Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

Ergo slept through the night, waking to find another blanket on him. He looked over at Ashley who'd taken over the couch he'd quickly vacated.

Should he stay?...The man had potential to be a good owner, just getting him out of the rut of mourning and loss of his brother would take time.

He'd give him a chance. They couldn't run forever, perhaps it was time they settled down again...

Vincent still needed rest, so he remained in his current form. It was still early, and the human had yet to wake, so he left the living room and went back to the bedroom. If he wasn't going to take the bed, he would. Upon laying down, he realized he still didn't know the master's name. He'd ask when he woke. For now, he went back to sleep, spread out and even more relaxed now that he wasn't on the floor.

Ashley woke to find Ergo gone.

Stricken by his loss, he sat up, chewing at his lip and getting up to search the apartment. It didn't take long to find Ergo in his bed, stretched out and sleeping peacefully.

Ashley watched him, drawn to the savage, dangerous beauty of the dragon in his bed. He sat down in the doorframe, watching, dark eyes wide with interest.

Eventually, he finally woke, and found himself being watched again.

He got up, stretching as much as he could-wings filling the room-before refolding them and went over to him, "Go talk to the landlord already." he said "I'll still be here when you get back" he assured him, moving past Ashley and going to the kitchen.

Hungry, he began looking through what they had. While Vincent and he shared the same body, he was no cook. But simple he was capable of, and he began setting up two plates of this and that. Apple slices, bread, cheese, grapes, and some salted meat. He set one plate aside for Ashley and waited on him.

Ashley's eyes widened in awe at the sight of those massive wings, staring speechlessly.

The landlord. Right. Taking his orders, Ashley went out into the hall. He didn't bother with shoes or shirt, simply padded down the stairs and rapped at the door of the caretaker's apartment. Informing him of the problem, Ashley received assurances that it would be fixed promptly, and then he went back upstairs.

Pleased by the appearance of the food, Ashley sat down at the table and ate. His eyes lingered on Ergo, entirely magnetized by him.

When Ashley returned, Ergo dug into his meal, having settled to sit on the couch as he couldn't sit comfortably at the table. He assumed he completed the relatively easy task of talking to the landlord. He hoped the water would be fixed soon. Washing the dishes had been just as much of a pain as bathing outside the tub to avoid hypothermia.

Feeling the other's eyes on him, he finally asked, "What's your name? You never told us."

"Ashley," he answered. He was slightly surprised, but it was mostly due to Ergo's interest, not the fact that he'd forgotten to introduce himself. "Ashley Raventon. I'm from Louisiana."

He licked his fingers as he ate, somewhere between slovenly and fastidious. "I've never seen anything like you before," he said, though he'd said it before. "What are you?"

His own table manners were hardly better, but he had the excuse that he had not eaten in awhile. Vincent was usually the one that fed them.

Ergo blinked then chuckled at the question. "I'm a dragon" he stated then gestured to his horns and wings-which he spread a little-"Isn't it obvious?" He flicked his tail for good measure. He was lucky enough in the few times he'd been spotted to be mistaken for a very large bat, especially in these parts where exotic pets like big cats were more common than dogs and cats. Dragons were illegal to own, though even in the underground market they were impossible to find. He was likely one of the last.

"I didn't know dragons existed," Ashley said, fingers twitching with desire to touch. "I didn't know anything existed, as magnificent as you."

Standing, he advanced a little closer to Ergo. Carefully, not wanting to spook him. He stopped within reach, not touching, though the desire to do so was almost palpable. Unlike with Vincent, where Ashley had reached out carelessly to touch an ear and had to be reprimanded, he held back, respectful, fascinated.

He finished his plate to find Ashley had come over to him. "We're few." he answered, wondering what he was up to.

He thought a moment before elaborating, "We were used originally for ground fighting. We were the first so-called pets, though it wasn't until dogs-much smaller and with better noses-were created that the idea of creating animals for the public to have became a possible profitable enterprise. As the dragons became obsolete, we were sold to the rich and powerful, and then slowly died off. My memory before Re-l is unclear, that's all she managed to uncover. I do not know how Vincent and I became what we are or if there are any more out there."

Reaching out, shy, tentative, Ashley's fingertips hovered over Ergo's wing. He wanted to touch, but he feared Ergo's displeasure, and wanted very much to please him somehow. "May I?" he asked, fingers twitching with the temptation to touch. "Please?"

He hesitated, then nodded, stretching the wing partially. "Don't yank." he grunted, remembering how rough he'd been with poor Vincent's ear.

The touch of the other felt...strange. Not since Re-l had anyone touched him in such a way.

Ashley was gentle, skimming his fingertips over the wing, exploring and caressing gently. He'd never felt anything like it, and he was awed, running his fingertips down to the base of it and massaging very gently at the leathery skin.

After that, he reached up, caressing lightly at one of Ergo's horns, fascinated by everything about him. "You're so beautiful."

The leather membrane of the wing was smooth and seemed delicate, but it was tough, built to carry the drake for hours in the air.

