More than just a job
![]() It's only business, nothing personal...at least, that's how it started. You were pegged as the right one for a job that involves this person; your task could be positive, such as protecting them with their consent or without it, guiding them from point a to point b, and the like - or, as seedier transactions tend to go, it could be negative. You have to take them back to a place they really don't want to return to, you have to be a jailor, or you even have to be their assassin. At the very least, helping or hurting, you'll be compensated generously (by money or, you know, by not being killed off). And that was all that mattered. Until they mattered. They could have shown you something you never knew existed in the world or in yourself. They could have done any number of things, yet they've won you and your feelings over. Your priorities just may shift because of this, but will their view of you do the same as soon as they learn why you were around them in the first place? For your own gain? Will they be able to forgive you? Even if they can, will they be able to see you the way you see them?

Hey.
[ so walking up to someone in the middle of broad daylight, on the sidewalk, is a good idea, right? ]
Mind helping me with something?
[ don't mind the black leather, black hair, or blue streak in his hair, Ren. he's obviously an upstanding citizen that abides by the law always. ]
no subject
[As it was, being asked such a question had his curiosity growing further still.]
Me? Certainly, that is, if it's something that I can do! What d'ya need?
[Of course, the looks did make Cain stand out a bit, reminding Ren of some of the local delinquents. Most of 'em were still upstanding guys, though (and some of them helped him gather the type of clothing he was wearing now!) Even so, he really, really looked like an honest person to him. There was something about him that he hadn't been able to pin down, but... it honestly didn't matter, right? Even so, he let Cain approach him rather than seeking to meet him halfway. He had some sense of... propriety? Caution?]
no subject
Try not to make too much noise, wouldya?
[ well, there's honesty right there -- he hadn't thought about this too much to have come up with some amazing plan... and frankly, that seemed like too much work, anyway. he merely grabs Ren and hoists him over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes. ]
That'll make this a lot easier. [ at least no one's really around?? and with that he starts striding over to his truck, which is parked right around the corner. ]
Sorry for the wait! Internet went out thanks to yesterday's blizzard.
[Ren's small stature and slender build makes him light, too. His hands immediately grasp onto Cain's jacket for further stability.]
Oh my god?!!
[But... he wasn't making much noise. He wasn't really shouting, or screaming, or anything like that, and he wasn't flailing, either (he could fall if he did!) It... wasn't exactly like he was dumb, either, but he just found himself dumbstruck by everything going on.
[With no other explanation forthcoming, it quickly hit him like a water balloon to the face.]
W-wait, can't we talk this out first?!
[But he still wasn't raising his voice - despite his audible panic.]
no worries!
[ like... he's not going to not do it. c'mon now! hey, at least he's actually doing that favor. ]
Don't worry, I'm not gonna sell you into slavery or nothin, if that's what you're worried about. [ THANKS CAIN FOR GIVING HIM THE THOUGHT even if it's true that that's.... probably not going to happen?
when he reaches the truck he tosses Ren inside the back, locking the door and banging on it with his hand, ]
Better get comfortable, yeah? [ swinging himself into the driver's seat, ] We've got a long drive.
no subject
[Welp, now he's in the truck. He scowls and tries to open the door again. No dice. Fuck. He tries the other door. Nope. Maybe... he'll just wait for his abductor to get driving and bash through the window?? And jump out? ...Ugh, today is just not his day.]
I'm more worried about the fact that you're taking me to begin with!
[He almost moves to see if he can buckle up and then... doesn't. Nope. Even though it's such a habit, he has to deliberately ignore it.]
no subject
[ he pulls out of his parking spot, easing out into traffic, clearly not too perturbed about the fact that he just kidnapped someone. ]
You can call me Cain.
[ easing a cigarette out of his pocket, he tucks it into his mouth, glancing up at the rearview mirror to look at Ren ]
You might wanna get used to me.
no subject
[Pouting, Ren crossed his arms across his chest. Adventure his ass. He waits for Cain to get particularly focused on the traffic, and Ren himself focuses on the flow of it, waiting for a lull in which he could have some modicum of safety if he was planning on jumping out the truck's window.
[Because that's what he's hoping to do. God, that was gonna suck, hitting the pavement at any kind of speed....]
no subject
[ it's a shame that he's driving way too fast then -- not because he's expecting the kid to leap out of the car, but merely because he's reckless -- weaving in and out of traffic, speeding right through yellow lights before they turn red, not stopping at stop signs. yet somehow he's not pulled over by the cops! amazing. ]
Just relax. [ like anyone can do that when they're being kidnapped... ] S'not that bad.

Penny Polendina | RWBY

Watching her die on national television. Waiting weeks, months, as she had been rebuilt.
And how had they repaid Ciel? Ironwood had said she didn't have to look after Penny anymore. Like the girl had been some sort of burden. He probably meant it as a favor, but...
When the dust had settled, Ciel returned to the room she and Penny shared, flopping into a chair near the door and looking up at the ceiling, spent. Not a usual look for her, to be sure. Investigate?]
no subject
But sooner or later she did wander back to her room. And there she saw her looking very out-of-sorts. ]
Ciel? Are you all right? [ She stepped carefully into the room. ]
no subject
[She says it with surprise, almost jumping as the girl enters. Then she swallows, and tries to regain her composure. Old habits, right?]
I'm... alright.
no subject
May I sit with you? { Gesturing to her old bed, the bottom bunk. ]
no subject
I'd like that a lot, actually. It's been an... interesting hour or two. [For once, she's not quite sure.]

[She sighs, looking pointedly at the ceiling.]
I learned that when I'm angry enough I do things like challenge General Ironwood to a duel.
no subject
[ Her eyes go wide and she covers her mouth in shock. ] General Ironwood? Ciel, why would you do something like that?
no subject
[She sighs.]
He tried to give me new orders.
