THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

"I hear that someone's been a good boy!" The sing-song male voice with an odd sort of Irish-English-American lilt to it preceded its owner by several seconds.

"Earned himself some walkies!" The approaching footfalls were soft on the synthetic flooring, he was wearing civilian shoes deep in the heart of the Starfleet covert operations compound.

"Let's see if you know how to heel then, shall we?"

The man who appeared in the doorway gave Kahn a bemused smile. He was a bit shorter than average for a human male, about six inches shorter than Kahn (fifteen centimetres, it's all centimetres now, the inch had become as quaint as unfamiliar as the shilling), and wore something that passed for business formal attire in modern fashion (i.e., something ridiculous looking and probably made of plastic polymers).

It was the razor-sharp alert intelligence reflected in his dark eyes that belied his vapid, boorishly patronising manner. This man did not make a believable cog in the military machine surrounding them that had already begun to collapse under its own weight. So what was he doing here? The same think Kahn was doing here, bending with deceptive grace under some crippling leverage Admiral Marcus had on him.

"The Golden Gate Bridge is such a boring tourist attraction, it's just a bridge, I was thinking we might go somewhere a bit more interesting instead. I hope you don't mind!" He made a lazy quarter-turn to face back in the direction from which he had come, fixing a long, slyly flirtatious gaze over his shoulder at his current charge.

An Omega. This man was biologically an Omega though his scent so chemically processed, sanitised, and sterilised that it was just this side of unrecognisable. The aggressive swagger, excessively arrogant demeanour, was he overcompensating as part of an attempt to hide his physical sex out of some sense of shame? Then why would he take such obvious pleasure in drawing attention to the fact that his exotic nature and distinctive pheromones were alluring enough to draw a bit of extra attention even from Betas, parading like a peacock instead of acting coy?

He had very likely been on suppressants all his life, possibly since he had been in the womb. So many years of growth and development, so much brain maturation, all taking place in a chemical environment which might have been stripped a little too ruthlessly bare of Omega hormones. The chances were very low that he had ever even experienced a pre-adolescent immature arousal cycle let alone a proper heat.

[ it was all very curious. it seemed like at the end of each week, like clockwork, merlin would make some sort of excuse to part from his company and take up that of gaius. at first, it was just annoying—he needed merlin more, obviously—but now, it was just plain mysterious.

so, before the day that merlin would act weird again, arthur speaks to his father—explaining that a town of their domain, hours away, was in need of gaius' consult. the man had to leave at once, and if need be, a scientific man of the town can be used for information in gaius's stead.

so the next day passes, and the one after that comes, and arthur waits in his room for merlin to arrive and begin tending to him. morning preparations and such. ]

[Merlin wanted no part of it at first, no matter how many times Gaius tried to plead the king's case. He just turned his head whenever the old physician appeared at Arthur's door with a "sleeping draught", an "energy tonic", "something to ease the soreness" after a recent tournament. Any excuse to keep the truth at bay.

But then he got to know Arthur. There were talks around campfires and long afternoons in his chambers, Arthur rambling about history or strategy while Merlin scrubbed the floors. And alright, sometimes the prat would kick the bucket over just to annoy him. But for the most part, Arthur was noble and good. He confessed things to Merlin that no prince should ever tell a servant. He admitted that he thought his father was wrong not to allow perfectly capable Omegas into the knighthood, never knowing that he was the one exception his father would make to every rule.

As usual, Merlin knew Arthur better than he knew himself.

Sir Bedivere was increasingly physical during one training session, and kept putting his nose to that place behind Arthur's ear in a way that made Merlin's stomach clench. Merlin flung him away with magic, and watched Arthur fight the others off with his blade. Something possessive and protective rose up inside of Merlin that day, because while whoever claimed Arthur would arguably rule Camelot, he wanted someone to want Arthur for Arthur. Not because he was the prince, not even because he's an Omega.

That's when he started preparing Arthur's tea himself, slipping in a dose of suppressants according to Gaius' instructions. And everyone continued to think that Arthur was an Alpha, including Arthur himself. He was strong and commanding and golden, and there was no reason to think otherwise. And it worked well for a time, until that morning when Merlin returned from the laundry to find the tea sitting untouched. Merlin drops the sheets and runs to the courtyard outside, where he finds Arthur with some of his youngest, strongest knights, Alphas every one. And Merlin knows what they're thinking, knows because sometimes he catches himself thinking it too, at the end of the day when his own suppressants are wearing a little thin. Because Merlin isn't without his own secrets.]

Arthur!

[He pushes past the knights, and they're already aggitated and some will probably call for his whipping. But gods, he can smell Arthur; practically taste him. And Merlin knows that the other Alphas are going to cotton on very soon, and then there's going to be a problem.]

And that person he solely relies on, is his idiot brother, thor. With thor gone, Loki honestly didn't know what to do; the trickster was desperate, in heat, and wanton for the golden princes touch. The sorceror even sent a discreet letter via bird messenger but its been far too long in wait for the blonde to return so thinking that the thunderer had forgotten about him, Loki sought another way to rid himself of this persistant itch. If he did so, it would break off the mental connection the brother's have. Loki hardly cares about that since dear brother isn't here to stop it.

Knowing he had to be subtle about it, Loki cast a spell on one of the male villiagers and he too became in heat. Before he knew it, the raven haired prince was about to be taken advantage of in the back room of the cabin by this total stranger. The only one to blame would be thor. ]

[Honestly, Taylor hadn't known what it was at first. She'd thought it was just standard attraction, possibly exacerbated by how much he looked like Reaper - that it was harmless, or it would just pass if she ignored it. It was only over time that she started to realise it was something more. Standard medical exams giving skin on skin contact that left her itching for some kind of outlet, when checking he was okay during emergencies started to become second nature (and the only way to calm herself down), when her heartrate started picked up just being in medbay. She never says anything. Doesn't know if he can even sense it, if it's just an alpha thing or if suppressants could be masking it for him. And she knows all the protests he'd make, can imagine him saying them clear as day - that she's too young for him, that the Tranquility's too dangerous, there's more important things going on. That he's already left once, come back not remembering anything or anyone. So she keeps her mouth shut, forces herself to put more distance between them any time she catches herself starting to hang around him like a lovesick puppy.

But the ship is dangerous, keeps throwing more shit at them, and after another week of fighting the kind of monsters she doesn't even want to try describing, she helps carry injured members of her team into the medbay and-- her control slips, for a moment. Just seeing him, so relieved he's still alive, still whole. It's a mistake, an accident, and she stays away for a day afterwards. There's enough work for both of them to be doing, more injured filtering into medbay, security cleanup to do. But she knows leaving it, trying to pretend it didn't happen is going to just make it worse, like a burr under the skin, knots in her stomach.

It's late when she comes down to the medbay. The lights are dimmed, patients asleep. He's at one of the desks at the back, like she thought he would be, and in some ways it makes it easier than going to find him in his room. She keeps the desk between them, reaching over to set the coffee she's brought in a clear spot, even though he should really go and get some rest.]

I shouldn't have done that yesterday. I'm sorry.

[Grabbed him in front of everyone. Kissed him in front of everyone. She swallows, feels the urge to turn and leave, but waits for whatever he might have to say about it.]
