Love at First sight from We

Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

"Baston is an asshole," Hobbie muttered, "always had it in for us ever since Janson-"

Shaking his head sharply, he pushed that thought away. Once upon a time it would have been a funny story, though.

Instead, he focused on Poe again, "thought you weren't looking for a partner," which was one way of putting it. He wouldn't have thought twice if Poe weren't here. If they had decided to put him on one last mission just this time with no backup. He'd always been prepared to die for the Rebellion, after all--and the Resistance was just the Rebellion in a new party dress. Certainly he'd been treated far better than he would have been under the Empire.

But the more he thought about it, the more that the part of him that was just a plain old ornery, stubborn jerk raised its head. He wasn't ready to die just yet. And if there was some sort of afterlife out there, he would never hear the end of it from Wes. Ever.

"Yeah, he is." He agreed quietly, though he gave a shrug at the statement, nonchalant as he could manage even though he knew full well the gravity of the situation at hand, "Hey, just because I've turned down every ItB order that the General hasn't turned down for me doesn't mean I'm not looking." He hadn't been, but that was beside the point.

Especially considering that he added: "Besides, we both know I'd just be a stopgap, holdover, bailing wire and chewing gum measure, just because we can't afford to lose any more pilots than we already have. Anything we need to do to keep the ones we've still got in the air, right?" Judging by his tone, it wasn't as if it was going to be any sort of hardship for Poe, he genuinely wanted to help, if he could.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-30 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hobbie raised his eyebrows skeptically--at least that was a familiar expression to anyone who'd spent more than five minutes with him. "You really think it's just that easy?"

Then again, maybe it would be. Not every Guide and Sentinel pairing was quite as permanent as his had been with Wes.

Yeah, he just couldn't quite bring himself to believe that. Not when there was so much potential here for Poe to find himself disappointed. "Have you ever even done this before?"
squadless: (it might be dangerous)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-05-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh hell no it's not going to be just that easy." He replied, shaking his head, "For all I know maybe we won't even be able to stand each other, but it's worth trying."

A nod followed, "And I have done this before, not any kind of permanent bond, but I've helped stabilize others before." Not in as extreme a case as this one, and not when he was so recently unsettled himself, but he didn't figure either of those things really needed saying.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
He stared at Poe for a few long moments, possibly trying to decide how serious he is.

Or reminding himself probably not for the first time that this kid definitely would have been a Rogue if he'd been born a couple decades earlier. That thought was what decided him. "Fine," he said finally. "Let's give it a go."
squadless: (browraise)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-05-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah?" His smile was slow-spreading and completely warm. Poe's smiles were always honest, no matter who he was flashing them at, but that kind of grin was a rarity, "That didn't take anywhere near as much convincing as the General thought it was going to." A little one-shouldered shrug as he leaned forward in his chair, "We can tell her she was right anyway, though."

His brows both lifted, just a little, as he offered a hand over, "Ready to give it a shot when you are." Because really, better to find out now if they could even stand to touch each other than to find out after a few days of relative stability that they couldn't.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-30 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hobbie wasn't really one for waffling around when a decision needed to be made. And there really was no other Guide in the Resistance (not that there were actually that many at all) that he would even consider giving a chance. "The General manages to be right most of the time," Hobbie said dryly. "That's why she's the General."

He hesitated a moment before reaching back toward the other man, and another second longer let his hand hover over his before actually clasping it. The hiss of breath that escaped him following that was a little like steam escaping a pressure cooker.

No, he didn't hate this.
squadless: (standing tall)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-05-30 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a certain rawness, a ragged edge to Hobbie's presence that Poe had been expecting, but it wasn't unbearable, not by half, if anything it was less frayed than he'd been bracing himself for, and the fact that neither of them had recoiled instinctively as if burned or stung was only a good sign.

"Oh? Is that what it is? I thought it was because she had the best hair. Ma always said that's how it was with the Pathfinders, how she knew pops was the commander even before they'd been introduced."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-30 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're not wrong. I'm pretty sure that's why they made Wedge Rogue Leader." Well, after Luke left the Rogues anyway.

Then again, Luke's hair wasn't so bad either. Must be a Skywalker thing.

Talking about other old friends, at least, was something he could do. It helped. Poe was someone who understood in a way others might not.

He didn't think he was going to be letting go any time soon.
squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-05-30 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't like Poe was going to need that hand for anything anytime soon, either, so he wasn't going to object.

"Not going to say that's how I made squad commander." He said, tossing his head theatrically, "But it's got to be at least ten, maybe fifteen percent of how I made squad commander." He shrugged, "I mean, the only one that came close at the time was Karè." And there was that easy smile again, "And I'm at least 90% sure that's why she got her own squadron out of it."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-31 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd say I was sorry I'd never been so lucky but I'm really not. Not cut out for command, you know."

