Love at First sight from We

Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

"I will readily accept all the blame on that one." He replied, pressing a hand over his heart, mock-solemn, "But I never said she'd leave us to our own devices that long, we'd probably have a chaperon.

Truth be told, Poe was more or less the responsible sort, though generally it was in the case of if something was on fire when it hadn't been before, Poe was the one responsible for that.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Can I vote for BB-8 to be the chaperon?" You know, because clearly the little droid was the most actually-responsible of the three of them.

It remained to be seen whether the droid would take that as a compliment from Hobbie or not. Hobbie was just going to see to finishing the rest of his meal.

Poe grinned, glancing over at the droid who seemed to be considering the suggestion, "Probably turn out better than any people I can think of."

He gave the droid an affectionate nudge with his knee, one that earned him a raspberry and a veritable cold-shoulder, BB-8's dome swiveling around as if turning its back, "Right, so that's a 'no', probably smart enough to know you can't keep us out of trouble even if you tried, huh?"

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
"We'll deal with. Whatever. Whoever." That was either an actually optimistic sentiment from Hobbie or a promise that didn't really suggest their hypothetical chaperon would be particularly happy trying to keep up with them. Probably better if Leia just let them handle their own itinerary.

Under normal circumstances, even a day to recover was usually the best that could be done, but given that they'd both suffered recent trauma and would need some kind of time to be back to themselves, there was a very real chance that they'd get a couple of days.

"If we get anything more than a full day I'm going to haul you off to meet my dad, just so you know."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-03 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well I would have to ask him for your hand in marriage before we finish planning that wedding," Hobbie said, completely deadpan, as he reached for a piece of fruit.

Though in all actuality, the idea in general of being 'hauled off' to meet his father just seemed strange.

Mostly it was just because Yavin 4 was the most peaceful place Poe knew about, and because Kes was always willing to let him stay even if it was only as a stopover of a few hours.

He grinned at the response, "You know if you do he's just going to ask what kind of trouble we got into that you have to make an honest man out of me to make up for it."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-04 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," he said, supremely unconcerned, "I'm sure I could come up with something."

He had a whole lifetime of ridiculous stories to draw on, after all. A good portion didn't even necessarily involve him.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-04 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Poe laughed once, a half-surprised bark of sound, shaking his head a moment later and taking a bite of sandwich just to stop himself from talking, though what he did say when he'd finished chewing was: "Might be worth it."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-07 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll start working on the story then. I'm sure it'll bring a tear to his eye."

He paused a beat.

"Whether that would be from laughter or tender emotion is a debate for some other time."
squadless: (browraise)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-11 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Whichever one works." He replied, smiling again, "We're going to have to make sure and get it on video either way." Because even as a joke, he knew his father would appreciate it later.

Maybe especially, in that case.

"We should hear soon just how much enforced recuperation time we're getting." He added, it wasn't like the General to wait long in cases like that, if only because she knew that dealing with pilots was like herding cats.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-11 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie looked over at the closed door and shrugged, "as long as it comes with reassurance I won't be enforced into it by staying in here the whole time, it can't come soon enough."

squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
He shook his head, "Nah, they wouldn't, mostly because if you're on enforced recovery confined to one room, that means I am too, and they already know that's a bad idea."

Not that he'd ever actually done anything to warrant that precaution, not as far as he knew, though some would argue that starting a crystal-lizard colony was definitely grounds for such.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"If nothing else, I'm sure they'd rather send us on a honeymoon rather than watch us consummate our fake marriage," Hobbie said dryly.

Poe might not have ever done anything to warrant that precaution but quite likely the same couldn't be said of Hobbie. And if nothing else, two bored starfighter jockeys with nothing better to do than think up trouble was never a good idea.
squadless: (pilot walk)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-13 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That got another almost too-sharp grin from Poe, "Yeah, you're probably right on that one." He shrugged, "Either way, not like the General to keep people waiting long."

Not unless they deserved it, of course, there had been more than once when he'd found her in her office after a meeting should already have started, and the one time she'd been viciously swearing and he'd been concerned that she was injured, it turned out she was just cursing to get it out of her system so she didn't slip up and use the words she actually wanted to with the Republic officials she was meeting with.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie looked up a moment before Poe might hear someone's footsteps outside the door. "Talk about your timing. They've definitely been listening to us."

Not that he was in any position to complain.

[ooc: idk, want to just time-jump forward a bit? going to Yavin?]

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[ooc: /thumbsup! Sounds like a plan.]

They'd been given five days, which was more than Poe had been expecting. They could have used more, of course, but all things considered, five was generous and probably more than the Resistance as a whole could actually afford.

