The Witch's Curse


A fantasy AU meme where witches are real, and they are vengeful. Specify your character's role: the witch (or sorcerer), the subject of the curse, or the curse breaker. Tag around and pick or RNG a curse.

1: Change of Form: human turned animal, mythical beast turned human, human turned inanimate object, human made older/younger, the possibilities are endless

2: Obeisance: you are now cursed to follow the witch's every command and it's useless to resist, or perhaps you simply have to obey every command given you no matter who gives it

3: Curse of Sleep: like princesses before you, you are cursed to sleep for all eternity, or at least until your one true love finds you

4: Possession: be it a demon or any other kind of spirit, your body is no longer your own

5: Isolation: some witches use towers, others use forests of thorns, but either way the message is clear-- you are never seeing the outside world again

6: Resurrection: even death is not an escape from the witch's power, for some can raise the dead

7: Bad Luck: some curses are more minor, only causing you to stub your toe or drop your books, but they're still annoying

8: Defects: you weren't turned to an inhuman shape, but were somehow made hideous, clumsy, or repellent in some way-- maybe you smell terrible, or maybe people who get near you just feel uneasy and want to leave

9: Wounds: you have a wound that simply won't heal-- maybe it's slowly killing you, maybe it's just annoying, but it's not going away

10: Monster Magnet: wherever you go you're always being attacked by creatures, demons or monsters or ghosts, etc, that want to kill you

11: Never to Meet: you become an animal during the day while your true love is human, then you switch forms at night, so you can never both be human at the same time again

12: Death: your death is approaching and you need to find a way to avert it or remove the curse entirely

13: Objectification: you didn't avoid the death curse, and now your soul is bound to an inanimate object, perhaps to provide more power for the witch, to bind a spell to the object and give it power, or maybe just so you can't move on to your next life

14: Cursed Object: maybe it wasn't the witch themselves, but something that used to belong to a witch that put the curse on you, and now you must find a witch who can remove the curse

15: Cursed Ground: your house is built somewhere it really should not have been, and now you have to deal with ghosts or demons or the undead, which will really ruin your property value

16: Wildcard: choose your own adventure!

[She rises from her seat and steps to Natasha's side, close enough to whisper conspiratorially in her ear.]

Today is April twenty-third and I'm going to stay with this child. She needs a family. I'm going to give her the family I never had. We're happy here.

[Natasha closes her eyes as the girl whispers into her ear, her breathing slowing.]

A family...

[elcapitan]

[The whispering continues for long after that, but it's harder to tell where her natural thoughts and and where the others begin. It just all seems so peaceful, a perfect house that's too perfect to ever leave, and a perfect day that'll never change no matter how many times the sun rises and sets.

Steve'll be with her next, shaking her shoulder gently.]

The tea party was that fun, was it? Did you get enough sleep last night?

I guess I dozed off.

[Natasha blinks. They were having a tea party, and then... a blank. he shakes her head.]

Not really. Hard to get a good night's sleep in a forest that's trying to kill you.

[elcapitan]

[He leans down to kiss her forehead merrily, and then unseats a stuffed animal to make room for himself at the table.] If you want to head to bed early, I can take it from here.

I might have to. [She closes her eyes, tilting her face toward the kiss. Where did this come from? It takes her by surprise, but at the same time, she can't quite define why it should.]

Hopefully my head is clearer in the morning.

[elcapitan]

I hope so too. It's a big day tomorrow. Get all the rest you can.

[He squeezes her shoulder lightly before turning his attention to the little girl, infinitely innocent.]

It is that. Make sure she gets plenty of sleep too. No one wants to be cranky on their birthday.

[Natasha stands, turning toward the doors—then hesitates, not sure which leads to her room.]

I love you!

[The little soprano squeaks from behind Natasha, but there won't be anything to stop her from wandering the enormous home as she'd like. There's enough to explore that Natasha will easily keep herself occupied for ages, hemorrhaging time that never seems to pass. No matter how long she explores or sleeps or eats, tomorrow will never come.]

Love you too.

[Natasha shakes her head again; she really must be exhausted to forget to say that. She wanders off to lay down for a while. Steve can take on parent duty for a couple hours. Just while Natasha takes a nap to clear her head.]

[Wherever she finally settles down to sleep, she'll wake in a large bed with weight next to her. The girl is behind her, pressing her small hands into Natasha's back and shaking her awake.]

Mommy? Mommy, I want to nap in your bed with you. Can I please?

[outstandingbalance]

[Natasha yawns, no less tired than when she lay down. She glances over her shoulder, taking in the sight of the girl. Mommy? A part of her pushes back against that, telling her it's impossible, but she doesn't entirely understand way.]

Of course, sweetie, of course. [She swallows, tamping down her confusion.] Where's Steve? Isn't he watching you?

Daddy needed a time out. He started thinking bad thoughts.

[She'll burrow under the sheet as if there was nothing wrong with that, clinging to Natasha's waist.]

[Natasha puts an arm around the girl automatically, letting her snuggle in without protest. But she's not without questions.]

What do you mean, bad thoughts?

[That's not like him.]

He wanted me to clean up my toys. And then he started talking about going away.

[She buries her face in the softness of Natasha's side.]

Daddy needed to get punished.

[outstandingbalance]

[Natasha rubs the girl's back again, her brows drawing together. A child shouldn't be punishing adults, should she?]

We're not leaving until after your birthday. He knows that. Where is he? I'll talk to him about it.

[projecthydra]

You'll just take his side.

[She pouts, but settles under the comforting cuddles.]

[outstandingbalance]

Parents do that sometimes.

[How are they parents. It's impossible. There's so many reasons that's impossible.]

I won't take his side until I've heard it, though. I might not.

[projecthydra]

[She sighs, puffing out her cheeks.]

Okay, but don't think wrong, or else you'll have to go in time out with him.

[outstandingbalance]

[She gives the girl another hug, reassuring.]

Mostly I'm just checking to see what mess he's got himself in this time.

[That's her job, after all.]

Where is he?

[projecthydra]

[She curls her fingers around the blanket.]

In the time out room.

[And as she says it, Natasha will know the location like a beacon, exactly which path to take among the maze of rooms and paths in this impossible little house.

But of course Natasha knows her way around. She lives here too, doesn't she?]

[Of course she knows.]

I should have know that. Sorry, sweetie. Still tired...

[She gets up and heads for the time out room. Steve should know better than to get in trouble like this.]

[elcapitan]

[She'll find Steve in a dark, ominous room. The only light is provided by dozens of candles melted down to the halfway point or lower. He's standing in the center of a tight circle, blankly watching a pair of lights dance around his head. He's mumbling something that never finds voice, the magical equivalent of being forced to stand in a corner.]

Steve....?

[Getting away from the girl helps, but only a little. Natasha can find some shock and horror in herself for this, even if it's muted.]

Jeez, what did you do?

[elcapitan]

[When she asks, he'll raise his voice just enough to be heard.]

I thought I remembered something from before we were a family but it was wrong I was wrong it was a mistake. Our daughter is perfect. We're lucky to be a family.
