Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

Hobbie tilted his head, looking curiously at the dianoga. He hadn't actually had much in the way of up close and personal experience with them though he'd heard the story of Luke nearly drowning thanks to one in the Death Star trash compactor.

Then he let out a bark of laughter and waved his left hand a little. "Maybe you should've gotten it a metal arm too." Hobbie was probably lucky he'd ended up getting called Hobbie instead of Stumpy himself.

The one on the Death Star -as far as Poe knew, since he'd heard the story as well- had been more than half-starved, as they didn't usually go after anything human or human-sized unless they were desperate.

"Don't know that he's not making himself one with all the scraps down there." He replied with a shrug, still smiling crookedly as he offered one of the fruits over to Hobbie, "You want to make friends?

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-08-14 07:07 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie accepted the fruit and looked at it speculatively. "A guy could always use more friends in the galaxy." Even if the friend in question was a trash-eating monster.

With a shrug, he tossed the fruit underhanded toward Stumpy for him to catch.

Poe bit the inside of his cheek to keep from grinning as Stumpy caught that fruit as well, stuffing it into his beak even though he hadn't finished chewing the first one, something that made the creature shriek, a sound like rending metal, or an arc-welder being used underwater.

Poe finally laughed, "That's a good sound, I know it doesn't sound like it, but it is, happy yelling."

sorry it took so long!

Hobbie raised his eyebrows, looking between Stumpy and Poe. "I'll take your word for it," he says finally, all skepticism. "Guess he must like fruit that hasn't been sitting around in a garbage trench for a few days."

no worries man, it happens

[personal profile] squadless 2016-09-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Poe chuckled, finally grinning as he tossed the last of the fruit to the creature, rewarded with another squall, "That's the last of it, buddy. I'll see if I can bring you more tomorrow."

He gave a shrug then, "Might be, doesn't seem to bother him if it's been sitting for a while. Honestly I think it's the company." Though many of the settlers talked to the Dianoga like it was some sort of community pet, it got excited about it every time.

do you want to let this go? or timejump them forward a bit? I'm good either way!

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-09-04 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Never thought about getting him a friend?" Though the likelihood of taming two of the creatures seems slim. Or two of them sharing space, for that matter.

"So now that you've shown me around the sights," so to speak, "what do we do next?" He glanced up skyward. "Guess it's getting pretty late."
squadless: (in cockpit)

I say jump and if nothing else sticks we can let it go - did you have a plot point in mind?

[personal profile] squadless 2016-09-07 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"A few people have thought about it, but we'd have to widen the trench, and they grow to fit their environment, so it's safer just to keep the one."

He nodded at the rest, "Head back and try to get some sleep, I think." He'd save meeting his mother, or at least the Tree, until the next day, even though it was on the same side of the house as the guest room, and chances were good Poe would just slip out to talk to it in the morning, right around dawn.

here we gooooo~

Heading back and getting some rest had seemed like a pretty good idea. After all, with all the traveling and everything else, it'd been a rather long day so Hobbie was plenty content with that plan.

Which was fine until some point in the middle of the night when he suddenly found himself snapping awake. Understanding of where he is followed a half-second later, and then awareness that what woke him up was the sound of someone trying too hard to move surreptitiously outside. He thought.

Definitely something wrong. Or surely Kes would have mentioned they were expecting company?

Either way, he didn't bother changing from his sleep-clothes. They're dark, that'll help. Maybe he should wake up Poe too, he thought. But finding the problem and neutralizing it seemed of more immediate importance.

He paused by the door that led outside and listened, hard, before slipping quietly out and into a patch of shadow. Now that he was outside he could smell the bastards too. Trandoshan, he thought, and something else. Maybe more than one something. For a moment, Hobbie regretted not bringing a blaster with him. The Trandoshan would be a problem without one.

So he settled on finding one of those 'something elses' and found himself a human obviously dressed to be camouflaged in the darkness setting explosive charges on the house. Killing him would've been a quiet affair if Hobbie had accounted for the human's lookout first.

Instead he now had one dead interloper and another lighting up the night around him with blasterfire.

Perfect. Just kriffing perfect.

Poe was awake shortly before the blasterfire broke out, partly because Hobbie was awake, but partly because of BB-8's quiet reboot chirp, sounding altogether too much like a cat unexpectedly woken from a nap. The droid had been recharging when the power to the house had been cut, which resulted in actually powering up again.

He startled when the firefight broke out, rolling from bed to the floor, landing as quietly as he could, though he didn't have to worry overmuch, given how much noise had just erupted outside.

He was unsurprised to find Kes at the bedroom door, offering over a blaster with a quick, quiet explanation of: "Your uncle Dimas got hit first, got the word out before the power went down." The man wasn't actually Poe's uncle, but one of Kes' squad-mates. Poe was equally unsurprised to find that they had a warning and communications system in place, only surprised in that it meant this had happened before and he hadn't known about it.

Kes eyed him a moment but nodded once, "I've got the front, you get the back, find Hobbie before he gets himself caught, let's not have to deal with a ransom today." Poe just nodded once, accepting the blaster and giving BB-8 sentry duty on his way out the back door, keeping alert for the pull of Hobbie's presence at the back of his mind.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-09-12 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie at least had had the sense to take the dead assassin's blaster and start firing back as he sprinted for better cover.

It wasn't overly difficult for Poe to find him between that and the sense of anger rising in him that this scum had come at them like cowards in the middle of the night. Had endangered his-. Poe.

By the time Poe gets to him, Hobbie had taken out another of the bounty hunters with a few well-placed shots. "You always late to the party?" he said by way of greeting since cracking wise was preferable to a great many other things at the moment.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-09-14 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He flashed a grin at that, "Only when it's a pre-dawn surprise party." He couldn't help the wash of relief at the fact that his, the Sentinel, was so far unharmed. Kes, for his part, was no sniper, but he was doing an excellent job at picking them off from the loft window, and Poe had very little concern on that front.

He twisted aside, eeling himself up from behind their current cover, picking two of the raiding party off himself before dropping again, which was when he asked: "What tipped you off?" Because if it was something Poe should have noticed himself, he was probably going to kick himself later for not having noticed.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-09-14 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)

Hobbie's answering grin was fierce as he turned and fired on someone who'd gotten clever was tried to flank them.

"Don't know. Something woke me up. Maybe that Trandoshan."

Who, he thought, he hadn't seen yet. That didn't bode well.

squadless: (waitwhat?)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-09-17 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
His brow furrowed as he did a quick mental once-over of the bodies he'd seen already taken down, just to confirm that no, he hadn't seen one, shaking his head a moment later, "Not downed already."

That definitely didn't bode well, especially considering that they didn't know how big the raiding party even was to start with. After that initial volley there were now just occasional bursts of blaster fire throughout the settlement and Poe was trying to track what was going on just by the location, though that wasn't at all easy to do.
