[Eh, don't worry about it! FFXIV has all sorts of crazy that would be really difficult to explain IC sometimes - even when there IS an IC explanation! Also yesterday was... insanity. Something was wrong with the heater, so I had to call a guy out... turned out two of our radiators were freaking out and the boiler was dry. @_@ The piece that tells the water regulator to give the boiler more water is dead. So they got it working but now they have to come repair this damn piece. Blarg.]

Species seemed the less odd thing in the face of simply being. It was not easy for Charles to admit to himself what he had felt for Erik, in particular given the climate of this world as it currently stood in this day and age, and he would not have to anyone else. Not Aurus, not Hank, not Erik himself. That had been... too personal. Yet in this case, even gender seemed a far removed step in the face of species, and those both paled in the shadow of Charles' issues. Yet step by step, Aurus was slowly working his way into those places Charles had closed off to prevent further hurt, coaxing the professor out of that shadow even as Charles pulled himself back in.

"We have airplanes - not quite like your airships, but similar in certain principles - but no one would wish to live in them as a culture. Sadly, we have those machines of war as well. I'm glad to hear some form of peace is starting to occur with these charr, even if it is a very slow to spread peace. If someone other than the charr learn to produce these vehicles, I imagine that they would begin to make vehicles that look so very different as well. For ours, the glass is required to allow the driver to be able to safely see all around him, but if you see military vehicles, they're quite different. Much less glass, if any." Images from shots of war on the telly came to mind, things he had never seen in person but knew in that general sense.

"And what about you, Aurus? You've seen so much, traveled through these Mists... what is the greatest thing you've seen so far?" A vague little gesture. "In anything. Technology, culture, magic... what would you call the greatest?" He couldn't help but be curious, wanting to hear more about Aurus' travels. Who wouldn't want to hear about the things the traveler of another world had seen?

[Oh no! That sounds terrible! I hope it's not going to be too expensive to fix at least. And you're not without heat/hot water while waiting for the repairs? That's the absolute worst.]

It was almost certainly a good thing that Aurus did not know Erik and likely never would. Given how sexually liberal he was, he might well have read the tension and wounded intimacy between the two men straight away. He'd have had no reason to presume their relationship was nonsexual, after all. Besides, while he was in many ways fairly atypical of his race, he did have some notorious sylvari tendencies--a potentially discomforting directness when it came to emotional matters, for example. He had a good deal more tact than most sylvari, so he at least could be counted on to bide his time and speak at a well-chosen moment, but ten-to-one odds, he would have said something to Charles about it all.

No, it was clearly better for all concerned that Erik was currently very far removed from the picture, fascinated though Aurus would have been to know about the history of Charles' past loves in general.

With a small self-deprecating laugh at Charles' questions, the sylvari gave a little shake of his head. "Oh, I am a bad person to ask. I tend to have a rather unconventional assessment of these sorts of things, or so I am given to understand." But he considered for a moment, and then he did answer:

"I think the greatest things--the most awe inspiring--may also be the most terrible. Years ago, I saw Glint's body in the Crystal Desert, shortly after she died. It was the day that Kralkatorrik awoke. I saw its flight in the distance, its gold breath blackening the land, and the Branded emerging in its wake. I realized later that I must have seen its path as it flew away from her body where it killed her. It was twenty times her size, but even still, the experience of seeing it--that couldn't compare to seeing her there on the sand."

Aurus looked into Charles' eyes meaningfully as he told this story, trying to convey the full impact of it, which was difficult to capture merely in words. "I know that later the Zephyrites came to tend to her remains, but when I saw her they'd yet to arrive. I walked up to her body, and I placed my hand on her skin." He splayed his fingers here, as though he was remembering the feeling of it, what it had been like to touch.

"Even in death there was a power that thrummed through her, something...uncanny that I wanted to understand. That is what led me to come to the Mists--a wish to try and find some trace of her, to learn what she might teach me.

"As it turned out, that was the day that I met Hakkyuu too," this also made him shake his head a bit. "He was half mad, and had I found him any later he would have been half dead as well. I suppose you could say it was a busy day in the Crystal Desert, especially for ancient forces no longer content to be mere relics of the past.

"At any rate, I'd say the sights of that day were among the greatest I've seen...provided we're excluding the rather marvelous range of tasting sounds and hearing colors I've experienced with all the hallucinogens I've tried over the years. Some of those has been particularly extraordinary." He might have been joking about this final comparison, especially given the coy smile he gave Charles as he said it.

[Hoping it won't be too bad. The part itself is like $200-ish. Thankfully, the hot water heater is a separate system! So I do have hot water. We're just having to watch the heater really carefully. It's working, but there's a regulator that like... asks the water system for more water to make sure the boiler has enough water at all times, and that's what's broken. The system's filled right now, but we have to watch to make sure it doesn't go below the minimum which could break things. Basically: not letting the heat turn on until things are fixed.]

Charles had a very keen feeling that Aurus would not have taken well to Erik, or perhaps that was the other way around. Possibly even more stubborn, colder, harder Erik who only had warmth if you knew where to look.

