THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

CONTENT WARNING: Below the cut contains descriptions of animalistic sexual behavior as applied to humans, situations of dubious consent, explicit situations, mpreg, and scenarios of societal oppression. Click with caution!

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

"Replicator?"

He says, voice soft with complaint. That's much less comforting.

"You must have guessed by now, I am a man out of time."

"Maybe that little crack about when children were put on suppressants in YOUR time might have tipped you off?"

Jim pets affectionately on the top of Khan's hair, a gentle but ridiculously patronising gesture for an Omega.

"We say 'putting on some tea.' There are too many different devices used to do it, getting specific just clouds the important issue. You won't find a matter replicator here, actual food is cheap and plentiful here compared to the energy required to synthesize it artificially. The hot water tap will have a red dot on it and there should be dry tea somewhere in the cabinets."

He darts in and nips him, the side of the throat this time, a quick physical command not to get smug, if he knows what's good for him.

"Cream or sugar?"

That makes Jim snicker even more even as he twitches away from the bite, oversensitive.

"Just milk if you would, thank you. Even now we only use cream in coff-- "

Jim grit his teeth and hugged himself, curling over slowly as another wave of pain washed over him.

"Yes, I know, I'm an Americanized heathen, laugh away."

He agrees, with the good grace not to comment on the way he suddenly furls like that.

"In a place like this, it's probably your godawful creamer anyways."

The sort that lurks in all the Starfleet labs, poisonous and unrefrigerated and strictly invented to set his hair on end, he feels.

Jim's voice is a bit strangled when he replies.

"Dear God no, I've paid for better than that. You'll probably even find coffee made from actual roasted beans from actual plants grown in actual dirt... "

"Good."

He says, darkly approving. There's a nesting instinct in there somewhere.

"In the morning, then."

Nesting instinct? Possibly. That or Moriarty puts an awful lot of value on material luxuries. He breathes in and out a few noisy times to collect himself again.

"Bath might be good." He starts to shrug out of his odd outer suit-tunic.

"Don't move too quickly, you're likely to be a little light headed."

He promises, stepping over to him, moving to help him the rest of the way off with his clothes.

"What does Marcus have over you?"

And possible affront to his pride takes a firm back seat to the desire not to be light headed. Jim cooperates.

"The opposite of what he has on you: information rather than a physical entity."

"Information is harder to control. Are you sure that when he dies, it dies?"

He moves away, to draw him his bath.

"Information is easier to control. It can't be killed, it must be discredited."

Khan's physical distance offers a sort of breathing room, making the physical processes going on in his body less wildly urgent, but he's also more aware of them. It's like being filled with razor blades.

"Discredit, and then explain why you let him use it over you for so long? That's a little more complicated."

Reminding him, as he calls from the other room. He adds a drop of the oil he finds there to the bath.

"Don't be absurd, he fabricated it AFTER I began investigating his suspicious activities on orders from an outside regulatory agency."

Bare feet. Why did that strike Jim as the weirdest thing at this moment? He gazed at his ghastly pale bare feet and wiggled his toes.

"You have thought this through."

He murmurs, approvingly.

"And what do you need me for?"

"You're the disaster that will topple his little empire, and in doing so will expose him in ways that will allow me to prove that he is the greatest evil of our time."

There was several seconds' pause, during which Jim clutched his belly and rasped out a few more breaths in an attempt to avoid holding his breath long enough to make himself pass out. As soon as he could he resumed speaking, evidently not believing that he would have a chance to do so later.

"The details of that disaster will depend on which of your pretty inventions you want to take with you when you go, what you want people to believe after you're gone, how difficult it will be to retrieve the item or items that are being held hostage... and just how wide a swath of destruction you can be persuaded to leave behind in the process."

"And if I do it, if I burn the place to the ground for you,"

Something he's seriously considering, in fact.

"What guarantee will I have that it will play out in my favour? How would you assure me that their lives would not be forfeit?"

Because there's a window, a moment between Khan striking the first blow, and his crew being in Marcus's care, where nothing will keep them from being snuffed out in their sleep.

"'Their lives,' hm? So I should narrow my most serious digging to humanoid prisoners then?"

There was no gloating in Moriarty's voice, this was so far from their usual paranoid dancing around that comparing the situations was laughable. Carefully, he slid to the ground so he could head over to the bathroom and Khan. Coming closer to the Alpha again was disorienting, dizzying.

"Very simple. You don't lift a finger until I have them completely secured. If you want to take all your invented toys along, and I suggest you do for more than one reason, then having them loaded on board will be taken care of while you're on your way to your getaway ship."

"You have the resources to locate seventy two human hostages, currently held in cryotubes?"

Because the cards are down, now. He needs to truly understand Moriarty's capabilities, and if he can count on them.

"Cryotubes? Easier done than said. You see, Marcus has made the foolish error of giving me access, either intentionally or unintentionally, to every last paint-chip of munitions and supplies he controls. I know where he's keeping it all and I can get my hands on the keys without even trying. Size, shape, mass, temperature, if I can't tell you where he's keeping it off the top of my head then I know exactly where to look it up."

Jim presses his face into the side of Khan's neck, breathing in deep.

"The idiot thinks that just because I can't find out what it's all supposed to do then I'm harmless."

"Good."

He agrees, moving to get him finally the rest of the way undressed and into his bath. They can put that one aside for now while he warms up, while the pain passes.

"How are you feeling now? Is it more or less intense than before?"

"Strange. It's still stabbing horribly like my insides are being sliced out but now there's a heavy ache to go with it."

He gazes in an unfocused way at Khan, trying to keep one of his hands in contact with the Alpha's arm.

"It's awful, but you, the smell of you, the way you look at me, is making me want to sleep through it. Almost as if I know I'll be defended so I can conserve my strength...

"After your bath, that's what we'll do. You can fall asleep in the water, if you like, I won't let you drown."

He promises, moving to roll his own shirt up to his sleeves. He'll wash him down; the touching will do him good.

Jim clutches at the sides of the tub and shivers as he's being washed.

"That... isn't supposed to feel like this..."

"This is precisely what this is supposed to feel like. What you're undergoing is medically very risky."

He reminds him, brushing his hair back.
