How It Works

Sometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play. That's where this meme comes in! The point here is to play with someone you've never played with before, OR play with a character/canon you're unfamiliar with. The prompts provided include mundane activities, chance meetings, platonic fluff, romance/smut, fighting, and crack. This is pretty much the granddaddy of meme variety, so there should be something for just about everyone. INSTRUCTIONS - Comment with you character(s). In the subject field, put all the info that's relevant + any preferences. - Reply to others. Remember, the goal is to play with new people! - The initial set of prompts is in this post. He's been less than fine for quite a few centuries, so he is, at the very least, status quo.

"I've caught where you come from and what you do, but why are you here?" He minds the traffic, and leads her across the street when it's clear and on into the park.

[She debates which answer to give him. She settles for the most basic.]

Looking for my friend, the Doctor. There are troubles back home. Major troubles. He can't come back yet, but I seek his advice.

[Her smile turns wistful and her voice soft.]

Earth always was his favorite...

"I've known doctors, but... I'm not certain any of them would be the man you seek. My friends are few, now. I wish you luck in finding him." His pace is a little slow, but perfect for a casual stroll, and the path under their feet is paved. This park seems to be popular, but not overly crowded.

[She smiles a bit more broadly at his remarks. She's grateful for the slow pace - though it is a change for her to be casual rather than stately.]

If you had met him, you would remember him. He makes quite an impression on people. [She pauses.] There must be more you wish to know... though, at your age? Perhaps not.

"I thought I'd work my way through the essential basics, first." He gives her a faint smile. "The next one is how. Although I suppose if you're so much more advanced, interplanetary travel is nothing to you..." He'll let the 'at your age' bit slide.

[She'll not just give this answer away.]

More than that. We're called Time Lords for a reason....

[And though age isn't everything Time certainly is.]

Our blessing and curse is that we can see time. All that is, was, could be and must not be...

Horvath considers this for a long moment. "I'm afraid I'd be inclined to see the curse aspect of that better. You travel all directions through time, as well?" There's no incredulous looks here, as a sorcerer he's willing to accept all kinds of things.

Anymore and I agree with you about the curse. It is why every so often we get renegades. We are sworn to watch over and protect Time and the Universe - never to interfere. The burden of letting things play out... can be overwhelming.

[She nods when he correctly assumes that they can travel in time.]

Usually with a TARDIS. T-A-R-D-I-S: Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. But, there are of course, other methods.

"It can be hard to stand idly by and let things play out as they will... but equally hard to suffer the consequences of involvement." He nods, having tried both approaches to life.

"I've heard of sorcerers dabbling in time magic, but it's generally not advised..."

[She almost laughs at his last remark, almost.]

And I have heard of Time Lords dabbling in sorcery. Also not advised.

"Oh? So there are those who do both? However dangerously..." He knows something of time travel through sorcery, far more than most, but he's also wise enough not to make use of it just because he has the knowledge. "You and I both had better keep our eyes open for those..."

[She nods in agreement.]

Tell me... [Her voice is trying to be gentle, but it's important.] After Merlin died... Did others come about, in attempt to keep the name alive?

[bitterguardian]

He frowns mildly. "...Impersonating him, you mean? Quite possibly. I left, once the details were seen to. Certainly his name and history has become severely muddled with myth since that time..." It's downright painful sometimes, seeing the weird fictions spawned out the history Horvath himself lived through.

[romana2]

Perhaps impersonating him. It's hard to tell with the Doctor, it seems in Earth history whenever there's a wizard or a magician, it ends up being him...

[But if this man witnessed Merlin's death. Was it the real Merlin or an impersonator himself?]

[bitterguardian]

"I wouldn't go that far, my dear. He's not me, for instance. And the Merlin I knew came from Cymru, not Gallifrey." She may have to learn eventually that the universe doesn't necessarily revolve around the Time Lords as much as they'd like to think it does.

[Doubtful she will ever learn that. That is a lesson for the sole survivor of the Last Great Time War to learn.]

You'd be surprised the way he's meddled in Earth's affairs. The Great Fire in Rome? His fault... sort of.

"I see. That's a bit before my time, I'm afraid." He smiles a little, but he's privately amused by her own ethnocentricity, after she accused humans of that.

[Difference between Humans and Time Lords: Time Lords have been in existence long enough to make such a claim.]

Time doesn't mean the same to us as it does to you....

"No, I suppose not... but I'm not certain it means quite the same thing to me that it does to most people here, anymore." He says reflectively.

That would be a fair assessment.

[She looks at him for a long moment.]

Do you wish for death?

[Oh that came out a bit blunt.]

He glances at her sidelong, but there's no eyebrow raise, he's just considering his words. "Not... actively. But I do look forward to the end of my quest. Some days, I'd... simply like for it all to be over. I never asked to be burdened with a mission, and I didn't fully realize the implications when the immortality spell was placed on me. I'm not certain even Merlin himself could foresee just how long this would take... I'm... a little tired. I don't have much left to go on, but my duty."

You know your quest then? I mean, the details that you need to accomplish?

[Romana sighs.]

Duty... I was groomed for the presidency from a very young age. When I was assigned to the Doctor... The things he showed me... [She's wistful.] I stayed in a different universe, just so I wouldn't have to assume the role. And here I am... President anyway.

[bitterguardian]

"I'm to find his heir, the Prime Merlinian, and train them..." He trails off briefly, thinking. "I wandered for a while, at first. I didn't have the first clue how to find his heir- I still don't, really, and I was also given an item to protect, and every enemy Merlin had became mine..." It's a loose parallel, but he understands being reluctant about duty.

[Romana is shocked.]

And 1400 years later and you still haven't found this person?

[She'll stop before she starts to plant seeds of doubt.]

He turns away briefly, taking a slow breath. "Believe me, the thought that I've missed them has occurred to me... we're also approaching a millennium mark, however. It's possible... the prime Merlinian and the events destined to follow him will line up with the turning of the calendar."

It's a little late, he's had plenty of time to have doubts already.
