Love at First sight from We

Sentinels and Guides Shipping Meme
A Sentinel!AU Meme

There are special people in the world: Sentinels--whose five senses are incredibly enhanced, sometimes to the point of overwhelming and who can easily lose themselves in fugue states--and Guides, the empaths with the ability to ground a Sentinel and focus them. Meant to be the protectors of the Guides, for every Sentinel there exists a guide that is their perfect match. In some universes, when matches are made, a Sentinel and Guide form a soulbond to fill the feeling of emptiness.

How easy was it for you to find yours? How are Sentinels and Guides treated in your universe? Or maybe you're one of the normal, unremarkable people. Do you fear Sentinels and Guides? Despise them?

Prompts
oo1. The Meeting
How did you meet? Was it at an event organized specifically for finding your other half? By accident? Did you follow a mystical calling to them? Some other way?

oo2. The Bonding
Do Sentinels and Guides in your universe soulbond? How does it go down? Is there a ceremony or do you just retreat to the bedroom?

oo3. Rejection
Sometimes Sentinels or Guides propose a match but it's just not perfect. You don't feel the pull or maybe you think there is someone better or maybe you're already claimed. Maybe you were claimed and someone better came along?

oo4. Protection
Sentinels are meant to protect Guides, any Guides, but it's even worse when they feel their Guide is in danger. They go feral; blind to anything but stopping and killing whoever threatened their Guide or the bond. Maybe someone attacked your Guide or you haven't bonded yet and you feel threatened or maybe you're the one doing the threatening. Whatever the reason, Sentinels in a feral state are dangerous and only their Guides can stop them.

oo5. Lost
Sentinels often lose themselves in their senses. Either you're a Sentinel who has lost themselves or a Guide that has stumbled on one or a friend trying to draw them out. Unbonded Sentinels will find it hard to escape without a Guide. Or maybe you're bonded already which means you just need yours to come home.

006. Persecution
Sometimes normal people or the government fear the power of Guides and Sentinels. Guides are empaths, feeling the emotions and sometimes passing thoughts of others and it can make people feel violated. Sentinels often have enhanced strength, which can make them dangerous. So they scorn them, hurt them or in the case of governments, regulate them.

oo7. Death
Unbonded Sentinels and Guides eventually lose themselves to the empty cavern inside them. Torn apart from the inside by the feeling of something missing. Breaking the soulbond of a Sentinel and Guide is agonizing and horrifying, leading quickly to death for the remaining partner.

oo8. Old-School
Guides used to be treated on the same level as slaves. Unable to work unless their Sentinel said. Not allowed out on their own. They used to wear collars and couldn't own land or inherit money. Maybe the old ways haven't completely fallen out of style.

oo9. Unbonded
Nothing is worse than being an unbonded Guide or Sentinel. Always looking for your other half to fill that empty feeling but you probably have friends that aren't your match or who are trying to set you up with someone. Maybe you're skeptical about the whole love at first sight thing and haven't been looking.

o10. Wildcard: Some mish-mash of the above or anything else you can come up with!

Poe shrugged, brow creasing, "It was hardly any bigger than me at the time, and it was just hurt." He shook his head, talking around his next bite of roll, "besides, not like it could have bitten me unless I stuck my arm right in its beak."

Kes didn't bother arguing that the remaining tentacles had still been strong enough to cut off circulation, because that was an old argument, and a moot point, instead he just smiled again, brow arching over at Hobbie, "Probably the biggest stray he's brought in, but definitely not the only one, so I hope you're ready for that, because nobody's been able to get him to stop yet."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-07 03:14 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie raised his eyebrows at Kes and pointed at himself, "I think I might be a case in point here so I don't really have any moral high ground when it comes to any other strays."

Then again, depending on the theoretical stray in question, he might have something to say about it anyhow. Another Sentinel, for instance, would right out.

That statement was enough to get a bark of a laugh from Poe, shaking his head, "Hadn't thought of that, but yeah, I guess you do count." He shrugged then, "Which means you're probably safe from me bringing in any others, usually it's just one at a time."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-07 03:48 am (UTC)(link)

"Good," pronounced Hobbie with what was quite likely possessive satisfaction before he focused himself on actually doing justice to his dinner.

