THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME

In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely?

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

ROLES:
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed.
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate.

2 - The Beta.
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas.
* Can mate to anyone.
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them.

3 - The Omega.
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup.
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat.
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond.
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won.

SITUATIONS:
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer?

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory.

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking?

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose.

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two?

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

[He stares back at Arthur, his eyes going a little darker-- there are a hundred things he could come back to, each dirtier than the last, and his stomach flips again as he thinks of it. He's not even that dirty, not really-- and it's Arthur, abusive idiotic prat Arthur, Arthur who constantly insults him, who disrespects him, who mostly refuses to admit they're friends--

--friends. Friends. He shouldn't be thinking this about his friend-- but he is, he can't help it, and with each passing second he wants him more and more.]

That's-- that's entirely unfair. I wouldn't do anything that you didn't want. I-- I never do. I'm not nearly as disobedient as you like to paint me out to be.

[ arthur can sense that something is present between them—he'd be daft not to. however, whether or not it was only due to their biology or something deeper, he was still trying to find out.

but it was becoming harder to think. where his brain should be was seemingly hollow—filled with smoke and the scent of his friend. what was rational thought?

it was becoming more and more enticing to just act on instinct. ]

Oh, but you are disobedient. I'd even go as far to say that you're acting against my wants at this very moment.

I-- really.

[His fingers twist around his tunic. It's a stable thing to hold on to, something firm and unwavering; it helps him clear his mind just a little.]

How do you mean?

For one, you're talking.

[ he can't help himself. arthur's voice is low, and when his body urges him to reach out and grab merlin's hands to still them, he doesn't fight the action.

and he's rewarded with the touch of the omega's flesh to his own. ]

Really, Merlin—like you need to deplete the quality of your wardrobe any further.

[And that's it, then. As soon as Arthur touched him, that was it; he was gone. And he's always hated subtlety, it's always irritating and makes him second guess himself, so:]

Come on already. [A beat. A little wryly:] Don't tell me you're normally this hesitant.

[ arthur lets out a laugh which eases into a sigh, and he presses closer to the other boy—his hands leaving merlin's to go to his friend's hips and grip the boy's chin (each appendage doing its own act). his eyes switch between staring at merlin's mouth and looking into his servant's eyes; his whole body was humming with need, completely on edge, and he hoped merlin was feeling the same. ]

Nothing about this situation is normal. [ the side of his mouth cocks upwards in a grin—predatory, a touch unkind. ] Patience is a virtue, my dear idiot. Shall I teach you?

[ arthur knows very little of patience. when he finally leans forward to capture merlin's mouth with his own, it is passionate and fierce—slightly uncomfortable, but he disregards the way his teeth clink against the other boy's. after all, he needed this five minutes ago. ]

[Oh, thank god. Merlin nearly sags against Arthur, overcome with relief-- but right behind it comes lust, hot and fierce, and soon he's surging up into that kiss, returning it inexpertly but enthusiastically.

In the back of his mind-- very distant, but there-- is fondness, too. Because Arthur still knows it's him, is doing this with him. My dear idiot, and he wouldn't say that to anyone else. Perhaps that's applying too much romance to a simple sentence, but Merlin's always been a romantic.]

[ there is admiration on arthur's side as well. he considered merlin his closest friend, before as a beta and even now as an omega. he hid his true ("feminine," he would call them) feelings behind the teasing words he often threw the other boy's way.

he couldn't appear to be going soft—not as the future king of camelot.

the prince forces his tongue into merlin's mouth—deep, demanding (perhaps a bit wetter than need be, but he was inexperienced as well)—and he pushes a leg between his servant's, allowing him to rub against the boy (he needed friction; they both probably did). ]

[And that's it, then. Merlin ruts his hips forward wantonly, his back arching-- friction, yes, perfect, and he doesn't care how desperate this makes him look, how needy-- he is needy, he needs Arthur now, he needs him to take him on the bed or against the wall--

He lets Arthur in his mouth, opening his own eagerly-- but when he pulls back to gasp for breath, he speaks (he can't help speaking, he never can):]

Please, can we-- I want--

[ merlin is… perfect. the boy's scent is amazing and heavy in the air—the body against his is overtly needy and making him increasingly more aroused as the seconds tick by… he was just about ready to rip merlin's pants from his body and flip him around—

but as he'd said just a few moments ago: patience is a virtue. ]

Say it. Tell me what you want. [ he speaks in a harsh whisper against merlin's lips ]

[He might actually faint. That's all he's thinking, dizzyingly; that he might faint and Arthur will never let him forget it if he does.]

You, I want you, you bloody prat, now stop drawing this out--

What did I just say— [ about patience. but he's pulling back from the thinner boy, stepping backwards toward where his bed is situated. ]

Now, come do your job. [ raising his arms—a universal gesture for "undress me." he's trying to make this harder on merlin, though it's also teasing him as well.

it'd be worth it in the end, though. he could just feel it. ]

You're such a bloody prat--

[He scowls up at him-- he knows Arthur is teasing him, he can recognize the little smile on his face-- and ordinarily he'd respond in kind, he'd tease verbally, but not today. Coming forward, he yanks at his shirt, his trousers, tugging them off him as quickly as possible.]

You're as hard as I am, my lord, so I don't know if you should lecture me about patience.

[ arthur smirks the whole time that he's serviced by the omega, even though he's not handled with the seductive touch he… actually hadn't expected from merlin, so that doesn't change anything. he's not even slightly embarrassed by his nakedness once he's fully undressed—he is hard, but—as an alpha—he's not bothered by being on display. ]

I'm not the one who was begging through broken phrases just a moment ago. [ he pulls merlin close by the boy's tunic, then makes quick work of the scarf about his neck. ] Are all omegas this needy? Or is it just you?

