Hello, and welcome to The Care and Keeping of Your Pet! As you surely know, a pet is a big responsibility, and we're so glad you've decided to be a concientious master. A safe pet is a happy pet, and this handbook is certain to keep your precious lifelong friend as content as can be.

The history of the animal person is a long and difficult one, with their origins not being known even to this day. However, scientists believe that despite our common appearance - most animal people have humanoid forms except for the ears, tails, and sometimes teeth - we share no common ancestry, even if the ascent of this species corresponds with that of the homo sapien. We gained dominance over each breed thousands of years ago, beginning with the dog type, who have long been considered "man's best friend." Most breeds these days are docile and perfect for owners of any speed.

Of course, it is our duty as the superior species to take care of these animal creatures, and this is inherent in their genetic makeup. Everyone knows that an animal person, when matched with their correct human master, is loyal for life - a true "soulmate," if you will. Far be it for us to turn this away! Ever since the Great Domestication, these intelligent and loving animals have served us as friends, workmates, guardians, servants, and sexual companions and will for years to come. Despite recent hubbub from so-called "Pet People's Rights Activists," this way of life is wholesome and good. Scientific research shows that the natural desire of the pet person is to be owned and cared for by a human.

So, it's your first pet. What do you need to know?

As previously stated, pet people come in as many breeds as you can possibly think of. By far and away the most popular are the dog and cat types, but exotic birds and lizards have been gaining popularity among trendsetters from L.A. to Tokyo!
All pet types are best suited for certain jobs, and when hunting for one, it is best to search for a type that suits your needs best.
However, a "True Match" - when a pet person bonds with you and only you for the rest of their natural lives - comes naturally, and sometimes takes time before you can find the pet you will be able to give a forever home to.
According to all current research, pet people are completely sentient and like us in many ways. However, it is important to remember that they have many animalistic and feral characteristics. Do not be foolish and think that your pet is a person, despite the facts that many are clothed and may be allowed to read, write, and have "hobbies." Some traditional pet owners may eschew these frivolities, and that is within their right.
Pet people age more quickly than humans, at least physically, and many types have long lifespans. It is not uncommon for pets to be passed through the family. When getting your child their first pet, it's important to keep in mind that just because the pup is tiny now, a grown pet can be jumpy around a small child.
It is important to train a pet. Discipline will be necessary. This does not make you a bad owner. Failure to train early will result in a rebellious pet. Training is especially important if you want your pet to serve as a household servant.
Remember, your pet will be extremely protective of you, especially if you are Truly Bonded. It is best to socialize them early. A socialized pet is a perfect family pet.
These days, unowned and unbonded pet people are allowed to live as strays or "Frees" in certain designated areas. Some even hold "jobs." This is against their best interest, and owners who adopt these strays are to be rewarded. Still, the best place to get pets are from liscenced kennels or breeders.
Some masters find it beneficial to participate in activities with their pets, such as shows and other competitions.
Finally, much has been made about the sexual relationship between pet and master. This is a normal facet of the bond, and humans are sure to find pet people sexually alluring. But beyond that, it is only responsible and prudent for owners to care for their pet's needs. It is a well-known fact that the libidos of pet people are remarkably strong, and when they go into heat, it is usually more convenient for a master to relieve them. There is no risk of pregnancy. All rumors of hybrids are urban legends.
Despite this, masters must remember to not view their pets as romantic partners. Humans should stay with humans.

Needless to say, The Care and Keeping of Your Pet is a bit biased and full of propaganda, but it gives a good idea of the world your character is now AU's into. They are either a pet person or a human master, and what that means for them varies.

So are they a devoted pet or a rebellious animal person looking to buck the system? A generous master or a cruel sexual sadist? Just a normal pet owner? Most likely they're something in between, but when you're raised in this world, it's difficult to see anything different on the horizon.

Rules

Comment with your character and say whether they'd be a master or a pet. Ideally, they could be played as both. Mention what kind of each they'd be and what they'd be like, (ie: "Xx-chan is a bunny girl who is happy to please her master" or "Asterothia is a cat boy who is aloof but loyal to his true master"). For pets, be sure to include features ("wolf ears, tail, teeth).

REMEMBER, pet does not automatically equal submissive and master automatically equal dominant. This is not a BDSM setting though BDSM can be included. How far you want to go with the actual "pet" aspect is up to you, as well. Your pet could just be your slightly-furry roommate or soulmate!

