The glory of Rome! The pageantry of medieval times! The etiquette of the Regency era! The glamour of the twenties, the free-wheeling of the seventies, and - of course - the final frontier of the future.
( and everybody else here not sitting on a cushion! ) They showed you kindness, perhaps in a way you'd never seen before, perhaps in a way you can never repay. But you're trying; in exchange, you're offering your loyalty, for how much or how little that's worth. For them, you'd do anything: you'd fight, you'd protect, you'd be their right hand or their biggest advocate, if they needed it and you can offer it. As long as you get to stay by their side, it doesn't matter. So, you certainly don't have to worry about your bond surpassing what you have now or becoming romantic, do you? That will just get in your way of being there for them. Since you've only got their best interest at heart, it won't bother you if someone else were to pursue them... ...right? As long as you get to stay by their side. As long as you get to fight for them. As long as they need you.

 It's fairly simple, really, no royalty required. One of you is the "princess:" sweet, gentle, possibly energetic, always full of life and innocence. The other is the "knight:" stoic, or at least serious about protecting that one special person, dedicated, strong, a fighter. And the two of you are in love, even if one...less expressive than the other. Together romantically or not, there's something that connects you, most likely a driving need to protect. But don't let the normal conventions full you, the "princess" (or "prince," as it may be, because the terms here are gender neutral) is just as important. Someone has look to the emotional well-being and happiness of the "knight," and often, those "knights" need a lot of help.

| Because is there anything better than a dangerous, potentially deadly stoic whose one weakness is their sweet, harmless object of affection? Especially if the latter has the former wrapped around their finger, knowingly or otherwise. To avoid tl;dr - suddenly, a wild bae approaches! Their attempt to turn you into a puddle of goo at the knees, whether purposeful or not, is very effective.
