Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

All of his attention was reserved for Leia, so he didn't even react when the soldiers left. Her mention of his Guide sharpened his gaze. "He died," Anakin spat as objects in the room began to tremble ominously. "I watched him fall after our men shot him!"

Of course, it was possible Obi-Wan had survived but Anakin had never been very good at that sort of perspective and the fact that he couldn't sense his mentor here and now wasn't lending much credence to that thought anyway.

Well damn, that was a much less than ideal situation. But that didn't mean she was going to have a localized Force-storm in her office.

"Calm." It wasn't an order, not really, she wasn't pushing to overpower him, mostly because that was incredibly rude for a Guide to try on a Sentinel they'd just met, except in an emergency, and this wasn't yet an emergency.

But at the same time there was more than a little of the Force behind it, and every ounce of her bearing as both General and Princess, drawing up to her full height and still entirely calm herself as she added: "If they think I'm being attacked, they're going to send in a cadre of the guard, and I'd rather not waste the resources, if it's all the same to you."

She did offer both hands, then, palms up, "I'd like to help you, if you'll let me."

She likely didn't want to have that battle of wills, anyway.

Of course, if anyone was going to manage it with him, it was likely to be the daughter who inherited far more of his stubbornness (and Padme's) and strength of resolve than any one person should ever have.

And it was that sense of her in the Force, that sense of connection, that helped distract him for a moment from his grief. He didn't reach out to touch her but he did look at her as if truly seeing her for the first time. "You remind me of someone-..."

She didn't retract the offered hands, not yet, because he might yet need the touch to settle himself.

"That... that's a long story. One that can wait a while yet. The shortest, simplest explanation for now is that you're much, much further away from where you were than you think."

She shook her head, "I don't know how, I doubt anyone living does, but you've managed to travel to the future." She didn't know yet that he was also from another timeline, where things could have gone differently.

She hadn't retreated and she was so close. He could practically feel the sensation, the promise of relief, and all he had to do was accept it. Ordinarily, he would never respond to a stranger but this wasn't an ordinary situation. And he couldn't help the insistent feeling that she wasn't a stranger. Not exactly. As he closed his hands around hers, it occurred to him finally that what he was seeing was Padme looking up at him, hearing echoes in her voice.

Maybe she would forgive his grip suddenly tightening as she finished speaking. "....the future...? That's a terrible joke."

There was still strength enough in her own hands that she didn't mind that reflexive tightening of his grasp, gently steering him towards a low bench seat by the window, better to settle there than to try sitting on opposite sides of her desk, "It would be a terrible, terrible joke, if it weren't true."

Her brow furrowed, trying to figure out how to explain, finally shaking her head, "I don't know how, though I have my suspicions about why, or at least why here as opposed to just the future and yet still on Utapau." Not that the two planets were so far distant from each other, as these things went.

"It's because we're related, you and I." She was watching his expression closely, not at all sure how that would go over, though suspecting with about the same level of belief as 'yes this is the future' had.

He let himself be steered, the problem he's being presented with just another thing that helped to give him some stability, oddly enough. A puzzle he could grasp, even if it was something so ridiculous. He was even willing to accept that her claim was just how she'd decided to handle the problem he presented her.

"Related?" He shook his head, "I don't have any-..." it's force of habit to keep the secret, but he fumbled the excuse anyway, "family."

Except that wasn't entirely true. Padme had told him just before Utapau--how could he have forgotten??--that he was going to be a father.

Once again, he looked at Leia, then down at their joined hands. "What's your name?"

There was a barely-suppressed smile at that excuse, it was comfortable enough, she could tell, that it had been used before, though it was also patently untrue and she was the proof of that, not that he knew it.

"Leia Organa, house Organa, Alderan." Her smile emerged then, serene as ever, giving his hands a gentle squeeze, still seeping calm, still just trying to settle him but not overpower him, "Though I was adopted into the family, a sister for Bail and Breha's daughter."

"Organa, huh?" He glanced back in the direction the soldiers had left, then raised his eyebrows at her. "Didn't think Alderaanians went in for the military thing."

Then he paused.

"Adopted by Bail and Breha?" Either she was truly committed to this you're in the future thing or she actually was telling the truth. He wasn't sure which idea he preferred.

She nodded once, "Yes, adopted, it was... it was for the best." The sad smile followed, quiet and wistful, "And traditionally, no, even the royal guard was mostly ceremonial, but even the most peaceful of peoples know that sometimes a fight is necessary."

For most of them that knowledge had come too late, but she was even less sure how to broach that subject, or even if she'd be able to, because for as long ago as it had been, some days she still felt that loss as keenly as she had standing on the deck of that Star Destroyer.

He thought of the things he'd seen Bail do, when necessary, of what Padme could do. Even a committed pacifist like the Duchess Satine hadn't backed down from a fight if there were no other option. So he nodded. "He's not so bad in a fight, Senator Organa."

Not who Anakin would prefer to be backing him up, but not completely incapable.

