[She smiled.] I'm glad. I just wish I could do more.

He-ey, every little bit counts! That's just one more plastic bag kept out of a sea turtle's stomach, one more six pack ring kept off the necks of diving shorebirds.

[She smiles and nods.] I'm...happy to help.

So am I. -Uh, we. The ocean.

[Throat-clearing.]

[She smiled, but awkwardness comes with the silence that follows, and she rubs her arm. Really, she should have so many questions, because - honestly, a merman! It was incredible just to know they existed, let alone get to talk to one! She should be asking him everything.

But her perpetual shyness was hard to overcome, even in the face of something as special as this, and she's just looking for something to say.]

S-So...wh...wh-why are you here? I-I mean, why did you...not that you're not welcome to, y-you're allowed to swim freely of course! I just...

[This is why she doesn't talk to strangers.]

Me? Here? Oh, I was just... swimmin' through. [He made a little "wavey" motion with both his hands, while the tail splooshed back underneath to support him, waving lazily.]

I come to this beach kinda often, actually. Or pass the shoreline anyway. Never took the time to stop and talk to anybody...

[She sits on one of the rocks.] So why was today any different?

[He blinked, then laughed gently.] Even though the "alluring song" thing generally goes in the other direction.

[She giggled softly.] I did wonder about that...

So does that mean you sing? May I hear?

[It was his turn to flush, and he chuckled a little, nervous.]

N-no, that's alright. I'm not very... It's just the girls that-... I... ...Maybe later?

O-Oh, I'm sorry...I didn't mean to embarrass you...

[She really did want to hear him sing. But she wouldn't push it.]

For humans, maybe. [Not that he has much of a yardstick to go off of.] For merpeople, nnnnotsomuch.

Really? So are all merpeople supposed to sing really well?

In general, yeah. The whole "luring ships to their death" thing is a myth, at least for those of us with any decent morals, but most merpeople can at least carry a tune. Call it a species trait.

If we can't sing there's no big deal, since only a select few make it a profession, but. [He chuckled and shrugged.] I'd still like to be able to, someday.

I'm sure you will someday. You can always learn, right?

Yeah, there's always that. [Being able to sit still long enough to learn however, that could be an issue.]

You should ask someone to teach you. Sometimes it's easier to learn that way.

Well, I'd have to find a willing teacher, first...

[There's the spark of an idea, and then he leeeeaaannnnsss on his hand, giving her a knowing grin.]

She gets it eventually, though she has some trouble believing it.]

[He chuckles and gives her a friendlier smile.]

If you're willing to? I'm not asking you to do it for free either, we'd just have to find my end of the bargain.

[Then his smile turns a little unsure.] But if you've got... obligations or other things you'd rather be doing, I understand...

A-Ah...w-well, I...I-I don't mind, I...d-do have time. I-I just...I'm not sure if I-I'd...be a...g-good teacher...
