Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

The bed creaked in protest as the large dragon joined Ashley on the bed and he laid down spooning against the human and wrapping an arm around him. He didn't sleep however, merely guarded his master as he took his turn to rest.

He caressed the man's stomach and thigh to try and get him to go to sleep.

"Ergo," Ashley sighed, relaxing into the warmth and comfort. He hadn't had this in years, this comfort and safety, and it filled a deep need within him. "Are you pleased?" he asked, basking in the attention and the soft touches, and the knowledge that the three of them would be safe now.

"You did well considering. Though I ask you to stop giving Vincent a hard time about chores and just do them. He's cutting you far more slack than I would" he grunted.

He buried his nose and mouth into the other's fiery red hair, breathing in his scent and closing his eyes a moment before continuing. "You need to take better care of yourself."

Ashley whined at the reprimand, burrowing back into Ergo's arms. "I'm trying. Don't scold me. We'll hire a maid to come a few times a week. We can afford it now."

Huffing softly with defensiveness and indignation, Ashley put his arm over his face, wanting to hide from responsibility, especially after he'd done so much that was so far out of his comfort zone already.

Ergo hadn't thought of hiring a maid. The apartment, while luxurious, wasn't massive.

Vincent's time wouldn't be cut down due to it either as the dragon was reluctant to show himself to anyone, so the unicorn would still have to be their face when the maid was around.

Still, he wondered how Vincent would take having little work to do. He knew the guy felt useful when he was doing things. Well, he'd still have to cook, and when they went out he'd be the one walking with Ashley.

Ergo gave the man's ear a blunt nip. "Don't retreat in on yourself. I'm here."

"You're disappointed in me for not doing better," Ashley said, but he did relax a little. He wasn't used to being criticized for anything, and had never in his life been punished. It surprised him to find that he was trying at all, that he wanted to gain Ergo's approval.

Turning over, he tangled his legs with Ergo's, nipping softly at his lips, all sweetness and temptation. "Do you want me?" he murmured, because he'd always found that his beauty and sexuality were by far the best way to gain attention and approval from those around him.

"Just not used to having a master like yourself" he grunted before being surprised again by the other's forwardness.

Even Re-l had not cared to have sex with him.

However, he was suspicious about Ashley's behavior. Ergo didn't want him to submit to him in order to distract him or the like.

"I do." he replied. "But not tonight. Get some rest, its been a long day."

Ashley considered that for a moment, processing it through his heart and mind. He brushed his nose against Ergo's once, as he thought, then nodded.

Ergo wanted him. Ergo was not displeased. That was all Ashley needed to know. Even if Ergo hadn't taken him up on his offer, it wasn't a no, it was simply a not now, and that was surprisingly reassuring, since Ashley was exhausted. Nodding, he kissed Ergo's cheek, then rolled over again, spooning back against his pet. This time, emotionally stabilized by Ergo's reassurance, he slipped immediately off to sleep.

Ergo lay awake for some time, keeping guard over his master and contemplating the future they might have together. Eventually he let sleep claim him.

Vincent was the one who woke up curled up against Ashley, and for awhile he lay there, wishing the man cared for him as he did Ergo. Maybe today would be better...

Quietly getting up he went to the bathroom to check and see if the water heater had been fixed yet. Apparently not as cold water still flowed from the tap. He hoped the landlord would make good on that repair soon, he couldn't remember when he last had a hot bath or shower to himself. At the shelter you showered in the open and the handlers rushed you along.

He splashed the cold water on his face to wake up before heading into the kitchen to get some breakfast going.

Ashley woke up alone, hearing sounds from the kitchen and expecting that it was Vincent. He got up and dressed, taking more care with his appearance than he had in some time.

"Morning, Vincent," he said, kissing his cheek and then sitting on the edge of the table, brushing out his long red hair while he waited for breakfast to be ready.

Just when Vincent thought he had the master figured out, he went and did something like that. One day at a time, he reminded himself, smiling back and flicking his tail happily.

"Morning. Hope you like omelettes" he said, having laid a bunch of ingredients out on the counter. he cracked a couple eggs in a bowl, added a bit of water and mixed them together before pouring them into the pan.

"Yes, thank you," Ashley said, kicking his legs idly as he brushed out his hair, taking exacting care to brush through it until it shone.

"What do you want to do now?" he asked, eyes on his hair as the brush moved through the auburn strands again and again. "Now that we have money, we can do whatever you like. Go anywhere. So what do you want to do?"

Vincent looked to him then back to the eggs to make sure he didn't overcook them and to think this over.