"But you're saying you're adopted because..." he hovered over the admission. Over even suggesting what he thought she was implying about their relationship.

Over the idea that if she'd had to have been adopted, he and Padme must not have survived whatever he'd fallen out of. He tried to suppress the fear that rose up in him--more that he'd not only failed Obi-Wan but that he might have failed Padme too, not so much for himself--but joined as they are, there's no way Leia can't sense it.

She definitely could, and so her fingers gripped his all the more tightly for a moment, "Because it was safer for the Empire not to know that I existed." Her brow creased, trying to sort the words into the right order to explain, "After the purge, the Jedi that got away were hunted down, and then the hedgewitches and shamans, and down to anyone with as much as a sliver of Force-sensitivity."

She inclined her head a little, "So as you can imagine, the children of Jedi, or any other Force-users, would likely best be hidden. I didn't even know about my own potential until I was... twenty? Give or take."

"The-...Purge?" He looked at her in growing (if blunted by her presence) horror. "You mean it wasn't us?"

Not that he could yet truly imagine what would have caused their own men, men they'd fought beside for three years, men he'd trusted with his life more than once to suddenly turn on them as they'd done. But all of the Jedi?

"That's crazy."

He didn't even know what to do with the Empire comment yet.

"Yes." She agreed with a nod, "It is. But that's what happened. And no, it wasn't just your group, it was something hardwired into the clones, an order." Not much was known about it even still, there had been few enough survivors and the stories had gotten muddled over time, "I'm afraid that's all I know about it."

Despite her own well-rooted confusion over the current situation, she was still managing to maintain that same level of calm, though that was likely due to decades of practice in dealing with senate hearings than it was to anything else.

His head was spinning at this information and the urge to get up and do something about it was strong. Except. If she was right, it was already done and there was nothing he could do. He didn't even know how to go back or how he'd gotten here in the first place. Under normal circumstances, he probably would have been pacing right about now, unable to contain the energy he could do nothing with. Obi-Wan had despaired of ever getting him to properly meditate even with his help. "I can't believe this," he said finally, wilting a little, "it doesn't make any sense."

Leia, also, was known for pacing when stressed, or just when she was trying to work something out, un-puzzle something that was being a problem. For now, though, she stayed still, still resonating calm because that was all she could do to help the situation.

"It doesn't, no, and it's a lot to try to take in at one time, I understand, and I apologize for throwing it at you all at once, but I thought that might be preferable to finding out later and thinking we'd tried to hide the information on purpose."

He gave her a sidelong look, "well. You're not wrong."

It certainly would have eroded any trust she might have been able to establish between their meeting and that hypothetical future revelation.

"What now?"

"Well, now I put out a call to some contacts I haven't needed to use in years and see if we can't find someone who can explain this and how to get you home."

She tilted her head then, some kind of acquiescence, "And if not, at least find any way we can to help you settle in the here and now."

"Contacts you haven't needed to use in years?" That sounded like a story.

After a second's hesitation, he carefully moved to tug his hand from hers, feeling at least stable enough for the present that clinging to her (~~despite their implied relationship~~) was starting to feel a little awkward. "I can't stay here. I have to go back and..." he flexed his gloved hand, just thinking about the magnitude of what awaited him in the past, "...fix this. Somehow."

He had to find Obi-Wan. He had to make sure Padme was safe. She was safe, right?

She let him go easily enough, just folding her hands in her lap, nodding at the question, "Maz Kanata mostly, but also the Creche if they can be reached, a handful of others who have more history and more experience with the ways of the Force than I do."

Someone, somewhere, would know if this sort of thing had happened before and how to reverse it. At least in theory. But even she would admit that she didn't know everything, and the galaxy was a large, varied place, it was entirely possible that this was the first time something like this had happened, because she certainly couldn't explain it.

Maz's name just rolls off him as it rang no bells but, "the Creche?"

Then again, really the only association he had for that was the Temple's creche for younglings. "The Creche for what?"

"They once guarded the Egg of the Savior." She shook her head, "One of the odd, offshoot sects, but they were harmless enough, and they carry a history. Though now that the Savior has hatched, they may be unreachable, I'm not sure, I suppose I'll find out when I reach out to them."

Truthfully Maz was probably going to be the best resource, but given as how she had a business to relocate or be rebuilt, she might not be readily available, either.

"That sounds like a story." He waved a hand around, as if to indicate the war they've been fighting. "Savior not live up to expectation?"

Maybe they had that in common, he thought ruefully.

"Not so far as I know, though I do only know parts of it, secondhand." She replied, "The way I hear it they were all winged away to salvation, which is why they may be difficult to contact." Not impossible, according to all reports, they were still on the same planet, but no longer living underground and protecting their unborn savior.

Anakin raised his eyebrows. "Winged away to salvation?" His skepticism is obviously more than evident. It sounds too much like stories he used to hear on Tatooine from some of the other slaves. Those hadn't come true either.

"I guess it's no weirder than anything else here."