So he hadn't been endowed with particularly impressive hair. And at this point in his life, he keeps it cut pretty close to his skull anyway.
squadless: (pilot walk)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-05-31 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Some people aren't." He replied, giving a shrug, settling himself more comfortably in his chair, "And there's no shame in admitting that." At least, he'd never thought there was, but some people thought differently, he knew.

"And I've tried keeping mine shorter, but it's ridiculous how fast it grows." He shook his head, "Honestly I'm not even sure which parent to blame, either."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-05-31 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He did feel calmer now. The sense of loss was still there, of course, an ache he wasn't sure he'd ever stop feeling. Maybe he should just consider it yet another phantom limb pain he'd have to deal with. At least he was used to that.

Poe was too good at this. Was he even trying or did it just come naturally?

"Maybe you were got it doubly. Such a curse, really. I don't know how you manage to shoulder the burden."
squadless: (jedi mind trick)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-01 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
He was trying, a little, but he also knew when not to push, not wanting to upset the already tenuous balance Hobbie had managed to regain, that and it was bad form anyway, something he generally tried to avoid.

Not that he knew from experience, just from what he'd been told, but that sense of something missing would likely always be there, like a missing tooth, but the pain, at least, would fade, given time.

"Oh, that's a good point, actually. Genetics." He shook his head, sighing in mock-seriousness, "Not much to be done about that."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-01 04:07 am (UTC)(link)

[ooc: wow, holy word jumble up there. At least the gist got across.]

"There's always hair dye. I did hear about a pilot once who managed to dye it all a rather fetching shade of green. Unfortunately there's no holos." Pity, really. They'd probably still be circulating the ranks even now. Horn would be a legend.

squadless: (in cockpit)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-01 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
[yep! I got it, I'm used to word-salad, really.]

"Dye wouldn't work, at least, it doesn't hold for long, hair's too thick for it." Which meant that he'd tried at least once, "Some shades of color-crawlers stick longer than others, the reds and the oranges, mostly, but the silver wasn't too bad, either."

Pilots, it seemed, mostly had the same ideas of entertainment, regardless of generation.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-01 09:53 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie looked speculatively at Poe's hair. Rather like he was trying to decide what it would feel like if he tested that too thick for it theory. Maybe if he wasn't old enough to be the other pilot's father.

"Silver, huh? Wouldn't want to look older than your time."

Who are they kidding, Poe looked to be the sort who would never look particularly old, even when he got up in years.

squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-01 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Truth be told, Poe wouldn't have minded the touch-test, and had been half-expecting one, because that was the normal reaction when he made a claim like that.

He wasn't puzzled by the lack of one, however, as it wasn't everyone's thing, and despite the fact that they worked together, he and Hobbie only knew each other as well as could be expected.

There was a crooked smile at the statement all the same, "Older than my time? I'm closer to forty than I am twenty."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-01 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"And I'm closer to sixty than forty," he retorted. "I think I know what I'm talking about."

If his own hair weren't so short and blonde, the grays threaded in might be more obvious. Wes had teased him incessantly about it until Hobbie plucked the first gray from his Guide's head and just. smirked.

"So I reserve the right to call you a kid."
squadless: (downtime)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's fair." He replied with a decisive, easy nod, "I won't even complain too much." there was amusement in his presence as much as in his tone, "And for what it's worth, dad started going grey when he was younger than I am now, so who even knows what 'my time' is going to be."

Especially when taking into account that his mother hadn't lived long enough to start going grey, and as far as he knew, his grandfather on that side, much like his father, was still a highly distinguished salt-and-pepper.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-01 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)

It wasn't quite a smile, but there was a suggestion of one around his eyes. "I'll start a betting pool and we'll sell lots for someone to inspect you every day."

"Could probably end up buying a lot of drinks that way."

Yes, the speculative look was back.

squadless: (distracted)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
He hummed quietly, thoughtful, "That... actually sounds like a reasonable solution. Blocks for date and for time, I'm not one to argue more drinking money."

He doubted that any of them were, really, but sometimes it did need to be said.

It was also anyone's guess as to whether he were being serious or not, he was one of those people who could, occasionally, make anything sound serious even if it wasn't.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 02:53 am (UTC)(link)

"I'll get on it," he promised, wry, "just as soon as they let me out of here."

Which he wasn't entirely certain was imminent just because he and Poe were having a friendly conversation.

squadless: (standing tall)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably take them a while to sort out new quarters." He said, giving another little shrug, "And make sure there's not going to be some kind of eleventh-hour rejection."

The smile was back, "And if there isn't Jess owes the General ten credits, and so do I. Pretty sure her exact words were 'even Dameron's not that good'." Members of his own squad had bet against his abilities, and he'd sided with them.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 03:13 am (UTC)(link)

He raised his eyebrows, "you want I should save you the credits? I can suddenly decide this is a bad plan."

Except for the part where it wasn't. And besides, the General was practically a Jedi herself, sort of. She'd probably tell he was lying just by looking at him.