Aurus' description left Charles closing his eyes briefly as he tried to imagine the words into the visual in his mind. The endless spread of a desert, the magnificence of a dragon, the sheer scale of her, and the heartbreak that came with finding something majestic broken. A smashed crystal vase, the ruins of a once beautiful home, and here... scales that had rippled gone still, the sun beating down making them reflect but without the brightness of life.

He felt the weight of Aurus' gaze on him, making his eyes open again and finding them piercing, almost willing him to understand, but it continued in his mindscape. Scales warmed by the sun but not within. His mind imagined the feeling of magic as that faint vibration that remained after turning off a telly and running his hand over the screen, but more powerful. Death... it was often a life changer, and at an impressionable time in Aurus' life, he wasn't surprised to think finding such a thing changed Aurus' life forever. Finding the boy who would become his student as well, two back to back influences? A day truly to be remembered.

"I prefer not to remember those sorts of experiences from University," Charles said so dryly it was hard to tell that he was joking except for the faint crease of lines around his eyes that spoke of amusement. "But..." His expression softened, a touch of awe coming instead. "I couldn't imagine having found her. ...I can picture it, but the immensity of it..." He let his voice trail on purpose, his mind going to the memory of putting on Cerebro for the first time. That terrible feeling of power that was intoxicating as it was horrifying. Maybe he could imagine it, to some degree.

[I hope that it's not too terribly cold there yet (though end of October, I know it probably is, especially if you're up in the mountains at all)...or at least that you have some space heaters to tide you over for a few days. It's good that you still have the hot water but being without heat is totally rotten.]

"Here," Aurus said, realizing that Charles was trying to imagine what he described and that imagination alone could never really do it justice.

Reaching for the man's hand, he drew it forward towards himself, encouraging Charles to rest his fingers--his whole palm if he was willing--on Aurus's chest, fingertips just by the base of his throat. He could, of course, have brought Charles' hand to his temple, encouraging him to read his thoughts that way, but it simply didn't occur to him. This memory was something he felt deep in his pith more than in his mind.

He focused on it, his own hand still resting lightly on Charles', and let it fill him the way it had that day: this suffusing sense of energy, like every molecule within him was on the cusp of some tremendous motion.

It wasn't the sort of power on which madmen sought to glut themselves--it was too amorphous. The feeling was more like light refracting, reflecting, focusing; like becoming refracted light, so that the whole of one's body was ready to shoot towards some tremendous velocity, dart impossibly across the landscape and glimpse the world from impossible angles, unreal vantage points. In its way, it was intensely disorienting--or perhaps it was reorienting. (For Aurus, at least, the former tended to present the latter, which was one of the reasons that he'd never met a psychotropic substance that he'd said no to.)

Even in death, Glint had seemed to embody the force of some total and incomprehensible motion, and that was what Aurus had felt that day, what he hoped Charles would be able to read from his memories of the experience, provided, of course, that he was willing to do so.

[Oh no no no, we have heat, we just have to be careful to watch it and leave it off otherwise. It's chilly here but that's what electric blankets are for. XD I'm not in the mountains - just outside of Philadelphia to the west. My family however says they've had frost up in the mountains already!]

The sudden pull of his hand was a bit of an surprise that showed on his face, as people generally did not invite him to enter their minds in such a physical manner, or ever, really. However, after a moment, he let his eyes drift shut again and he concentrated. He had learned early on that different touches provided different information with a touch to the temple being the greatest connection he could manage - himself or another.

But he felt outward, breathing slowing until they breathed as one. When he caught the edges of that forward most thought in Aurus' mind, he almost didn't understand it at first but quickly realize he had to not analyze it but simply feel it. Another breath and he cleared his mind, delving into the sensation. Physical things - pain, touch, scents - could never be fully replicated in the mind. They could be thought of, things around them remembered, but never the full feeling of that memory. So he 'listened' to the thoughts around Aurus' memory as much as the memory itself, letting out a breath at the incredible nature of it.

His imagination hadn't been exactly wrong, but it was far removed from the strength of that feeling and the precise angle it took. "Unbelievable," he whispered into the air between them.

[Ahh I am glad to hear all of this (except for the bit about frost; I don't even want to think about frost starting to be a thing anywhere). It's still quite mild here for the moment, but we changed the clocks today and I already mourn the loss of daylight. orz ]

It would have pleased Aurus tremendously to know that he was doing something that was so rarely offered, but even without knowing for sure, he already suspected--there was the expression of surprise that crossed Charles' features, but more than that there was something about the man's general reservedness that seemed to suggest it.

Regardless, it mattered to Aurus very much that he could extend the offer of intimacy in this way, and that intimacy could exist between them on a level beyond the sexual. This was what he hadn't quite managed to convey to Charles in words: all his flirtation had never just been about sex, though of course it included that. He wanted the moment of touch between the two of them to be something that conveyed more than merely the contact of their skin, and he was not at all disappointed.

