Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

"Not really. I never had to open them." And he'd learned how to get around a lot of the Temple's secrets but this hadn't been one of them. "The doors are built heavily enough to withstand someone cutting through with a lightsaber. It's probably going to take both of us using the Force."

The Jedi liked the idea of having two for all these kinds of things. The Sith too, if one thought about it.

"Can you do that?"

She nodded even as she answered: "Yes. I'm a little out of practice, but I catch on quick."

she was a little surprised to find that she meant it, and that she was going to apologize to her brother when she got back to her own time. She had spent decades unable to forgive Vader, or even to acknowledge who he was, or had been, and now?

Well now she was about to do what amounted to breaking and entering and some kind of petty theft with the man who would -presumably- be her father.

Is it really theft if he's a Jedi taking a Jedi artifact from the Jedi Temple? In a way couldn't it be considered artifact preservation considering what is to come for this place?

Anakin was very good at justifying that weren't strictly the right thing to do. Though in this case he had no qualms at all.

"Okay," he said, "let's do this before anyone else shows up."

Since she said she got the idea he was going to give her the benefit of the doubt and raise his hand toward the door, inspecting it with the Force and feeling out what he was going to have to do to pull it free. Opening himself to the Force there in the middle of the Temple also opened him to the painful echoes of all the death around them but he just gritted his teeth against it and powered through.

If Leia took note in the Force she might sense the great mantle of power he carried but more concerning would be the Darkness seeking to surround him and slip past his currently rather shaky defenses. Despite what he'd learned from what she'd told him, it was obvious he was still in danger.

Just as well they only had clones to worry about and not Palpatine as well.

That was probably the exact same reasoning she'd use later, once she was home. And she had to believe that it was going to happen, she'd get home, history wouldn't be unmade and everything would turn out alright in the end because that was how the universe -and as far as she was concerned the Force itself- worked.

She was definitely aware of the weight of that shadow, as well, though there wasn't much she could do about it except to be there, for now. It wasn't long before the workings of the door became clear and she stepped closer. The inner latch didn't match any of the outer latches, which seemed to be purely decorative, but she tapped lightly at the door, just offset from one of them, "Here. There's a counterweight, but it's not the only one."

"Alright," he sayid a little distantly. "It's a start."

It wasn't easy, not knowing what to look for from the outset, but with Leia there to help him they eventually got the doors open enough to slip through and into the room beyond.

While there were no lights turned on within, and Anakin didn't bother fumbling around for a switch, the room was still lit with a gentle blue glow that provided just enough illumination to see by once their eyes adjusted.

Well, more than enough illumination for a Sentinel but Leia could likely get by well enough.

Most of the holocrons lining the shelves of the room were simple cubes in shape, though there were some icosahedrons and octahedrons here and there to be seen. Many appeared to be quite old. "Here we are," Anakin said, "thousands of years of Jedi history and lore all in one spot." He looked over at Leia, "do you know how they work?"

There was definitely enough light for her to see by, though the sheer number of holocrons there -and thereby realizing how many there were that had been lost or destroyed by her time- was enough to throw her off-balance, just a little, a quiet: "They're beautiful." Slipping past her lips before she registered what he was saying.

She nodded at the question, "I've got the general idea, I've... never actually seen one in person before." Let alone that many, though that went without saying, and mostly she was hoping that she wouldn't actually have to operate it to get home, that holding it would be enough and she could worry about who and what it was later.

"No?" he frowned at that. Another reminder of what would be lost. It might be better, he thought to himself, for Leia to take more than just one. For safekeeping.

"They only respond to someone who can use the Force. I guess they're a little like that door. You can figure out how to open it with a little nudge. After that...?" Anakin shrugged a little. "They can hold all kinds of information and a lot of it but they won't just give it all away. I'm told there are holocrons, especially the really old ones, that even some of the Masters don't know what all is in there. Some things just stay locked until you figure out the right way to ask for it." Or until the holocron decided you were ready. There was more mysticism in that than mechanics so Anakin still didn't quite understand how that part actually worked but he'd seen it in practice enough.

She nodded, "Yes, less like a holorecording and more like a... an entire interactive museum, I think, not just a single exhibit." Though she knew that depended on the complexity of the Holocron itself and what the Jedi who'd made it had intended.

Following the flow of things was something she'd always been good at, and now was no exception, brow creasing just a little as she stepped forward studying the nearest rack, fingers twitching just a little. She knew she didn't have a whole lot of time to decide, but also knew that rushing a decision like this could be worse.

"The analogy works," he agreed as she moved toward the waiting holocrons.

While he waited, he kept half his attention on anything that might be approaching them from the outside and the rest on her.

Waiting, unfortunately, gave him too much time to think about what he'd seen in the future and what he'd seen here. Not to mention what he now knew about the woman before him. Would the future she returns to be different? Would nothing have changed?

Could he change it? Did he even know how, really? Everyone always talked about destiny with him. Was seeing the future a chance to change what would come or a reminder that he had no choice?

The thoughts just circled around on themselves until he started pacing around as well...a little like a caged animal.

It probably wasn't helping her concentration.

It wasn't, not really, but she'd had years of practice compartmentalizing that kind of distraction while she was working on something else, she'd been good at it in her teens, and had only gotten better at it with age, and while she was tracking what she could of that coiling emotional state, she was still following the threads of ...well she wasn't really sure, she'd always referred to them as 'history', eddies in the Force as to what had been important in the past, or might become important in the future.

"This one." She finally said, fingers hovering over a pyramid-shaped holocron on a second shelf.

Anakin's footsteps behind her paused as he looked up to see which holocron she'd chosen before moving up to stand beside her. Impulsively, he reached for another on a different shelf. He didn't know precisely what it contained but it felt important. "You should take two. Just to be sure. Maybe give it to your friend in exchange for what she gave me."

Even if the artifact that had gotten him here wasn't particularly useful anymore.

She smiled at that, she'd honestly been thinking the same, but hadn't been sure how to say so, and hadn't wanted to touch any of them just yet, knowing that everything was going to change as soon as she did.

At least, that was what she was hoping would happen.

So she shifted, just a little, holding the pocket of her jacket open so that he could slip the second holocron into it, hand still just above the one she'd picked, not touching it yet as she studied Anakin once more.

"He survived, where I'm from. When I'm from, Obi-Wan did. I can only hope it's the same for you here and now." Because she could guess at what was going to happen as soon as she was gone, especially with the turmoil she already knew was there, under the surface.

Carefully, he settled the second holocron in her open pocket and hoped he'd chosen well. It'd be nice to get at least one thing right.

Her words kept him from stepping back once that was completed. "Then..." he said after a moment, "I'll have to find him." After he made sure Padme was safe. But she wasn't a Jedi, surely she was fine? He'd been managing to hold to that idea for the time being, anyway but once Leia was gone there'd be nothing stopping him from tearing off to make absolutely certain.