His horns were solid and strong and he slowly lowered his head for Ashley to touch him more. Beautiful...

He was beginning to like this sort of attention.

Ashley smiled as Ergo leaned into the touch, pleased at the reaction. Settling into Ergo's lap, he explored with gentle, curious touches, caressing Ergo's horns and then letting his hands comb through Ergo's hair and down, back to the wings briefly, massaging around the bases of them. His hands moved from there down Ergo's arms, fingertips light and very gentle, lifting one of Ergo's hands so that he could inspect his claws.

The other climbing into his lap was a surprise, but he let him. He was warm, gentle, and quiet, the weight of him pleasant in his lap.

The massaging and caressing soon had the drake thrumming contentedly, closing his eyes partially. He allowed Ashley to take one of his hands, the white claws that tipped his fingers were blunt from lack of care.

"Like touching me?" He asked quietly with a small smile.

"Yes," Ashley murmured, smiling back at him, wanting to bask in the contented sound that his pet was making. He kept touching, hands skimming up Ergo's arms and down his sides, curling around to gently skim his hands over Ergo's tail. He guided it up, still being very careful, so that he could see and touch, caressing the length of it with gentle, fascinated touches. "You're incredible. Everything about you."

It'd been a long time since he'd been able to lavish any personal care on himself, as a result, the iridescent scales on his tail were not up to par as they ought to be and the more Ashley ran his fingers over his horns, the more imperfections he found.

Up close, he was in pretty bad shape. Still, the muscle beneath the cloak was solid and strong, and with time and care he'd soon be looking magnificent.

The end of his tail curled around Ashley's wrist loosely. "Going to come up with more descriptions of me?" He teased. But he liked them.

Ashley smiled, enjoying the gentle teasing and the way that the tail curled around his wrist. "Yes," he promised, turning his head and pressing a very soft kiss to the side of Ergo's jaw. His grip tightened the slightest bit as he did so, betraying a shade of nervousness, but his touch was still gentle and utterly reverent. "You fascinate me. I want to please you."

The kiss to his jaw was the biggest surprise of all...Not even Re-l had...

Crystal tears welled up and then spilled from the dragon's silver eyes. He leaned into Ashley's touch, lifting a hand to lay over the human's own.

He said nothing, even wrapping his other arm around his master and pulling him close.

Ashley curled into Ergo's grip, resting his head on Ergo's shoulder and nestling close to him. More than anything, Ashley needed to be held, so he took what he could get.

Ergo was warm, and Ashley relaxed into his arms, nuzzling softly at him and just absorbing the contact and comfort for as long as he could have it. For the first time in years, he felt safe, and his heart secured irreversibly onto Ergo because of it.

The embrace seemed to be something they both needed, and the dragon was content to hold his master for a long time.

He withdrew after a bit to look him in the face, lifting a hand to caress his jaw and then his lips with his thumb.

"You're rather gorgeous, you know that?" he purred.

Ashley smiled with pleasure at the praise, holding Ergo's gaze as he kissed the pad of Ergo's thumb. "Yes," he said, because he did very much know. He'd been told many, many times, most often by Arkady, and Ashley valued his beauty above everything else in his life. His own body, though it had suffered significantly from neglect through his grief and depression, had been far less neglected than his surroundings. Ashley kept himself clean, at a minimum, salvaging his beauty.

"Does it please you?" he asked, eyes wicked with promise and sensuality. His lips closed around Ergo's thumb, sucking wetly at the tip of it.

"Hm, yes." he said, flicking his tail, but he withdrew his touch.

Vincent was ready to switch out and there was a lot the pair needed to talk about.

"Off." he said, nudging Ashley's thigh until he got off and he got to his feet. "I'll come out again soon." he said, and, without another word, shifted back into Vincent.

The unicorn moaned at the jarring transformation, and looked around, very confused. "W-What...What happened?"

Oops, Ergo forgot to mention to Ashley that while he could see everything Vincent saw, it didn't work vice-versa.

"I tripped down the stairs..." he said, confirming that was the last thing he remembered. He looked to Ashley, confused and a little shaken.

Ashley obeyed, getting to his feet when instructed.

His brow furrowed slightly as Vincent reappeared, intrigued by the simplicity of the transformation.

Sitting on the edge of the table near him, Ashley shrugged. "Ergo decided that you should stay here."

He kicked his feet idly, wanting Ergo to come back but not minding terribly that he had Vincent's company in the meantime. "The landlord is going to come and fix the hot water heater. Ergo told me to make him fix it, so I did."

Vincent was dumbstruck.

"You...You talked to Ergo?"

Not since Re-l has his other half actually carried out full conversations. And even then, Re-l kept communication to the dragon minimal, though he never knew why...perhaps, though she'd accepted him, didn't much like anyone that intimidating around her.

And the drake told the master to do something and the guy did it?

He wondered what could have happened to make Ergo change their mind about leaving...He'd ask him the details later.

Ashley...

"Your name...is Ashley." he said after a moment, offering a small smile.