Their transport shuttle touched down in the late afternoon, and BB-8 -who hadn't been about to be left behind- charged on ahead down the path, knowing exactly where it was they were going. The Dameron family homestead, like most of the others, was a squat, level-and-a-half affair, the top half-level mostly used for storage, with the Force-sensitive tree that Shara had helped to rescue towering up over one side.

Kes emerged as they approached, smiling crookedly -and it was easy to see where Poe's smile had come from- before sweeping Poe into a brief, if heartfelt hug, clapping his shoulder once as he let go, turning to Hobbie then, "Welcome to the homestead." A nod followed, addressing both of them as he waved them inside, "Dinner in about an hour, guest room's been aired out, Poe can lead the tour."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie looked around them as they exited the ship, gaze a little distant as memories of the last time he was there intruded. Not that he'd had much time for sightseeing then and at least with thirty years' distance, he could appreciate the jungle's ambience...even if it had almost killed him. He definitely didn't appreciate the humidity, however, but there was a saying out there about beggars and choosers. At Kes' greeting, Hobbie snapped back into the present and offered up a polite smile, "looks a lot cozier than one of those big stone behemoths we bunked in before."

squadless: (jacket)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
That got a huff of a laugh from Kes, shaking his head, "Most of those are still standing, if you can believe it. Probably still will be even once we're all gone and the jungle takes the pre-fab houses back."

Poe sighed, shaking his head, "Yes, true, I'm sure, but can we at least save the discussion of our eventual, inevitable descent into entropy until after dinner?"

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-19 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Aw, Poe," Hobbie said, slinging an arm around his shoulders and drawing him toward the house, "but everyone knows entropy makes for the best dinner conversation."

Under normal circumstances, it might be odd for Hobbie to be going for physical contact with someone he's really only just started to get to know. Despite all the jokes about making an honest man out of him. In this particular case it was more pre-emptive stabilizing of himself. It's just as well they weren't in one of those old temples.

"I could tell you all about the time I nearly died instead, if you want. We can work through the whole list, we'll be here all night."
squadless: (standing tall)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-21 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Poe was perfectly content to allow -and even encourage- that stabilization, since that was more or less what their enforced down time was for.

He gave a shrug at the statement, however, even as he looped an arm far too casually to actually be casual around Hobbie's waist, "You could, but I'd have to trade you my stories of almost-dying, and then we really would be up all night, and dad would worry, he hasn't heard half of them, doesn't really need to."

Of course, saying so loudly enough that Kes could hear was half the point of saying it at all.

He did lead Hobbie down the house's one hallway, pointing out workshop and 'fresher, and right on through to the guest room at the back of the house, with its own door to the outside and a half bath that consisted of a shower stall and a counter with a sink.

Then Poe, his concern as genuine as ever asked: "You doing okay? We can just sit in the quiet for a while if you need to."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie settled on the edge of the room's bed and shrugged. "Not so bad. Visiting family is strange," he looked up at Poe with a wry expression. "I didn't see mine pretty much from the time I left for the Academy." He didn't sound particularly broken up about it, though.

"I'd hate to sound too woo-woo mystical," he'd tended to leave that sort of thing up to Luke. Mysticism seemed to be more of a Jedi thing, anyway. "But it just feels like Yavin's got a lot of ghosts, you know?"

And not just of the Rebel pilots that had died here. Stars only knew how many people were on the Death Star when it exploded.

Then it occurs to him that saying stuff like that about Poe's home probably isn't the best way to endear himself, "sorry. Despite being haunted, your dad still has a nice place."

squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-06-22 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh it's definitely haunted." He replied, only mostly joking, "And dad'll be the first one to say so." He gave a shrug, dropping himself down to sit on the chest at the foot of the bed, "And mystical-woo-woo is allowed on this side of the house."

He made a vague gesture to the tree outside, the one that despite shading the room, also seemed to glow on its own, even in the early-evening light, "Mom's tree, or, I mean it used to be a shard of the Force-sensitive trees from the temple. She helped Luke rescue it."

oops

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-06-22 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Hobbie's eyes followed Poe's gesture toward the tree and he tilted his head curiously. "Sounds like a story. Rescued a tree?"

From, he assumed, the Jedi Temple.

He nodded, "Mom's last mission before she retired, Skywalker requested her specifically, or so I've been told, a raid on an Imperial research facility on Vetine."

He shrugged, "I don't know the whole story, I don't think anyone does anymore except maybe Skywalker, all I ever heard was that the espionage part failed pretty spectacularly, so they had to fall back on the standard Plan B, but they still got the tree out, just a little sapling then, and Luke knew that it would be safe here with her."
