More than just a job

MORE THAN JUST A JOB

It's only business, nothing personal...at least, that's how it started. You were pegged as the right one for a job that involves this person; your task could be positive, such as protecting them with their consent or without it, guiding them from point a to point b, and the like - or, as seedier transactions tend to go, it could be negative. You have to take them back to a place they really don't want to return to, you have to be a jailor, or you even have to be their assassin. At the very least, helping or hurting, you'll be compensated generously (by money or, you know, by not being killed off). And that was all that mattered.

Until they mattered.

They could have shown you something you never knew existed in the world or in yourself. They could have done any number of things, yet they've won you and your feelings over. Your priorities just may shift because of this, but will their view of you do the same as soon as they learn why you were around them in the first place? For your own gain? Will they be able to forgive you?

Even if they can, will they be able to see you the way you see them?

[That prompts him to glance back at Cain, still beet red, but he doesn't reply. He just stretches out on the mattress on his stomach, and then rolls over to his side, with his back facing him.

[If only so that Cain can't see the giddy and nervous smile curling his lips. "He thinks I'm cute!!!" he thinks. It feels really fucking good to not have the undercurrent of a jab against him in the same breath.

[Though napping like this is... not the most comfortable. Ren prefers to sleep in just his boxers, and that's... problematic right now. Because he's too warm for blankets, anyway.

[He wriggles a bit to get comfortable, and, even if he doesn't actually fall asleep, drifting in a dimly awake state isn't bad, either.]

[ good enough to kill an hour or so; Cain won't be able to doze longer than that, pushing himself up and rubbing his palm against his face as he does.

the sun's breaking across the horizon in orange and yellow, setting yet not quite set, so there's still time to kill. he does a quick survey of the room—he can't come back here after this, so he's gonna have to shove as much as possible into the truck. there's bedding boxed up in some of the boxes against the wall...

he stands, stretching again, pulling his elbow over his head and loosening himself up for what he figures'll probably be a long night of driving. ]

[At first, when he hears quiet sounds, Ren doesn't remember where he is as he wakes up. Even so, he manages to keep himself still, waiting a moment until it comes back to him. It does, before long, and the tension in his body ebbs.

[He yawns, flexing his fingers a bit as they'd gotten slightly cramped from trying to cuddle the mattress in his sleep. Flopping over onto his back as he wills his mind to snap into full alertness, he idly looks over at the source of the sounds he heard: Cain.

[He catches himself staring just a bit, and he closes his eyes in order to rub them as he sits up, and swings his legs over the edge.]

Nnn. I dunno if that mattress helped or hindered my sleep.

[Ren yawns again, and grimaces, and looks back up at him - this time, not staring at his muscles.]

Or maybe it's just the unfamiliar area.

You rest okay?

Okay enough.

[ he probably could have used more, but he doesn't even feel it — just the adrenaline of avoiding any members of the gang, the boss' eyes, knowing he'd fucked up their carefully constructed plan and didn't even attempt to fix it. not to mention his unexpected tag-a-long; not that he's unhappy for the company. he doesn't particularly like being alone unless he's training. ]

You can sleep in the truck, if you want.

[ still unfamiliar, but more time, at least.

he gestures towards the boxes stacked against the wall, ] Grab whatever you think you might wanna use so we can pack it up. [ the blankets he thought of earlier, pillows, things like sweaters and other things one could grab from donation bins and passed out as loot from the boss. ]

I might, if my stamina wears out. I'm, uh... [Ren's tone softens.] mostly banking on keeping you company for as long as I can.

[Looking to the boxes, Ren rummaged about in them in order to pull out a couple of decent-looking sweaters, some blankets, and four fluffy pillows. After sniffing them to make sure that they don't smell bad, he carefully starts refolding the blankets so that he can just use them to carry the pillows and sweaters inside.]

This should work, from what I could find.

[For the moment, he sets them down on the mattress. It's not like they're moving out just now, so there's still time, isn't there?]

which is why Cain throws himself back onto the mattress, arms splayed wide, though he manages to avoid messing up the pile Ren had just placed down. it's rough; it's not time to leave but he's feeling restless, ready to do something. he knows it's not time, but it doesn't make it any easier. he likes to do. have distractions. ]

Yeah? [ he grins up at Ren, ignoring the pile of selected items. ] That's sweet of you—keeping me company.

[To that, Ren gives Cain a faint smile, and then picks up the pile to move it a bit further away.]

Well, it's because of this situation that I can get away from mine.

One good turn deserves another, and all that.

[To be honest, seeing Cain laying out like this, he can't help but let his gaze wander appreciatively, even though he's aware of the other man's eyes on him.]