Go anywhere...do anything...he didn't know...it'd been so long since such a choice was even open for discussion.

Start simple.

Like what?

How about an amusement park? You both could use the air and fun.

Vincent looked to Ashley. "How about the amusement park?" he suggested. "I've never been on any rides before."

Ashley laughed at the suggestion, tilting his head to one side. "I suppose so. I haven't gone in years. That sounds nice."

An amusement park. It felt so normal. Ashley couldn't remember the last time he'd done something normal. Arkady had never wanted to go to such things with him, considered them puerile.

The unicorn went back to the eggs, pleased that they'd agreed on something together.

After adding the cheese and chives and the like, he flipped the omelette over, let it cook just a bit longer before plating it and handing it to Ashley, doing his own next and pouring them both glasses of juice while he finished making his.

Ashley slid into a chair, setting aside his brush and digging into his food. "Thank you," he murmured, eyes lingering on Vincent, still trying to make sense of this new situation. "That's all you want? An amusement park? What about after that?"

Vincent sat down with his own plate and paused at the question. "I...I don't know just yet...Up until the day before, I was planning on leaving...now I want to stay but..." he looked to Ashley. "One thing at a time...kay?"

New clothes would be nice so a shopping trip this week would be needed...some cookbooks...This and that were needed but the amusement park trip seemed to be the best way to start their time together.

Ashley nodded, giving him a shy little nod. He liked the idea of having a friend. A real friend, maybe. Not just someone who wanted to fuck him, or someone who just put up with him.

"I'm glad you want to stay," Ashley said, giving him a shy, friendly smile. "I like having you here."

Vincent was really starting to feel good about staying. He hoped Ergo had not threatened the guy into being nice to him...

He returned the smile. "Me too." he could say honestly.

With the prospect of going to the park now on the day's planner, Vincent finished his breakfast and went to dress before returning to deal with the dishes while his master got ready.

Ashley didn't take long to dress, leaving his red hair loose down his back. Curious, he came over to watch as Vincent washed the dishes. Paying attention, he took note of what Vincent did, so that he could do it if he was required to. It seemed like a simple enough process.

"Ready?" Ashley asked, once he was finished.

Vincent noted how the man paid attention to what he was doing. He could learn, it would just take time.

He nodded, dried his hands, and then headed out with Ashley to the amusement park. It wasn't a long drive but thanks to the great weather, it took them a little time to find a parking space as it was quite busy.

Vincent took Ashley's hand as they headed through the gates to get their tickets. He looked to Ashley, "Want me to buy them?" he asked, unsure if the other's social anxiety was high.

"Yes, thank you," Ashley said, keeping hold of Vincent's hand and following his lead. The only way he understood to interact with people was when they wanted something from him. He used his sexuality and people responded, giving him whatever he wanted, but he struggled with basic interactions. Vincent gave him some protection against that, and Ashley was pleased, following along obediently as Vincent got their tickets.

Vincent got their tickets and took a moment when they entered to look around.

A thousand smells and sights greeted him. And they were not the only master and pet there which was good because he didn't want more stares than necessary. In the end he decided it best to try the most easy-going ride he saw first, the carousel.

Tugging Ashley along, they waited a couple moments in line before getting on. Vincent climbed onto the first horse he saw and prompted Ashley to get on the one beside him.

As they got on one of the rides, Ashley's demeanor changed, filling with sweet, playful delight. He climbed onto the horse, looking around with interest at the other people and the horses. Ashley got plenty of lingering stares in return, but he didn't notice, focused only on Vincent and the pleasure of being able to play.

The ride started up and Vincent was surprised but thrilled by how fast the ride actually was going. He laughed and closed his eyes briefly to enjoy the free feeling.

All too soon, the ride came to an end and they had to get off.

Vincent was okay with it though, they still had a ton more rides to try.

Next up were Bumper Cars. They were too big to squeeze into one together so they had to take separate cars, which Vincent was fine with because half the fun was bumping into those you knew. A burly tiger chased them both around, eventually Vincent rear-ended him only to be jolted from the side by the tiger's owner. It was all good fun though.

Vincent took Ashely's hand when they got off and they headed to a mirror maze only to read the requirements. No pets with headgear of any sort were allowed as one was likely to bump into the mirrors and crack or smash them. Vincent was a little disappointed but didn't let it get to him as they still had a lot to see and do.

He wasn't quite brave enough to try the coasters yet but the new ride the Sky Drop was open. Deciding it best to try as many of the fast or jolting rides before lunch, Vincent pulled Ashley along to get into line.
