, looking for somewhere safe to change for the full moon that night. He still didn't know much about the monster he'd become, he just knew he didn't want to hurt anyone.

The woods around Turtle Cove were, if anything, heavily scented with wolf. But only one. Just the one that seemed to be everywhere. It was someone's territory, that was for certain.

After his awakening, despite having found a place to stay there at the roadhouse with Willie, he'd still made himself a camp in forests that had changed but were still familiar. It was a clearing, a cave -- and in the center, there was a fire pit where a low blaze was burning with a wisp of smoke lifting over the treetops.

There was the scent of roasting meat, but all of the predators stayed away. Birds still sang, but smaller prey animals were nowhere to be seen.

All the signs pointed to the camp being inhabited, and soon enough, that was proven. A man walked from the cave and to the fire where he turned the spit a half-turn before looking up into the wind. Something - or someone - was coming.

The scent of the other wolf registered with RJ, but just that it was there. He didn't know enough about what he was to recognize the instinct that he should be more aware. More careful of his surroundings.

Really, all he could think about was the scent of meat. Before he'd been attacked, RJ had been a vegetarian, not wanting to eat fellow creatures. But afterwards...afterwards he almost hated himself for how much he craved meat. Needed it in fact. And the smell was just too much for him to ignore.

Even if RJ didn't recognize the signs of another wolf, he recognized signs of habitation which caused him to hide behind a nearby group of trees, rather then walk into the camp. He whimpered softly as his stomach grumbled. He was so hungry, but he wasn't dumb enough to ignore his instinct of what a bad idea it would be to take food from another wolf.

Merrick stood, silently measuring the wind, the scent, and he looked at--

A small copse of trees. It made him chuckle. It was so obvious, such an easy place to hide. He walked to the edge of his camp and called, "You can come out. Either confront me or go - and I think you're hungry."

There weren't any other food scents on the air. Only another person. Or perhaps another wolf.

When he was clearly found out, RJ leaned his head against a tree and groaned. He really hoped he wasn't going to be chased away...he was just so hungry.

He gathered himself and moved out from behind the trees, looking more like a kicked puppy then a wolf. Hunger didn't allow pride. "I'm sorry...I didn't mean to intrude. I just...I'm very hungry. But I don't want any trouble..."

He chuckled softly. "I can tell. Come on, I have enough to share."

The man really was harmless. Merrick could tell just from a look - and he smiled comfortably. The guy really did need to eat, and Merrick had four rabbits on the spit. Better four rabbits than a deer that he couldn't eat on his own.

RJ's look was pure grateful as he came forward. "Thank you, you have no idea how much I appreciate this."

He dropped his pack on the edge of the camp and moved forward, eying the meat with a look that was practically drooling and hating himself a little for it. But it wasn't like he could really deny himself the need for meat now. It didn't help that he had no idea how to hunt or cook it either.

He sniffed that air and looked at the other man warily. "Are you...are you a monster too?"

"I'm no monster," he answered with a flicker of a smile. "But I am a wolf."

Definitions. Maybe it was picky, but it was him. He had not been a monster - not for a while, anyway, and he wasn't going to call himself a monster anymore. Period, no matter what he'd done.

Still, he went to the fire and turned the rabbits once more. They still needed a little cooking before they were done. Wolf, he may be, but he preferred his meat done instead of still bleeding.

"I would hardly call it just a wolf." RJ said bitterly as he watched the rabbits on the fire. He shivered as the memories of his attack a month ago came back to him and his hand unconsciously went to the still healing wounds on his side. "If it were just a wolf, I wouldn't have felt the need to leave home to protect everyone."

It was more then obvious he was still scared and confused about what had happened to him. He'd tried meditating, which he was normally very good at, but until he faced his fears, he knew it wouldn't help.

"How long?" How long had this man been like this?

Merrick shrugged as he crouched there, looking over at his visitor. The hand at his side -- that was a little telling, and he decided he'd have to look into it. "Most of my life. You still have a bite, though, don't you?"

His mind was working through what herbs he had on hand that would promote healing. Even if the bite couldn't be reversed, the pain could at least be eased.

"Do you get used to it?" RJ asked before even acknowledging the bite on his side. He wanted to know if this was something he'd be able to live with.

With a sigh, he moved to sit on a nearby stump, wincing with the wound pulled. "It was just last month." He said to answer the question.

"You've not had anyone to teach you how to control it, have you?" he asked in answer, shaking his head. "And that means it wasn't something you went into knowingly."

Merrick placed a hand on his visitor's shoulder for a moment before heading back toward the cave. "Stay here. I'll get some salve and some bandages."

"I was training at night and I was attacked." RJ said by way of explanation. His dad would probably never look at night drills the same way again, now that they cost them his son. It was a shame...RJ had liked them because they were usually solo. "I didn't even know you could control it."

He looked at the other's hand on his shoulder and then up at him. "Oh. Okay. Thank you."

Before long, Merrick came back from the cave with a leather bag and a clay pot. "I will need you to take your shirt off," he said, "but you'll be bandaged soon enough."

RJ nodded and took off his shirt slowly, as it was still painful when it pulled. He'd tried to treat it but nothing he did would work. He took a deep breath and motioned for the other to come forward, resisting his ridiculous urge to growl.

He caught that expression, that fleeting look, and it made him smile. Yes, he really was new at this, wasn't he. "Rest your arm over my shoulder. I need a clear view," he said, crouching at RJ's side to look intently at the wound. He examined with gentle fingers, looking for infection, swells, redness - anything that would tell the story of what this wound needed.

Doing as he was asked, RJ did crane his neck to see what he was doing. The wound was very clean and well taken care of...but just wouldn't heal all the way. Like it was missing the right thing to heal properly. And it itched terribly.