[ he doesn't seem to mind being looked at, at any rate. just looks back and grins like he likes it. which he does. ]

Feel like it's better called somethin' like... dumb luck. [ because 'a good turn' makes it feel like he'd actually intended to do something good—he can't pretend that much. ] But I'll still take it.

[ stretching out, he rolls, flopping his arms over his head. ]

Shit, waiting's boring! And I can't sleep anymore.

[Ren still watches him, snickering gently in response to his comment about waiting. Daringly, he skirts his (mostly soft, slightly rough) fingertips along the inside of one of Cain's forearms.]

Not sure what I could offer for entertainment. I don't fuck on the first date---

[Realizing the word he just said: "date" - his face burns hot.]

N-not that this is a date! God, that would be a pretty crummy -- I-I meant it as a figure of speech.

[Abruptly, Ren retracts his touch and pulls his hands back onto his lap. What is he, desperate?!

[But Cain is seriously, seriously hot. Why is his ex-kidnapper hot?!]

[ he blinks and then laughs, a ringing sound that echoes throughout the room. that's what he gets embarrassed by?? not even the 'fucking' part, the 'date' part?

Cain props himself up on his elbows and leans toward Ren, giving a small shrug of his shoulder. ]

[ he knows what Ren meant, but he's just asking to be teased—and he's really cute when he's flustered. much better this way. ]

[Fuck Cain stop oozing sex appeal. Ren's face feels like it might burn off! He huffs out another breath - cussing spell averted - and tilts his head just the slightest bit, leaning towards him.]

You seriously wanna roll with it like that? That's a liiiiiittle weird, man. But, I'll bite. What would you do on an actual date?

[Admittedly, Ren likes a full belly and company that isn't a piece of shit. But that's just his minimum standard.]

[ when he woke up today, this was not how he expected his day to go. and while he usually ends up saying that... welp. this really is a new one.

and that's a bad question, Ren, because his immediate no-thinking-about-it answer is: ]

.... But in this case—I want a fucking burger. Haven't eaten anything since this morning.

[ and as if to add to that, his stomach growls, and he flops back on the mattress again ] Or anything!!! Shit, I don't even care.

[The main problem is that he's not so keen on flashing his bits because they just met.]

[To that, Ren lets instinct take over, and that means, well, unabashedly rubbing Cain's stomach. It doesn't linger, though.]

Well, I can see why you'd wanna f-fuck in order to ignore your stomach.

[His cheeks flush a bit, as an idea hits him.]

[So long as it's just him giving it, seems fine to him. And while he's still blushing terribly, there's no denying the calm in his body language. Honestly? It's partly because that question doesn't have any curse words in it. The other part is, well, he's had some experience doing that.]

I'd cook, but this place doesn't exactly have a kitchen.

[ he cocks a brow, repositioning himself yet again (he's really fucking restless) so that he's propped up on an elbow, resting his temple into his palm. this is probably the most comfortable position yet, and this way, he can look up at Ren from under his bangs. ]

[ another tease. he doesn't turn down blow jobs, sure, but that isn't exactly the way a date is supposed to start, yeah? that's usually mid-date. or end. ]

[ cliche, maybe. but he knows literally nothing other than his name—and he's curious. what kind of person did he end up grabbing instead of the snotty brat he was supposed to get. ]

[Admittedly, he doesn't have much dating experience either, compared to sexual things. So he's taken aback by the admittedly tame questions.]

Well, I really like purple, and sky blue.

[He fidgets slightly, fingers toying with the hem of his shirt.]

And foods depend on if you're talking moderately healthy eating, or sweets. If it's the former, then I'll pretty much eat anything with beef in it. Fish is a close second. For sweets... that's anything minty.

But, uh, I grew up in a really... really traditional home, and home-schooled, so I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I have no idea who that group is.

Not that I haven't tried to figure things out like that. You could, uh, say it's a fair statement to say that I was a prisoner in my own home all my life. They didn't like - my folks, that is - anything that "corrupted the mind." [Cue airquotes. He grins sheepishly.] That included modern music, and the radio.

I just started getting good at sneaking out at night. And if I was good enough during the day to stay on their good sides, I could spend a few hours outside. Which is how you found me.

[Despite what he's talking about, his gaze is decidedly gentle, and he doesn't seem angry about what he just said. Honestly, he's still relieved to be leaving, is all. ]

[ he watches Ren as he talks, gaze flicking down to fingers pulling at the hem of his shirt when he notices the fabric shifting before looking back up at his face. there's something to be said about someone who wouldn't get pissed when talking about that; Cain knows he would—but he's probably just an angrier person, he figures. considering punching people is one of his first responses to most things... welp. ]

I can see why you'd wanna ditch that.

