Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

She definitely could, and so her fingers gripped his all the more tightly for a moment, "Because it was safer for the Empire not to know that I existed." Her brow creased, trying to sort the words into the right order to explain, "After the purge, the Jedi that got away were hunted down, and then the hedgewitches and shamans, and down to anyone with as much as a sliver of Force-sensitivity."

She inclined her head a little, "So as you can imagine, the children of Jedi, or any other Force-users, would likely best be hidden. I didn't even know about my own potential until I was... twenty? Give or take."

"The-...Purge?" He looked at her in growing (if blunted by her presence) horror. "You mean it wasn't us?"

Not that he could yet truly imagine what would have caused their own men, men they'd fought beside for three years, men he'd trusted with his life more than once to suddenly turn on them as they'd done. But all of the Jedi?

"That's crazy."

He didn't even know what to do with the Empire comment yet.

"Yes." She agreed with a nod, "It is. But that's what happened. And no, it wasn't just your group, it was something hardwired into the clones, an order." Not much was known about it even still, there had been few enough survivors and the stories had gotten muddled over time, "I'm afraid that's all I know about it."

Despite her own well-rooted confusion over the current situation, she was still managing to maintain that same level of calm, though that was likely due to decades of practice in dealing with senate hearings than it was to anything else.

His head was spinning at this information and the urge to get up and do something about it was strong. Except. If she was right, it was already done and there was nothing he could do. He didn't even know how to go back or how he'd gotten here in the first place. Under normal circumstances, he probably would have been pacing right about now, unable to contain the energy he could do nothing with. Obi-Wan had despaired of ever getting him to properly meditate even with his help. "I can't believe this," he said finally, wilting a little, "it doesn't make any sense."

Leia, also, was known for pacing when stressed, or just when she was trying to work something out, un-puzzle something that was being a problem. For now, though, she stayed still, still resonating calm because that was all she could do to help the situation.

"It doesn't, no, and it's a lot to try to take in at one time, I understand, and I apologize for throwing it at you all at once, but I thought that might be preferable to finding out later and thinking we'd tried to hide the information on purpose."

He gave her a sidelong look, "well. You're not wrong."

It certainly would have eroded any trust she might have been able to establish between their meeting and that hypothetical future revelation.

"What now?"

"Well, now I put out a call to some contacts I haven't needed to use in years and see if we can't find someone who can explain this and how to get you home."

She tilted her head then, some kind of acquiescence, "And if not, at least find any way we can to help you settle in the here and now."

"Contacts you haven't needed to use in years?" That sounded like a story.

After a second's hesitation, he carefully moved to tug his hand from hers, feeling at least stable enough for the present that clinging to her (~~despite their implied relationship~~) was starting to feel a little awkward. "I can't stay here. I have to go back and..." he flexed his gloved hand, just thinking about the magnitude of what awaited him in the past, "...fix this. Somehow."

He had to find Obi-Wan. He had to make sure Padme was safe. She was safe, right?

She let him go easily enough, just folding her hands in her lap, nodding at the question, "Maz Kanata mostly, but also the Creche if they can be reached, a handful of others who have more history and more experience with the ways of the Force than I do."

Someone, somewhere, would know if this sort of thing had happened before and how to reverse it. At least in theory. But even she would admit that she didn't know everything, and the galaxy was a large, varied place, it was entirely possible that this was the first time something like this had happened, because she certainly couldn't explain it.

Maz's name just rolls off him as it rang no bells but, "the Creche?"

Then again, really the only association he had for that was the Temple's creche for younglings. "The Creche for what?"

"They once guarded the Egg of the Savior." She shook her head, "One of the odd, offshoot sects, but they were harmless enough, and they carry a history. Though now that the Savior has hatched, they may be unreachable, I'm not sure, I suppose I'll find out when I reach out to them."

Truthfully Maz was probably going to be the best resource, but given as how she had a business to relocate or be rebuilt, she might not be readily available, either.

"That sounds like a story." He waved a hand around, as if to indicate the war they've been fighting. "Savior not live up to expectation?"

Maybe they had that in common, he thought ruefully.

"Not so far as I know, though I do only know parts of it, secondhand." She replied, "The way I hear it they were all winged away to salvation, which is why they may be difficult to contact." Not impossible, according to all reports, they were still on the same planet, but no longer living underground and protecting their unborn savior.

Anakin raised his eyebrows. "Winged away to salvation?" His skepticism is obviously more than evident. It sounds too much like stories he used to hear on Tatooine from some of the other slaves. Those hadn't come true either.

