THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

"Idiotic enough to orchestrate a sexual awakening, not quite so idiotic as to orchestrate a bond or breeding. All right, now we've located you on the sliding scale of inappropriate acts to use for political machinations."

Taunting him, softly. Jim just makes it so very easy.

"Try 'masochistic,' but if I had any idea how bloody painful it was going to be I would have thought of something better. You're not so attractive that the mating itself could make it worthwhile."

Easy, perhaps, but taunting was a game Moriarty used to make other people lose their composure, it didn't threaten his own.

"Do you always lash out like this?"

He wants to know, unruffled, holding the water bottle up for him to drink again.

"Only when other people waste my time after I go through serious work to buy it in the first place."

He reached for the bottle with no hesitation or complaint and drank. Pragmatism? Obedience? It would likely be very difficult to sort out, with an Alpha-like brain going through first heat.

"You haven't convinced me to buy what you're selling. You got us here, congratulations, you want to slip Marcus. I don't have the faintest reason to want to help you with that, any reason to believe you'd be able to do it, or fundamentally any reason to do anything other than enjoy the fuck."

He points out, leaning in and giving his ear a not-so-tender nip.

It's an invitation; give him a reason.

Jim sucks in a breath through his teeth and grabs a scant handful of shirt at Khan's shoulder.

"That isn't enticing it bloody hurts, are you trying to derail the conversation when I'm already having trouble?"

He was having trouble, yes, but when Jim turned to press his face against the side of Khan's neck he began to calm.

"Yes," he admits, freely, "because we will be here a long time, and there are always lulls in the heat. We have time to talk."

Chin tucking atop his head.

"What matters more is that we ease you into this safely."

Now that is a pleasant pose. Moriarty lets out a juddering sigh and relaxes into it, even as his body starts twitching again in pain.

"I've been assured that I can't actually die from precipitous sexual maturation, it's been done before. I just... never thought it would be like this."

"A hot bath will help."

He decides, holding him a little closer.

"And a cup of tea, no doubt."

"I thought you would smell sexually attractive. That's not what it is at all. You smell like... the experience of transcending to a higher plane of existence."

Jim brushes a fingertip over the skin just beyond his own nose, imagining the pheromones releasing invisibly.

He noses him, with a low, very Alpha sound of approval. Jim is much more agreeable now that he's not fluttering frantically.

"Are you all right if I step back to get the kettle?"

[moriarty_was_real]

"The kettle?"

He chuckles as he leans back slightly, a way of letting go of someone he wasn't actually holding onto. Oh wait, there's that handful of shirt. Well, Jim might as well let go of that too.

"If this place even has one it's only for decoration."

"Replicator?"

He says, voice soft with complaint. That's much less comforting.

"You must have guessed by now, I am a man out of time."

[moriarty_was_real]

"Maybe that little crack about when children were put on suppressants in YOUR time might have tipped you off?"

Jim pets affectionately on the top of Khan's hair, a gentle but ridiculously patronising gesture for an Omega.

"We say 'putting on some tea.' There are too many different devices used to do it, getting specific just clouds the important issue. You won't find a matter replicator here, actual food is cheap and plentiful here compared to the energy required to synthesize it artificially. The hot water tap will have a red dot on it and there should be dry tea somewhere in the cabinets."

He darts in and nips him, the side of the throat this time, a quick physical command not to get smug, if he knows what's good for him.

"Cream or sugar?"

[moriarty_was_real]

That makes Jim snicker even more even as he twitches away from the bite, oversensitive.

"Just milk if you would, thank you. Even now we only use cream in coff-- "

Jim grit his teeth and hugged himself, curling over slowly as another wave of pain washed over him.

"Yes, I know, I'm an Americanized heathen, laugh away."

He agrees, with the good grace not to comment on the way he suddenly furls like that.

"In a place like this, it's probably your godawful creamer anyways."

The sort that lurks in all the Starfleet labs, poisonous and unrefrigerated and strictly invented to set his hair on end, he feels.

Jim's voice is a bit strangled when he replies.

"Dear God no, I've paid for better than that. You'll probably even find coffee made from actual roasted beans from actual plants grown in actual dirt... "

"Good."

He says, darkly approving. There's a nesting instinct in there somewhere.

"In the morning, then."

[moriarty_was_real]

Nesting instinct? Possibly. That or Moriarty puts an awful lot of value on material luxuries. He breathes in and out a few noisy times to collect himself again.

"Bath might be good." He starts to shrug out of his odd outer suit-tunic.

"Don't move too quickly, you're likely to be a little light headed."

He promises, stepping over to him, moving to help him the rest of the way off with his clothes.

"What does Marcus have over you?"

And possible affront to his pride takes a firm back seat to the desire not to be light headed. Jim cooperates.

"The opposite of what he has on you: information rather than a physical entity."

"Information is harder to control. Are you sure that when he dies, it dies?"

He moves away, to draw him his bath.

"Information is easier to control. It can't be killed, it must be discredited."

Khan's physical distance offers a sort of breathing room, making the physical processes going on in his body less wildly urgent, but he's also more aware of them. It's like being filled with razor blades.

"Discredit, and then explain why you let him use it over you for so long? That's a little more complicated."

Reminding him, as he calls from the other room. He adds a drop of the oil he finds there to the bath.
