Love at First sight from We

Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

He arched a brow in turn, somehow managing to indicate the fact that neither of them had let go of the other's hand yet even without saying so or jostling that grasp, "Nah, I can afford it, might as well stick it out."

'stick it out' as if it were actually some kind of hardship, though he was fairly certain that they both knew it wasn't.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 03:28 am (UTC)(link)

He'd thought about it. But it was...comfortable. Hard to convince himself to let go just to make a point though of course at some point they would have to just for practicality's sake. Though for a moment he had a mental image of them dragging each other around the base, hands still locked together. It'd make piloting an X-wing pretty difficult though.

"You're a saint, Dameron. Truly a paragon to be admired."

"Don't go casting aspersions just because this actually worked." He wasn't really trying very hard to sound like meant that, though he managed to keep the smile in check as he did so, for a few brief moments.

Though seriousness did return a moment later, "If it stops working, though, tell me, we'll try something else." As if Poe wouldn't be the first one to know if it wasn't working any longer.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 03:43 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie reached up with his free hand and tapped his temple before stretching out to do the same to Poe. "Pretty sure I won't have to say anything. But it's nice of you to give me the option."

Then, out of nowhere. "You hungry? I could eat."

Because it wasn't like he'd actually had anything substantial since. Probably before the battle.

squadless: (downtime)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't exactly flinch at that hand at his temple, but he did go still, at least for a moment, shaking himself out of it with an agreement of: "I could eat." Mostly because he didn't think he'd actually had anything to eat since breakfast, and that seemed longer away than it had been, time mostly seemed a little distorted even for the past few days.

His head tilted, just a little, "You want me to go get something? Or see if we keep talking about it long enough and they'll bring us something?"

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well that reaction was interesting.

But to other matters first. Hobbie pursed his lips in thought. "We're stuck with whatever they want to bring us if we just wait for them to do it. Might be better if you go."

Assuming Poe leaving didn't cause that gaping maw of grief to open up inside him again, they'd be fine.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
The last time he'd had a hand there it was because someone was prying his mind open like a particularly stubborn crustacean, which he knew Hobbie wasn't likely to do, but the reflex was there, because despite what people said, Poe did have some self-preservation instinct.

But that was something to be worried about later, right at the moment food was becoming a rapidly more pressing matter, "I can be down to the mess and back in two shakes." He tilted his head from side to side as if weighing something out, "Maybe three."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I think I can manage three if I don't die of starvation first. And if you bring back a Lomin-ale too I might kiss you."

Pause, and then a headtilt of his own.

"But that might not be much of an incentive."

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah?" The crooked smile was back, "I'll have to see what I can do, then." Of course, it still meant that he was going to have to let go, first, which he was going to have to do eventually anyway, but he wasn't entirely sure he was ready for.

"Okay, sooner I leave, sooner I can get back." Which was a reminder for both of them, really, "On three." He didn't count aloud, just curled his fingers lightly against Hobbie's, once, twice, and a third time before letting go, cautious, ready to take hold again if he had to.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
As Poe let go, Hobbie made an abortive movement to pull him back before closing his hand into a fist and resisting the urge. Yes, that pain of loss was still there, still sharp, and he suspected if he wasn't careful it'd cut him open again. He couldn't promise it wouldn't at some time in the future.

But for the moment at least, it was something he could handle. Maybe being the one to survive when he'd lost so many other friends and comrades over the years had just been to prepare him for this one.

Pessimistic thinking still fully engaged, apparently, but that wasn't surprising.

For all of that, his voice was still a little rough when he nodded, "okay. Go on so you can get back."
squadless: (w/bb-8)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He nodded once, not quite popping up from his chair, but definitely moving quickly.

To his credit he made the trip as short as possible, returning with sandwiches and a plate of fruit and BB-8 in tow in the middle of giving the pilot what was apparently an extensive lecture, one that trailed off into a sad hoot as the droid trundled over to settle next to the chair that Poe dropped himself back into.

"Water only for now," He explained, apologetic, "Doctor's orders, until we're sure the sedatives are totally cycled out of your system. Don't want to cause any reactions."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-02 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)

Despite having been around them for so long, Hobbie had never been one of those guys who automatically could follow all the beeps and whistles of astromechs without something to translate. Sure, obvious commentary in reaction to something was one thing, but long strings like that were something else entirely. It was the same way with Wookiees, really. Chewbacca could be pretty damn expressive but that didn't mean Hobbie understood Shyriiwook.