It wasn't precisely that he could feel Charles in his mind--that would have been an overstatement. The door, at this point, swung only one way and Aurus could not read Charles the way that Charles read him. (He had ideas on how he might change that: magic akin to what he used to forge his bond with the Legends, chemicals that could alter his mental state.) He did, however, feel the sense of synchronicity. It was not merely their breath that harmonized. That was a first step; it could go so much deeper.

With his own eyes closed and focusing only on the feelings--first of Glint's body and then, on a level beneath that, of his body and Charles' in reciprocity with each other--Aurus encouraged them to continue, to dive deeper, swept along in the dizzying blur of light and motion into a domain of living crystal, a hall filled with light that seemed to bend at impossible angles where sound echoed like a chiming of glass off the ice-like surfaces.

This was Glint's lair, and though Aurus had never been here in any straightforward physical sense, he had "been" here through Glint, and through her he hoped that he might manage to bring Charles here too. It was an experiment--an attempt to see what might be possible purely from the connection as it existed at this level--but one that he hoped Charles wouldn't shy away from.

[IT HAPPENED. I came out to frost on my windshield this morning! *sob* We'll change our time this upcoming weekend and honestly I'll be happy to wake to sun instead of total darkness, even if I will miss my longer days. Also sorry on the slow! Anniversary dinner was last night + handing out candy.... won my job's Halloween costume contest, though! Rawr I love being a werewolf. XD]

Charles could understand easily why it happened so rarely. The mind, for any mind of sentience, was that sacred place where no one could intrude, where thoughts of any ilk could be voiced within and without judgment, where the memories and the very person stood. To have someone enter that space violated something deeply fundamental in most people and thus his power was not welcomed. That was how his morals had been created, learning through experience and circumstance. Unintentionally outing Hank had taught him a powerful lesson. Accidentally hinting something was different about children when he was trying to find his first students. The loss of his students. Making some people very angry or feeling threatened by him.

(He would not take so well to the idea of Aurus coming into his mind, ironically enough.)

Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that Aurus was so welcoming. After all, he shared his mental space with others already so it might be second nature to open it willingly to those he trusted. He kept his breathing slow and steady, feeling his heart rate slowing as he sunk out of his own body. It wasn't a near-complete disconnect like it was when he used Cerebro or when he went truly deep into another's mind. His brows knitted unconsciously as he felt things begin to change, the feeling not of movement about to happen, like building pressure, but movement within. The change of memories. He would have pulled back physically if Aurus wasn't still holding his wrist, so it took a moment or two to realize that Aurus was trying to show him something else. Something that was more than the feeling at the surface.

He let himself go further on that assumption of consent, but only just enough to see what had been opened to him. It was strange, because at first, he didn't understand what he was seeing. A sudden light in the darkness of seconds before. A brilliant light, faintly blue, the sound like glass... an ice cave? He asked, without even opening his mouth, what is this? His sense of curiosity and wonder came through, wanting to know.

[Here too, actually. First frost on the car, but I am home sick. Had to cancel my class and feel terribly guilty about it, but I have no voice and can barely croak like a frog. I was going to ask how your Halloween was. The UK barely celebrates it at all. We can only console ourselves with GW2 Halloween-themed events. Also, happy anniversary!]

It wasn't just because of the Legends that Aurus was so willing to invite Charles into his mind. Perhaps ironically, it was because of all the years he'd spent alone.

When one becomes a hermit, they must necessarily come to terms first and foremost with themselves, since they are the one person they cannot leave behind, whose company they will always keep. Aurus had meditated and reflected and examined every corner of himself in those years. He had come to know himself from the inside out, and there was nothing inside of him that he'd not already sorted through, addressed, and put into some sort of order. He trusted Charles inside his mind because he trusted that he knew what was in there. It was like inviting someone into a well-kept house.

Put another way, Aurus was just so fundamentally shameless that he had no fear of what Charles might see inside him. He knew that there were plenty of things there that some people would find shameful, but he simply accepted them.

Glint's lair, Aurus answered, replying to the question with equal silence. He smiled, and the impression of his happiness might well have been conveyed as well--happiness at the success of the little experiment, the fact that he and Charles could, for the moment, speak without giving voice to their words; the fact that they could manage to come to this spot together.

I've never been here. And yet I've been here often. This is where she sent me when I studied with her--always like this, meditating on it until its contours became sensate. Her power still dwells in this place, even long after her body has left. That's part of what I learned in these chambers. It is not all safe, but we are safe here.

[Oh noes! You get better, no more sickies! Banish it with tea with honey and a lemon menthol cough drop! Halloween was fun! We went to a fondue place for our dinner then came home and changed into costumes. ^_^ Lots of kids this year! Had to turn away some older ones for not wearing a costume though, wtf kids? At least try.]

There was no small measure of irony in the fact that Charles, for all that he had seen the minds of many, could not have been farther from that place of certainty that Aurus had found. His mind held shields and walls, not all of his own creature. It held deep pits that welled with pain and darkness. There were places of light and joy, and most of all, the memories of something that very few would ever experience in any world or universe... the feeling of being connected to so many minds at once, the expanse of the world spread out like a web, the power it held. Something he dared not share for fear of overwhelming another much as it did him to begin with.

