HOW IT WORKS:

[He blinked, then smiled.]

[She smiled, giggling softly.] Okay. So it's a deal then.

[She smiles and, as the curiosity finally starts to burn, she glances back towards his tail.]

S-So...what's it like? Where you're from, I mean...

Oh, it's pretty nice. Kinda like what you get if you blended dolphin pods and fish schools.

[He chuckled a bit.] There's some hubs, where there's places like shops and entertainment, but for the most part a lot of merpeople travel through territories in clans.

Oh really? So how far do merpeople's territories extend? Do you ever interact with other clans?

They extend pretty far, but it's a peaceful existence. Plenty of room to swim around, and most are pretty good about maintaining their borders and what cities there are.

Clans intermingle, since for one thing that spreads genetics around. [He snickered softly.] And the oceans are so different, even the SAME ocean is different from one end to the other. It keeps resources vibrant and fresh.

Oh wow. That sounds really exciting!

You mentioned entertainment places. What kind of things do merpeople do for fun?

Well, concerts might be a foregone conclusion. [He laughed.] You may know that sound travels best underwater, so any kind of music or performance is welcome.

Contests and sports are fairly common too, especially races between the different types. And storytelling is also popular, with some merpeople dedicating their lives to memorizing and spreading lore.

What kinds of types of merpeople are there?

Oh, almost too many to count! There's as many kinds of merpeople as there are fish in the sea.

Gosh! That's amazing...

Oh! Do you talk to sea creatures?

Sort of, yeah. We can learn creature language, though it's not exactly what you'd call conventional speaking. Kinda more like... an exchange of signals, postures, and sounds.

[He snickered.] Unless they're dolphins or other cetaceans. Especially dolphins. A little more language-esque there.

Oh my gosh! That's so exciting!

[She seems almost as giddy about this as she was about learning of merpeople in the first place.]

[He giggled, her enthusiasm catching.]

Really?

Oh yes! It must be so fascinating to get to talk to the creatures! I wish I could...

[He thought a few moments, then looked up.]

Well, I might be able to teach you a little?

Really?

[So excited.]

I could try! You're being really nice by teaching me better singing. I bet I could try teaching you dolphinese.

[That was the most language-like one out there, after all.]

Oh wow! That's be wonderful!

Okay! We've got a deal, then~

All right! Gosh, this is so exciting!

[He chuckled warmly, and for a moment there's a rather certain grin on his face.

He pushes off from the boulder and raises his arms above his head, submerging back under the water. There's no sign of him for a few moments and then, several yards out Chris resurfaces, leaping high into the air. He turns a circle, the sheer fins sparkling as seawater flies off them. A short time after splashdown he comes back up to his original spot, looking at her with the same grin.]

[Her eyes widen, and she gasps as he jumps from the water.

When he returns, she is positively radiating excitement.]

Oh wow! That was incredible!