[ as much as his own life has been shit, at least he hasn't been confined. controlled? sure. but he'd always had the streets and booze to keep him company. ]

Don't worry about the Backstreet Boys. They sucked.

[ and Cain actually smiles—not a total shit-eating grin, but actually something sort of... soft. don't call him out on it. he'll grump and make noise. ]

Let's see... blue. This color. [ he pinches the strand of blue dyed into his hair: electric blue. ] And food... [ he almost groans. he's so hungry. ] proooobably... shit. Dunno. Blini! That's good.

[ and lastly, ] And rock music is my favorite. Guns N Roses! Ever heard of them?

[No pointing it out here - Ren's yet to establish a full "baseline" as to what to expect from Cain, so he doesn't dare try to push anything yet.]

That's.. a really nice color, too. Never heard of blini, but I did overhear some people talking about Guns N Roses before. Unfortunately, I was only passing by, so I didn't really gather much from the conversation.

But from what little I did manage to hear through browsing in a music shop, it has a very nice sound to it, and the vocals are enjoyable to me, from what little I've heard. If you have any of their music, I think it's something I'd like.

If you could keep any kind of pet in the world, what would it be?

[ he doesn't even need to think about that one. ]

[ flashing some teeth, he thinks for a second (what's another question you'd ask on a date) before asking, ]

If you could go anywhere, where would you want to go?

[That honestly gets Ren to smile rather brightly.]

I'd love to go somewhere like... Germany, I think. I mean, I don't know a lick of German, but I think the language sounds nice. I mean, I've only seen how it looks in books. Outdated ones, too. But I liked what I saw.

[He taps his bottom lip, briefly, as he comes up with another question.]

What's your favorite time of day?

Heh. Germany, huh? Not a bad pick. Never been, but it doesn't sound too different from Russia.

[ pausing, he thinks on the question. ] Night. I don't like it when it's crowded out [ he shrugs again, chewing on his lip. ] Some time around like... 3... maybe 4 in the morning. When most people are asleep.

[ like the boss. but he's not gonna think on that. ]

Favorite animal?

I don't much care for crowds, either. I think the longest I've been awake for was until 2am.

[All the while, he's thinking about the question.]

Foxes. Especially the types with the giant ears.

[He gestures then, using his hands to illustrate just how giant those ears might be.]

The fennec fox in particular. It's just so cute!

[Flushing slightly in embarrassment, he gives a bit of a shrug.]

Bears are a close second.

Hmm... If you could have any super power in the world, but could only pick one, what would it be and why?

You look a little like a fox, I think. [ he laughs again, grinning enough that a small dimple creases at the bottom corner of his left eye. ] Small face and big eyes. [ all he's missing are the big ears! ]

... Super power? [ that's something he's never really thought about—he ain't no nerd. but he considers... well. could be anything, right? ]

Good luck. Don't wanna control it, just wanna see what happens. Keep things interesting, you know?

[ plus it'd mage gambling like, a hundred times better. ]

What's your biggest dream?

[That compliment just makes Ren's eyes widen even further as he blushes. He almost giggles. Almost.]

Ah, it's kinda embarrassing.

[Ren fidgets again, thumbs lightly tapping together.]

Honestly? It was just to leave my parents' house and never look back. That's the biggest dream I've had for several years now. After I realized that I didn't want the dream that my parents had for me, which was to stay there and raise children for the rest of my life.

So I don't know what comes after that. I have a lot of growing to do, and since my experiences are limited, I don't... want to somehow get trapped into something else. God forbid that it's worse than before.

...But if I think of one, I'll tell you.

[His body language relaxes.]

...Good fortune sounds like an amazing super power. I never thought of it.

[He's not sure what to ask next.]

It's cheating, probably, but everything else sounds like too much work.

[ that's all right—they can leave soon, he thinks, considering they've killed some time. though he will wrinkle his nose at the idea of raising children and doing nothing but. yikes.

he pushes himself up into a sitting position, hair tumbling with his movements. ]

Then I'm glad to make your dream come true. Even if it started with kidnapping. [ and screwing himself over. but hey, at least some good came out of it, somehow. ] You've got time to figure out what you want. Just do what feels right.

[ and he pushes himself up off the bed, stretching again. ]

[To that, Ren flashes a wry smile, still embarrassed, but grateful all the same.]

I'm just sorry that my good fortune ended so badly for you.

I just-- hope my folks don't make a big deal of me being gone. I'm not sure how to circumvent that. I mean... I don't know a whole bunch about technology but I did overhear that some phones can be... traced?

[He makes a face, uncertain. The last thing he wants is for a reason for the police to be involved out of their favor.]

It would be fine if I just called them on a payphone to let them know that I'm not coming back?

Or would that be too risky to you?

I don't want them to, well, get the police involved and make it harder to move around.