I will remember this for all of my days, Charles said honestly, looking around at Aurus' memory of such an incredible place. It felt like being in the depths of some strange cave, some place undiscovered by humanity but could possibly exist. He wished he could have brushed his fingers across the crystals - were they as solid as they seemed? Cold? Warm? They looked like ice, spears of bismuth thrust up at different angles and producing a rainbow of colors.

Such power... to remain even after death. He was not a religious man, but all men ponder on the existence of their own after the mortal shell ceases to be. Was this what it meant? That enough power would let you remain? He felt his own shell breath in slow and deep, the curious part of him wanting to know more, to feel more, but restraining himself with a bit of effort. I can see why you respect her so deeply. Who would not? Not only as a creature and mind of such incredible power, but to join him after her death to accomplish so much more, to continue to teach and pass on her knowledge... it was something Charles could not only understand, but admire.

[My kingdom for some American cough syrup rn, let me tell you. The British crap is useless. But I do have hot water and lemon, and green tea with honey, and just plain black tea with milk and sugar to comfort myself. All the tea. /bathes in it. Fondue and trick or treaters sounds like a fabulous evening. Can I tell you that in the 8 years I have lived in this country we've had a ground total of ONE trick or treater come to the door, and that's in all the places we've ever lived. How sad is that!]

Aurus couldn't precisely read what Charles was wishing for, but he could sense the lingering reservations within him, or maybe he was just getting to know the man well enough now to anticipate it. Regardless, he believed that there was something more beyond the words that Charles spoke in his mind--a desire, a part of him that wanted something beyond what his well-governed self restraint and polite formality would strictly allow. The admiration and respect for Glint were all clear, but they didn't need to only to be lived from afar.

What Charles needed, to Aurus's mind, was a little less restraint. He wanted to cultivate that, to encourage it. He didn't want Charles to be reckless or unsafe, but he did very much want him to loosen the tightest laces he kept on himself, to experience so many of the "riskier" feelings he'd barred himself access to.

He could feel the pulse in his throat beating against the pads of Charles' fingers, and he focused on that, on trying to bring them into synchronicity at a level even deeper than breath, delving farther into their connection, his hand still on the man's wrist in a steady gentle squeeze.

Show me what you want, Charles--what you want to do. I'm sure that there is something. I can feel it's there. You don't need to hold yourself back. Not here.

Go ahead. It's all right, I trust you. Trust me in return.

[*googles if you can send cough syrup* .... *calls USPS if you can send cough syrup* .... so when they call me back (wtf 30 minute wait) we'll see. I wouldn't mind sending you a bottle or two!]

What had been steady breathing staggered, a hard hitch that tugged in the low in pit of his throat. He felt it hike through his whole body, but his mind, which had been syncing in deeper, pulled back when he didn't physically. It wasn't so simple, not as Aurus saw it. His fingers flexed in his lap, and he tried to figure out how to explain. Which meant figuring out why he didn't immediately accept.

It's so much more, he whispered, the pads of his fingers pressing against Aurus' skin firmly. More than this... it will bring us together on a deeper level. He would feel all that Aurus did, almost one body, but it wouldn't return the favor. Charles had never let another into his own mind until he had touched his own in the strangest moment of existence there ever could have been. He knew it wasn't the first that his elder self had experienced but the details were withheld, not wanting to taint the possible future any further.

It was more than all of that, really. It was much more intimate, something he had held back from since the last lover he'd taken all those years ago.

[Ahhh that is so super sweet of you! <3 Not to worry, I've got my folks to hit up for care packages when the going gets really rough. I usually snag a bottle of cough syrup when I'm in the states but last time I brought back an industrial size bottle of advil instead. Oops.]

Then let it.

Aurus's answer was simple, but he knew very well that it would feel anything but simple for Charles to do.

He didn't mean to trivialize or make light of that difficulty, but in the end, Charles would have to decide that he was willing. Aurus could only suggest and encourage. The decision was of course not his to make.

Letting his fingers move softly over Charles' wrist for a moment, Aurus did extend a kind of encouragement through his touch--steady, reassuring; the sort of touch that promised a safe landing to a man toeing a cliff edge.

Whatever happened, he didn't expect that this would be the totally mutual experience he eventually hoped that they might share. For now it was still too soon. That sort of synchronicity didn't happen all at once. Aurus realized that, just as he realized that he couldn't really anticipate what this would feel like if Charles did do it. He was willing to find out though; willing for whatever it might bring.

[Hey I live on ibuprofen so I don't knock you. XD Sorry for the lack of response! I realized too late I didn't let you know I was going on vacation this weekend. Just came back from Nekocon... feel like I have a hangover @_@ So sleepy!]

It was like hanging on the edge of a canyon, one that went down into darkness that while familiar, a part of him, contained the unknown. He had fallen from the edge before, without any measure of safety, and in the end, had found himself dashed on the rocks. He thought of another, one that was well-known and yet not, and shied away from the thought almost immediately like a spooked horse. This wasn't him. This was someone else entirely. Someone who intrigued him on a level he couldn't quite explain, who didn't feel like a child or a student, who was inviting him with a true idea, at least to some degree, of just what it meant to say such a thing.