Soon enough he did have to add, flashing Kes a wry look, "toss in a swimming pool and this might be the nicest vacation anybody's ever taken me on."

In its own way, Yavin IV probably could actually be a tourist destination. Who didn't like tropical jungles, ancient ruins, and historic battle sites?

Damn, now he's gone and made himself feel even older.

Kes chuckled, giving a little shrug, easy to see where Poe had gotten that from as well, "There is a lake."

Poe nodded, "And it's not going to be full of fish this time of year. Not that that would stop me from getting in it, I'm just saying, less chance of getting snuck up on and pecked at to find out if you're edible is all."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-07 04:25 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie shrugged a little himself, "doubt they'd find about half of me very edible." Maybe not quite half, but who was really counting the percentages?

"Probably a good thing your dianoga would prefer the trash pit though." Just pause for a moment and imagine a lake-sized dianoga and all the wriggly little babies it would end up producing.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-07 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly everyone was surprised that there hadn't been any babies in the trash trench, and if there were they stayed small, which made sense, what with Stumpy taking up much of the space there.

Poe shrugged, "We can go meet Stumpy too, if you want to. But the fish are definitely harmless."

Kes nodded as well, "Actually harmless, not just docile. They're plant-eaters mostly, keep the lake clean of algae bloom."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-07 04:38 am (UTC)(link)

"Why not? Nothing like a little adventure, right?"

Which, considering present company entirely what they were discussing was nothing like adventure.

Somewhere in the back of his mind Hobbie was just waiting for Resistance TIEs to come screaming down from the sky or for Stumpy to have hit an angry teenager phase or something.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-07 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Which was the sort of thing this downtime was supposed to ease. But being fair, Poe was likewise keeping partially alert for anything out of place, the sound of incoming ships where there shouldn't be for instance.

He'd finished with his own dinner, using another roll to mop up the last of the soup from his bowl, glancing at the front windows, "Still enough light if you want to go now. Or we can go in the morning."

dammit, I knew something felt wrong when I typed "Resistance TIEs".

[ooc: But I was distracted. I should ban myself from email replies.]

"Let's go and see, it's what we're here for, isn't it?" Well, sort of.

Hobbie raised his eyebrows, "unless you want to tackle the dishes first." Not that he really expected that to be the case. And if it was, well...Hobbie was a pretty good dish-drier.

lol, been there, though they've probably got at least a couple they cobbled together from parts

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-07 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Kes shook his head, waving that suggestion off, "I can put them in the machine, the pair of you are supposed to be recuperating, so go, commune with nature or whatever it is you're doing."

Poe laughed, slinging another quick hug around his father's shoulders before heading for the door, holding it open for Hobbie, "Not going to let him think twice about that, let's go."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-07 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Hobbie gave Kes a short wave and followed Poe's direction outside. As he did so, he made a point of fanning himself with one hand and tugging at his shirt like it was sticking to him.

"I forgot how it can feel like you're swimming through the air around here."

Poe didn't seem bothered, but considering he'd grown up there he probably wasn't, it was the environment he was used to and most everywhere else was too cold and too dry, though it was something he'd gotten used to.

Which was, of course, what prompted the curious head-tilt, "Really? I never noticed." There was an easy amusement behind the statement, because he knew that most people found it unbearably hot and damp.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
The scowl Hobbie shot him bore no real heat behind it as he gave the other man a light shove, "of course you wouldn't but I am a delicate flower unused to such extreme climates."

And if he believed that, Hobbie had some beachfront property on Alderaan to sell him too.
squadless: (windblown)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-17 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
He just smiled, shaking his head, "We'll get you back inside the climate control soon enough." Or at least as close to it as the homestead had. It kept the worst of the heat out, anyway.

Poe took a slight detour past the orchard so that he could pick up some fallen fruit for Stumpy, since much of it would end up in the trench anyway, he had no qualms about making that process faster.

