Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

oo1. The Meeting:
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding:
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection:
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection:
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost:
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution:
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death:
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School:
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded:
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

She nodded once, "I'll take a 'think it is' over a 'knowing it isn't' any day." She, likewise, was fairly sure it was clear, if there were anyone there, they were being still and quiet and unerringly calm, which she didn't think was the kind of thing that would happen in a recent battle zone.

She readjusted her grasp of the blaster, shouldering the strap in such a way that she could still easily swing it around to bear if necessary, "Lead on."

He flashed her a quick, humorless grin. Obviously they'd had some similar battlefield experiences.

And then he was leading the way to the nearest ship, having to pause a moment to convince the damned thing to open up for them before he ushered her on board.

He didn't fire the engines up right away though he did a quick scan of all the other pre-flight checks he could do in preparation before he looked up at her and explained. "If Obi-Wan is out there, I need to find him. I can probably get a lead through the Force but...we need to start from here without taking off yet. The second we're in the air there's no telling if the-..." he hesitated over what to call the clones now that they were suddenly enemies, "...troops will react immediately or not but I wouldn't be surprised if they did so we'll need to be ready to get a move on when we do."

She nodded at the first, stashing the blaster and strapping herself in easily enough, "I understand."

And then with another wry little half-smile, "We may be clear, we may be flying into heavy fire. Haven't done that in a while, but it won't be an entirely new experience." She knew how and where to brace herself if the ship pitched, and her reflexes were as good now as they'd ever been.

Anakin flashed her a wry smile at that before he settled down to reach into the Force and try to find Obi-Wan. Several minutes passed and eventually he was left shaking his head and and pounding the arm of his chair with a closed fist. "Nothing. I don't sense him anywhere around here." Which...might be a good thing? Anakin was going to choose to believe it meant Obi-Wan escaped and wasn't lying dead at the bottom of this sinkhole somewhere.

He started the engines and looked over at Leia. "I don't know what I can do for you here yet but..." he glanced down at the bowl she carried, "if you need an artifact, I know where there's a lot of them."

And he needed to get to Coruscant.

Not sensing anything was definitely a good thing, at least as far as her experience went. If someone was actually gone, there was usually a space where they should have been, an odd sort of emptiness like a missing tooth, "Nothing is good, in this case." She replied, "Even if he were gone there would still be something."

She just inclined her head as he powered the engines up, something that would have been a magnanimous nod even just a few years before, and probably still would be were he anyone else, "Then let's go."

Well, he'd been right about it not taking long for them to be noticed once they got in the air. Things definitely got hairy quick but it was nothing Anakin couldn't handle. Leia would be able to sense how it was like the ship became an extension of his body and he got it to do a few acrobatics few other pilots would've been able to match.

Which was how they managed to get past the clone pilots chasing them and the star destroyers in orbit around the planet and jump to hyperspace with all speed.

"Well," he quipped, "that was fun."

Considering the brightness to his eyes and the general sense of satisfaction at once again being better than everybody else he might not actually have been joking there. Not entirely.

"This isn't going to be a short trip," he added after a moment, "Utapau is on the Outer Rim."

It was easy to see where Luke had gotten that particular joy from, and herself to some extent, though not generally with ships. Speeders and speeder bikes were more her style, though not so much these days.

She nodded at the observation, "So we'll make the most of it." She replied, "And maybe I'll end up getting home without the intervention, though that isn't something I'm going to count on at all." Truth be told, she was trying not to count on it working even with an intervention, though she wasn't quite bracing herself for being stuck in the wrong time forever, she was willing to admit that it was, at least, a possibility.

He leaned back in his chair and looked over at her. "Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath on that."

Then Anakin shrugged slightly, "you've taken all of this surprisingly well."

Either that or she was just really good at keeping her feelings under wraps. Which was entirely possible.

It was a little bit of that last one, she'd had decades of practice at doing just that, after all.

She shook her head at the statement, however, "I'm not entirely sure it's sunk in yet. And I would probably be doing worse if I didn't already know this was possible." There was also the fact that she knew she needed to stay calm for the both of them, and that was probably the most important factor in all of this.

No pressure on being one of the very few things likely to help Anakin keep his hold on the Light Side if they don't find Obi-Wan, Leia.

"Glad I could help with that, then," he said dryly. "I love being a test case."

"sort of runs in the family, if that's any consolation." The times that she'd been a quote-unquote test case were far less drastic, however, and usually something she actually decided to do. But only usually.

She also had no doubt that she could hold together -at least for a while- if this all went pear-shaped, she'd probably have an easier time keeping him on the level than herself if it came to that, but she was doing her best not to borrow worry, there would be time to worry about things when -and if- they actually came to pass, and there was no sense getting worked up about them before then.

"Not consolation exactly but I suppose I can accept it."