This by now means an all-inclusive list, but it should get you going in the right direction.

First Time Pet/Owner: Usually, pets are gotten at a young age; you're an old dog. Can you learn new tricks?
True Bond: What all masters and pets yearn for...the pet's loyalty and adoration for life.
Love: It's expected for masters to love their pets, but to love them? Romance is strictly forbidden.
Old "Couple": Master and pet have grown together and know each other. You know, know each other.
Loss of Master: The pet has lost their master, perhaps even their True Bond. Is it possible to move on?
Young Master/Older Pet: Pets age quicker than masters, so it's possible to end up with a bit of an "age" difference.
Family Pet: This pet's been raised as part of the family. What happens when their feelings for a family member get more than platonic.
For Your Protection: You don't want to be a master, but you have to take in a pet for their protection lest they be in danger from the general public.
Stray: You're a stray or a "Free." Can you live like this with your biology screaming for you to make a match?
Servant: You're more servant than pet.
All Sex, All the Time: The only purpose for this pet is to service the master, and not in a way that means cleaning their house.
Guard: You're a loyal bodyguard, a service pet. You'll do anything for your master. Anything.
Pet Play: This is for those who prefer to keep their animals on leashes, have them eat from bowls, and keep away from clothing.
Breaking In: Training is important with any pet.
In Love with Another Master...or Pet: To lust after another's master is no better than treason, and to wish to be with another pet just cruel!
Punishment: Bad dog, no nookie!
Heat: All pets go into heat, and it's the responsibility of the owner to take care of this problem. After all, unchecked dry humping kills thousands every year.
Breeding: Breeders know the best qualities in each type and mate the cream of the crop together to continue lines. It's a hobby for some, a calling for others.
Pregnancy: So, about that whole "hybrid" thing. It maaaay be more true than you think, even if pet/human pregnancies are the stuff of salacious tabloids.
Territorial: Hey, hey, other dog person! This is your apartment. Stay the fuck out!
Kennel: Kennels are where unadopted pets are kept. They're generally agreed to be depressing places. Why not volunteer at one, keeping the pets healthy and happy with the kind of affection only humans can show?
Rebelling Against the System: Damn the Man! Pet people are people, too! Just be careful not to get talk. You know what happens to bad pets.
Instant Attraction: You ever just look at someone and know they're the one? That they're...your master? But what if you've been trying to fight it? Well, don't try!
Dominant Pet: You might be the pet, but you call the shots, at least in the bedroom.
Pet Show: Everyone wants to show off how perfect their animal is. Look at that ass! And you'll never believe their special skills...
Therapeutic: Pets, especially those bred for their kindliness, are perfect therapy for those who've been through trauma and heartache.
Jealousy: Who's that around your master? Oh, hell no. They better not be touching them!
Petting: Pet people are absolutely gaga for being touched. Even the most steely ones turn to mush for rubs.
Games: Playing with your pet and giving them exercise is a key to happiness. Of course, with a pet person, you might want to use other toys instead of a ball.

Ashley changed into pajamas and put cream on his face, losing track of Vincent in the meantime. Searching for him, he was puzzled to find Vincent curled up in the corner again.

Crouching by Vincent, Ashley poked at him. He'd never understood this determination for the corner, and he didn't think it could possibly be comfortable. "Why are you on the floor again? There's a couch and a bed. Why do you like the floor so much?"

Vincent groaned, having just drifted off only to be woken.

"Wha?...Oh...I don't know, used to it I guess..." he mumbled, but to keep the other from nagging him, he got up, taking his pillow and blanket and headed for the bedroom in the event Ergo shifted as the dragon couldn't fit on the couch.

Again, he curled up under his blanket, "Wake me up if you get hungry" he said through a yawn, though after the big lunch they had, they'd likely just have cereal or something simple if anything. He fell back to sleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

Satisfied when Vincent curled up in the bed instead, Ashley left him alone. He went to curl up on the couch, a blanket over his lap. He felt tired, but didn't want to sleep. As much as he'd enjoyed the excursion, he felt lonely, wanting to ask for Ergo again but also not wanting to make Vincent feel unwanted.

So he just sat awake, emotionally processing through everything that had happened.

Vincent expected Ashley to join him, so when he didn't, Ergo woke him and the unicorn left the bed and came back into the living room. Finding Ashley on the couch in his thoughts he took the man's hand and pulled him back to the bedroom.

