How It Works

Sometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play. That's where this meme comes in! The point here is to play with someone you've never played with before, OR play with a character/canon you're unfamiliar with. The prompts provided include mundane activities, chance meetings, platonic fluff, romance/smut, fighting, and crack. This is pretty much the granddaddy of meme variety, so there should be something for just about everyone. INSTRUCTIONS - Comment with you character(s). In the subject field, put all the info that's relevant + any preferences. - Reply to others. Remember, the goal is to play with new people! - The initial set of prompts is in this post. "He's... around, yet. We've... come into conflict more than once, over the centuries." He taps his prosthetic leg meaningfully, with the cane.

"Once he found out Veronica was in the Grimhold, he started trying to get it from me, too. I don't think he cares about Morgana. If she were released, without the Prime Merlinian around to stop her, she could destroy the world... but all he wants is Veronica back."

[She nods when he acknowledges his leg, she had figured as much, but confirmation is always good to have.]

And... is Veronica alive still? After all these years? How do you know she hasn't killed Morgana if they were trapped together?

[Sorry, Romana doesn't know and needs to.]

He closes his eyes a long moment and rubs at them, looking pained. His voice is soft. "I don't know. I have no way of knowing."

[She rests a hand on his arm in support, nearly comfort.]

Then get rid of the Grimhold. Somewhere no one will find it. It sounds like it's not worth the risk, one way or another...

His eyes open, eyebrows rising. "I have a responsibility to guard it, until I find and train the Prime Merlinian. I can't just abandon it somewhere her remaining followers might get it." He takes that duty very seriously. It's all he's got.

I didn't mean for you to discard it. I meant, what if there were somewhere safe to put it. You know about 'magic' - what about another dimension?

[bitterguardian]

He gives her a slightly skeptical look, as if he can hear those quotation marks. "I've... done that, on a temporary basis, before. I generally prefer to be able to keep an eye on it more directly. Merlin's dying request was that I guard it, and his ring..."

His ring... is the Grimhold?

[Romana is just trying to piece things together. It's not unheard of for one item to serve in multiple capacities.]

[bitterguardian]

"No, no, they're two separate items. I am the guardian of both."

[romana2]

Must be a terrible burden....

[Romana wouldn't want such a burden.]

How do you keep the Grimhold safe, then?

[bitterguardian]

He shrugs, a little stiffly. "There was no one else left to bear it. I have my duty... and it's something to keep going for."

He shifts his bad leg a little, getting more comfortable. "I hope you'll understand if I don't feel like giving out specific details to someone I've just met? I keep it close, and heavily warded."

[She nods. And changes the topic, slightly.]

What happened to your leg?

[It was spoken gently.]

[bitterguardian]

"Mm... Balthazar happened. But that was back during the first World War." He's had time to adapt, even though he's still bothered by the handicap.

[romana2]

[Weighted look.]

So you said earlier. I was hoping for the expanded version.

[bitterguardian]

"Ah." He looks slightly apologetic. "I was serving in the British army, trying to keep the damage from being any worse than it had to be. After a charge, he caught me out in the field. He'd been looking for me... not serving either side, just stumbling through the chaos into the fringes of battle. He demanded the Grimhold, and he was... he'd become more unhinged than I'd ever seen him, up until that point. He wouldn't believe me that I didn't have it with me, and we fought. He must have searched me, after I passed out, but why he did me no further harm I couldn't quite say. Perhaps for old time's sake, or perhaps because he hoped I'd lead him to it later.
When they found me, they assumed I'd stumbled onto a landmine. I woke up in hospital."

[Romana nods understanding now. Of course the primitive medicine would leave him in such a state. She knew of places that could make him whole again. But, she'll not mention that.]

And you don't know where he is now? You can't... sense him?

[bitterguardian]

"Not offhand. It's possible I could track him down, but... what would I do with him if I did?" After the greater part of a century, he's more or less used to making do with a prosthesis.

[romana2]

[Romana grows quiet for a long moment.]

Could you put him in the Grimhold as well? He could have Veronica, and you wouldn't have to release Morgana.

[bitterguardian]

He blinks at her, but looks deeply thoughtful. The Balthazar he's met through the Nexus apparently dealt with Horvath's alternate just that way, so it's not a completely off the wall idea.

"I... suppose that I could. Assuming I got the jump on him in time to carry it out."

[romana2]

[Well the Presidency on Gallifrey is more than just a figure head.]

Maybe you wouldn't have to be ahead of him. Maybe offer it to him.

[Why cause war when it can be done peacefully.]

[bitterguardian]

He raises an eyebrow, but looks thoughtful all the same. "Depending on what frame of mind he's in at the time, he might consider that, or just try to blast my other leg off. He's... unstable. I'd have to consider my approach carefully."

[romana2]

[She nods.]

Of course. I was only thinking of alternative solutions.

[She's a president: give her a problem, she needs to solve it.]

[bitterguardian]

"I'll certainly consider it. I feel responsible for him." He's actually going to put serious thought into that. It just may be the best resolution there can be.

[romana2]

Why do you feel responsible for him? After all he's done...

[She's genuinely confused by that. Humans are confusing creatures.]

[bitterguardian]

"We were like brothers, once, and... I was the oldest." He still feels like the older brother, even after all that's happened.

"He's not in his right mind, and if I hadn't been too blinded by jealousy, I might have seen what was going on in time to prevent that." His voice remains calm, but his hand tightens white-knuckled on the cane.