So there it hung, with the unknown terrifying and calling and utterly arousing his curiosity. He found himself just about to step forward when something on the telly banged - a commerical, a news piece, he had no idea - and made him realize just where they were. He wasn't a fool and knew just where it could lead, even if it was merely a heart-pounding release of the telepathic connection for them both, that would be less than pleasant or welcomed for one of his students to see.

He stepped back, so to speak.

Tonight. This is not the time or place. But there was reluctance in his voice to need to say so, something very hard to miss.

[Welcome back! I hope you had a blast at the con! (I was wondering a bit if all was well with you--glad to know it was a happy life occurrence and not a bad one.) Hopefully you can get some time to catch up on sleep today/tomorrow? And hahaha my last tag I was thinking that something ought to bang or clatter or make a commotion to interrupt them at the final moment--I'm so glad you did that!]

Aurus drew a sharp breath when he felt Charles withdraw, also startled by the sound on the television but even more caught by the breaking of that moment, the feeling of teetering on a precipice, waiting, suspended in an instant that seemed to extend on and on.

He didn't blame Charles for his temporary retreat. Not at all. He understood the reasons for it, but even more than that he felt the energy, like an ionic charge, that it sent through the air between them. No, this was indeed not the right time or place, but Charles could hardly have done anything to arouse Aurus's interest more than to choose to pause their forward momentum in that instant and declare it so. Truly, Aurus thought, the energy between them could not have been more erotic if Charles had chosen to continue than it was now, with his choice to wait.

Letting his eyes open, Aurus exhaled slowly, sure that Charles could feel his pulse pounding and wondering if he could likewise feel the erotic frisson, wondering if it had caught him the same way. He ran his thumb over the back of the man's hand and slowly over his knuckles, and the corner of his mouth tugged in a smile, but it was the look in his eyes that could probably have made a man blush if he wasn't very well in control of himself.

He gave a subtle nod. "Tonight," he agreed.

And probably that was all a very good decision with very good timing, because only a moment later the sound of voices began to fill the hallway outside--the changeover interval between classes, Aurus presumed.

[Despite some severe stomach issues, I had a ton of fun! I go to LARP there exclusively which is a little crazy... this was the very con that got me into LARPing 10 years ago this con! It's a deep hole - now I am the head of my own LARP at a different con. Tomorrow [wed] I'll have my 'catch up' day which is something I am desperately waiting for. I feel quite a bit better today than yesterday and hoping things just keep improving. I hope everything is going well!]

His breathing was faster than it should have been, his heart racing... he had gone deeper than he had expected to but there was something far more than that. There was something electric between them, arcing and leaving a sizzle across the skin, or perhaps that was merely the feeling of Aurus' thumb across his hand. That simple touch left a tingle that remained even after it had passed, making him wonder almost if Aurus had done so naturally or not. He breathed out slowly, trying to calm it, even as the sounds of changing classes started to filter in to them.

Their gaze held, binding and asking and wanting, all by the control of a desire that came from more than just the physical. That feeling again of standing at the edge of the cliff, waiting for the terror and excitement of the fall, but it would have to remain there pulsing just under his heart for now. Tonight. An agreement to something Charles wasn't even fully sure he knew what he was getting into.

And there was a part of him that wanted nothing more, the part of him that remembered how he was before he had been so deeply hurt.

The door opened and Charles leaned back as several students paused in the doorway, staring in surprise and wonder at the new comer in the room before several came closer, clearly wanting to talk to him and find out what was going on with the new comer. Parent? New student? Visitor? But a look from Charles did manage to keep them at bay briefly, looking to Aurus and bringing up a smile. "Changing of class means Hank's freed up for your little experiment time. Shall we?"

[Ooh! What kind of LARPing do you do? It sounds like quite a to-do and a good adventure. (My partner and I do a lot of spoken/live RP, but we don't do the formalized game-style LARPing.) I hope you had a good day of rest and are holding up ok after the you-know-what results. This has just felt like a very long week and I am overwhelmingly glad that it's Friday.]

Aurus was sure the students saw nothing--or at least very little: hands dropping away from each other, perhaps, as he and Charles mutually sat back. Nothing directly suspect.

But that didn't stop him from feeling like the whole surface of his skin was alight with some telltale mark from the charge that had built between the two of them. There was a thrill to that, the enjoyment of a shared secret knowledge, like they had just agreed to a kind of intimate conspiracy.

Of course that sort of feeling came with the inevitable sense that everyone would be able to read it on them at once; as if the moment it was struck, it was already the worst kept secret any two people could have. This wasn't a guilty feeling for Aurus. But either way he was (luckily) much better at keeping these sorts of things private than most sylvari who had an overwhelming tendency to act like, since it felt as though everyone knew, everyone virtually did know and there was therefore no reason to bother keeping anything secret in the first place.