"I guess it's no weirder than anything else here."

"In a literal sense. I wouldn't believe it myself if the report hadn't come from one of my best pilots." Poe Dameron was a reliable source, even after a head trauma he wouldn't make something like that up, and if he had head trauma he'd at least have the sense to say that he wasn't sure if something had happened.

"But Maz first, she may be able to contact the Creche, if they're even still able to be contacted." And it had been long enough since their salvation that Leia wasn't sure what the possibility of that was.

He's really not one who should show too much skepticism. He'd seen an entire planet take off into hyperspace, once, after all.

"This Maz it is, then. Tell me about her."

At least it's a way forward.

He promises he didn't mean to make that sound like an order.

"Maz Kanata, she's..." She paused, "Well I'm reluctant to say 'ancient' even if it is true. She's been around for some time, and she's seen more than most, even I know that much." She shook her head a little, as if to shake her thoughts back into order, "She's the best sort of pirate." A small smile, "The kind that's more or less retired."

She had already circled back around to her desk, scrolling through a file to find the right long-range frequency to send a message to the other woman, "She's a Force-sensitive a the very least, and something of a collector, and she's had plenty of time to collect in. If she doesn't know what's happened here and how to reverse it, she'll at least know someone, or know of someone who can."

"Force sensitive and she didn't end up a Jedi?" There was a note of distrust there, of course. So often the Order had characterized Force sensitives as Dark if they weren't Jedi...he couldn't help the thought was there in the back of his mind.

Then again, he'd come very close to being a non-Jedi Force sensitive himself.

"No, she was busy doing basically everything else as far as I can tell." After all, her 'retirement' so far had been a thousand years of running a cantina and Leia didn't know how old the woman actually was, she didn't think anyone knew that, not for certain. It was entirely possible that she'd seen the birth, rise, and subsequent fall of the Order and had somewhere along the line decided she wanted nothing to do with it.

But Leia didn't know that, either, though she suspected it.

"I know she's currently in the process of rebuilding, her cantina was recently the casualty of an extensive skirmish." She hated calling the battle that as it was more important than a mere skirmish, but it had been if only in size and duration, "But I'm fairly certain that this is the kind of thing she'll take interest in."

"A skirmish, huh? Why do I get the feeling we have something to do with that?" No, he wasn't there for it, but if he's falling in with them, he may as well call them that.

Either that or he hadn't even noticed he'd done it.

"So when do we go?"

Because now that they had something resembling a plan, he wasn't going to be content with staying in place for long.

"First we have to find out if she's even prepared for visitors." She replied, settling into her chair, she'd found the frequency she needed, and was just hesitating over how much information to send. She knew it would be encrypted, of course, and protected, but even still this wasn't the kind of thing one could trust to a long-range transmission.

"She may determine it's better to come here, instead." She added, fingers still just hovering over the keys, brow creased just a little, "Especially as I've no idea how to even start explaining this."

"Dear Maz," he intoned, "we were wondering what you know about accidental time travel as we think we have a time traveler on our hands and he wants to meet you."

"See?" he added, coming to lean over Leia's shoulder, "easy."

"Well..." Her fingers were just resting on the keys at that point instead of hovering over them, "She does tend to prefer the straightforward approach."

In the end, her message was simple enough: Madam Kanata, I find myself in need of your expertise in the ways of the Force. A visitor has arrived to us here on D'Qar who is, by all accounts, from another time and directly from a great upheaval in the Force.

I hesitate to ask if such a thing is possible, as clearly it is, but I am curious if you have heard of such a thing happening before? Clearly this would be something best discussed in person and we are prepared to come to you if necessary, or will be happy to prepare you guest quarters here if that is easier for you.

Please advise at your earliest convenience. She signed only as Leia Organa and not as General, because this was not an officially sanctioned communique, and she knew that Maz herself had little enough use for other people's titles.

"So diplomatic," he commented, still hovering. Then he considered how careful she was to not mention who her visitor was. He hadn't really been in the right state of mind to notice the others' reactions when he'd stated his name earlier but considering the totality of their conversation it seemed prudent to ask, "what are we going to tell people about me? In general?"

"Daughter of a senator." She replied to the first by way of explanation. She was always diplomatic as long as the situation called for it.

She settled back in her seat at the actual question, "That's what I've been trying to decide. The only thing that makes sense in the long run is the truth." She gave a little shrug, "Whether they believe it or not is up to them. The truth can be its own disguise that way."