"Come on." he said, so exhausted but not wanting Ashley to disappear inside himself.

The dragon then took over and climbed into the bed.

"Lay down and rest" he rumbled.

Ashley obeyed, nestling into the bed and gently winding his arms around Ergo's neck. "I never see you," he murmured, hugging close to him. "You're always Vincent, except when we're sleeping. If I sleep, you'll just... you'll just be gone again when I wake up. I don't want to."

Brow furrowing with frustrated longing, Ashley tucked his face against the side of Ergo's throat, hiding his expression.

"It's barely been two days since I revealed myself to you" he chuckled. "And most of this day was spent at the park. I'd likely cause a panic if I shifted to what I am. Besides, I'm too big for the rides." he pointed out.

"We're home now, get some rest. I'm not going anywhere." he said

Somewhat pacified by that logic, since it was true, Ashley pressed a soft kiss to the side of his throat. "Will you spend tomorrow with me?" he asked, willing to bargain obedience and good behavior for time with Ergo.

Cuddling now rather than clinging, Ashley relaxed, eyes closing with fatigue.

"So long as we don't need to go anywhere, of course." he answered.

Vincent had had a lot of excitement today and surely wouldn't mind getting some rest.

He stroked Ashley's back and closed his eyes, ready for a nap himself.

When Ashley woke, he was still in Ergo's arms. Happy and grateful, Ashley nuzzled softly at him, sitting up partway and deciding that he wanted tea.

"Hungry?" Ashley asked, kissing Ergo's cheek and then wiggling out of his arms, padding barefoot to the kitchen to put on the kettle for tea.

Ergo woke when the other stirred and smiled at the kiss. He liked that affection...

He stretched, spreading his wings to the fullest he could before refolding them and following his master to the kitchen. He sat at the island, wrapping his tail around the legs of his stool "Know how to make anything?" he asked.

"Tea," Ashley responded, with a little smile over his shoulder. He put two teabags in mugs, then took the last few pastries out of the fridge and brought them over to the island. The tea water was still heating, so he stepped close into Ergo's arms, leaning in to see if he could get a kiss.

The dragon wasn't very fond of sweets, Vincent was. Still, the tea sounded good and he had to eat something otherwise he'd go to bed hungry.

Ashley was far more affectionate than he initially took him for, and the drake was happy for the attention, even pulling the man to sit facing him in his lap. He didn't kiss him, but instead rubbed his cheek against the man's own, a deep thrumming coming from him. Every day he felt a bit more happy and content to where fate had landed him.

"Did you check to see if the water heater is working yet?" he asked, the idea of a hot bath tonight very appealing.

Ashley giggled with surprised delight at Ergo nuzzling at him and the purring sound he made. He loved being in Ergo's lap, looping his arms around Ergo's neck to keep close to him. "Not yet," he said, basking in being the focus of someone's attention and affection like this. "Shall we?"

He'd have to get up for that, and didn't want to after he'd only just claimed Ergo's lap. His mind went to the idea of a hot bath with Ergo, which he liked very much, wondering if Ergo would allow Ashley to see him naked.

"Hm...not yet, tea first." he said, stroking the other's long red hair. He felt less like the pet and more like the master like this. A strange but good feeling, and he knew it wasn't too unusual, many pets were submissive but the more exotic tended to be less so.

He gave Ashley's shoulder a pat when the kettle began to whistle.

Making a sound of contentment as Ergo started petting him, Ashley relaxed into it, hugging him a little tighter.

He gave a tiny whine as the kettle whistled, reluctantly getting to his feet. He poured the water, adding milk and sugar and then bringing the mugs over. Sliding back into Ergo's lap like he belonged there, he blew on his tea, starting to nibble on one of the pastries while his foot curled idly around Ergo's calf, enjoying the simple pleasure of sitting in someone's lap.

Ergo was quiet as he too enjoyed his tea and the orange flavored scone, his warm breath gently ghosting the back of the other's neck as Ashley sat contently in his lap.

Small talk was unneeded, they were growing comfortable with one another to not need to talk about frivolous things.

When the tea was gone, Ergo got up, waited for Ashley to put the rest of the pastries back in the fridge before following him to the bathroom. Fortunately it was big enough for the dragon but not for both of them in the tub.

