Intimacy is wonderful, no doubt...but you just can't. For you, you can't let someone in like that, can't let your guard down, or just don't want to. There's also the possibility that you actually cannot be close and candid like that, unless you want to risk their safety and yours. It could, however, be a much more normal case: you were burned in the past by someone, and you don't want that to happen again, or no matter how much of an open book you are in all other aspects of your life, sexuality makes you clam up and retreat.

You just can't be with someone - at least not just anyone.

Until the right person comes along, then everything changes. Their strength, their kindness, or their trust in you makes you trust them; finally, there's someone you can be honest with and be comfortable enough with to explore a side of you that's had to be locked up. Whenever you have an urge, you can turn to a partner who can give you relief. Whether your tastes be a kink you've always secretly had or just a vanilla, consensual connection, don't be hesitant to let go.

[ Sam grins fondly, though his eyes dart at the wings cautiously. It's always hard to gauge how large they are in proportion to things around you and they can hurt. There were plenty of times Sam and Riley had banged each other up. ]

I'm seeing, I'm seeing. Make sure you're careful. Wouldn't want to get your feathers plucked.

[ See, Sam can make bird jokes too. ]

Ha-- ( scott actually laughs at that, but to be fair he'd laugh at anything in a state like this. the first piece of news he heard after leaving prison was about the avengers (how could he not?), and like an idiot watching a saturday morning cartoon he'd latched onto the falcon like a favourite character he never expected he'd meet in his lifetime. now he's beaten the falcon up (regrettably), become allies with the falcon (amazingly), had several conversations prior to this one and some coffee (blessedly), and is wearing his wings. and getting bird jokes for wearing his wings. bird jokes!

oh, he wishes cassie were here to see this. )

I just--oh, jeez, this is amazing-- ( but around his euphoria his mind remembers what sam said: the sensitive wires that could break under folding. the only reason scott stops turning around like a maniac is so he can keep his head turned and look at it properly, canting it to the side a little as he squints. ) But, uh... was this what you were talking about?

( he points with puckered lips to sam's little tech problem. )

[ Sam purses his lips as he gets a closer look. Scott found it quickly and honestly, Sam is impressed.

He simply hides it better. ]

That's it. See how thin the wires are? The machinery is complex and too compact to last very long.

Yeah... yeah I definitely see it now.

( scott rolls his shoulders a little, watching how the wires move in reaction to it and the wings are jostled. his lips purse again, then drag to the right side as he considers. )

I mean, I get why they have to be so thin--turning something that does as much as your wings do into what's basically a pocket-sized version of it leaves for some compromises for space, but...

( his head cocks to the side once more, and he flips the switch to fold the wings and then unfold them again. then he repeats it a few more times, a handful of seconds put in-between every repetition.

looking up, he offers a grin. ) I'll think of something.

[ Sam's eyebrows go up, but the smile never fades. ]

I'm counting on you.

I won't let you down, sir.

( scott decides that making the falcon smile is a lot better than getting to kick his ass personally. )

But, uh--that tune-up thing. We were going to do that, right?

You sure? You'll lose a couple of hours of your life. And that could be spent watching movies.

[ Not that he doubts Scott's enthusiasm, but even Sam's would flag after a while. ]

I spent years of my life in prison. I could go without movies if it means I get to do something good.

( he touches the switch again, folding the wings back in place as he unbuckles everything. ) I mean--if you tell me how it works I could do it on my own.

I kinda miss tinkering to begin with.

Well, you'll need to take them off.

[ Sam's never suffered a crisis of faith. In a way, he has his compass and he follows it without a second thought. Even when the Sokovian Accords were dropped onto their laps, it was simple. You're loyal to people. You're loyal to an ideal. And none of those options were feasible. ]

Got it, got it. ( so he does. scott's tingling, still, from having worn them as long as he had, and when he rolls his shoulders there's a fond smile on his face he can't wipe off. heavy as they'd been, it isn't easy forgetting what the falcon's wings felt like on his shoulders.

he puts them back down. ) And then?

[ Sam crouches on his knees, gestures to a small panel that blends seamlessly with the metal. Stark had added a lot of upgrades, but Sam had kept the blueprints. It's not as though he didn't trust Tony, but Sam needed to know it as well as Tony did.

With the screwdriver, he pries it open. With the wings, Sam is . . . oddly gentle. Not that man himself is particularly brusque, but these wings mean a lot to him. And it means a lot to have them again. ]

Then we've got to work with the joints.

Gotcha. ( scott's already looking for the materials necessary for cleaning for part maintenance. there's a whole new brand of hero worship that awakens in him seeing sam work on his tech the way he does; now all he wants to do is a good job for him. ) Hey, when was the last time you did a tune-up?

[ He ponders that briefly. ]

Some time after what went down on Sokovia. I was on another mission.

[ A mission that has now come to a complete close. Sam still wished he had found Bucky earlier - and saved them all this trouble. Not that it was Bucky's fault. ]

Are you ever not on missions? ( he smiles a bit, happy to watch sam opening and dismantling and trying to memorise what he can at first glance. ) You know, taking a break?

( what first pieces he's allowed to, he cleans with meticulous attention to detail. )

Sounds like you and Captain America are always trying to save the world somehow.

Sure. The jump in activity only happened once I got to know Steve.

[ And everything went downhill? Uphill? Sam isn't even sure some days. It's just been a ride. ]

Before he was just some asshole who kept making fun of me.

And I was the asshole who stole your tech! Maybe you just attract assholes, which really isn't fair considering you're one of the nicer ones around here.

( scott blows very gently after having wiped a certain piece down. )

What'd you do before this? Y'know, before the whole... superhero thing.

I really hope that's not my superpower.

[ Sam glances at his wings, thinking of times long gone. ]

I was a pilot. Now I just help people with PTSD - other veterans like me. I was grounded so . . . [ He shrugs. ] Best to help out where I can.

( sam isn't just a nice guy. he's a great guy. scott actually has to look up from his work just to stare at him, sort of awed.

he wonders what it's like to be able to give so much to so many. )

Sounds pretty Sam Wilson-y. ( not that he knows sam particularly closely, but the image just fits. ) PTSD, though, huh...

Is that why you were a pilot?

Yeah, I mean. Being part of something bigger was just something you went along with at the time.

[ And Riley was always there, so there was no question of what Sam would have done. ]

( scott smiles a bit. )

I wouldn't have known the feeling then, but I sure know it now.

[ He still feels a little bad, especially for Scott's family. ]

You really bailed us out. Cap wouldn't have gotten away.

You were trying to keep a bunch of Winter Soldiers from popping up in the world--figured I should'a helped where I could.

( scott offers a grin. he does miss cassie something awful; wishes he could apologise to the pyms for how poorly he'd acted when he told them he had to save the world. but he's sure there'll be time for that at some point. or at least, he likes to have faith. )

'course, I didn't expect things to turn out like this, but it really isn't the worst that's happened to me. ( having finished his cleaning, scott sets to work getting the machinery itself put together. ) This time I got to tell my little girl goodbye before leaving to be a hero.

[ According to Steve, Zemo had killed the other Super Soldiers. The whole thing was one big twisted game of vengeance and retribution. It made him queasy. Zemo's not the first they have hurt. ]

I'm glad you had that.

I'm glad, too. ( scott smiles a bit, ducking his head to find sam's gaze where it's averted. his head cants to the side gently. ) I don't regret anything, sir.

Don't think too much about it--I mean, I'm sure everyone had some idea of what they were getting into.

[ Sam absorbs that quietly. ]