So he merely flashed BB-8 a curious look before taking one of the sandwiches and looking up at Poe. "Droid not agree with," he waved a hand at both of them vaguely, "this?"

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-03 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Planning the wedding, actually." Poe replied, utterly nonchalant. Though, judging by the wholly indignant squawk and the entirely incredulous look -and how something with only a dome and a single ocular lens could look that incredulous was a mystery- that the astromech turned on him, this was not, in fact, what the lecture had been about.

Poe grinned a moment later, "Nah, just trying to work out how I'm going to keep doing my usual do-or-die runs, but I think I'm done with those. And if not, we'll just have to figure out how to turn them into two-man missions."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie smirked around a mouthful of sandwich at the wedding comment, swallowing before he actually replied. "You have to wear the dress. I swore them off twenty years ago."

The other comment got a far more serious expression, "I wouldn't be expecting to be going off alone if I were you." They both had responsibilities to each other now, after all, and his was to keep Poe safe. Do or die came with the territory but a Guide doing or dying without his Sentinel was a bad plan all around.

squadless: (pilot walk)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-03 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
"I can wear the dress, sure, just as long as it's not white, makes me look ashy." He nodded at the rest, talking around a bite of citrus fruit, "Pretty sure I'm done with them for a while, not the kind of thing we'll be needing any time soon."

Another shrug, "And I'm pretty sure the General's trying to wrangle us some enforced recovery time, we'll probably get a couple days if nothing else." If they got anything more than a full day, Poe would likely drag Hobbie off to Yavin 4 to see his father and visit with his mother's Tree, something Poe himself did whenever he got the chance.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 03:56 am (UTC)(link)

"A couple days?" He gasped in mock surprise. "I doubt the general would care to leave us to our own devices for that long." Well, when it had been the combination of Janson and Klivian in their heyday. That remained to be seen with this new pairing.

"Also," he added, pointing decisively, "you just jinxed us. We'll be on our way out the door and some urgent mission will come up that has to be dealt with immediately. I'm going to blame you."

squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-03 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I will readily accept all the blame on that one." He replied, pressing a hand over his heart, mock-solemn, "But I never said she'd leave us to our own devices that long, we'd probably have a chaperon.

Truth be told, Poe was more or less the responsible sort, though generally it was in the case of if something was on fire when it hadn't been before, Poe was the one responsible for that.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Can I vote for BB-8 to be the chaperon?" You know, because clearly the little droid was the most actually-responsible of the three of them.

It remained to be seen whether the droid would take that as a compliment from Hobbie or not. Hobbie was just going to see to finishing the rest of his meal.
squadless: (downtime)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-03 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Poe grinned, glancing over at the droid who seemed to be considering the suggestion, "Probably turn out better than any people I can think of."

He gave the droid an affectionate nudge with his knee, one that earned him a raspberry and a veritable cold-shoulder, BB-8's dome swiveling around as if turning its back, "Right, so that's a 'no', probably smart enough to know you can't keep us out of trouble even if you tried, huh?"

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
"We'll deal with. Whatever. Whoever." That was either an actually optimistic sentiment from Hobbie or a promise that didn't really suggest their hypothetical chaperon would be particularly happy trying to keep up with them. Probably better if Leia just let them handle their own itinerary.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-03 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Under normal circumstances, even a day to recover was usually the best that could be done, but given that they'd both suffered recent trauma and would need some kind of time to be back to themselves, there was a very real chance that they'd get a couple of days.

"If we get anything more than a full day I'm going to haul you off to meet my dad, just so you know."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well I would have to ask him for your hand in marriage before we finish planning that wedding," Hobbie said, completely deadpan, as he reached for a piece of fruit.

Though in all actuality, the idea in general of being 'hauled off' to meet his father just seemed strange.
squadless: (it might be dangerous)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-04 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly it was just because Yavin 4 was the most peaceful place Poe knew about, and because Kes was always willing to let him stay even if it was only as a stopover of a few hours.

He grinned at the response, "You know if you do he's just going to ask what kind of trouble we got into that you have to make an honest man out of me to make up for it."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-04 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," he said, supremely unconcerned, "I'm sure I could come up with something."

He had a whole lifetime of ridiculous stories to draw on, after all. A good portion didn't even necessarily involve him.
squadless: (downtime)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-04 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Poe laughed once, a half-surprised bark of sound, shaking his head a moment later and taking a bite of sandwich just to stop himself from talking, though what he did say when he'd finished chewing was: "Might be worth it."
