A QUESTION FOR A QUESTION

YOU MAY KNOW EACH OTHER ALREADY - OR YOU MAY NOT. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, YOU'RE NOW PASSING THE TIME ASKING EACH OTHER QUESTIONS. IT'S A GAME! A QUESTION FOR A QUESTION. YOU START OFF ASKING YOUR OPPONENT A QUESTION OF CHOICE AND IF THEY ANSWER IT, THEY'RE ALLOWED TO ASK YOU A QUESTION IN TURN. THE RULES ARE SIMPLE, ONLY AS LONG AS YOU ANSWER THE OTHER PERSON'S QUESTIONS ARE YOU ALLOWED TO ASK QUESTIONS YOURSELF, BUT THERE IS NO EXPECTATION OF TRUTHFULNESS HERE, LIE IF YOU MUST OR WANT, JUST KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING.

How to play -
1. Comment with your character's name, fandom and preference.
2. If you want, leave a question in the comment field that your character is asking their opponent. Or don't. I'm not the cops.
3. Pick other characters to question and have fun!

I can't tell you what to do. If you stayed and wanted to become a farmer out on Lorentzen Delta, you'd have my support, because self-determination matters. But if we're presuming you want to stay on the ship, I'd like that very much, and I guess what I'd suggest is - something I found when I was reading about Breakaway, recently. It's very old-fashioned, but it's code-compliant. We could put you in as a starship volunteer, and what that means is that you could spend some time in each department without having to sign up to a lengthy formal contract, and maybe that'll help you know what you're best at.

Did you have any thoughts about what you might like to do?

Well, I would choose to stay on the ship, of course. Over my time here I’ve gotten to know the captain and the crew, and you especially. So I would like to stay on board and make myself useful in some capacity to the ship. The idea of being a volunteer is appealing - I’d like to see what you found do I can make an informed choice, but it sounds like what I’m looking for. As you said, I could try a variety of departments and see what’s best for me individually. I’m adaptable. I think I can find something.

Maybe we should do something to celebrate your discovery?

I know you'll find something. There probably aren't many departments where you wouldn't do well, if you put your mind to it. I'll send you over the relevant information - it's in one of those old commentaries on practical interpretations of spacer code. I was looking at information about the war because I've been asked to speak at the memorial service for Dalia Katril. Apparently we're going to have guests from all over local space including some very senior captains, so I have to avoid saying anything stupid.

I can take a break to celebrate, though. Dinner? I can get us one of those tables in an alcove. Almost private.

Good luck. I'm glad we were able to make sure that she would be recognized, even if she's not alive to see it today. If she could see it I'm sure she would be happy, and she probably does have living relatives. If you want to practice any speeches you need to give, I'm happy to be a sounding board for you. Public speaking can be intimidating, but I'm sure you'll do fine in front of the senior captains. If I was invited, I'll be there. The relevant information will be very helpful, so I'll look it over once it's sent along.

That does sound like a good idea. Dinner at a table in an alcove would be perfect. What would you like to eat?

We may have found a grandson! It isn't confirmed yet, but it's possible. Maybe you could look over my script and tell me what you think of it and if there's anything I've forgotten? I think everyone's invited to the ceremony, but that means it'll probably get crowded, especially if we have lots of guests from other ships. I'll see if I can get you a reserved seat. We'll say it's for diplomatic purposes, since you haven't observed these customs before.

At dinner? I'll have whatever the kitchen's got for us today. Plus some Rivkata cheese I picked up downstation, since it seems like a good occasion for it.

A grandson! That should be interesting. I don't know if I'll have the chance, but I'd love to speak with him. You mentioned that astrogators were older in her time than they are now. As for your script, I'll be happy to look it over, proofread, make any corrections if you need them. And it would certainly be a tremendous honor to attend the ceremony - and observe your customs first-hand. I'd be delighted to take that offer.

Rivkata cheese? Is something special about it? I'm always up for trying new foods. Now that I have an allowance of my own I'm more cautious about what I get. Try to make it last.

We don't know where he is yet, but if he's not close enough to meet in person, you can definitely correspond with him! Thank you. I'll show the script when we next have a bit of spare time.

Rivkata cheese is just my favorite! It comes from a particular colony, and it's far too expensive for the person over in logistics who's responsible for the ship's purchases to buy it for the kitchen here, so I buy it myself when I can. You'll have to try some!

That would be interesting to do! I tend to keep where I come from a secret outside the crew - it's easier for me that way, and I rather enjoy not drawing too much attention to myself. But I'm starting to think I could have a career in spacing.

Then I will! I need to try more of your universe's foods. If I could, I'd let you try some of my homeworld's wines. They're famous. We're primarily an agricultural-focused planet.
