Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

She gave a small smile at that, head dipping, not quite sheepish, but still unused to that compliment even after this long. The expression was definitely one she'd gotten from him instead of her mother, though that was rather beside the point.

"So I've been told. Sometimes I can almost see it myself." It was different, coming from him, than it was coming from anyone else, however, she could actually believe it coming from him.

He reached out hesitantly, not quite touching her. "Something about the shape of your mouth, I think. Around the eyes. And-" he gestured a little, amusement lighting his features, "you share a penchant for complicated hairstyles."

Then he leaned back once more, "but there's something in your mannerisms too, how you carry yourself. The way you tilt your head sometimes. Holo-images probably didn't show that sort of thing well."

"No, they don't, not really." She knew she'd also picked up more than her share of mannerisms from Bail as well, but there was something comforting -even now- in knowing that some of them had been inherited.

The smile returned, along with a quiet huff of a laugh, "And the hair, I suspect is more due to location than anything. I can't say much about Naboo, I only ever visited, but Alderaanian culture and even status was more often linked to the intricacy of hairstyles less than textiles and clothing."

"On Naboo I think they just try to make everything beautiful."

Even the most mundane of buildings had architectural flourishes one wouldn't see elsewhere.

Anakin can only imagine that if Padme had been the Jedi, her lightsaber would be all flowing lines and grace. Somehow.

"That's possible as well. I remember everything fit together like a puzzle ball, even with the decorative curls everything fit right where it was supposed to, very little wasted space, if any at all."

It was something that had impressed her even then, because it wasn't something she'd seen much of.

"Not like Coruscant...even if you could say it's so crammed with people and buildings that it's impossible to waste space there."

Then again, you had places like the Jedi Temple that were quite airy and open. Probably there were beings in the lower levels of the planet that found it rather wasteful. It was definitely grandiose.

"I haven't been to Coruscant since I was young, but it seemed more like things were put in wherever there was a gap for them, and sometimes not even then. Just stacked on top of each other if there was air space or room between one building and the next."

It was similar in being like a puzzle-ball, but one that was unsolvable due to extra pieces or broken ones, or maybe a little of both.

"Well," he says as he glances at the instrument panel for a moment, "guess you'll be seeing it again soon enough. Probably a little worse for wear."

There had just been a giant space battle fought above it after all.

He's just not fully aware of how bad it looks on the ground yet, despite what he's been told.

She made a thoughtful sound at that, nodding, "And well before I've already seen it. Which is something I'm trying not to think too hard about."

It was quite possible that that battle damage was what had caused some of the tangle she'd seen, but she supposed that was something she'd find out soon enough as well.

Anakin snorted as they dropped hyperspace, Coruscant suddenly filling the viewport. "Yeah, I know the feeling."

Since he'd tried so hard not to think about...a lot of the implications about his presence in her future and her presence with him now.

She was already fully aware of just how careful she was going to have to be, hoping against hope that she didn't inadvertently change anything simply by being there. But it was also something she couldn't let herself worry about too much or she wouldn't do anything at all, which was incredibly counterproductive, all things considered.

So she nodded once, mostly just to pull herself together, "Alright. Let's get this over with."

The battle of Coruscant being still so recent, there was still plenty of evidence of the number of ships caught up in it in orbit around the planet. Many were just hulks that would have to be salvaged for scrap but more than a few appeared to be the precursors to the Star Destroyers Leia is more familiar with set up in a defensive perimeter around the planet. Somehow (the Force was with them still?) they managed to slip by without being challenged for clearance though Anakin was obviously preoccupied enough to not notice how unusual that was. Then again, he had also spent the last several years as a general in an army that didn't tend to question his direction.

As they near the planet's surface, Anakin's preoccupation seemed to increase as he was torn between going straight to find Padme and taking Leia to the Temple for that artifact search.

Or to deal with Palpatine, that thought was in there as well.

He ended up looking over at her, hoping for some direction...and maybe that's a hint for her as to how Palpatine had managed to lead her father toward the Dark Side. In so many ways, he's always deferred to authority figures, as much as he might have also chafed against their restraints. "If they're truly attacking the Jedi I don't know what we're going to find at the Temple...though I do know some ways in that nobody else probably does any more." He'd spent a lot of time sneaking out of it as a kid.

He shifted in his seat, "I don't think they'd have done anything to the senators?" By which he really meant Padme, of course.

"It's doubtful that they have." She replied, "Because at this stage they still want everyone to believe, even despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that they're the ones being reasonable."

That, at least, was something she remembered, or at least remembered Bail's occasional rant about it, not that he was a man prone to ranting in general, but he'd done his best to teach her what had happened so that it wouldn't happen again if she had any influence in the matter.

At that, he relaxed a hair and turned them in the direction of the Temple though as they approached it they'd see smoke staining the sky around it.