Surprisingly, the trench didn't actually smell like garbage. It smelled a little like standing water, but that was all, there were signs warning not to swim both due to the danger of debris and the danger of being mistaken as a snack. Apparently even just the one Dianoga was enough to clear the organic matter before it could start to decompose and stink the place up.

There was little more than a hold back fence at the edge, nothing that would actually keep anyone out, only knee-high as it was. Poe hefted one of the fruits he'd picked up, winding up and lobbing it out into the water, "Might be sleeping," He commented, "But we'll see."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-19 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Hobbie watched, arms crossed, as Poe tossed the overripe fruit into the trench. "Maybe he'd prefer something fancier."

Pause, thoughtful expression.

"Can dianoga develop refined garbage palates, you think?"

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-24 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
His brow creased a little at that question, thinking it over, "You know, I'm not sure. Might be like ranats that get used to whatever's actually edible in their area and not recognizing other food when they're placed somewhere else."

He shrugged, slinging another fruit out into the trench when the first one sunk, testing to see if it had given in under its own power, or if it had been pulled in, "But I don't know, not the kind of tests I'd want to be in charge of."

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-25 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)

"Be a waste of good food," Hobbie agreed, "your pet doesn't seem to mind, either way."

He wasn't about to actually lean over the trench to get a better look, but Hobbie did squint a little at it, "I think we've got company."

squadless: (downtime)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-07-31 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah we do." He replied, grinning easily, stepping a little closer to that low fence and giving a whistle, a two-tone 'captain on deck' call.

Stumpy didn't heave himself out of the water of the trench, not exactly, but it did, definitely stretch, looming upright, definitely full-grown. Poe, for his part, was still grinning, shifting his weight a little to lob another fruit at the creature, one that was caught deftly and stuffed into its beak.

It was obvious that it was missing limbs, though it was large enough now that what had once been knotted scar tissue was now only visible by the lighter coloration and the gaps where another tentacle should have been, though given as how it kept moving, that was more difficult to tell.

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-07-31 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hobbie tilted his head, looking curiously at the dianoga. He hadn't actually had much in the way of up close and personal experience with them though he'd heard the story of Luke nearly drowning thanks to one in the Death Star trash compactor.

Then he let out a bark of laughter and waved his left hand a little. "Maybe you should've gotten it a metal arm too." Hobbie was probably lucky he'd ended up getting called Hobbie instead of Stumpy himself.

[personal profile] squadless 2016-08-06 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The one on the Death Star -as far as Poe knew, since he'd heard the story as well- had been more than half-starved, as they didn't usually go after anything human or human-sized unless they were desperate.

"Don't know that he's not making himself one with all the scraps down there." He replied with a shrug, still smiling crookedly as he offered one of the fruits over to Hobbie, "You want to make friends?

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-08-14 07:07 am (UTC)(link)

Hobbie accepted the fruit and looked at it speculatively. "A guy could always use more friends in the galaxy." Even if the friend in question was a trash-eating monster.

With a shrug, he tossed the fruit underhanded toward Stumpy for him to catch.

squadless: (browraise)

[personal profile] squadless 2016-08-15 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Poe bit the inside of his cheek to keep from grinning as Stumpy caught that fruit as well, stuffing it into his beak even though he hadn't finished chewing the first one, something that made the creature shriek, a sound like rending metal, or an arc-welder being used underwater.

Poe finally laughed, "That's a good sound, I know it doesn't sound like it, but it is, happy yelling."

sorry it took so long!

[personal profile] rogueskeptic 2016-09-01 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hobbie raised his eyebrows, looking between Stumpy and Poe. "I'll take your word for it," he says finally, all skepticism. "Guess he must like fruit that hasn't been sitting around in a garbage trench for a few days."
squadless: (it might be dangerous)

no worries man, it happens

[personal profile] squadless 2016-09-04 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Poe chuckled, finally grinning as he tossed the last of the fruit to the creature, rewarded with another squall, "That's the last of it, buddy. I'll see if I can bring you more tomorrow."

He gave a shrug then, "Might be, doesn't seem to bother him if it's been sitting for a while. Honestly I think it's the company." Though many of the settlers talked to the Dianoga like it was some sort of community pet, it got excited about it every time.

here we gooooo~