The biggest tell that Aurus showed was a particular look in his eyes as he nodded in assent at Charles' suggestion and moved to stand, letting Charles take the lead to Hank's lab.

Even if he managed to hide it, though, he was undeniably aware of how intense his desire for Charles had grown. Not in the crude, simple sense of lust. This was something far more complex, but something that nonetheless made him wish that he'd been able to go on touching Charles' skin, something that made his hands already miss him.

Of course it was impossible not to notice how the students watched them as they left the room. It wasn't as though these curious stares were new. Aurus had been getting them all morning, but now he couldn't help but wonder a little what the students knew, or imagined, or suspected. Barring some unforeseen mutant power, he rationally knew that they should have no way to read the energy building between himself and Charles, but Aurus had to wonder: might someone else read it? Might Hank? He didn't know nearly enough of this world's culture to guess what the reaction might be.

"I hope," he said to Charles in a low, half-playful voice once they had passed the initial group of staring students, "that your student body is not overly inclined towards gossip and speculation. I think once this volcano has been made I'd better start to meet some of them straight away lest any wild rumors take hold."

[Two different kinds actually. One is the one I run which is at anime cons, which doesn't involve costume and it's based on a sheet like D&D and we throw rock paper scissors to determine outcomes. The characters are anime and video game characters with some other media as well! Lots of fun! The other kind I am running a spinoff but don't run the main bulk of it. This is the more 'serious' LARP which is based on a Harry Potter-like magical world (interacts with the real world, etc) where we're going to the magical college called New World Magischola (sister to the College of Wizardry, which is another LARP in Poland!) and it's full costume, all in character, can get deeply emotional. Doesn't run off sheets or stats - the only rule of play is 'Defender decides the action'. I adore this LARP with all of my heart. It really gets to you. Both LARPs I have a family within and love them all ^_^ /rambling -- I am VERY glad it's friday now... I need this weekend to get stuff done and recover! And maybe get away from the insanity that's happening in my home country sigh]

If the students had seen anything, there was no sign of it in their looks, mostly just a great deal of curiosity about the new comer and what their teacher was doing with him. They knew what Professor Xavier could do and some had seen it, so thankfully whatever rumors spread would most likely be more innocent than the truth. Sadly, or perhaps just amusingly, Charles chuckled and shook his head no. "Oh, they're very much incline to exactly that. However, I don't get the feeling that anything too bad will come of it." Which suggested that perhaps Charles had scanned the minds of his students, but in reality he was just taking a healthy guess from what he knew of his students.

"However, your little show later will hopefully settle any issues that might arise and bring together a whole new series. They're going to be fascinated by someone who has powers like yours but isn't one of us. Perhaps it'll be good to open up their worlds a little further, as you've been doing to mine." He looked up to Aurus, giving that warm smile of his, leading the other towards where Hank's lab was safely at one end of the mansion, safe if any sort of explosions should happen. Or, you know, turn the entire room red. He would never live it down. It didn't help that there was a photo of his crimson self and his class all together.

He wasn't quite ready to discuss what he had felt back in the sitting room where Aurus had been introduced to the wonder of broadcast television. Those feelings, what he saw, what he felt in his heart and under his fingers... his hand rolled on the arm of his chair, briefly feeling the tingle across his skin again. It sent a shiver along his spine, one that reminded him of why he had broken them apart.

He brought them to the entrance to the lab, then nodded towards it with an incline of his head. "Thankfully the no longer red lab. I imagine Hank's getting everything set up for your bit of scientific fun, so enjoy yourself. I'll see you after for your... introduction to the children, shall we say?"

[That all sounds very fun, the latter group in particular! I can totally imagine the emotional potential. I was in Potter fandom years ago and had a group of friends who would get together for annual retreats each year and we'd have temporary RP spurts with everyone in costume (but all playing fandom characters). Nowadays it's just my partner and I, but this is the a huge part of how the relationships between our cast of GW2 characters have been built. Do you have a good option for getting out of the states for the weekend? (Wouldn't it be lovely to go lie on a beach somewhere for 48 hrs. /dreams)]

"I shall endeavor to to arouse no suspicions, I promise." But really, if Charles felt confident that the students were fine, then Aurus would take his word on it. It wasn't his chief concern anyway--he was far too distracted by the man beside him, the feeling that every glance they shared and every smile held a hint of additional meaning. And there was, admittedly, also a part of him that thrilled at the idea of how shocked some people here just might be if they knew the truth behind the two of them moving through the hallway together.

These notions, for the moment, could be pure levity and playfulness, and there need not be any talk about the meanings behind them. They could just feel buoyant and lighthearted, and as far as Aurus was concerned that was something to be valued in itself. Given how Charles had recoiled from the initial broaching of the topic, it was an absolute win.

Pausing outside of Hank's lab, Aurus scanned the hall around them for a moment to assure that they were alone. Perhaps it was always a bit more quiet at this end of the house, or perhaps the students were already making their way to their next classes. Regardless, things here were quiet, and there were no prying eyes to worry over.

