How It Works

Sometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play. That's where this meme comes in! The point here is to play with someone you've never played with before, OR play with a character/canon you're unfamiliar with. The prompts provided include mundane activities, chance meetings, platonic fluff, romance/smut, fighting, and crack. This is pretty much the granddaddy of meme variety, so there should be something for just about everyone. INSTRUCTIONS - Comment with you character(s). In the subject field, put all the info that's relevant + any preferences. - Reply to others. Remember, the goal is to play with new people! - The initial set of prompts is in this post. "Ordinarily, I'd agree. Magic is much the same way. The untrained can be... disastrous, and tend to lead short and very eventful lives if no one finds them to take on as a student..." He limps to a small grouping of chairs, prods one lightly with his cane, then offers her a seat.

"But this place operates on rules entirely its own, and does provide a number of educational practices. It also... seems to have a resilience, or perhaps some safeguards. I'm not entirely certain the place isn't sentient, but I haven't studied it overmuch."

[She takes a seat and smiles.]

Most universes do operate on their own rules. And all universes appear to be sentient. Though, most of the time it can be explained through scientific means.

"I'm afraid I'm really only familiar with my own universe and this place. I do realize it's... ill-advised, to muck about with such things." He takes a seat facing her, stretching out his left leg comfortably.

"It's one of those things we always advise students against. Sorcery can be used to manipulate time, but the repercussions are too vast and unforeseeable. But... this place, it seems different somehow. Or perhaps I've been lulled into a false sense of security." He's still not about to give it up.

Complacency is the biggest danger of all.

[She sighs.]

Sorry, that is always one of my biggest worries.

"Mm." Horvath frowns a little, feeling very much the picture of complacency itself now that he's settled in a chair with his leg stretched out and a hand across his stomach. He's tired, though, and that's not from being complacent, either.

"Perhaps, but look around you. If you want to warn your people about this place, be my guest, but it's done me and everyone I've spoken to here far more good than harm, and I suspect any efforts to squash it will meet with resistance." He glances away. "From myself, as well, I'm afraid." He's not trying to sound aggressive about it, but he's not giving up the connection this place has given him to another Balthazar.

[She chuckles with a tone of irony.]

You are quick to forget that I have no way to contact my people. If I did, I certainly wouldn't be stranded on Earth.

[bitterguardian]

"I suspect you could find a way, easily enough, from this place. Unless you're afraid of the cosmic repercussions?" He gives her an arch look.

[And she gives a look of her own.]

I am always worried about such things. It is the burden that comes from the title I carry.

[bitterguardian]

"Understood, but there's a line between paying attention to the ripples of your actions, and being paralyzed by it." He's no timelord, but he does have a better understanding of these things than most people.

It is not my action that worries me. It is the action of those who don't know what they are doing.

[bitterguardian]

"You have no control over that." He runs a hand briefly over his face, as his thoughts turn to the Balthazar of his own world, a loose cannon whose actions have shaped the course of history in ways no one else alive is aware of.

Perhaps not, but it does not mean that I should do nothing to....

[She stops seeing his expression.]

I don't mean you... But you know the burden of which I speak.

[bitterguardian]

Horvath takes a moment to respond, pulling his dark gaze from somewhere far away back to the present. "No, no, education is an excellent idea. I fully support that. But in the end sometimes you simply have to hope for the best and clean up the wreckage left by the mistakes of others."

While I agree with you in principle... In my line of work, that typically means that there won't be anything to clean up because nothing will exist anymore.

[It's actually said quite gently, considering the serious topic they are discussing.]

[bitterguardian]

"Perhaps. I realize the enslavement of humanity and ultimate destruction of a single world may seem insignificant by comparison, but despite the smaller scale I do have some idea of the responsibility." He sighs, feeling a little too weary to sound angry about it.

You think I do not care about a single world or species?

[She pauses.]

You have misjudged me. The disappearance of a single world can have far reaching effects. Time Lords... [She taps the side of her head.] We can sense such changes.

[bitterguardian]

"I never said that... nor meant to imply it." He looks slightly apologetic. "I merely meant that I have some understanding my world is very far indeed from the center of the universe. In the scope of all time and space... well. I'm not a time lord, so I couldn't really say how unimportant we may be, but..." He shakes his head a little. "I have no extraordinary sense for these things, I've simply had to learn to think about it as much as I'm able."

Ripples in a pool - we're all connected. In one sense, there's no such thing as insignificant.

[That doesn't mean Time Lords aren't superior, they simply are.]

[bitterguardian]

"I'm not sure if that's reassuring, or terrifying." He smiles weakly.

It's often both. Sometimes at the same time.

[bitterguardian]

"I suppose it is. Frankly, I'd rather be insignificant. Then I could do what I liked."

[romana2]

[Romana chuckles softly.]

The universe would be a much kinder place if that's how it worked.

[bitterguardian]

"Perhaps it would... but it might not be one if I pretended what I do does not matter, when I know otherwise." That's the cruelty of the world right there, being burdened with the knowledge of how your actions affect everything else.

[romana2]

[She sighs sympathetically.]

And you only have one world. Sometimes I feel like the whole of creation rests upon me.

We might be getting on the wrong track, here. My point - and the concern of my people - is that the tiniest thing does matter. Which is why a place like this... is cause for great concern.
