The Courtly Love Meme

That's COURTLY LOVE. Not COURTNEY LOVE.

Courtly love or domnei was a medieval European conception of nobly and chivalrously expressing love and admiration. Generally, courtly love was secret and between members of the nobility. It was also generally not practiced between husband and wife.

The "courtly love" relationship is modeled on the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege lord. The knight serves his courtly lady (love service) with the same obedience and loyalty which he owes to his liege lord. She is in complete control of the love relationship, while he owes her obedience and submission.The knight's love for the lady inspires him to do great deeds, in order to be worthy of her love or to win her favor. Thus "courtly love" was originally construed as an ennobling force whether or not it was consummated, and even whether or not the lady knew about the knight's love or loved him in return.

The "courtly love" relationship typically was not between husband and wife, not because the poets and the audience were inherently immoral, but because it was an idealized sort of relationship that could not exist within the context of "real life" medieval marriages. In the middle ages, marriages amongst the nobility were typically based on practical and dynastic concerns rather than on love. The idea that a marriage could be based on love was a radical notion. But the audience for romance was perfectly aware that these romances were fictions, not models for actual behavior. The adulterous aspect that bothers many 20th-century readers was somewhat beside the point, which was to explore the potential influence of love on human behavior. The behavior of the knight and lady in love was drawn partly from troubadour poetry and partly from a set of literary conventions derived from the Latin poet Ovid, who described the "symptoms" of love as if it were a sickness. The "lovesick" knight became a conventional figure in medieval romance. Typical symptoms: sighing, turning pale, turning red, fever, inability to sleep, eat or drink. Romances often contained long interior monologues in which the lovers describe their feelings.

There's always been tension between the two of you, a will-they-won't they kind of vibe. Perhaps you're even romantically involved, if that's your way. But for some reason, you haven't taken the next step yet.

Now, though, you're finally ready to be sexually intimate.

How to Play:
★ Comment with your character and preferences.
★ Comment to others.
★ Play out the scene.

Prompts:
☆ First Time: This is your first time having sex, so it was something to approach with caution.
☆ Unsure: You're uncertain of your skill or prowess or even how to go about this.
☆ Uncorrupted: One of you is more innocent, younger, more inexperienced, and the other doesn't want to take that away.
☆ Differences: The two of you are different enough - perhaps even different species - that intimacy may be an issue, but you're ready to attack it head on.
☆ Taken: You aren't "together," and one of you is involved with someone else. This is the big decision to do an act that may be viewed as heinous.
☆ Forbidden: There's been no sexual contact because it's utterly forbidden, be it incest, class difference, enemies, etc.
☆ Realization: Maybe you'd been friends, but this is the first time you've really seen them in that light.
☆ Otherwise Distracted: Whether it be a job, a holy mission, or anything else along those lines, you've just been too busy to be with someone like that because it would take your mind away from what you have to do.
☆ Finally Free: Before, you just didn't have the chance. Now you do.

Space. Space is awesome. You should totally explore it, and you should totally do it as part of the Star Trek universe. Here are the ~~rules~~ recommendations to help you explore this amazing canon, no matter what your medium or canon source.

1. Comment. Optionally, you could pick a role for yourself and a brief sample scene for people to tag into. You could also just leave it completely open. Or you can do BOTH and maximize your RP potential!
2. Make sure to mention your preferences! If you're here for beginning CR, if you're looking for a romance, if you want to find wild and wacky antics amongst the Klingons, etc.
3. TAG OUT! Star Trek is all about meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. Try to tag at least one person with each character you drop in.
4. Choose a scenario! Don't feel limited to the choices below, but if you need RNG to help inspire some kind of starting point, a list has been provided.
5. Live long AND prosper.

Possible Scenarios

1. Fresh New Faces - You've just enrolled at Starfleet. Now it's time for SHENANIGANS ON CAMPUS. Study hard, make new friends, or enlist as a teacher to help mold these young minds. And of course, there's the infamous Kobayashi Maru test to take...

2. Academy Buddies/Rivals - You were assigned to the ship along with someone you knew very well back at Starfleet Academy. Will you work together? Will old grudges still follow through now that you're no longer cadets?

3. Department Heads - There are a lot of people in charge of a lot of departments. Engineering, Security, Medical, Navigations...either way, someone's in charge, and officers need to report in, do paperwork, take on missions... Is your department head someone to look up to, or is he/she an overbearing asshole? Are YOU the overbearing asshole department head?

4. I Am the Captain - Congratulations, you have your very own ship! What the hell are you going to do with it? Recommended: not flying the ship into a sun.

5. Suddenly Crossover! - You do not belong in this universe. Somehow, you wound up here anyway, and Starfleet's here to check you out (or vice versa). Are you an ally, or an enemy?

6. Crew Social - Not everything's about diplomatic aliens and hostile killer space entities. Sometimes you just have to attend a meet-n-greet to relax and get to know your fellow crewmates. It could be taking a meal at the mess hall, grabbing a drink at the relaxation center, or a formal dance arranged by the captain.

7. Diplomatic Mission - One of you is Starfleet, the other one isn't. You're here to convince this race to align with Starfleet to share knowledge, peace, and prosperity. Or it's a TRAP.

8. Away Mission - Exploring a new planet in space isn't without its dangers. Hopefully you're not wearing a red shirt. Oh, you are? Oh. Oh I'm so sorry.

Beauty and the Beast. Bulma and Vegeta. ~~Bert and Ernie.~~ Some of fiction's greatest couples and romances haven't been the expected, love at first type sorts (at least not mutual love at first sight...). There's something more fulfilling in the UST and undisclosed desires that come from the pairing of the opposite, the unlikely, or the unexpected, like two hotheads, a geek and a bad girl, an evil villain and a pure-hearted heroine. And you know what's even better? The realization of all that tension - maybe even tension you never realized before.

This meme is for examining the sexual aspects of an opposites attract or unexpected pairing. Have these two been together despite all the odds, or is this the first burst of realization that "hey, I want to fuck you like an animal?" Whatever the case may be (genuine affection, sexual attraction, a one-night stand, an attempt to ruin them - I mean what), you're together in the Biblical sense.

Remember, though, there's lots of ways to interpret this meme. "Opposites" doesn't necessarily have to mean opposite personality. It can be radically different upbringings, worldviews, species, sexual experience, and a plethora of other things you can think of. Unexpected gives you a whole world of options, and unlikely can mean characters from radically different canons that you've never even thought of throwing together.

So have fun! Go out on a limb and be adventurous. Just don't be too crazy---