"Then I go off to my next adventure," Aurus said with mock formality and a roguish smile. "Find me out in your garden later. I'll be the one in the center of the crowd with the glowing stone tablet. You'll want to see that." And he knew that Charles would because he'd not explained a thing about his plan and the promise of a glowing stone tablet would be an inevitable curiosity.

Presently, he reached out a hand and brushed his fingers along Charles' shoulder, then down his chest beside the aster still placed in his lapel, lingering just a moment, fingertips pressed lightly over the man's heart as he held his gaze.

He only paused for a beat, then turned and gave a knock on Hank's lab door to announce himself before stepping in.

"I hope you've got something good to show me, Hank. I've learned of satellites and been shown television. You've got some competition."

[If you could get over to Poland, you could play with that group there... we actually have a LOT of out-of-country-ers come for Magischola. A bunch of people from the UK, Denmark... and all over the US. I need to get a lot done around the house this weekend but oooooo lying on the beach sounds so lovely right now.]

It left Charles sitting there with a stunned expression - eyes wide, lips slightly parted. It wasn't an expression he very often wore yet somehow Aurus was managing to get it out of him again and again today. He watched the door shut and slowly sunk back into his chair, eyes closing slowly until he could rub a hand over his face. His fingers trickled down to where Aurus' fingers had rested over his heart which was currently beating quickly, almost a flutter. It felt like being a teenager again around the pretty girls. Having someone bring that feeling out in him felt all too rare. Moira had done it, with that sharp wit and intelligence and the look in her eyes, and Erik... damn him.

His fingers briefly fisted in the clothing over his chest before he released it. For right now, he had to go deal with paper work for the school, and... think. There was a great deal he needed to think about but more, he had to come to a decision. It was obvious that tonight was going to need a decision from him. Either he could let it go or he could keep protecting himself as he had been. His hand came down, pushing back the cuff on his sleeve to reveal the track marks that had been left behind by the drugs he had taken to keep the use of his legs and surpress the mental powers that had brought such pain to his life. He felt the thin, raised lines under his fingertips and let out a breath, then sent the wheelchair back in the other direction.

Hank, however, had to laugh in surprise at Aurus' choice of words. "Is that so? Well, come over here and we'll let you actually make some science instead of just seeing it." The chemicals needed were laying out along with a pair of goggles for the sylvari. "It'll be much more fun to actually be a part of it. I haven't done this in a long time... fun for me, too."

[Poland is one of the places in Europe I've never been, but I can imagine folks popping over for weekend visits for RP--we had a lot of friends from Denmark who used to spontaneously come to the UK for the weekend. Who knows, perhaps someday...when life is all less manic. Alas, no beach in either of our near futures, but perhaps some nice chill relaxing alongside getting life things done over the weekend.]

Truly shifting his focus to Hank and the experience at hand was, when it came right down to it, no small feat, even with all of Aurus' long practice of ordering his mind. He was still genuinely interested in what Hank was going to show him, and that made it easier, even as thoughts of Charles lingered.

He was half wondering about whether Hank would be able to read the new developments and subtle shifts of emotion on him straight away...or perhaps not quite yet but straight away when he saw him and Charles together next...or perhaps not at all. Perhaps everyone wonders if they have a "tell," but he had to actively stifle this train of though so that it wouldn't distract him as he stepped over to look at what Hank had arranged.

It was fair to say that he didn't have the first clue what he was seeing, so mystified curiosity helped him focus too. "What is all of this?" he asked as he looked over the spread which appeared completely un-volcano like to him. Just a bunch of bottles and jars and things (and also, what were those goggles for?)

He gave Hank a lightly teasing smile, "Are you going to try and teach me what all the fuss about science is? In my world people would call you daft for trying to make a sylvari appreciate such things."

[That's the trick of it, isn't it? When life is less hectic. Doesn't happen nearly often enough, though!]

If Hank guessed anything, he didn't show it, but there was a brief lingering glance towards the door that held a great deal of weight. In the back of his mind, he made a note to talk to Charles when they were done here. Something was going on, but he wasn't quite sure what it was. Sometimes Charles kept things from him, but often... he knew, even if he been an enabler before. He tended to want to please.

"Well all of this," gesturing over the table, "are what we're going to make our little psuedo-volcano with." He patted each ingredient as he spoke. "Baking soda, sand, water, vinegar, red food coloring, and for a bit of fun... sparklers. They're a type of firework. Now mind you, we're building a little version of the monster sized one Charles allowed his class to build and on top of that, let's just say children with powers they can't quite control can sometimes be well, enthusiastic."

But it wouldn't be long until they had a set up volcano made out of the sand he dumped onto the lab table they were working on. He offered over the pack of matches as the sparkler was stuck into the top, looking pleased. "Want to do the honors? Goggles on first, though." Popping his own on. Safety mattered, even if they were both adults.

[For srs. /wistful sigh I've been so bad this weekend though. Properly shut my brain off and vegged which is no good considering how much work I should have gotten done.]