I'm not needy. And I wasn't begging.

[He goes to undo his own breeches, but then lets his fingers fall. Let Arthur do it, then, if he's going to be an arse about this.]

I was trying to hurry you up.

[ arthur's smirk sinks into a frown (near-pout, but he'd never admit to pouting) when merlin doesn't continue on to undress his own body. he doesn't know whether or not the boy is stalling for a reason, or if he was implying that he wanted arthur to do the de-clothing.

either way, merlin's inaction is pout-worthy—arthur is not modest, but he does feel a bit silly (without losing his arousal) at being the only one undressed. shedding a scarf does not a naked boy make. ]

I know begging when I hear it, Merlin—and you, sir, were begging.

[ he drops his hands to the smaller boy's hips, fingers moving underneath merlin's shirt to touch fevered skin. his caress is exploratory—invasive. he spends just a moment at the boy's sides before his hands slip farther back, to merlin's rear, where his fingers dip just slightly into the breeches he'd prefer to be pooled on the floor.

they're closer, now. merlin's clothing feels less than comfortable against his naked skin, but arthur presses forward against the boy anyways. ]

I could make you do it again. [ he speaks and his lips are just centimeters from merlin's. every part of his being is yelling at him to just shut up and throw the boy onto his bed, but he still has some sanity left—he's still able to be a prat. once merlin is naked, and all the pheromone-producing areas of his body are exposed, there will be no chance for arthur to form rational thoughts.

the time to play, to have his fun, was now. before he couldn't any longer. ] It suits your voice, you know—desire. Much better than your default whine.

I don't whine.

[His voice is rougher now, breathier, which is a bit girly-- but it's hard to focus on speaking normally when Arthur's just there, naked and in front of him and his hands are on him-- Merlin shudders. He ought to shed his clothes as well; he ought to force Arthur's hand in hurrying up-- but he can't let him win. That's not how their relationship has ever worked.]

And I bet you couldn't. You thought you could make me walk on my knees when we first met--

[And he grins, because the implications of that aren't lost on him.]

--and you haven't.

[ that earns merlin a laugh from arthur, though the boy's words also provoke some thought. there had been a time before their relationship—their camaraderie. and though it had been quite a while since he'd first met merlin, not much had changed between them. behavior-wise, at least. the only changes were subtle—taunts and teases now laced with affection, glances spared for just a bit longer.

without even noticing how it had happened, merlin had become a rather large part of his life. and he actually didn't mind it all that much. ]

If I had known you'd taken my words differently than their original intention, believe me, your kneecaps would consistently display bruises— [ he grins fiercely, his own words turning him on further—creating images in his head that he'd love to see become reality ] —and being eye-level with my waist would be more than a familiar view.

Oh?

[He leans forward, nipping at Arthur's bottom lip, his fingers curling happily around his shoulders.]

Prove it, then. Or do you have other plans for our afternoon together?

[ merlin's actions make arthur feel nervous and excited at the same time, sweeter emotions piercing the lust that predominantly has control of his mind. there was something deeper there—between them—right? illegal for many reasons, yes, but arthur never did fully follow the rules of the kingdom. how many times had he disobeyed uther in the past, and how many more times would he do so in the future?

thoughts for later. he maneuvers them both so that the back of merlin's knees touch his bed, and he uses the flurry of motion to slip his hands further down the back of the other boy's pants. ]

All I can think about is having you. [ his voice is a murmur. they're so close, and as they become even more so, he continues to lose control of himself. ] There will be time, later, to prove that kneeling before me is second nature to you. [ he breathes, hot and heavy, against merlin's mouth—his fingertips digging into the flesh just above the boy's ass. ] I hope you're not disappointed.

I can't think why I would be.

[He squirms, pushing against that grip eagerly. He's never had anything like this, anyone like this, to touch him and look at him and speak to him with such desire-- it's enough to make him shudder. Merlin leans up again, kissing Arthur-- a light kiss, only it grows hungrier as he loses himself in it.]

We should get on the bed. We should-- come on--

[ the kiss is arthur's undoing, and some part of him thinks that merlin knew it would be. he'd make a comment if lips and and a heat-filled mouth weren't so completely distracting when pressed to his own. he only manages to sneak in the slightest bit of tongue—to taste, to tease himself—before merlin's parted from him to speak.

but they're important words, he has to acknowledge. ]

I give the orders— [ a brief kiss as he begins to maneuver merlin up onto the bed by his grip on the boy's ass (which moves to his hips—better leverage) ] —me— [ another kiss, and he wastes no time moving so that he's above the boy, his hands now working at merlin's breeches ] —you submit!

Do I?

[It's a clear challenge, and one Merlin has no doubt he'll enjoy losing. Smirking up at Arthur, he wriggles his hips a little, helping him get his breeches off, trying not to let him know just how hard his heart is pounding.]

I don't know, Arthur, I've heard of alphas submitting to omegas before.

[ arthur nearly growls—the sound closer to a groan (partially annoyed, partially aroused)—in response to merlin's words, and his treatment of the boy's clothing becomes a whole lot rougher. soon merlin is de-pantsed though, and arthur presses his hips closer, allowing him to wrap his hand about both of them—stroking and rutting fervently (with a touch of inexperience that he hopes can't be detected) ]

Merlin? [ strained, but it's come to this. you know what he's going to tell you to do, because it seems he has to ask this question every single day.

the boy just didn't learn. there were times for talking, and there were times for using one's mouth for other—better—things. ]