"Wash me first, then I'll do the same for you. No flowery soaps though," he said, working to get his cloak off, tossing it into the hallway along with his pants and boots. He was black from head to toe, iridescent scales like those on his tail also spotted along his joints and trailing along his spine. He was nicely muscled and nicely built between the legs as well. After letting Ashley admire him a moment, he turned the faucet on and was glad to feel it warming up. The landlord had come through and they had hot water again. When it was a comfortable temperature, he plugged up the drain and let the tub fill.

Ashley laughed at the stipulation. "You don't like flowers?"

Eyes widening as Ergo's clothing came off, Ashley swallowed, cheeks flushing with desire as he admired Ergo's body and all the iridescent scales accenting him. "We should look for somewhere with a bigger tub. It'd be nice to bathe together."

Sitting on the edge of the tub, Ashley watched Ergo through low-lidded eyes, trailing his fingertips along Ergo's skin as he waited for the tub to fill.

"I do but most soaps are too flowery for my senses." He didn't like the thought of his sense of smell being blocked by roses all the time. On Ashley it was okay, but on himself, not so much.

Ergo was surprised at the thought of moving but he was right, the tub was only just big enough for him and as Ashley favored him over Vincent, having a bigger place in general might be needed.

Maybe a place in the woods so he could go outside...

He settled in the tub and let it fill before shutting it off. He swished his tail in the water, "Might want to undress yourself or you'll likely get your clothes wet." he pointed out.

That was very quickly proven as Ashley had to dodge a wave of water as Ergo's large body sank into the tub. He laughed, stripping out of his clothes and setting them in a messy pile on the counter. "I meant to ask you," Ashley said, taking the washcloth and beginning to gently wash Ergo's neck and shoulders, giving especial attention to the bases of his wings. "What do you want? Now that we have money, we can go anywhere. Do anything you please. If we move, we don't have to stay in Paris. When I asked Vincent, all he wanted was the amusement park."

Ergo chuckled at that. "You have to remember that for six months we were cooped up in a cell most of the time, little better than prisoners, worse even as only those who'd been spayed and neutered could interact freely. To avoid overrunning the shelter with new entries." he added, turning around when prompted to let Ashley wash his back. "Its the little things he thinks about first."

He closed his eyes and enjoyed the the simple pleasure of being washed, thinking over what he wanted.

"Well your idea of a larger place is a good start." he replied. "Somewhere out of the city so that I don't have to be cooped up all the time."

"Vincent and I will start looking for places." Ashley took great care with Ergo's wings, dexterous fingers washing every surface with a soap that smelled lightly of oatmeal and vanilla. "Any other stipulations? We're rich, I guess. You can have anything you want. Feel free to be demanding."

Ashley smiled, enjoying the task and purpose of caring for someone. He liked being able to spoil Ergo, and it was nice that they had the luxury of money to cater to all three of them.

The light scent was good, soothing and smelled rather good. He spread one wing to let Ashley wash it and then the other after the suds were rinsed off.

Anything? That was almost overwhelming and yet it wasn't. While dragons were thought to be materialistic, Ergo really wasn't. He had good food, good company, and once they moved they'd have a better place to live.

"Nothing for the moment. A new place to live is priority. After that, we shall see. Once settled I'm sure I can build around what more I want" he replied. After all, anything they bought now would have to be moved and unpacked. No sense adding to everything just yet. He'd give his input through Vincent when they started looking for places. Big and isolated were a good start.

"Okay. A new place it is," Ashley promised, continuing to wash Ergo. He loved being able to explore his body like this, leaning over to kiss his cheek once he finished washing his wings. "Wet your hair and I'll shampoo it for you," he said, hands lingering on Ergo's skin, unable to stop touching him.

Ergo liked that the other liked touching him...

He did as he was told and dunked his whole head under the water a moment before resting his chin on the side of the tub to allow Ashley to reach and wash his hair-and horns-properly.

When finished, he hauled himself out of the tub to let his master scrub his tail next. He did his private bits himself before getting out entirely and refilling the tub for Ashley. He dried off, and if he was quite handsome before, he was stunning now, his scales far less dull and the dried flakiness of his horns all scrubbed off. Once dry, he sat on the edge of the tub and waited for Ashley to get into the water to take his turn.

Ashley's eyes widened at the beauty of him, staring openly.

Cheeks flushing, he looked away at last, sliding into the warm water. His long hair spilled all around him in the water, blood-red tendrils wrapping around his body. Suddenly shy, because he'd never had anyone wash him since he was a child, he kept his eyes averted, watching Ergo only from his periphery as the water filled.