Aurus certainly noticed the way Hank looked towards the door when and he would have quite liked to know what he was thinking in that moment. Ironically though, that wish just made him think of Charles again: Charles was a man who could answer that question for himself whenever he wanted, whenever curiosity struck. But as Aurus now knew, he didn't simply do it whenever curiosity struck.

How had he come to exercise that level of restraint, of self control? How many times in his life had he sated his curiosity only to discover, perhaps, that the answers were something other than what he wished to hear? How did he grow to understand that the promise of small immediate knowledge was less of a pure pleasure than it must at first seem? Did he learn it as a child? For that matter, had his powers been with him his whole life?

All these were things that the two of them had not spoken of yet, and Aurus made a mental note that later, when the time was right, he would ask. For now though, there was the volcano to be building.

What was appealing about this, as far as Aurus was concerned, was not so much the science of it, but the company: Hank was an enjoyable young man to be around, his soft social awkwardness a fascinating counterpoint to his confidence in the lab. So even if the sylvari wasn't interested in learning the science of what they were doing qua the science, he was still a good attentive student who asked questions and paid attention.

He was slightly incredulous about the idea that they were going to light any type of firework indoors. Tyria did certainly have fireworks, but they were almost invariably the sort that shot up into the air and exploded in dazzling colors. He put on the goggles though (strange things that they were--not made of glass and leather or, indeed, any substance that he was familiar with) and took the proffered matches.

"Very well. This being your lab and your demonstration, I can safely say that I bear no responsibility for whatever happens next." It was all teasing though, because of course Hank would know exactly what was going to happen, and Aurus wasn't genuinely worried about any of it.

He struck the match, lit the sparkler fuse, and took a step back from the table, watching as it burned down, and more than half expecting the loud bang of an explosion--albeit a contained one--when it did.

"I'm not Charles," Hank joked, a smile coming up to his lips. "I promise no explosions, no being covered in baking soda soaked in red food dye." Which explained the crimson nightmare of a photo that Charles still got a chuckle over. He stepped back as well, eyes bright as he watched the fun.

And it was. The sparkler lit up and happily shot golden sparkles up along with fire, while baking soda-dish soap lava spurt out along with it and down the sides of the sand volcano. A little messy, a lot of fun, and the fascinating (to him) reaction to make carbon dioxide. He gave a little chuckle at the whole thing, after all this was meant for very young children, before he peered over towards their alien visitor. The golden light really set off against that strange blue skin, making him seem even more other worldly than he was. This whole thing, in many ways, was one strange moment after another but Charles clearly seemed keen on Aurus.

Inside, Hank was... worried. Charles didn't open himself up to many and he didn't assume Charles had to Aurus, but there was something in that little moment that hinted to him something was going on. Charles wouldn't allow Aurus to remain here if the other was a danger, but just what it was Hank couldn't put a finger on. Some part of him wanted to make things were okay - for Charles' sake as much as the school.

"What do you think?" He asked, the smile still remaining despite his own concerned thoughts.

Aurus shared Hank's chuckle at the display--it was fun, though perhaps the fascination of it was lost on him somewhat.

"I think," he answered, giving Hank a knowing sort of look, "that if this is a display done for children and at a school, it must have some purpose other than simply to amaze and entertain. You're trying to teach them some idea with it, and I have to assume that idea is not that they ought to make eruptions of red foamy bubbles and gunpowder sparks at every free opportunity."

He considered the differences between this world and his own for a moment, thinking on how he might answer his own implicit question. "I've spent very little time around asura. I don't trust them. No Secondborn with any sense does. But I do know that they are fond of putting on displays to inspire the inventive spirit of their youth--their 'progeny,' as they say.

"Is that your intention here as well? Or is there something else you hope for your students to understand?"

It was a simple question at its surface, but there was quite a lot behind it. Aurus had spoken relatively little with Hank about his people or their history thus far, for one thing, and while Charles would now know what a Secondborn was, Hank would not. Neither of the men, however, yet knew the specifics of what the asura had done to Aurus's brothers and sisters in their youth.

Aurus might not be able to read that Hank was worried for Charles, but he didn't need to in order to realize that there was much that he and Hank should probably discuss with each other, and to take a subtle opening where he saw one.

[*HAS TO REMEMBER HOW THE VOLCANO WORKS*]

For Hank's side of things, there were several things in those questions that he most certainly did not understand. 'Asura', 'secondborn', but also the tone in which it was asked. The smile fell from his face, brows coming together, before he decided to, cautiously, answer the questions as much in the way they came. "The point of this demonstration is, yes, to inspire the students and get them more interested in science. From here, the goal is to explain the reason why the lava happened - that the combination of baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, or NaHCO3, mixing with the vinegar, HCH3COO, produces CO2 as a byproduct of the acid-base reaction and the gas creates the foam." Rambled off easily, not too worried on the details. "In other words... get them interested in the why behind things through their own natural curiosity."

He flashed a quick smile, because really it was something he had far too much of and loved indulging the students in it, but he did peer just as curiously at Aurus. "Where or who is this 'asura'? Is that what your species is called, then, Secondborn?" Hadn't the other mentioned a different name before?