Anakin smiled at her a moment. "You look like her, you know." Even if he was seeing her at a far later age than her mother currently was. He'd certainly studied Padme enough times to see her features quite clearly in her daughter.

She gave a small smile at that, head dipping, not quite sheepish, but still unused to that compliment even after this long. The expression was definitely one she'd gotten from him instead of her mother, though that was rather beside the point.

"So I've been told. Sometimes I can almost see it myself." It was different, coming from him, than it was coming from anyone else, however, she could actually believe it coming from him.

He reached out hesitantly, not quite touching her. "Something about the shape of your mouth, I think. Around the eyes. And-" he gestured a little, amusement lighting his features, "you share a penchant for complicated hairstyles."

Then he leaned back once more, "but there's something in your mannerisms too, how you carry yourself. The way you tilt your head sometimes. Holo-images probably didn't show that sort of thing well."

"No, they don't, not really." She knew she'd also picked up more than her share of mannerisms from Bail as well, but there was something comforting -even now- in knowing that some of them had been inherited.

The smile returned, along with a quiet huff of a laugh, "And the hair, I suspect is more due to location than anything. I can't say much about Naboo, I only ever visited, but Alderaanian culture and even status was more often linked to the intricacy of hairstyles less than textiles and clothing."

"On Naboo I think they just try to make everything beautiful."

Even the most mundane of buildings had architectural flourishes one wouldn't see elsewhere.

Anakin can only imagine that if Padme had been the Jedi, her lightsaber would be all flowing lines and grace. Somehow.

"That's possible as well. I remember everything fit together like a puzzle ball, even with the decorative curls everything fit right where it was supposed to, very little wasted space, if any at all."

It was something that had impressed her even then, because it wasn't something she'd seen much of.

"Not like Coruscant...even if you could say it's so crammed with people and buildings that it's impossible to waste space there."

Then again, you had places like the Jedi Temple that were quite airy and open. Probably there were beings in the lower levels of the planet that found it rather wasteful. It was definitely grandiose.

"I haven't been to Coruscant since I was young, but it seemed more like things were put in wherever there was a gap for them, and sometimes not even then. Just stacked on top of each other if there was air space or room between one building and the next."

It was similar in being like a puzzle-ball, but one that was unsolvable due to extra pieces or broken ones, or maybe a little of both.

"Well," he says as he glances at the instrument panel for a moment, "guess you'll be seeing it again soon enough. Probably a little worse for wear."

There had just been a giant space battle fought above it after all.

He's just not fully aware of how bad it looks on the ground yet, despite what he's been told.

She made a thoughtful sound at that, nodding, "And well before I've already seen it. Which is something I'm trying not to think too hard about."

It was quite possible that that battle damage was what had caused some of the tangle she'd seen, but she supposed that was something she'd find out soon enough as well.

Anakin snorted as they dropped hyperspace, Coruscant suddenly filling the viewport. "Yeah, I know the feeling."

Since he'd tried so hard not to think about...a lot of the implications about his presence in her future and her presence with him now.

She was already fully aware of just how careful she was going to have to be, hoping against hope that she didn't inadvertently change anything simply by being there. But it was also something she couldn't let herself worry about too much or she wouldn't do anything at all, which was incredibly counterproductive, all things considered.

So she nodded once, mostly just to pull herself together, "Alright. Let's get this over with."

The battle of Coruscant being still so recent, there was still plenty of evidence of the number of ships caught up in it in orbit around the planet. Many were just hulks that would have to be salvaged for scrap but more than a few appeared to be the precursors to the Star Destroyers Leia is more familiar with set up in a defensive perimeter around the planet. Somehow (the Force was with them still?) they managed to slip by without being challenged for clearance though Anakin was obviously preoccupied enough to not notice how unusual that was. Then again, he had also spent the last several years as a general in an army that didn't tend to question his direction.

As they near the planet's surface, Anakin's preoccupation seemed to increase as he was torn between going straight to find Padme and taking Leia to the Temple for that artifact search.

Or to deal with Palpatine, that thought was in there as well.

He ended up looking over at her, hoping for some direction...and maybe that's a hint for her as to how Palpatine had managed to lead her father toward the Dark Side. In so many ways, he's always deferred to authority figures, as much as he might have also chafed against their restraints. "If they're truly attacking the Jedi I don't know what we're going to find at the Temple...though I do know some ways in that nobody else probably does any more." He'd spent a lot of time sneaking out of it as a kid.

He shifted in his seat, "I don't think they'd have done anything to the senators?" By which he really meant Padme, of course.

"It's doubtful that they have." She replied, "Because at this stage they still want everyone to believe, even despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, that they're the ones being reasonable."

That, at least, was something she remembered, or at least remembered Bail's occasional rant about it, not that he was a man prone to ranting in general, but he'd done his best to teach her what had happened so that it wouldn't happen again if she had any influence in the matter.
