The Witch's Curse


A fantasy AU meme where witches are real, and they are vengeful. Specify your character's role: the witch (or sorcerer), the subject of the curse, or the curse breaker. Tag around and pick or RNG a curse.

1: Change of Form: human turned animal, mythical beast turned human, human turned inanimate object, human made older/younger, the possibilities are endless

2: Obeisance: you are now cursed to follow the witch's every command and it's useless to resist, or perhaps you simply have to obey every command given you no matter who gives it

3: Curse of Sleep: like princesses before you, you are cursed to sleep for all eternity, or at least until your one true love finds you

4: Possession: be it a demon or any other kind of spirit, your body is no longer your own

5: Isolation: some witches use towers, others use forests of thorns, but either way the message is clear-- you are never seeing the outside world again

6: Resurrection: even death is not an escape from the witch's power, for some can raise the dead

7: Bad Luck: some curses are more minor, only causing you to stub your toe or drop your books, but they're still annoying

8: Defects: you weren't turned to an inhuman shape, but were somehow made hideous, clumsy, or repellent in some way-- maybe you smell terrible, or maybe people who get near you just feel uneasy and want to leave

9: Wounds: you have a wound that simply won't heal-- maybe it's slowly killing you, maybe it's just annoying, but it's not going away

10: Monster Magnet: wherever you go you're always being attacked by creatures, demons or monsters or ghosts, etc, that want to kill you

11: Never to Meet: you become an animal during the day while your true love is human, then you switch forms at night, so you can never both be human at the same time again

12: Death: your death is approaching and you need to find a way to avert it or remove the curse entirely

13: Objectification: you didn't avoid the death curse, and now your soul is bound to an inanimate object, perhaps to provide more power for the witch, to bind a spell to the object and give it power, or maybe just so you can't move on to your next life

14: Cursed Object: maybe it wasn't the witch themselves, but something that used to belong to a witch that put the curse on you, and now you must find a witch who can remove the curse

15: Cursed Ground: your house is built somewhere it really should not have been, and now you have to deal with ghosts or demons or the undead, which will really ruin your property value

16: Wildcard: choose your own adventure!

I haven't done anything to scare her, Rogers. I've just laid it out there. We need to leave. I'm not going anywhere without you.

So then... You're gonna stay with us too?

[Because nobody's leaving. Nobody.]

I'm willing to let you come with us, if you want.

[She spreads her hands, making a show of being so utterly reasonable.]

No one needs to stay here. You shouldn't.

[She slowly detaches herself from Steve, looking up at Natasha warily. She barely comes up waisthigh.]

We were gonna have a tea party today. That comes first.

[Natasha frowns. For just a second, this suggestion seems like a reasonable compromise. Humor the child for a tea party, then leave. She shakes her head stubbornly though.]

We've been here long enough. If you still want to have a tea party when we're out, then we'll have one, promise. But first we have to leave.

[But then the maliciousness melts from her face. She lets out a persistent whine that grows in intensity, eyes welling and spilling over in a mighty sob.]

[She throws a glance at Steve, but her resolve stays firm in the face of tears.]

Crying won't get you anything.

[elcapitan]

[Crying gets her everything from Steve. He's back on her, consoling her. He lifts her into his arms and stands up to glare at her as the girl settles down and happily hugs his neck.]

We can play pretend with a child for a couple of hours. It won't set us behind.

If we weren't already almost two months behind, I might agree with you. Right now, we can't risk it.

[elcapitan]

It's not a risk. And I'm not going to haul a crying child with us when it's easier to just make her feel safe.

[He steps deeper into the house without another word, considering the matter closed.]

[outstandingbalance]

[Natasha does not consider it closed. She follows them into the cottage, still firmly resolved.]

This place isn't safe. [That's not entirely impossible. The girl could be as much a prisoner here as them; Natasha doubts it though.] The longer we stay here, the more likely it is that the trap closes with us still in it.

You're not dressed for tea!

[The girl pipes up suddenly, pointing an accusatory finger in Natasha's direction.]

Because we're not having tea.

[Natasha grits her teeth.]

None of us are.

[projecthydra]

Yes. We. Are.

[The tone is nearly a shriek, a shade short of a tantrum. If her feet could reach the floor, she'd be stomping. But as she balls up her fists and scrunches her face, a flash envelops the space. When Natasha blinks next, her gear and weapons will all be scattered on the floor, while she's been dressed in a simple mint dress with a floral print.]

Steve...?

[Natasha looks at Steve, questioning and looking for support. Surely he can see how dangerous this is.]

[elcapitan]

Natasha, you shouldn't bring so many guns into a child's home. What could've happen if she'd gotten her hands on them?

[That's the primary danger he spots here.]

[outstandingbalance]

That's what you notice? Steve, my clothes...?

[The fact that she just disarmed the Black Widow with nothing more than a tantrum.]

It's fine. They can go up out of reach where she can't get to them.

[He sets the girl down and moves to collect the scattered weapons.]

[And she'll watch him for a moment before raising her eyes back to Natasha.]

I'm gonna get hurt around all this sharp stuff. You should come play tea party with me and make sure I'm safe.

[She raises up one hand for Natasha to hold.]

[Natasha finds herself taking the child's hand despite all her misgivings.]

It wouldn't have been dangerous if you'd left them where they were.

It was an accident.

[She pouts innocently as they move through a hall longer than the cottage looked wide from the outside.]

I'm just a little girl.

[outstandingbalance]

[There is absolutely no way that was an accident.]

That's not all you are. [Natasha frown, not taken in.] I was a little girl once to.

[projecthydra]

[She glances over her shoulder back at Steve, measuring the distance between them before hissing in a lower tone.]

Then you should know better than to mess with me. The garden was supposed to stop you.

[outstandingbalance]

That was abundantly clear.

[That's why Natasha had to reach Steve. At least the girl is showing her real face now, though. She doesn't have to entertain the possibility the witch is somehow innocent in this.]

We're not staying here.

[projecthydra]

Funny that you'd say that.

[She pauses in a bright pink room with a round table circled by stuffed animals. There are at least fifteen doorways spiraling around them suddenly.]

Because you're never leaving.
