How It Works

Sometimes, memes can be awkward. There's always that feeling that, if you don't know the person behind the curtain, you'll be intruding somehow. Don't worry. We've all been there. Still, it's nice to have that little reassurance that hey, it's cool. We're all in this together and we just want to play. That's where this meme comes in! The point here is to play with someone you've never played with before, OR play with a character/canon you're unfamiliar with. The prompts provided include mundane activities, chance meetings, platonic fluff, romance/smut, fighting, and crack. This is pretty much the granddaddy of meme variety, so there should be something for just about everyone. INSTRUCTIONS - Comment with you character(s). In the subject field, put all the info that's relevant + any preferences. - Reply to others. Remember, the goal is to play with new people! - The initial set of prompts is in this post. He's not about to explain, either, but when they reach the car he pauses to lean against it, surveying the park they've just left. "Where will you be going from here...?" He's a little reluctant to see her go, but he's not sure if she is going, yet. On the other hand, he's extremely careful about who he brings into his home.

((No problem! Go sleep. I've got lots of work to do on it. And lots of swearing that I can't seem to work with animated gifs anymore.))

[She pulls out her sonic and looks at it.]

I... Don't know. I suppose I should track down the Brig, UNIT or one of the Doctor's other assistants.

Again with that little device. If he thought she had more leisure time, he'd ask to look it over thoroughly. "And you do... have transportation? I don't mean to leave you stranded or any such thing..."

((Yeeeah. The software I used to use won't install on this comp. Free software I downloaded doesn't seem to work. Can't afford to buy anything. :P ))

Even if I did, I doubt it would get me to England, which is where I need to be.

"Ah. Well, there's always magical means of travel, or I could... take you to the Nexus. They have devices available there..." He doesn't like to use his much, but it does come in handy.

The "Nexus"?

"A crossing place of dimensions. I stumbled upon it quite by accident, but it sounds your sort of place. You never know, you might find your friend there." He's still visited there less than a year, but it's been surprisingly beneficial.

I know what a nexus is. But you're saying "The Nexus" and calling it a place, as if anyone has access to it.

[Which is simply not how it works, in Romana's experience.]

"I suppose it's simply A Nexus, one of an infinite number, but it's the only one I've ever been to. And I did say I stumbled on it. It is a place..."

Even Romana still has things to learn. The multiverse is vast.

And where is this place?

[Of course she does, but don't tell her that.]

Instead of answering directly, he rummages in a pocket and pulls out what looks a little like a large digital watch, and peers at it. "Well there are coordinates, but I suppose it would be just as easy to show you. We'd better at least go around the corner first, though. My shield isn't so good people won't notice if we just vanish off the street."

[She raises an eyebrow and follows.]

Perhaps that could get me home...

"In theory, it might. I'm afraid I'm no expert, just a casual visitor." He pushes off the Bentley, since he was leaning against it, and offers her his arm again while he looks around for a surreptitious spot they can slip away from, unseen.

A nearby alley between shops should do, although he feels a little awkward leading a lady there. But it's New York. Nobody will be too bothered about it. He strolls there casually until they're tucked out of sight from the street, then presses the button to take him to the Nexus.

[She takes his arm and follows him. Excuse her gasp when they vanish and reappear.]

Its... a nexus. This is... How did you come across it?

"There was a sort of gate. I've sealed it up, now, because I didn't want anybody else stumbling through from here... so I use this instead." He holds up the watchlike device briefly, then tucks it away in his pocket. "There's a kind of vending machine you can get them at." He gestures loosely to the wide open space, lit from everywhere and nowhere, ceilingless and without walls and full of couches and strange beings. And a giant red stiletto shoe. There's a bar off in the distance, and the vending machines and something else next to them that says 'PIN-me'. The people are that weird assortment you could only get at a dimensional crossroads.

Humans from your time period should not have access to such places.

"On the average, I'd have to agree. But I'm not about to give it up, either." He's firm on that point. Thanks to this place, he has his one and only best friend back, which he never thought possible.

When I allowed for non-Gallifreyans to attend the Academy, this is what they feared. Am I to go back and tell them they had reasons to fear?

[bitterguardian]

"Why do they fear it?" He's frowning now, too. "It's not as if whole worlds are coming here. As near as I can tell, it's rarely more than one person from any one dimension."

Because it is dangerous for the timelines for them to even be meeting each other.

[She shouldn't have met Horvath, but nothing she can do about that now.]

If they are not trained, or don't know how to handle themselves in such a circumstance, it can be extremely dangerous.

[She sighs.]

Which was my argument for opening the academy. I'd rather have individuals who might know a little something, rather than blundering around, and making a mistake that could implode the known universe.

"Ordinarily, I'd agree. Magic is much the same way. The untrained can be... disastrous, and tend to lead short and very eventful lives if no one finds them to take on as a student..." He limps to a small grouping of chairs, prods one lightly with his cane, then offers her a seat.

"But this place operates on rules entirely its own, and does provide a number of educational practices. It also... seems to have a resilience, or perhaps some safeguards. I'm not entirely certain the place isn't sentient, but I haven't studied it overmuch."

[She takes a seat and smiles.]

Most universes do operate on their own rules. And all universes appear to be sentient. Though, most of the time it can be explained through scientific means.

"I'm afraid I'm really only familiar with my own universe and this place. I do realize it's... ill-advised, to muck about with such things." He takes a seat facing her, stretching out his left leg comfortably.

"It's one of those things we always advise students against. Sorcery can be used to manipulate time, but the repercussions are too vast and unforeseeable. But... this place, it seems different somehow. Or perhaps I've been lulled into a false sense of security." He's still not about to give it up.

Complacency is the biggest danger of all.

[She sighs.]

Sorry, that is always one of my biggest worries.

"Mm." Horvath frowns a little, feeling very much the picture of complacency itself now that he's settled in a chair with his leg stretched out and a hand across his stomach. He's tired, though, and that's not from being complacent, either.

"Perhaps, but look around you. If you want to warn your people about this place, be my guest, but it's done me and everyone I've spoken to here far more good than harm, and I suspect any efforts to squash it will meet with resistance." He glances away. "From myself, as well, I'm afraid." He's not trying to sound aggressive about it, but he's not giving up the connection this place has given him to another Balthazar.
