When is it acceptable to sacrifice one life for the good of the many?

That's a very good question, and I think the answer is very rarely.

It's acceptable if it's a straight-up trolley problem and it's the life of one against the lives of many. It's also acceptable if the person who will die would be willing to make that sacrifice. I'd die if doing so would save my ship, and so would anyone else there, we knew that when we signed up for that life. Aside from that kind of situation, though, nobody's got those kind of rights over the life of anyone else. 'Good of the many' becomes far too subjective far too quickly.