"Reasonable," Anakin said, sneering. "Right."

They don't get too much closer to the great building before he took them lower, heading deeper into Coruscant's lower levels. They'd have to leave the ship and find a smaller vehicle eventually, but at least this made it a little easier to approach undetected.

"I'd ask if you wanted to wait with the ship but I think I know the answer."

"Oh you know exactly what the answer to that would be." She replied, one brow lifting.

She shook her head a moment later, "And I didn't say that they were actually being reasonable, just that they want people to see it that way." She was definitely taking stock of things, the location and state of any buildings she recognized just to use as some kind of compass.

That comment at least prompted a quick smile before he set the ship down.

Anakin half-expected the ship wouldn't be there when they returned but they probably needed to find something more powerful anyway.

Which was something else they could likely find at the Temple, even if it would get the attention of everyone in the sector.

"Well," he said, standing, "you ready?"

She nodded even as she unfolded from her own seat, "As ready as can be expected, given the circumstances." She replied, debating just for a moment before asking: "Should I bring the rifle?"

She only knew the historical perspective, and while that made it seem like a good idea, she couldn't be completely sure.

Anakin frowned, thinking about that. They really didn't know what to expect though at least down here people might not look too closely at a civilian carrying a gun. He hoped.

"Better bring it," he said after a moment. "Would hate to need it and not have it."

She nodded, picking it up and shouldering it easily with the strap, "Alright, now I'm ready."

For the most part she was doing her best to keep her thoughts in the present moment, mostly because there was no use worrying about what might happen, and it was better to use that energy to focus on her present surroundings, keep alert to any potential threats.

Really it was a habit she'd learned some time ago, even before she'd become a senator herself, though only just.

The trip heading toward the Temple through these under-streets of Coruscant was easier than expected. But then, at this point most people were just trying to keep their heads down and not be noticed while Palpatine solidified his power as emperor and clone troopers went from being a mostly-tolerated presence there to protect them from outside forces to a somewhat feared presence there to take down anyone who would stand in Palpatine's way.

They'd sacked the Jedi Temple, after all, and the vaunted Jedi hadn't been able to save themselves. What did that mean for the rest of them?

So few people wanted to give the tall shadow stalking through the streets or his companion with a rather large gun a second look. Better not to get drawn in. And the clone troopers hadn't quite penetrated to this level yet...at least until they actually got close to the Temple's base.

Anakin drew up to a halt as he spotted a couple of figures loitering near a little-used service entrance to the Temple, putting his hand out to stop Leia from any more forward movement and then moving them both to the side out of sight. "They're wearing Jedi cloaks," Anakin murmured, "but they're definitely no Jedi." He hadn't needed the Force for that. Not when they were so conspicuously waiting. Not when he could clearly see the bottom of their standard-issue boots even from so far away sticking out from under the hem of their cloaks.

"We'll have to use another way it." He paused. "It'll be a tight fit."

Mostly for him. He hasn't tried crawling into the Temple via one of the refuse chutes since he was a kid but he was pretty sure he could squeeze through.

It had likewise been a while since Leia had used a garbage chute for anything other than, well, garbage, which meant that she was a little out of practice at that kind of climb, but she wasn't about to let that stop her, either.

"I'm sure I've had worse." She replied, brow arching again, waiting for the explanation, because while the momentary thought of just shooting their way in seemed like a good one, she knew it really wasn't and wouldn't have been at any other time, either.

"We could go straight through them," he said. "But it's not like they're going to be the only troopers here."

And while he wasn't necessarily too concerned about how he'd fare in that fight, he wasn't certain it was one he wanted to drag Leia into no matter how much fighting experience she had.

"But up that way a bit," he nodded further along the Temple, meaning just around the corner, "there's a trash chute. I used to use it to get out sometimes." The rest of that story could come later, probably. "It leads up to one of the refectories."

Her expression was almost a smile, it would have been if the situation were any less life or death, because apparently that was something else that was genetic, or at least close enough to it, "I used to get out of the statehouse through the garden aqueducts, they hadn't been in use in years, at least not for water. I think we'll manage."

She wasn't as limber as she'd once been and she knew it, but she was spry enough for something like this.

He looked back at her with a not-quite-smile of his own. "Good. Let's get going, then."

Though when they finally sidled around out of sight of the troopers and made their way to the chute in question, Anakin had to look up at it a little dubiously. "Well, at least we know if I end up fitting you'll definitely fit."

"That is one of the advantages to my ...particular stature." She agreed with a nod and something that was closer to a smile than the last expression had been.

"Lead the way, I'll follow after a count of ten." Mostly just to make sure he was clear enough that they wouldn't end up colliding, but also to make sure that he could actually get through. It would also give her a chance to wind the blaster's strap around her leg to pull it up after her instead of trying to wrangle it against her chest.
